• How to add metadata to images using Shotwell

  Using Ubuntu 13.04. I have a very basic question about Shotwell. I would like to add a desciption to my photos. I right-click on an image in Nautilus. Choose Open with Shotwell photo viewer. I can't find a way to edit any metadata for the photo. As an example, Shotwell help: http://yorba.org/shotwell/help/view-view.html ... says that I should be able to select Photos Edit title, but I don't have this option in my menu. (I have 'Photo' but not 'Photos'). F2 does nothing for me. My menu options are: File, Edit, View, Photo, Help. I'm missing something very basic here. Grateful for your help!

• is this the correct way to use glTexCoordPointer?

  Hey all Just trying to work out how to use this function glTexCoordPointer. Here is the man pages http://www.opengl.org/sdk/docs/man/xhtml/glTexCoordPointer.xml which states that I must set a pointer to the first element of the array that uses the texture cordinate. • Dual boot: Linux Grub loader does not show windows

  my computer previously only had windows installed on it. Recently I decided to try Linux and opted for a dual boot so I installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit on a separate hard drive within my computer. After installation my computer would directly boot to Linux upon start up and did not even show a grub screen. Using the boot-repair I was finally able to make the Grub loader show a boot list upon start up, but the Windows partition is not there. • I can't login to facebook from any browser

  I'm Using UBUNTU 12.04. I'm having problems with Facebook. It really hard to login. Takes like 3 or 5 min. At first I thought it was a flash problem but then I realized it could be some proxy's conf file. Other sites doesn't have problems. Yesterday I tried Tor-browser-bundle and I installed privoxy using this rules http://www.neilvandyke.org/privoxy-rules/ . Today I removed privoxy and the conf file with the Ubuntu software center and ubuntu-tweak. I don't really find the problem and my windows pc does not have any problem with the same modem. I don't have an ISP'S PROXY it just a direct Internet connection using automatic DHCP. Maybe I am missing something else. But I want to be sure so, I'm asking. PD: Sorry for my English I'm Argentinian.

• Which app can I use for easily annotating pictures/screenshots?

  Often I need to annotate (draw some arrows, lines, basic shapes like squares, ellipses etc and enter some text) on top of pictures (JPG, PNG images) and screenshots (again png images). I would also need to be able to crop, resize etc. I tried the Gimp but I could only enter text and perform all image transformations but couldn't find a way to draw boxes etc. I finally settled to Openoffice.org draw, but I know that isn't what I want, because in oodraw I need to insert my pic into a drawing and resize it (or the drawing) to fit and then go about making changes and finally export to png... Is there any image editor that allows adding shapes and text to jpg & png files and save the modified file in its place? If the tool can also have template collections (like dia does) for shapes that is an added bonus.

• Lock screen elements frozen on desktop

  I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured. • UndoRedo on Nodes (Part 2)

  After the recording of the latest API Design Tip for the upcoming NetBeans Podcast, Jaroslav Tulach helped me with the problem I blogged about yesterday. First he expressed surprise at seeing Undo/Redo work on Nodes, which was never the intention, i.e., that feature was always intended for documents, e.g., the Java editor. However, he then showed me where to find the Properties window in the NetBeans sources, where it is org.netbeans.core.windows.view.ui.NbSheet. It turns out that the Properties window does not have an activated node and hence the Node that implements UndoRedo.Manager is never put in the Lookup. Once we added, on line 303, "this.setActivatedNodes(nodes);", everything worked as expected, i.e., the Undo/Redo actions are now enabled, even when the Properties window is selected: Maybe it means I should file an issue to get that line added to NbSheet?

The wikipedia link above is an overview of the concept. The short form explanation is that a co-op is a worker-owned business. Also there is the notion that every worker owns shares in the business. I am interested in knowing whether an example of a "programmer's/IT co-op" even exists. Note: I am not talking about nor asking about a government-funded incubator nor any other socialized, state supported group. I also don't mean "co-working", which is renting an office with other self employed people doing their own thing. I mean a going, profitable IT business operating in a competitive environment that is worker-owned and run.

• Can I use my VirtualBox 3.* VMs with VirtualBox 4.0? If so, how come the repository doesn't have it?

  I had the following repository for virtualbox in my /etc/apt/sources.list: deb ttp://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian maverick non-free Then I found out there was a new version when I opened it today (the program prompted me with a window to manually download it from Oracle's site). Then I tried sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and got nothing. Here you have a way to add virtualbox-4.0 to your apt-get, but the problem is that it isn't updating, meaning I would have the two installed. I'm also worried if I'll have to do something like that each time it updates since that would defeat the point of apt-get. I've been using virtualbox with the apt-get update for more than a year now and this is the first time it has happened, so I was wondering if there would be a way to just update my current installation.

  I am in the early stages of creating an open source C# library that would allow developers to drop in the open SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/) into an existing project. Abstracted it is a complex set of tightly coupled business rules. Having previously worked on an adaptive object model project for health care risk management I began with that pattern in mind. Due to the high coupling of rules it is becoming apparent that the project may require some kind of scripting. Have started researching DSL implementation I am now considering scraping the adaptive object model for a domain specific language. I have not work with domain specific languages so my question is it reasonable to assume a domain specific language can be used to representing the open SRD?

