  • Custom .NET apps and clustering

    - by Ahmed ilyas
So for a clustered environment - how would this work with your apps? what about your own custom .NET apps? Would there be a special way to develop them? I know that you can say create a simple Hello world app, and cluster that but they wouldnt be something you could see interms of the UI or anything, so they would effectively need to be developed as a Windows Service perhaps or even as a standard Console app which runs and not wait for user input but you wouldnt see any output from it (unless you redirect output to somewhere else) What im getting at here is... for those who have experience or developed a cluster application in .NET, how did you do it and what are the things to be aware of? For example we have the cloud service - fundamentally its built on clustering - if there is an outage, another node takes place and service is resumed as normal but we dont really see much of that downtime.

  • c++ template: 'is not derived from type'

    - by Allan
I do not understand why this code is not valid: #include <vector> template <typename T> class A{ public: A() { v.clear(); } std::vector<A<T> *>::const_iterator begin(){ return v.begin(); } private: std::vector<A<T> *> v; }; When compiling it with gcc, it get the following error: test.cpp:8: error: type 'std::vector<A<T>*, std::allocator<A<T>*> >' is not derived from type 'A<T>' test.cpp:8: error: expected ';' before 'begin' test.cpp:12: error: expected `;' before 'private' What is wrong, and how to fix it??

  • Is an ArrayList automatically declared static in Java, if it is an instance variable?

    - by Alex
I'm trying to do something like this: private class aClass { private ArrayList<String> idProd; aClass(ArrayList<String> prd) { this.idProd=new ArrayList<String>(prd); } public ArrayList<String> getIdProd() { return this.idProd; } } So if I have multiple instances of ArrayLIst<String> (st1 ,st2 ,st3) and I want to make new objects of aClass: { aClass obj1,obj2,obj3; obj1=new aClass(st1); obj2=new aClass(st2); obj3=new aClass(st3); } Will all of the aClass objects return st3 if I access the method getIdProd() for each of them(obj1..obj3)? Is an ArrayList as an instance variable automatically declared static?

  • What reasons are there to place member functions before member variables or vice/versa?

    - by Cory Klein
Given a class, what reasoning is there for either of the two following code styles? Style A: class Foo { private: doWork(); int bar; } Style B: class Foo { private: int bar; doWork(); } For me, they are a tie. I like Style A because the member variables feel more fine-grained, and thus would appear past the more general member functions. However, I also like Style B, because the member variables seem to determine, in a OOP-style way, what the class is representing. Are there other things worth considering when choosing between these two styles?

  • Getting Started Integrating Windows Azure with Microsoft Office Solutions

Nearly everyone starts learning anything new by beginning with something simple and adding incremental knowledge. One of the biggest challenges with Windows Azure and SQL Azure is that the simple beginning seems a bit more elusive. The "Hello World" application in the new world of cloud computing, while not overly complex in concept, requires a good measure of preparation and configuration. The following content is designed to aid you in getting started with Windows Azure and SQL Azure in the spirit...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How do we name test methods where we are checking for more than one condition?

    - by Sandbox
I follow the technique specified in Roy Osherove's The Art Of Unit Testing book while naming test methods - MethodName_Scenario_Expectation. It suits perfectly well for my 'unit' tests. But,for tests that I write in 'controller' or 'coordinator' class, there isn't necessarily a method which I want to test. For these tests, I generate multiple conditions which make up one scenario and then I verify the expectation. For example, I may set some properties on different instances, generate an event and then verify that my expectation from controller/coordinator is being met. Now, my controller handles events using a private event handler. Here my scenario is that, I set some properties, say 3 condition1,condition2 and condition3 Also, my scenario includes an event is raised I don't have a method name as my event handler is private. How do I name such a test method?

  • Properties.Settings.Default.Default.Save() does not work

    - by Akshay
I have created code in WPF to let the window remember its last location like this: private void Window_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { try { Rect storedLoc = Properties.Settings.Default.WindowSavedLocation; this.Top = storedLoc.Top; this.Left = storedLoc.Left; } catch { MessageBox.Show("No settings stored !"); } } private void Window_Closed(object sender, EventArgs e) { Properties.Settings.Default.WindowSavedLocation = RestoreBounds; Properties.Settings.Default.Save(); } When I build the application I can see that the app.exe.config file has the setting WindowSavedLocation but it just does not save and throws no exception. Everytime I run the application, it says "No settings stored !". It's scope is user.

