• Auto re-attach EBS volume on start-up?

  I'm setting up a database server on EC2, and I need to ensure that an EBS volume is automatically attached and is available before the database service starts up. I'm using SMF so I can test whether a particular filesystem is available before starting the db service, so there's no problem from that perspective, however I'm not quite sure how to tell the server to auto-attach the EBS volume during/after boot. What would be the best strategy for this?

• Daemon process exiting when shell closes

  I have a script which starts a daemon process and then sleeps for 20 seconds. If I run the script on SLES11 SP1 or RHEL6 then after the script exits the process is still running. If I run the script on SLES11 SP3 or RHEL6.3 then after the script exits the process is no longer running. The process continues to run for the entire 20 second sleep and is killed when the process exits. The script is run via expect so the script's entire shell exits with the process. Obviously if this wasn't a daemon it was starting I wouldn't be surprised. Also, I suspect the problem isn't the OS version as much as it is the difference in the way we've setup the newer servers (no idea what those differences are though, the older servers were set up years ago). During the 20 seconds the process runs if I do a ps I get the following: root 4699 1 0 15:14 pts/2 00:00:00 sudo -u openmq /opt/PacketPortal/openmq/default/bin/imqbrokerd -bgnd -autorestart -silent -port 7676 -Dimq.service.activelist=admin,ssljms -D openmq 4701 4699 0 15:14 pts/2 00:00:00 /bin/sh /opt/PacketPortal/openmq/default/bin/imqbrokerd -bgnd -autorestart -silent -port 7676 -Dimq.service.activelist=admin,ssljms -Dimq.ssl The fact that the parent process of 4699 is 1 seems to suggest to me that the process has been correctly daemonized. However, after the expect script exits both 4699 and 4701 are killed. What could be causing this? UPDATE I've printed the same output on the servers that work. I wonder why it doesn't do that on the newer servers. UPDATE Here is the section of the script that actually launches OpenMQ.   Title's pretty explanatory. I have an application(Second Life) that isn't compatible with 64-bit windows 7. It says that it is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and 7 but only the 32-bit version of 7. I need to know if it's possible for me to download something to make the application compatible with my computer. I've run troubleshooters and ran it as windows compatible XP service pack 2 and tried again with service pack 3.

• Tomcat app doesn't work with Fingerprint Reader in Windows 7

  I've got a tomcat webapp that uses a fingerprint reader. It works fine under Windows XP and Windows 7 if you double click on tomcat.exe. It doesn't work on Windows 7 if you run tomcat as a service. I imagine that when run as a service the process doesn't have the required permissions to talk to the device. I've tried running it as an administrator and verified that it's doing so with Process Explorer. What else should I check?

Or in particular, I can't get these things: I really can't get the mechanism of action of LDAP and its role. Should I think of Active Directory LDS as of its superset? What're the other roles of AD and why this term is nearly a synonym of term "domain"? What's the role of LDAP in the remote login sequence? Does it store roaming user profiles? Does it store anything else? How it is called (are there any upper-level or lower-level services that use it in the course of NetLogon)? How do I join a domain.   I need to use Kerberos authentication when printing from my OSX machine, however, the machine itself does not have a service account in active directory, so the KDC will not issue a delegation ticket for the local CUPS installation. I think printing could work if the printing framework would directly print to the network CUPS server (or even to the Windows print server), bypassing the local CUPS. Is it possible to setup printing so that it directly accesses the remote print server? (asking for a service ticket for that server would succeed)

• Why doesn't apache restart after configuring SSL?

  I've installed apache2 and then configured it to work with SSL following this and this tutorials, the problem becomes when I try to restart the service, I get the following error: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs the output of netstat -anp | grep 443 just display firefox listening and anything else, how could I solve this and get the service running??

