• Why do Google search results include pages disallowed in robots.txt?

  I have some pages on my site that I want to keep search engines away from, so I disallowed them in my robots.txt file like this: User-Agent: * Disallow: /email Yet I recently noticed that Google still sometimes returns links to those pages in their search results. Why does this happen, and how can I stop it? Background: Several years ago, I made a simple web site for a club a relative of mine was involved in. They wanted to have e-mail links on their pages, so, to try and keep those e-mail addresses from ending up on too many spam lists, instead of using direct mailto: links I made those links point to a simple redirector / address harvester trap script running on my own site. This script would return either a 301 redirect to the actual mailto: URL, or, if it detected a suspicious access pattern, a page containing lots of random fake e-mail addresses and links to more such pages. To keep legitimate search bots away from the trap, I set up the robots.txt rule shown above, disallowing the entire space of both legit redirector links and trap pages. Just recently, however, one of the people in the club searched Google for their own name and was quite surprised when one of the results on the first page was a link to the redirector script, with a title consisting of their e-mail address followed by my name. Of course, they immediately e-mailed me and wanted to know how to get their address out of Google's index. I was quite surprised too, since I had no idea that Google would index such URLs at all, seemingly in violation of my robots.txt rule. I did manage to submit a removal request to Google, and it seems to have worked, but I'd like to know why and how Google is circumventing my robots.txt like that and how to make sure that none of the disallowed pages will show up in their search results. Ps. I actually found out a possible explanation and solution, which I'll post below, while preparing this question, but I thought I'd ask it anyway in case someone else might have the same problem. Please do feel free to post your own answers. I'd also be interested in knowing if other search engines do this too, and whether the same solutions work for them also.

• How to report abuse to website hosting company (GoDaddy)

  I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask such a question... Let's say that a website posted a picture of me, without my consent, and I want to be removed (it's something private, could compromise my career if it's seen by someone that shouldn't). I sent them an email asking nicely that they should remove it, but they didn't respond and the picture is still there. Using 'Whois' I found that the website is hosted by GoDaddy. Is there a way (an email address, for ex.) to report to GoDaddy that one of the sites they're hosting does something illegal and to force them to remove the photo? I searched the site and found nothing about such a thing. Thnaks in advance!

• How to specify multiple HostName/Port combinations in .ssh/config

  I have multiple notebooks and workstations which pull and push from multiple Mercurial repositories on a central server. I usually use .ssh/config to set an alias: Host repo-server HostName server.somedomain User user143 IdentityOnly yes IdentityFile ~/hgkey Port 156 ... and some more options, you get the idea. I can then simply do a hg push ssh://repo-server//hgroot/someproject on every local repository, and I can change the server address and port in one place. For workstations, this works fine, but the notebooks can access the server either from inside the network or from outside, using a different address and a different port. Is there any way I can specify multiple HostName/Port combinations so that SSH automatically tries them in order? This way, the users could push and pull without having to care about the correct address. (of course, using a VPN would be the most correct solution)

• Apache mod_remoteip and access logs

  Since Apache 2.4 I've started using mod_remoteip instead of mod_extract_forwarded for rewriting client address from x-forwarded-for provided by frontend servers (varnish, squid, apache etc). So far everything works fine with the modules, i.e. php, cgi, wsgi etc... - client addresses are shown as they should be, but I couldn't write client address in access logs (%a, %h, %{c}a). No luck - I'm always getting 127.0.0.1 (localhost forward ex.). How to log client's ip address when using mod_remoteip?

• Does my DLink DNS-323 need to reside on a "192.168.0.0/24" subnet?

  I've installed two brand new 2-tib drives in the DLink and plugged it in to my network. I set my router's static address table to include the MAC address of the device; however it doesn't ever "show up." Do I need to use the custom software to administer this device? Do I need to use a "192.168.0.0/24" network in order for this device to work (asking because it states that if DHCP isn't detected, it will default to an address in that range; and my network is not in that range).

