• Pin the Dock to the top

  I wonder if it is possible to pin the Mac OS X Dock to the top in Snow Leopard? I see lets of ideas on how to do this when I google for it, and Secrets (the tweaking app) also provide it as an option, but I don't see any of the ways working for me. I guess it must have worked at some point, since people said it did, but I believe this feature might have been removed from Snow Leopard, and therefore does not work for me. Is this so? Is there really no way to pin the Dock to the top of screen? If not, what ways of "getting rid of the dock" can you guys recommend? I have tried with auto-hiding, but my problem is that this will leave a 4px line at the edge of where the Dock is pinned to, that applications wont cover. Thats not ideal for me. As far as I have understood from googling, this line will not appear if the Dock is pinned to the top, hence my question. What other ways do you guys use to get rid of it?

• Nginx configuration question

  Hey guys, i'm trying to make the autoindex feature only run for my ip address with this code: server{ ... autoindex off; ... if ($remote_addr ~ ..*.*) { autoindex on; } ... } But it doesn't work. • Netgear FVS336G: appropriate solution for today's small businesses?

  Hey all, I've been looking into a routers to facilitate a vpn solution for a small business. While the Netgear FVS336G looks good on paper, it appears to have some fairly crippling setbacks that drag down what appears to be some great hardware. First off, the unit has been around for a couple years now, perhaps before 64-bit operating systems were as common as they are now, and complaints are everywhere that claim that SSL or IPsec (or both) VPN connections will not work with 64-bit operating systems. However, most of these claims mention only Vista, which makes me think that these problems could have potentially been solved since then. Unfortunately though, Netgear's support forums seem to be incredibly private, and policed by some troll named jmizuguchi who just closes down public posts in order to marshal them into the private ones. Danger, will robinson. Apparently their firmware upgrade process is a nightmare too, but that's beside the point. My question is this: has anyone configured one a Netgear FVS336G to operate in a server 2008 (or R2)/windows 7 64-bit network? If so, is it possible to use the microsoft vpn client or are third party clients still required? If this thing has just failed the test of time, is there a feature-comparable unit that I've missed, at anywhere near the same price range? Thanks!

  Hello I'm trying to substitute citadel on my Virtual Private Server with something more simple. I dislike their documentation and the webmail client. I don't need any groupware feature. I need only an MTA with a nice looking web interface, SPAM and VIRUS check. I recently found the lamson project from Zed Shaw. Is that production ready? Do you had any real and good experience with It? On the latest-news page I see that the last release dates december 2009. Sorry for my lack of knowledge, I'm really new to mail servers but I have to find a solution to manage sending and receiving mail on my VPS. I would accept also to build my VPS email server using a linux system like exim, postfix or whatever but I have really small needs and they will not grow in at least a year and i will be the only one user. I'm searching for something that I could build and manage easily, as I'm a novice linux sysadmin. Having also some good documentation or at least a robust step by step guide would be a plus.

• How can I write directly to my Zune HD hard drive?

  When syncing photos to the Zune HD it resizes them down to a much lower resolution which means I cannot load a high res picture on it (comic book) and zoom in to read it. This defeats the whole purpose of having a zoom feature. There is a registry hack you can make to get the Zune to display under My Computer. Then if you killed the zune process while it's syncing you'd be able to access it like a hard drive and copy files to it. It seems like the more recent firmware and/or Zune software version now prevents this. How can I treat it like an HDD and copy files to it? I simply want to take my original pictures folder and copy it over the low resolution versions the Zune software resized it to. An alternative option would be to remove the hard drive from it and see if I can connect it to a computer directly, but I just got this and don't want to disassemble it yet. Note to Microsoft: Why do you allow me to set the encoding quality of music, but not photos?

• What is the difference between disabling hibernation and idling time for a NAS?