  On http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ there is only RPM version - when great majority of Desktop Linux users are using systems based on APT... ppa:libreoffice/ppa seems to be very outdated with version 3.5 It's frustating to see several fixes on Windows version and Ubuntu versions so outdated... People generally reply as: we don't update due to security/stability reasons, etc example 1 example 2 why don't you compile yourself ? For those easy answers, I generally reply: let me decide which version to use at my own risk. I just want to try a newer version and I trust on LibreOffice devs. I understand that update a core lib is very dangerous but Libreoffice is an user application and it don't just break the whole system. Why don't I compile ? Because I am a regular user and don't have time to learn it. I would love to have this time but unfortunately, I don't have. Red Hat/Fedora guys have the same concerns but they update their LibreOffices...

• Ubuntu One slow download sync speed

  I am having problems syncing my Ubuntu One files with my Ubuntu 12.04 fresh installation. Everything went well during the setup phase. Now, I am trying to sync back in my folders in my U1 account and the transfer speed is extremely slow. I am averaging a 15kb/s transfer speed. I tried uninstalling ubuntuone-client and reinstalling it. It did not fixed the problem. Right now U1 is stuck downloading a 50mb file. It is taking forever. Any ideas?   I'm behind NAT, so I can't access pool.ntp.org or Ubuntu's own time servers directly, and I'd like to change the time servers for my system. When googling, I find references to missing manpages like ntpd.conf(5) and ntpd(8), to a missing GUI for setting the time servers, and to a cron script (/etc/cron.daily/ntpdate) that doesn't seem to exist on my system. I've also found a reference to there being changes to ntpd.conf, so I'm hesitant to just create that file in /etc. How is one supposed to change the time servers in 11.10?

  I know that some some text editors have problems to show long lines https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172099 . What is the best way to fix the bug or are they equally well? Modify the GTK+ source code and add a support for long lines. Modify the text editor source code such that it does not use GTK+ if it meets a long line. Split the long lines into part (maybe by cut on the Bash ) I'm just a junior programmer so I don't know what people does when they meet a bug that is on the library they use.

  I am searching for any good site that teaches C++, that can explain most to all things about it(general) and has a decent active community. About Me: I am new to programming(knows nothing of it, so please bare with me), I have only learned(to a very basic form) LUA scripting Language, so yes I am your complete newbie. I got interested in programming, from scripting in LUA, so you can say it was my small stepping stone, One would basically take a course in college, but not everyone is well funded for that and I can't buy books for the same said reason(yes I'm somewhat poor, only money for essentials and bills), I'm not trying to get sympathy, just stating my conditions. and Please, something in between the lines of 'Programming for Dummies'(I'm not the brightest crayon in the box), I know this will not be easy, but your help will be most appreciated. I would learn for either Windows and/or Linux/Unix. I use both. Site(s) I know: Cplusplus.org(quite inactive and tutorials are a little for the programming savvy.

• Why hamachi time-outs after 5 minutes or so?

  I installed hamachi and hamachi-gui on my girlfriend's pc and on my girlfriend's netbook. After 5 minutes or so (even if I keep using it during that time) it loses the connection, I mean I have to 'go offline' and then 'go online' again for it to see my ip again. If I don't and I ping my IP, it says 'Host unreachable'. If I connect with my Mac from the office the problem doesn't exist, so I wouldn't say it is a problem of my hamachi (server) installation, I'm tempted to say it is a problem of my girlfriend's connection, since it happens from her home, and we haven't tried yet to connect from another home with her setup.   I don't mind if I use USB flash drive or CD-ROM, but I would prefer USB flash drive. I had a squizz at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions_that_run_from_RAM On my own computer, I would be able to use any of the distros in the list. The largest "RAM required" in the list is 4GB. I would like to be able to use it on any computer, so I suppose 1GB or less would be better. I tried to follow the method described on Distro that I can load into RAM? but the distro listed there, from Israel Remix Team, doesn't seem to be available. Before I start trial-and-error on different distros, does anyone have any recommendations?

  At start up after my dell BIOS load i get the puprle screen and then a black screen and this at the top "[9783] Support for cores revisions 0x17 and 0x18 disabled by module... " sorry i think there's more to it and that's probably crucial but it goes SO fast sometimes and sometimes slower... I just wiped my laptop and installed 13.10 over it and ticked LVM at installation and log in automatically, idk if that would make a difference here... • Can not export JARS in lwjgl!

  I did it before but for some reason it's doing the stupid problem again. I want to export as a regular Jar file, not a folder full of files. I export it like in Oskar Veerhoak. cmd says Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Resource not found: res/F lubberFlap.png at org.newdawn.slick.util.ResourceLoader.getResourceAsStream(ResourceLoa der.java:69) at com_FlubberSpace.MainFS.main(MainFS.java:118) I tested it out with my other project with the same code pretty much. This is how I load my Textures wood = TextureLoader.getTexture("PNG", ResourceLoader.getResourceAsStream("res/wood.png")); of course it works fine in eclipse but not after export. I havn't tried giving the previous game its' own project, I have it in a package. Can someone record how to export properly? I want a jar file that you just double click to start it. I also want it so nobody can extract the files and see my classes and res.

  What I'm looking for is to set up a CMS website with a tag cloud/search system where when you click a tag it shows as a search filter, and you get a new tag cloud which only shows tags from the articles that have the primary tag. This should let the user easily include or exclude tags from the search. Also i would like to let the user filter on publication date by using a slider...