  • Fastest way to move records from a oracle DB into MS sql server after processing

    - by user347748
Hi.. Ok this is the scenario...I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in MS SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a datareader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isnt slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. BUt when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. I have seen that most of the time consumed is in calling the stored procedure and waiting for it to return. Is there a better way of doing this? Here is a snippet of the actual code Function StartDataXfer() As Boolean Dim status As Boolean = False Try SqlConn.Open() OraConn.Open() c.ErrorLog(Now.ToString & "--Going to Get the messages from oracle", 1) If GetMsgsFromOracle() Then c.ErrorLog(Now.ToString & "--Got messages from oracle", 1) If ProcessMessages() Then c.ErrorLog(Now.ToString & "--Finished Processing all messages in the • respond_to? and protected methods

    - by mlomnicki
It may not be so obvious how respond_to? works in ruby. Consider that: class A def public_method end protected def protected_method end private def private_method end end obj = A.new obj.respond_to?(:public_method) # true - that's pretty obvious obj.respond_to?(:private_method) # false - as expected obj.respond_to?(:protected_method) # true - WTF? So if 'obj' responds to protected_method we should expect obj.protected_method not to raise an exception, shouldn't we? ...but it raises obviously Documentation points that calling respond_to? with 2nd argument set to true check private method as well obj.respond_to?(:private_method, true) # true And that's far more reasonable So the question is how to check if object responds to public method only? Is there a solution better than that? obj.methods.include?(:public_method) # true obj.methods.include?(:protected_method) # false

  • What's the difference between AppMobi and PhoneGap?

    - by Ajmal
I am new to the cross platform application development. I came across the very similar cross platform frameworks AppMobi and PhoneGaP. I found the basic difference between appmobi and phonegap is appMobi offers a complete cloud-based development system that includes a the XDK development tool. ie It's possible to develop Apple apps without owning a Mac using appMobi. I want to know Is there any differences between apk/ipa created using Appmobi and apk/ipa created using PhoneGap? Is there any difference in native features that can be used ? Also other differences between these two.

  • Problem invoking C DLL in C#

    - by CristiC
I'm currently trying to invoke a method made in C from C# C code looks like this: extern "C" int addSum(int a, int b) { return a*b; } extern "C" int getCount() { return 12; } and C# code looks like this: [DllImport("mydll.dll", SetLastError=true)] private static extern int addSum(IntPtr a, IntPtr b); [DllImport("mydll.dll", SetLastError = true)] private static extern int getCount(); public static int mySum(int a, int b) { return suma(a, b); } public static int getMyCount() { return getCount(); } The code returns the right values but i'm getting the following error: addSum' has unbalanced the stack. This is likely because the managed PInvoke signature does not match the unmanaged target signature. Check that the calling convention and parameters of the PInvoke signature match the target unmanaged signature. Any sugestion regarding this issue ? Thanks

  • If a company is using ubuntu on its servers/dektops, does it have to pay?

    - by rsjethani
a friend of my friend has started a small firm and given me the responsibility to erect all the IT infrastructure required? I'm basically a windows guy that too on the developer side. But recently I fell in love with Linux n dared to dream about becoming a Linux admin and play with Linux, virtualization, cloud etc. So, first I'll be running a pilot project of creating mail/ftp/web servers required on a Linux based server. And Ubuntu is the ideal choice for a Linux beginner right? my question is simple: if a commercial organization is using Ubuntu for it's day to day desktop and server(mail, ftp etc) uses but has technicians which can provide support internally then do the organization needs to pay for Ubuntu? If yes then could you please suggest a Debian based distro on the lines of CentOS. Also can I use the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit desktop version instead of the no gui server version for the server machine(gui can be helpful for a windows guy like me) thanks.

  • Factory vs instance constructors

    - by Neil N
I can't think of any reasons why one is better than the other. Compare these two implementations: public class MyClass { public myClass(string fileName) { // some code... } } as opposed to: public class MyClass { private myClass(){} public static Create(string fileName) { // some code... } } There are some places in the .Net framework that use the static method to create instances. At first I was thinking, it registers it's instances to keep track of them, but regular constructors could do the same thing through the use of private static variables. What is the reasoning behind this style?

  • Generics limitation, or lack of skillz ?

    - by Two Shoes
I want to define the following class as such: public class CollectionAttribute<E extends Collection<T>> { private String name; private E value; public CollectionAttribute(String name, E value) { this.name = name; this.value = value; } public E getValue() { return value; } public void addValue(T value) { value.add(T); } } This won't compile (cannot resolve symbol T). If I replace the class declaration with the following: public class CollectionAttribute<E extends Collection<?>> Then I can't reference the parametrized type of the collection. Am I missing something or have I reached a limitation with generics in Java ?

  • Can I set Ubuntu 12.10 to automatically reboot to Windows once only?

    - by Bill Tetzeli
Is there some way when I'm in Ubuntu 12.10 that I can set it to reboot automatically to Windows just once, so that when I'm in Windows I can reboot and it will automatically boot back into Ubuntu? I need this because often when I travel I access my home computer for email and other personal info that I don't want to travel with or leave to the tender mercies of the "cloud". On rare occasions, I need to temporarily boot into Windows 7 to do something Windows-specific, but then I want to be able to boot back into Ubuntu because that's where most of my computing takes place. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Bill

  • Why is "sudo virsh" hanging in the console?

