• Using a SMTP Service for email

  This may be a horribly obvious question, but I'm learning and just need someone to confirm it for me. I putting together a private social network that needs to email their members (through the social network software, Elgg) regularly. I'm hosting it on a shared HostGator plan (because they won't receive much traffic) and they'll email 10-1000 emails a few times a week. HostGator restricts you to 500 per hour. I'm also worried about deliverability. I've been searching up and down about how to throttle the emails so it will all send reliably... but then I came across the idea of an outside SMTP relay service. Would using an SMTP service resolve this issue? If so, any opinions on quality SMTP services?

The length of time it took me to find it makes me suspicious of its quality. 3 related questions: do professional PHP coders read/care about php|architect? is it a good source for PHP beginners? assuming yes to either of the above, how far back in the archives to articles remain relevant? (ex: does stuff written about PHP4 still matter?)

• Cardinality Estimation Bug with Lookups in SQL Server 2008 onward

  Cost-based optimization stands or falls on the quality of cardinality estimates (expected row counts).  If the optimizer has incorrect information to start with, it is quite unlikely to produce good quality execution plans except by chance.  There are many ways we can provide good starting information to the optimizer, and even more ways for cardinality estimation to go wrong.  Good database people know this, and work hard to write optimizer-friendly queries with a schema and metadata (e.g. statistics) that reduce the chances of poor cardinality estimation producing a sub-optimal plan.  Today, I am going to look at a case where poor cardinality estimation is Microsoft’s fault, and not yours. SQL Server 2005 SELECT th.ProductID, th.TransactionID, th.TransactionDate FROM Production.TransactionHistory AS th WHERE th.ProductID = 1 AND th.TransactionDate BETWEEN '20030901' AND '20031231'; The query plan on SQL Server 2005 is as follows (if you are using a more recent version of AdventureWorks, you will need to change the year on the date range from 2003 to 2007): There is an Index Seek on ProductID = 1, followed by a Key Lookup to find the Transaction Date for each row, and finally a Filter to restrict the results to only those rows where Transaction Date falls in the range specified.  The cardinality estimate of 45 rows at the Index Seek is exactly correct.  The table is not very large, there are up-to-date statistics associated with the index, so this is as expected. The estimate for the Key Lookup is also exactly right.  Each lookup into the Clustered Index to find the Transaction Date is guaranteed to return exactly one row.  The plan shows that the Key Lookup is expected to be executed 45 times.  The estimate for the Inner Join output is also correct – 45 rows from the seek joining to one row each time, gives 45 rows as output. The Filter estimate is also very good: the optimizer estimates 16.9951 rows will match the specified range of transaction dates.  Eleven rows are produced by this query, but that small difference is quite normal and certainly nothing to worry about here.  All good so far. SQL Server 2008 onward The same query executed against an identical copy of AdventureWorks on SQL Server 2008 produces a different execution plan: The optimizer has pushed the Filter conditions seen in the 2005 plan down to the Key Lookup.  This is a good optimization – it makes sense to filter rows out as early as possible.  Unfortunately, it has made a bit of a mess of the cardinality estimates. The post-Filter estimate of 16.9951 rows seen in the 2005 plan has moved with the predicate on Transaction Date.  Instead of estimating one row, the plan now suggests that 16.9951 rows will be produced by each clustered index lookup – clearly not right!  This misinformation also confuses SQL Sentry Plan Explorer: Plan Explorer shows 765 rows expected from the Key Lookup (it multiplies a rounded estimate of 17 rows by 45 expected executions to give 765 rows total). Workarounds One workaround is to provide a covering non-clustered index (avoiding the lookup avoids the problem of course): CREATE INDEX nc1 ON Production.TransactionHistory (ProductID) INCLUDE (TransactionDate); With the Transaction Date filter applied as a residual predicate in the same operator as the seek, the estimate is again as expected: We could also force the use of the ultimate covering index (the clustered one): SELECT th.ProductID, th.TransactionID, th.TransactionDate FROM Production.TransactionHistory AS th WITH (INDEX(1)) WHERE th.ProductID = 1 AND th.TransactionDate BETWEEN '20030901' AND '20031231'; Summary Providing a covering non-clustered index for all possible queries is not always practical, and scanning the clustered index will rarely be optimal.  Nevertheless, these are the best workarounds we have today. In the meantime, watch out for poor cardinality estimates when a predicate is applied as part of a lookup. The worst thing is that the estimate after the lookup join in the 2008+ plans is wrong.  It’s not hopelessly wrong in this particular case (45 versus 16.9951 is not the end of the world) but it easily can be much worse, and there’s not much you can do about it.  Any decisions made by the optimizer after such a lookup could be based on very wrong information – which can only be bad news. • Proper way to create and work with a subdomain?