  I have two D-LINK DNS-323 NAS boxes with two Seagate drives in each. The first one is about a year old, the second one about three months. The first two on Monster are each 1.5T drives while the last two on Origami are 2T drives. I have never been overly happy with the Monster drives but, outside of poor throughput on small files, they have been consistently available to all programs after I put a batch file into my startup to do a directly listing of each. I added the two new drives when I added the Origami box. But, watching the dos box that comes up, I rarely see both listed before the box disappears. Other programs, backups, Belarc, even my file browsers, seem to have a dickens of a time seeing O: and P:. Finally, I decided to go into setup and turn off hibernation. Performance HAS been better since and Belarc, for instance, now sees both drives. At the time of poking around, I noticed an Idle Time feature too. What is the difference between the two settings? And for added points, how much trouble am I in for turning off hibernation? The super bonus round ... anything ELSE I should have done? Thanks in advance, GM

• All virtualhosts serving Apache default files

  I'm trying to configure Apache as an in-network webserver, and am using the sites-available/sites-enabled feature as opposed to just static vhost files. I set up a couple VirtualHosts, all with a unique DocumentRoot, however request for all the VirtualHosts just serve up the "It's Working!" default file. I can't for the life of me figure out why it won't serve the content out of the correct directory. • Is there a free PDF printer / distiller that creates signable documents?

  I've used various methods (mentioned elsewhere on this site) to create PDFs, using a printer driver or converting from PostScript, etc. The common problem is that if I open any of the output files in the newer versions of Adobe Reader, there's an option to "Place Signature" but it's greyed out, or gives an error message that the feature has been disabled for this document. As far as I can tell, there's an option set somewhere in the document metadata that tells Reader "allow the user to sign this document", or don't. None of the free/open source tools that have been been linked to in other SU posts have had this listed as an option (though to be fair I haven't actually downloaded and tried all of them). Is there a tool that does this? Can I just poke a bit with a hex editor somewhere to turn on this functionality? I can sometimes get access to Acrobat Professional to turn on this option, but doing it for every desired case would be more work than I care to do. The current workaround for single-page documents is: Print the document to PDF (possibly via postscript) Open a single-page blank PDF with the "signable" bit turned on in Reader create a custom "stamp" using the Reader markup tools, by importing the printed-to document "stamp" an image of the printed document on the blank page, hoping to get it centered about right place a signature over the document-but-not-really you just stamped This obviously does not scale well at all. It would be much better if I could: Print the document to PDF Drag the document to a simple shortcut / tool / whatever Open the document in Reader Place a signature in the document ETA: Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer -- I'm talking about the certificate-based digital signing available in Adobe Reader, not adding a virtual ink signature. Also, any solution really would have to be available offline.

  i'm trying to add asp.net feature on windows 7 i tried to turn it on using turn windows features on or off but it fails every time so i download web platform installer and try it that way and it fails also next i uninstall .net framework 4 restart again! and reinstall it and try again the previous steps but it fails the same i need this installed so i can view it on iis7 anyone know what i can do with this to get it working i've searched and searched and everything fails i get this error on the web platform installer Failed with 0x80070643 – Fatal Error during installation please help i cant do my work with out it working :( ok i did a few things now get this error Server Error in '/pulse' Application. • Disabling the charms bar

  How do I disable the the charms bar? I am surprised there is no easy way to disable the feature. Here's what I've done so far: 1.) Disabled right edged swipe gesture in my touchpad settings. Part of the problem is solved as this was probably the most common way the charms bar would pop up. But there are still many other ways it can pop up. 2.) Used regedit and added the key "EdgeUI" with "DisableCharmsHint" set to 1 in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\ This stopped it from popping up whenever I moved the cursor to the top right or bottom right of the screen. I mean who ever needs to move his/her mouse there? (sarcasm) But there's ANOTHER WAY it pops up: when I move the cursor to the top right of the screen followed by moving it downwards OR when I move the cursor to the bottom right of the screen followed by moving it upwards! How do I disable this method of invoking the charm bar?

• Configuring https access on HP A5120 Switch

  I am trying to configure HTTPS management on a HP a5120 switch running Version 5.20.99, Release 2215 and not having much luck. I have followed the manual by creating an SSL policy first and then enabling the HTTPS server with the SSL policy: ssl server-policy sslpol ip https ssl-server-policy sslpol ip https enable When I try and log onto the switch with Google Chrome I get the following error: Error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR): SSL protocol error. When I look this up I have found references to errors due to TLS being used in SSL. I can find no way to specify the SSL version in the server policy. The manual has a configuration example that uses MSCEP to retrieve a certificate but in Windows 2008 R2 that feature is only available in Enterprise and Datacentre editions which I don't have. I have SSH configured and it is using a locally generated certificate so I'm not sure if I can use that but I'd like to if possible. Has anybody been able to setup HTTPS management on HP A series switches without MSCEP? • Recommendation for robust, customizable, open source, Java servlet-based forum software?