  If I have a 32 bit version of SQL Server 2005 running on a 64 bit Windows Server does the max amount of memory avail. the SQL Server process increase from 2gb to 4gb. In reading this blog entry by Mark Russinovich in which he states that "All Microsoft server products and data intensive executables in Windows are marked with the large address space awareness flag" and "Because the address space on 64-bit Windows is much larger than 4GB, something I’ll describe shortly, Windows can give 32-bit processes the maximum 4GB that they can address and use the rest for the operating system’s virtual memory." which leads me to believe that the answer is "yes" but I not totally confident.

  I need to setup a cronjob on my webhost. The documentation for my webapp reads as follows: you will need to create following cronjob: /public_html/cake/console/cake -app /public_html/app master Also, I want any output written to a log file. My hosts documentation says this: You can have cron send an email everytime it runs a command. If you do not want an email to be sent for an individual cron job you can redirect the command's output to /dev/null like this: mycommand /dev/null 2&1 Can someone help me write the cron job? I dont know the syntax at all. Thanks for the help!

• How to add SMS text messaging functionality to my website?

  I want to add the ability to send reminders to people via email and SMS for specific events that they have signed up for on a web application that I am building. The email part is not difficult, but I am wondering where to find a good solution for sending SMS messages. It would also be a plus if this solution allowed two-way SMS communication with my web application so that people would be able to reply with a CONFIRM or CANCEL type of a message. Has anyone implemented something like this? Does anyone know of good tools out there? EDIT: I am realizing that this is more of a "lots of ways to skin this cat" type of question and so I changed it to community wiki.

• Is there an open source solution that I can host on a web server that will allow users to anonymously upload a file to me?

  I'm looking for some kind of web application I can host on my Linux web server that will allow users to upload files of arbitrary size to me from their browser without requiring them to log in. Ideally this application would allow me to generate a link to my website that allowed for a one-time use upload. It might contain a unique, random key that was only good for that session. I could email them the link, they click it and are taken to a page where they can upload their file to me. I'm mainly targeting friends and family that need to send me files that are too large for email. I don't want to require them to install anything (dropbox), sign up and log in, etc. I'm definitely not teaching them to use FTP. This wouldn't be a difficult project for me to roll on my own but I'd like to take something off the shelf if it is possible. Does anything like this exist that my google-foo isn't turning up?

• Routing / binding 128 to one server

  I have a Ubuntu server with 128 ip's (static external ips 86.xx.xx.16), and I want to crawl pages thru different ip's. The gateway is xx.xxx.xxx.1, the main ip is xx.xxx.xxx.16, and the other 128 ip's are xx.xxx.xxx.129/255. I tried this configuration in /etc/network/interfaces but I doesn't work. It work if I remove the gateway for the aliases eth0:0 and eth0:1. I think this is routing problem. auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 auto eth0:0 auto eth0:1 iface eth0 inet static address xx.xxx.xxx.16 netmask 255.255.255.128 gateway xx.xxx.xxx.1 iface eth0:0 inet static address xx.xxx.xxx.129 netmask 255.255.255.128 gateway xx.xxx.xxx.1 iface eth0:1 inet static address xx.xxx.xxx.130 netmask 255.255.255.128 gateway xx.xxx.xxx.1 Also, please tell me how to "reset" every changes that I made in networking and routing.   I want to build a list from maillog, maillog.x containing something like Date, Sender's email, Recipient's Email and subject of the message filtering output emails and output domain. I've read about importing from spreadsheet program a cvs file. The issue is I have to add field separators in log file. I couldn't find how to customize that. How can I do that, the list and the separator?   I upgraded from Fedora 14 to 16, recently. I had two static IP v4 addresses configured on my ethernet interface by creating two files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts: ifcfg-eth0 -> first address ifcfg-eth0:1 -> second address After the upgrade, this resulted in an error message during the boot process and in only the second address being successfully configured on the interface. So, what is the correct way to configure multiple addresses on a single interface on Fedora 16? I could not find anything on this subject in the documentation so far.

