• Suggestions about php editors and file sync programs

  I'm working with ubuntu and lately I decided to learn php. I have everything setup and I'm currently using aptana 3 as my php editor and for file sync. It seems like the process for file sync is too much, it has to check all files just to upload 1 file. So if someone can tell me how to update a file at once without delay, that's welcomed. I find aptana not being what I like. It's a good editor, but I would like to know if there are alternatives out there. Can someone suggest a good php editor for ubuntu?

• Is it good practice to use functions just to centralize common code?

  I run across this problem a lot. For example, I currently write a read function and a write function, and they both check if buf is a NULL pointer and that the mode variable is within certain boundaries. This is code duplication. This can be solved by moving it into its own function. But should I? This will be a pretty anemic function (doesn't do much), rather localized (so not general purpose), and doesn't stand well on its own (can't figure out what you need it for unless you see where it is used). Another option is to use a macro, but I want to talk about functions in this post. So, should you use a function for something like this? What are the pros and cons?

  Background Mapping reference data is one of the common scenarios in BizTalk development and its usually a bit of a pain when you need to manage a lot of reference data whether it be through the BizTalk Cross Referencing features or some kind of custom solution. I have seen many cases where only a couple of the mapping conditions are ever tested. Approach As usual I like to see these things tested in isolation before you start using them in your BizTalk maps so you know your mapping functions are working as expected. This approach can be used for almost all of your reference data type mapping functions where you can take advantage of MSTests data driven tests to test lots of conditions without having to write millions of tests.   I'm using magento 1.4.0 and when I try to get to magento connect and download a plugin the page will say Error: Please check for sufficient write file permissions Your Magento folder does not have sufficient write permissions, which this web based downloader requires. If you wish to proceed downloading Magento packages online, please set all Magento folders to have writable permission for the web server user (example: apache) and press the "Refresh" button to try again. does anyone know how I can fix this problem, thanks Update: the plugin I'm trying to use is MagentoPycho light box so I unpacked the folder into the app/code/local but it still doesn't show in the admin area

• locale: Reset lost settings

  Due to some strange reason, I've lost some of my locale settings. • Redirecting non existing post to homepage; is that good for SEO?

  I am checking my website out on Google Webmasters and I am seeing an astonishing 5000 links that could not be found by Google's Crawlers. That's normal, because my website is built in a manner that users can drop their own things, which also lead to 404 pages. Not a problem at all if I can find a workaround of course... So my question is: what if I made a function or a mod rewrite that will check if the link exists (a post for example) and if not, it will redirect it to the home page. Is this good for SEO? Will Google see this as 'link found'? How do I have to look at this problem?

• How can I reduce the number of spammers registering with my phpBB site?

  I have a site which runs phpBB, on this site I have enabled user authentication through email when registering enabled captcha However I still get spam users every 20 to 30 minutes. Is there anything I can do to prevent this with the ucp.php file? I have already loaded a large list of IP addresses yet there are spam users registering all the time. One thing I can do is I can check the bounce mail to find the username and can pipe bounced mails to a php script and immediately delete that user, but I have not got any bounce back from hotmail or some other email clients. So this way it will catch hold of a certain percent of spam users but there are still a huge amount of users spamming. What else can I do to prevent spammers abusing my phpBB site?

• Water Simulation in LIBGDX [on hold]

  I am doing some R&D for a game and am now tackling the topic of water. The goal Make water that can flow. Aka you can have an origin point that water shoots out from or a downhill slope. Make it so water splashes, so when an object hits the water there is a splash. Aka: Actual physics water sim. The current way I know how to do it I know how to create a shader that makes an object look like its water by making waves. Combined with that you can check to see if an object is colliding and apply an upwards force to simulate buoyancy. What is wrong with that way The water does not flow No splashes Possible solutions Have particles that are fairly large that interact with each other to simulate water Possible drawbacks Performance. Question: Is there a better way to do water or is using particles as described the only way?

• What are the processes of true Quality assurance?

  Having read that Quality Assurance (QA) is focused on processes (while Quality Control (QC) is focused on the product), the books often mentions QA is the verification process - doing peer reviews, inspections etc. I still tend to think these are also QC as they check intermediate products. Elsewhere I have read that QA activity is e.g. choosing the right bugtracker. That sounds better to me in terms of process improvement. The question that close-voting person obviously missed is pretty clear: What are the activities that true QA should perform? I would appreciate the reference as I work on my thesis dealing with all these discrepancies and inconsistencies in the software quality world.