  There is a lot of forum software out there, but it seems to me that a lot of the popular choices are PHP-based. And for my project, I'd like something based on Java servlets so my team can make customizations to it. Another important feature is that I can completely change the pages to hide unwanted elements without too much work. So I'm looking either for a template system or easily editable scripts (i.e. JSPs) that have a clean view separation. Just having skin changes or CSS customization is not enough. I understand that if I have open source, I can change anything I want, but my point is that it should be easy and not requiring mastery of a complex code base. Finally, I want something that has been around for at least a year and deployed on some high-traffic sites. Clustering support (one database, multiple web servers) is highly desirable. Up-time is crucial since I have an SLA to support. What do you think?

• Distortion problem with Creative audio equalizer

  Hi, I have a problem with the Creative Console EQ, I don't know if it's fixable or not (is the EQ software or hardware on these cards?). Basically, I have enormous distortion with certain sounds in the 30 - 125 hz range. When this happens I get some sort of "frrzzzz" (sorry, I'm french and don't really know the correct english word for that) on top of the original sound. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy SE. I'm using the Daniel_K drivers, on Windows 7 Profesionnal x64. All the effects are disabled except EQ. Steps to reproduce Put the card in 24bit/96khz mode. The problem is also present with 16bit/48khz but seems to be less audible. In the Creative Console, use the following EQ: (full size) Play this sound at a reasonably high volume. You should hear distortion on the two "booms". Especially the second one. Disable Creative EQ. Play the sound in an application with an integrated EQ (e.g. foobar2000, ffdshow) using the same EQ parameters. There is no distortion. Conclusion: the Creative EQ is broken. Is anyone having the same problem? I'm also interested in the results with other Creative cards or even other brands soundcards with a similar EQ feature.

I did manage to install Amazon's ec2-api-tools, which was harder than it seemed like it should have been. • Disable CTRL+mouse wheel zooming in Chrome?

  I'm a normal-sighted person and I would like to view pages at 100% all the time. I use keyboard shortcuts that involve CTRL a lot, so about twenty times a day I accidentally hit CTRL at the same time that I'm scrolling, which results in the page being reflowed and repainted. This in is annoying because it can take up to 30 seconds to fix the issue, depending on how complex the site layout is. On sites with dynamic layout such as Google Docs the problem is more serious; accidentally hitting CTRL+mouse wheel corrupts the display and forces me to refresh the page entirely, sometimes causing me to loose information in the process. I would like to either decouple CTRL+mouse wheel from zoom, or disable zoom functionality altogether. This is possible on Firefox by using about:config; is there a similar way to edit detailed settings in Chrome? Would I have access to the detailed settings if I used Chromium instead of Chrome? I'll probably jump ship back to Firefox if I can't solve this problem. There is a superuser question that asks basically the same thing I'm asking, but for Firefox and Internet Explorer exclusively. Other people on the Chrome forum have had related issues, but none have the same problem. "I would really like it if I could deactivate the auto zoom in/out." had "something with laptops and Windows 7", not the feature built into Chrome. Other people have had PDF specific issues, which doesn't concern me. I've also tried searching for extensions that allow you to disable the scroll; I had hoped that "Zoom Lock" would have the ability to lock the zoom at 100% and prevent CTRL+scroll wheel from distorting the display, but it doesn't work for my use case. • Solid State Drive Occasionally Freezes For A Minute While OS Is "Beach Balling"