  I'm looking for a tool that is able to (remotely) monitor CPU and Memory in a Windows server but most importantly, which service/process is using it. Or-- is it possible to monitor a specific running service? We got a server that freezes on regular basis and we're trying to find the culprit without using a local debugger. • What's the best scenario for using a wireless router with Comcast Business Class

  Just had Comcast Business Class internet installed (usage details at bottom of post). During the call to order I asked about the hardware they'd be providing and was told it was a docsis 3 modem that I'd have to pay $7.00/month for. Figuring I'd have to buy a router anyway, I decided to get my own modem - a Surfboard SB6121 Docsis 3. I called in to tech support to ask some questions and learned that the modem they would have provided DID have a router built in. It's an SMCD3G-CCR. It's not wireless (we need wireless). The guy explained that it was better to have their hardware here because if there's a problem with our service and we're using our own hardware, chances are they'll blame it on our hardware and do nothing since they don't support it. He explained that I could still hang my own wireless router off their modem/router and if we ever had any service problems, we'd be able to plug directly into their hardware and they'd be able to tell where the problem is and they wouldn't be able to pawn it off onto "customer provided equipment". That all said, a few questions: 1. Am I better off returning my Surfboard modem and getting the Comcast one? If I get a wireless router and plug into one of the ethernet ports of the Comcast device, should I NOT plug anything else into the Comcast device since it would be a different network from anything connecting via the wireless router? Is that correct? Given that I know VERY LITTLE about networking and setting up hardware like this... since I need wireless and will HAVE to get a wireless router to work with this Comcast device, do I need to do anything with the settings of the Comcast device? Do I use security on the Comcast device or the wireless router or both? Any suggestions or anything I need to think about, given this scenario, in order to use a business-type voip service like RingCentral or Jive or Nextiva? Any recommendations on a wireless router for this scenario? We are running 2 PCs (possibly 3-4 in the future) - could be wired for the time being if needed but would prefer wireless; would like to have a networked hard drive and a networked printer; NEED business-type VOIP service asap for 2 phone lines. Would like to hook up some IP cameras at some point (but not the kind that require static IPs since I don't have one nor do I plan to pay Comcast another $15/month for one). I don't have or plan to have any type of web servers or anything like that. Want to use WPA or WPA2 security and take advantage of the NAT feature of the router for additional protection (that's the extent of my networking knowledge).

  I have an HTTP service bound to port 8000 that I want to access from another computing on the network, but I can't seem to connect using the external IP address of the machine (e.g. 192.168.0.105). I've checked the OS X firewall isn't running, so I'm assuming the issue is the service is only bound to the IP address 127.0.0.1, and not the external IP address. What would be the easiest way to temporarily forward external connections on port 8000 to 127.0.0.1:8000?

  I have a couple of questions that are related to security. Correct me if i'm wrong :) If I want to request something (ex: visiting www.google.com): my computer will request that then it will to the ISP then to my ISP proxy server that will take the request and act as a middle man in this situation ask for the site (www.google.com) and retrieve it then the proxy will send it back to me. I know that its being done like that. So, my question is that, in this situation my ISP knows everything and what I did request, and the proxy server is set by default (when I ask for an internet subscription). So, if I use here another proxy (lets assume that is a highly anonymous and my ISP can't detect my IP address from it), would I visit my ISP and then from my ISP it will redirect me to the new proxy server that I provide? Will it know that there is someone using another proxy? Or will it go to another network rather than my ISP? Because I didn't get the view clearly. This question is related to the first one. When I use a VPN, I know that VPN provides for me a tunneling, encryption and much more features that a proxy can't. So my data is travelling securely and my ISP can't know what I'm doing. But my questions are: From where is the tunneling started? Does it start after I visit the ISP network (since they are the one that are responsible for forwarding my data and requests)? If so, then not all my connection is tunneled in this way, there is a part that is not being tunneled. Since, every time I need to do anything I have to go to my ISP and ask to do that. Correct me if I misunderstand this. I know that VPN can let my computer be virtually in another place and access its resources (ex: be like in my office while I'm in my home. This is done via VPN). If I use a VPN service provider so that I can access the internet securely and without being monitored by my ISP. In this case, where is my encrypted data saved? Is it saved in my ISP or in the VPN service provider? If I use a VPN, does anyone on the internet know what I'm doing or who I am? Even the VPN service provider? Can they know me? I think they should know the person that is asking for this VPN service, am I right?

• Why does Kerberos need Ticket Granting Server?

  It's probably something fundamental but I can't find a certain statement. Why can't KDC authenticate then provide the service ticket directly. Is it about security or performance or some other thing? Since users don't log in each time they request a service and assumably they will keep logged in for a long time, AS doesn't seem so busy. Why do they have to be seperated?