• Set up Ubuntu in Virtualbox to have static ip

  I frequently work in different locations, and need to have a virtualbox version of Ubuntu server running locally. While I was at home getting it set up, I was able to ssh into the server using the locally allocated IP address. However, now that I'm elsewhere, ifconfig is still showing the old 10.0.x.x ip address, but instead of being in the 10.0.x.x space, my laptop's ip starts with 192.168.x.x With that in mind, if there a straightforward way to set up the virtual box Ubuntu server in such a way that I can just connect using "ssh servername" regardless of it's ip address?

• How to Export a Contact to and Import a Contact from a vCard (.vcf) File in Outlook 2013

  vCard is the abbreviation for Virtual Business Card and is the standard format (.vcf files) for electronic business cards. vCards allow you to create and share contact information over the internet, such as in email messages and instant messaging. You can also use vCards to move contact information from one email or personal information management program to another, as long as both programs support the .vcf file format. vCards can contain name and address information, as well as phone numbers, email addresses, URLs, images, and audio clips. We will show you how to export a contact to and import a contact from a vCard, or .vcf file, in Outlook. First access the People section by clicking People at the bottom of the Outlook window. To view your contact in business card format, click Business Card in the Current View section of the Home tab. Select a contact by clicking on the name bar at the top of the business card. To export the selected contact as a vCard, click the File tab. On the Account Information screen, click Save As in the list of options on the left. The Save As dialog box displays. By default, the name of the contact is used to name the .vcf file in the File name edit box. Change the name, if desired, select a location for the file, and click Save. The contact is saved as a .vcf file. To import a vCard, or .vcf file, into Outlook, simply double-click on the .vcf file. By default, .vcf files are automatically associated with Outlook, so the file is opened in Outlook as a Contact. Make any changes or additions to the contact in the contact editing window. To save the contact, click Save & Close in the Actions section of the Contact tab. NOTE: Notice that because this contact is new, the full contact editing window displays rather than the Contact Card that displays when double-clicking on a contact. You can open the full contact editing window instead of the Contact Card when editing a contact or searching for a contact. The contact is added to the Contacts folder. You can add your contact information to a signature in business card format, and it will display as shown above in emails. • Issue updating domain name servers from BlueHost to AWS

  I am trying to migrate my site hosting from bluehost to AWS cloud based service. I have the site up and running on AWS with an elastic IP configured, it loads fine when I specify the IP address in the browser. I have gone into Route 53 on the AWS console and created a "hosted zone" for the domain. I then created a new record set of type "A" using the IP address as the value. I have a domain name registered with bluehost. Ive logged into the bluehost account and updated the domain name servers to point to those specified in Route 53 in the AWS console. When I hit the IP address directly the site loads, however it doesn't load when using the domain name (I get a google chrome oops error page saying page is not found) I've tried using this site: http://dns.squish.net/ to debug but it seems to be giving me the correct results. fizaclegems.com 300 IN A 107.20.209.78 Where 107.20.209.78 matches the elastic IP configured in the AWS console. This is the result it gives for all 4 name servers. Am I missing a step here? Does anyone know what else I should be doing or looking for?

The airport extreme gets it's external IP address via PPPoE, and sometimes... once a week it changes. For security reasons WE ACTUALLY like this behavior. But i need a way to know the external IP address just in case i need to connect and do something to the server while on the outside. What can i do?

• RDC not working from outside

  I've set up Remote Connection according to : http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/allow-remote-desktop-connections-from-outside-your-home-network That is, Allow remote connections to the computer you want to access. Make sure Remote Desktop is able to communicate through your firewall. Find the IP address of the computer on your home network that you want to connect to. Open your router's configuration screen and forward TCP port 3389 to the destination computer's IP address. Find your router's public IP address so that Remote Desktop can find it on the Internet. When I'm inside the LAN, RDC works flawlessly. When I try to connect to the ip given by my ISP it cannot connect. I've setup port forwarding for 3389 on my netgear router. Thanks!