    - by technophobia
I wanted to experiment with OpenStack on my iMac: So I installed Ubuntu Cloud Live Image on a VM and I also ran DevStack on a fresh Ubuntu 64-bit Server VM. The DevStack script hangs on the following line: instances=`sudo virsh list --all | grep $INSTANCE_NAME_PREFIX | sed "s/.*\($INSTANCE_NAME_PREFIX[0-9a-fA-F]*\).*/\1/g"` I commented that block and ran the script again, this time it did not hang; thus completing its run. I attempted to run sudo virsh list --all on my CloudLive VM and it just hands until I break out of it. Why is sudo virsh hanging? Your help is appreciated. Note 1: The virsh command responds without sudo. Note 2: Not sure it matters, but I'm running my Virtual Machines in VMWare Fusion.

  • Issues querying Access '07 database in C#

    - by Kye
I'm doing a .NET unit as part of my studies. I've only just started, with a lecturer that as kinda failed to give me the most solid foundation with .NET, so excuse the noobishness. I'm making a pretty simple and generic database-driven application. I'm using C# and I'm accessing a Microsoft Access 2007 database. I've put the database-ish stuff in its own class with the methods just spitting out OleDbDataAdapters that I use for committing. I feed any methods which preform a query a DataSet object from the main program, which is where I'm keeping the data (multiple tables in the db). I've made a very generic private method that I use to perform SQL SELECT queries and have some public methods wrapping that method to get products, orders.etc (it's a generic retail database). The generic method uses a separate Connect method to actually make the connection, and it is as follows: private static OleDbConnection Connect() { OleDbConnection conn = new OleDbConnection( @"Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0; Data Source=C:\Temp\db.accdb"); return conn; } The generic method is as follows: private static OleDbDataAdapter GenericSelectQuery( DataSet ds, string namedTable, String selectString) { OleDbCommand oleCommand = new OleDbCommand(); OleDbConnection conn = Connect(); oleCommand.CommandText = selectString; oleCommand.Connection = conn; oleCommand.CommandType = CommandType.Text; OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter(); adapter.SelectCommand = oleCommand; adapter.MissingSchemaAction = MissingSchemaAction.AddWithKey; adapter.Fill(ds, namedTable); return adapter; } The wrapper methods just pass along the DataSet that they received from the main program, the namedtable string is the name of the table in the dataset, and you pass in the query you wish to make. It doesn't matter which query I give it (even something simple like SELECT * FROM TableName) I still get thrown an OleDbException, stating that there was en error with the FROM clause of the query. I've just resorted to building the queries with Access, but there's still no use. Obviously there's something wrong with my code, which wouldn't actually surprise me. Here are some wrapper methods I'm using. public static OleDbDataAdapter GetOrderLines(DataSet ds) { OleDbDataAdapter adapter = GenericSelectQuery( ds, "orderlines", "SELECT OrderLine.* FROM OrderLine;"); return adapter; } They all look the same, it's just the SQL that changes.

  • Formatting Field Declarations in Eclipse

Greetings Overflowers, Problem: public abstract class Filter { private long id; protected String expression; } how can I align fields automatically in Eclipse, such in: public abstract class Filter { private long id; protected String expression; } Note the space before long, thank you ! UPDATE: I cannot find a customization option to align types of class members (e.g.: long and String) under Eclipse formatter options. Yes, there is one to align names of class members (e.g.: id and expression) but not their types. Please, take a lock at this issue in my examples above. Any solution ?

  • Is there a better way to minimize this C# event repetition?

    - by Damien Wildfire

In Ruby I'd be able to do something like this: class Microwave has_events :door_closed, :lightbulb_on, ... end Is there a similar shorter way of removing this boilerplate in C#?

  • Task.wait not working as I imagined

    - by user2357446
I am trying to download a file, wait for the file to finish downloading, and then read the file afterwards. I have the following methods to do this: private async Task startDownload(string link, string savePath) { WebClient client = new WebClient(); client.DownloadProgressChanged += new DownloadProgressChangedEventHandler(client_DownloadProgressChanged); client.DownloadFileCompleted += new AsyncCompletedEventHandler(client_DownloadFileCompleted); await client.DownloadFileTaskAsync(new Uri(link), savePath); } private void checkUpdateButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Task task = Task.Factory.StartNew(() => startDownload(versionLink, versionSaveTo)); task.Wait(); if (task.IsCompleted) { checkVersion(); } } The checkVersion() method reads the file that was downloaded. This is throwing an IOException saying that the file is in use by something else and cannot be read. I thought that having task.Wait would prevent the rest of the method from executing until the task was finished?