  Moved from Home to work and went to fire up my project and after long pause "The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string" or even More Abscure ProviderIncompatable Exception Now after 20 mins of chasing my tail re different ver of EntityFramework 4.1 vs 4.2...blahblahblah Look inside at the inner exception A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible DOH!!!! Or a clean translation is that it cant find SQL or is offline or not running. SO check the power is on/Service running or as in my case Edit web.config & change back to Work SQL box   Hope you dont have this pain as the default errors @ the moment suck balls in the EntityFramework 4.XX releases   Cheers

  I was wondering the if if-else statements, is like a switch statement that does not have a break statement.To clarify with an example, will the if-else statement go through all the boolean expressions even if comes to one that is true before the final one... I.E., if boolean_expression_1 was true, would it check if boolean_expression_2 is true? If not, why do switch statements need break statements but if-else statements do not? • What's the story with TRIM support?

I have Ubuntu 10.04 with latest updates (including kernel 2.6.32-26). I have an Intel X-25M drive with latest firmware, and it is formatted as ext4. So, does TRIM support run automatically? If not, how do I check if I need to run it, and then how do I run it if necessary?

• How do I use apt-get to update to the latest kernel?

  My current kernel is 3.2.0-26 (my main computer) while on another of my Ubuntu computers, with which I didn't fiddle with unofficial updates, it's 3.2.0-30. Yet the Update manager on my main computer doesn't show available kernel updates. It shows other updates though. I suspect is due to the fact that in the past I installed multiple mainline kernel versions (not recommended versions), up to 3.5* series. What I'm after: Either: Fix automatic kernel updates. Or: Learn about a way to check for the latest official ubuntu kernel version and get it manually (I know how to install kernels from debs) What I have already tried: Uninstalled unused kernels including "the generic one without a number" as per http://askubuntu.com/a/103875/29347 and then also https://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/2011/01/08/ubuntu-cleanup-how-to-remove-all-unused-linux-kernel-headers-images-and-modules/

• Installing 64bit Java 7 - Cannot Execute Binary File

  So I downloaded the latest version of Java from Oracle so I could get a 64bit JVM on Ubuntu Server 10.10. After extracting the file and updating the alternatives I went to check my installation by running java -version and I get this error: -bash: /usr/bin/java: cannot execute binary file I'm at a loss for what to do here. • Touchpad in Sony Vaio E14 - cannot click with a finger and drag with another - Ubuntu 12.04

  I had the following issues with my Sony Vaio E14115's touchpad on Ubuntu 12.04: Right click not working Vertical scrolling not working Then I followed these steps to fix it: Downloaded a patch for Psmouse sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential cd ~/Desktop tar jxvf psmouse-3.2.0-24-generic-pae.tar.bz2 sudo mv psmouse-3.2.0-24-generic-pae /usr/src cd /usr/src sudo chmod -R a+rx psmouse-3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo dkms add -m psmouse -v 3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo dkms build -m psmouse -v 3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo dkms install -m psmouse -v 3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse This fixed me the problems of Rightclick and vertical scrolling. But I still have an issue of not able to click and drag ie Clicking the leftmouse button and dragging with another finger. It doesn't move! Maybe it doesn't detect the 2nd finger. When I check the capabilities of my Synaptics touchpad by using xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"|grep Capabilities I get the following output: Synaptics Capabilities (304): 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 Please help me out.

I had some dynamically added DOM elements and re-applying bindings worked before. It always seemed like a workaround/hack, but now Knockout is telling me that I shouldn’t do it. The quick way to fix this is to use ko.cleanNode($(‘#id’) and this works. A different/possibly better way, as suggested by x0n might be to use templates and Knockout’s template binding (<script type=’text/html’>…</script>).   Thanks again to the StackOverflow community for quickly providing me with the solution. • Remote Desktop Viewer Set-up for 12.10

  How do you set up the Remote Desktop in 12.10? I've scanned the available answers here and didn't find anything that answers the question considering the 12.10 interface. Specifically, advice says to check the "Allow Others to Control Your Desktop" and an IP will pop up (10.04 I believe). But when checking this in Quezal no IP shows. So how would I connect to my desktop from somewhere other than the local network, like say a coffee house? I also see this Remmina client program but have no idea if I need to use that as well. Can someone give me a step-by-step or point me to one that I haven't found yet? Thanks.

• TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 moves and some issues

  There have been many things going on this year around TFS.  Most of them had to do with migrations (I don’t call them upgrades for the most part since it involved new hardware and such).  Many were implementations using the Conchango SfTS template (now EMC). But there were others that were CMMI or Agile 4.0. Everything would move just fine, no issues.  That was until you attempted to run Test Case Management or run the last configuration steps for Lab Management. There is an error that states a project is not ready to run or integrate with Test or Lab Management.  And while there was some documentation on how to adjust and update the Agile WITs to work with it, there was still some disconnect to making it work with CMMI.