  Almost a month ago I bought Intel 330 128GB solid state drive, migrated my data with Intel branded limited-feature Acronis from old HDD to new SSD, optimized with Intel Toolbox and started using it. Occassionally I get close to 1 minute freezes while seeing operating system "beach balls" and animations still work, I can interact and click on something but nothing responds, nothing loads. Recently a couple of such freezes occurred in shorter amount of time in a row. I have noticed that if I stop interacting with laptop, the freeze lasts less time than if I was interacting with laptop. But the bigger problem is when freeze just does not end and computer keeps being stuck unlil it is more than half hour and I run out of patience to keep waiting and feeling I need to restart the system because I am not getting anywhere. Such freeze happened while laptop was cold booting into Windows 7. This is when freeze hang occurred and I had to restart, only later to be greeted with Windows recovery screen stating something about faiure of boot sector and asking to insert Windows repair CD. But after I restarted, Windows booted successfully and all was well. I have filmed video of freeze hang occurring in cold boot which you can see here (on video page look below for description): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b7MQlcDTUs As I have mentioned in the beginning, the SSD is less than a month old but here is S.M.A.R.T statistics just in case (TRIM is enabled btw according to CrystalDiskInfo): I want to emphasize that this SSD is the only drive I have, yet it is working in RAID mode (it was enabled initially in BIOS by previous laptop's owner) on Intel Rapid Storage drivers. I am contemplating about switching to AHCI mode but want to be sure this won't cause data loss. Additionally, the stock firmware is the only firmware available currently, yet Intel does not respond to my posts in their community board. If anyone here has this SSD model or generally has experience with SSD drives, I would love to know your thoughts.

• File Sync Solution for Batch Processing (ETL)

  I'm looking for a slightly different kind of sync utility - not one designed to keep two directories identical, but rather one intended to keep files flowing from one host to another. The context is a data warehouse that currently has a custom-developed solution that moves 10,000 files a day, some of which are 1+ gbytes gzipped files, between linux servers via ssh. Files are produced by the extract process, then moved to the transform server where a transform daemon is waiting to pick them up. The same process happens between transform & load. Once the files are moved they are typically archived on the source for a week, and the downstream process likewise moves them to temp then archive as it consumes them. So, my requirements & desires: It is never used to refresh updated files - only used to deliver new files. Because it's delivering files to downstream processes - it needs to rename the file once done so that a partial file doesn't get picked up. In order to simplify recovery, it should keep a copy of the source files - but rename them or move them to another directory. If the transfer fails (network down, file system full, permissions, file locked, etc), then it should retry periodically - and never fail in a non-recoverable way, or a way that sends the file twice or never sends the file. Should be able to copy files to 2+ destinations. Should have a consolidated log so that it's easy to find problems Should have an optional checksum feature Any recommendations? Can Unison do this well?

• Configuring ZenOSS to monitor CPU load

  I'm trying test out monitoring tools for a network at work with a coworker but neither of us have ever used an sort of monitoring tools before. Currently we are experimenting with ZenOSS and having some difficulties. We want to populate our CPU load graphs because that is one of the primary feature we are looking for in our monitoring tools but we have been unable to populate the graphs with data. So far we have installed the wmipreformance, sqldatasource, wmidatasource, snmpperformance(simple) zenpacks and the machine we are trying to monitor is running Windows XP. We have tried to model the device and everything seems to run and we've tride to add data points to graphs but the only options we recieve for graphs are CPU and Memory. We are able to monitor services, ZenOSS recognizes the make and model of the processor, RAM, and Harddrive and is even giving us metrics on available storage but again, we are looking for performance metrics such as CPU load and Memory utilization. I realize I probably didn't provide a lot of information but that is because we don't have a very good idea of what we are doing and can't find instruction either on the ZenOSS homepage or forums to monitor CPU load. If someone could give us step by step instruction on how to set up CPU load monitoring that would probably be more beneficial to us than a diagnostic of our current setup, but regardless, if I left any important information out and you need it to answer the question, please let me know. • Typing Japanese on Windows Vista with Dvorak

  I'm using Windows Vista, and I type English with the Dvorak keyboard layout, and I want to be able to type Japanese text that way, too. I've figured out how to set it up to let me type Japanese here, but it uses QWERTY. What I've got so far is: click the "EN" in the taskbar, and select "JP" if the letter that appears in the taskbar is "A", hit alt-~ to change it to "?" type as if I was typing Romaji on a QWERTY keyboard, (e.g., left pinky home row, right ring finger top row), and hiragana appear (??) press spacebar to convert to kanji (e.g., ?), and return to accept That all works great, but it assumes I'm on QWERTY, which isn't very comfortable for me. I want everything the same, but to be able to type kana with Dvorak (e.g., left pinky home row, left ring finger home row - ??). I can do this on Mac OS, so it's not an unheard-of feature. But it was kind of an obscure setting to find, so I figure on Windows it's probably a really obscure setting. :-) But I haven't been able to find it yet. Thanks!