  My site got effected by Panda, and I am trying to see if making a subdomain would work. The site is comehike.com, and I created a subdomain which is currently empty at hiking.comehike.com I have a directory /outdoors that has some high quality hand-written articles. I want to put those into the new subdomain to see what would happen. My questions are: Should I just copy and paste the files for those pages into the new subdomain's folder, and just change all the links in all my pages from the original domain to the new subdomain? Should I just do a 301 redirect to the new subdomain? Since test.site.com and www.site.com are different domains, will the new page have to start from scratch in terms of Pagerank, and its rankings in the SERPs?

• Should I demand unit-testing from programmers?

  I work at a place, where we buy a lot of IT-projects. We are currently producing a standard for systems-requirements for the requisition of future projects. In that process, We are discussing whether or not we can demand automated unit testing from our suppliers. I firmly believe, that proper automated unit-testing is the only way to document the quality and stability of the code. Everyone else seems to think that unit-testing is an optional method that concerns the supplier alone. Thus, we will make no demands of automated unit-testing, continous testing, coverage-reports, inspections of unit-tests or any of the kind. I find this policy extremely frustrating. Am I totally out of line here? Please provide me with arguments for any of the oppinions.

• Why are the colors worse on Ubuntu 12.04 than on Windows 7 on my Sony Vaio E-Series?

  The colours look "lacking" and ever slightly blueish and rather washed-out and lacking in dimension. Graphics are ok - this page for example looks fine - but if I view something like a news site with high quality photos, the experience is not optimal and is noticeably inferior to Windows 7. Oddly, when I install Ubuntu as a VM on VirtualBox in Windows, the colours look as I expect them to. It's only on my dual-boot version of Ubuntu that they look wrong (not Wubi, although a previous Wubi-based installation had the same problem). Now, I have the proprietary ATI driver and I can use amdcccle to get the colours closer to what they should be, but I can't seem to do anything about colour depth. The depth settings in Xorg are all 24. I tried changing all three mentions of 24 to 32 but was forced into safety mode. Fortunately, I remembered where I'd been tinkering and got the file set back to 24.

• How can I record an OpenGL game in Ubuntu?

  I would like to create a short clip of me playing Minecraft, an OpenGL game. The usual screencast recorders do not properly record OpenGL. What kind of software is available for this purpose? My experience with the software in the similar (but no longer duplicate) question: kazam: very low framerate despite setting to 60 FPS, no sound, unity menubar constantly flashing through the fullscreen window. RecordMyDesktop: max framerate setting is 50 FPS, but the video becomes extremely fast if not using the default 15 FPS. xvidcap: not available on 12.04 tibesti: not available on 12.04 wink: does not run ffmpeg: very low quality video and no sound with the recommended settings, might be tunable though (no gui unfortunately). kdenlive: uses recordmydesktop, and the recorded clip becomes corrupted aconv: video sped up, often broken image, no sound

• What a week! Oracle OpenWorld & Maria Bartiromo (CNBC)

  It's been a week since the end of Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne and both events were a huge success! We had many announcements including Oracle ADF Mobile, Oracle ADF Essentials, Oracle Developer Cloud Service and tons more.  Above is a picture I snapped of Maria Bartiromo from CNBC, who was there to interview Larry Ellison and Mark Hurd.  The stage was right in the midst of the booths that showcased new products, at Moscone North.  She's such a pro. With all the noise and people milling around gawking and taking pictures (myself included) she was solid & composed.   Her level of focus and the production quality of the show is impressive. She later stopped by for a demo of OEPE's  new support for Oracle ADF as well as Oracle Developer Cloud Service. She seemed impressed too. ;-)

We are picky in who we hire and have really good retention rate (most of the devs have been here for an average of 5-6 years). We've been spending a lot of developers' and HR time and have a low applications to hire ratio. Here's the process we use: HR Interview on phone - Involves asking basic behaviorial and tech questions Online test - Involves a 30 minute technical test Technical Phone interview - A 60 minute interview by a developer Onsite Interview - A 60-90 minute interview by several senior developers Although this process has been working, we've been spending way too much time on interviews. Any thoughts on how this can be done differently? Our goal is to automate any tasks if possible still retaining the quality of talent.

• What are the advantages of a $ SKU of VS2012 over Express?

  I will be using Visual Studio only for creating C#/XAML Windows Store apps. Is there any reason for me to purchase a "Professional" SKU of VS 2012 rather than just using the Express (free) "Metro apps with C#/XAML" version? The only thing I can think of is that I won't be able to use Resharper in the Express version (which I've already purchased a license for, but I use it at work, so that won't be a waste of money if I can't use it at home) - plus, I believe that even the Express SKU of VS 2012 will have similar code quality utility built in.