• Can two mocha for After Effects X-Spline Layers be merged ?

  Hello, I'm new to mocha for After Effects, but like the auto tracking feature. There are a few markers I'm adding, but there's one which is giving me a bit of a headache. I'm tracking a circle that moves around a larger object, so it moves in front of it initially, then behind, being occluded by the larger object, then in front again. I tried to track the circle in the first part(when it's in front, before being occluded) and in the second part(when it's in front again, coming out on the other side of the large object) using a single X-Spline. The problem is the second part starts in a different location and I don't know how to 'move' the X-Spline to the new position and track from there, without affecting the previous keyframes. As a workaround I use two X-Spline Layers, export the data to .txt files, then manually merge the two files into a new one containing keyframes from both X-Spline Layers. Is there an easier way to do this (either merging two X-Spline Layer, or using a single X-Spline Layer that can move to a new location without affecting previous keyframes) ? Any suggestion would help.

• What are the requirements for Windows Remote Assistance over Teredo?

  I try to get the Windows 7 (or Vista) remote assistance feature to work, without using UPnP on the novices computer. After enabling Teredo on the expert's computer (that is in a corporate network, and therefore has teredo disabled by default), I tried to connect to the novice both using Easy Connect and the invitation file with no success. My triubleshooting included the following (so far). A connection to the novice from my home pc was successful, hinting at a misconfiguration on the experts side. Both computers have a "qualified" connection to the Teredo Server. Both computers have a valid Teredo IP, access to the Global_ PNRP cloud and can resolve names registered with PNRP on the other computer. The expert can resolve the PNRP Id automatically generated with an Easy Connect help request Both computers can ping the other's PNRP name. Both computers can ping the other's Teredo IP Address using ping -6 Now, I am a little stumped. I expected Remote Assistance to work at this point, since my corporate firewall has no Teredo filtering. What could RA cause not to work in this setting? Thanks in advance!

• Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu

  I'm coming to Windows 7 from XP, and there are aspects of the start menu search that I like. However, there are some behaviors that seem either inconsistent or surprising to me. For example: If I type "Pa" into the search bar, Paint is the first result (under the "Programs" heading), and it is selected for me. I can just hit Enter to start the program If I have a standalone exe "testing" on my desktop, and I type "test", the program comes up as the first item (under the "Files" heading), but it is not selected for me. I have to hit down-down-down-enter to open it from the keyboard. The same appears to be true for shortcuts and folders. What classifies something as a "Program" verses a "File"? Is there any way to configure the start menu so that the first search result is always selected? As a heavy keyboard user, it seems insane for the behavior to be inconsistent, and to require so many keypresses to select the top result. Also, are there resources that document the details, limitations, and tricks of the start menu search? (For example, a "Proc Exp" search will match "Process Explorer", but not "ProcessExplorer") EDIT: I've found that instead of hitting down-down-down to select the first item (when no Programs are in the list), you can just hit tab. This helps a bit, but the inconsistent behavior still makes this search feature more awkward and frustrating than necessary.

• mshtml.dll latest version for Internet Explorer 8, Windows XP Service Pack 3

  Many applications in my system (Internet Explorer 8, Yahoo Messenger, Skype 10) are crashing and error details shows module name mshtml.dll. I checked the version of mshtml.dll in system32 folder. It is 8.0.6001.19170. My Internet Explorer version is 8.0.6001.18702. I am not concerned about crash of IE, because I generally use Firefox, but how do I solve the crashes in other applications, which are due to mshtml.dll? I have moved to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (32 bit). I have tried to update Internet Explorer 8 (from Tools-Windows Update), but again it crashes. I can not migrate to IE 9, as it requires Vista or Windows 7. I have applied Cumulative Security update for IE8, which has this file name: IE8-WindowsXP-KB2618444-x86-ENU.exe I could not get much info from Microsoft sites or Google. I do not want to use Automatic Updates feature of Windows. Can somebody give the download links for mshtml.dll and any associated files, which I can replace in system32 folder? Thanks.
