• Why is my Ubuntu 10.10 CD not booting?

  I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and burned the ISO but it will not boot. I discarded problems with the ISO, as I've downloaded from the official website with no errors, and burned it with no errors. I discarded problems with the burning, as looks like it was recorded with no errors here and later in another computer. I discarded problems with my DVD reader as other cds boots fine. I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.10, I know I can upgrade via internet, but I have this same problem with my Windows XP cd, so I really would like to discover what's going on here.. My Ubuntu 9.10 cd boots just right, but the new one not. What else can be? Or what more precise tests can I make to discover where's the problem? --More info What happens when I try to boot with the Ubuntu 10.10 cd is that it behavior like there's no bootable cd in the drive. It just don't find the boot on the cd, and start the HD system. My notebook is an Amazon PC Intel Celeron 1.5 with 2Gb memory, a DVD-RW driver, HD samsung with 260GB.

• How to create or recover Windows Bootloader after deleting Ubuntu boot drive

  I have a computer that dual-boots (or tri-boots) Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows 7, and Ubuntu 12.04. Grub boots between Windows 8 and Ubuntu; for which I use primarily. Recently, I decided to remove Ubuntu, as I hardly used it. I deleted the Ubuntu partition accidentally before replacing the Grub bootloader. Now, whenever I want to boot the machine, it gives me the "grub-rescue" prompt -- I am unable to boot into either Windows (8 nor 7), nor Ubuntu (except via USB, of course). I do not have any Windows 7/8 recovery media, so that isn't an option. Please note that after I deleted the Ubuntu partition, I put the PC into hibernate, and then turned it on. This means the C:\ [Windows 8] drive cannot be mounted. I don't know if that is bad, but it definitely doesn't make things better. I am currently booting Ubuntu via USB, in an effort to restore the Windows bootloader. I have looked into using boot-repair to solve the problem using the instructions here, although after attempting to apply the changes, it gave the error: "Please install the [mbr] packages. Then try again." I don't know why I'm getting this error; is there a way to install the 'mbr packages?' I honestly don't know what exactly they are, nor how to install them. Are there any other options I have not yet exhausted to be able to boot back into Windows, in the case that there is a better way? I want to set the bootloader to boot into Windows 8, but booting into either Windows 7 or 8 is fine (I can use EasyBCD from there). Is there a simple solution to this? I've checked BIOS, and I haven't been able to find a way to boot into Windows.

• xubuntu install on p4

  Hello i am thinking of installing xubuntu on a dell gx260 pentium 4 pc with: 1.8GHz processor 64mb integrated video card(had other but it died on me) 1GB of RAM Ive installed lubuntu but im not enjoying it since i can not make shortcuts of partitions or folders on desktop for faster usability(i dont want them on my bar, want them on desktop) also the buggs i seen on it made me reconsider of using lubuntu:mplayer not working, no video was working,chromium outdated etc and i dont want to stay all day to find solutions over the internet. And seen on internet from xubuntu that theyve had shortcuts for theyre partitions on desktop, and is more attractive.(can some1 tell me if with xubuntu u can make shortcuts on desktop, i mean the shortcuts remain after reboot) 1 more thing to add:at installing lubuntu when it asked me where to install it only showed me the entire hard drive(i have 3 partitions on it) and made me select the size of the lubuntu partition from 1 that the installer wanted.(from local disk D: from windows xp view),need to mention that i have windows xp on the machine which is on local C:, kept my downloads on local D:, and other stuff on E:. I want an ubuntu distro which would work fine especially for internet purpose. Can someone lend me a hand on this?

• Music Manager thst can properly synch song ratings with Android

  I'm moving from Windows 7 to Ubuntu, and so far the experience has been a really good one :) However, there is something that I've used to do with Windows 7 that I can't find how to do in Ubuntu: From my Windows music manager programs (either MediaMonkey or Windows Media Player) I could set song ratings in a way that the ratings set from either program could be also read from the other one. Additionally, song ratings were visible and updated in my iPod Touch when I synch'ed my music (either manually or using iTunes). To sum up, it seems that MediaMonkey, WMP, and the iPod device use standard mp3 metadata tag for ratings. Now, using Ubuntu 12.04, and now with an Android device: Rhythmbox can't see the song rates, despite those ratings can be seen by MediaMonkey and MS Music Player when I boot with Win7. Is this an issue I can fix with some setting? Is there any program I can use to accomplish this? What do you recommend to sync my music with Android (4.0, Galaxy s2), also keeping the song ratings information updated between Android and my PC? Thanks!!

• Ubuntu 13.10 - Black screen after login session

  Yesterday, the system asked me if I wanted to upgrade to 13.10 from 13.04. Since that was the first time for me, I decided to proceed and ran the installation without worrying about it. After the system completed the upgrade, my PC was rebooted and the new version of Ubuntu signalled that the desktop would have run in low graphigs mode due to a graphical driver problem. I couldn't manage to fix the issue, so I continued with the low graphics mode... but nothing showed up. I wasn't even able to access one of the TTYs. So I ended up rebooting the system and accessing the recovery mode. I uninstalled all my ATI graphics drivers along with xorg-server and fglrx. After rebooting, I was able to access the login session of Ubuntu, but after confirming my credentials, the desktop wouldn't show up, but instead a black screen appeared with the following message: System program problem detected I couldn't figure out the problem and tried to restore/re-install all the graphics elements I knew. but nothing worked. The screen still remains black and won't show the icons nor the Unity bar. What would you advise me to do? Should I try launching a fresh install of the OS from the live CD? Thank you.

• WiFi can't reconnect after suspend/hibernate on Ubuntu 12.04.1

  I've had this problem since Ubuntu 11.10 (my first install) but I was able to get around this issue with this answer. When I updated to Ubuntu 12.04 I encrypted the home folder, so I wasn't able to suspend or hibernate anymore (disappointing :l). Because of this and another issue I had1, I chose to reinstall. Sometime after I reinstalled, I was reminded about reconnection issue because it wasn't working after I suspended. I tried to use the same fix as before but I couldn't get it to work. I've also tried a couple other different fixes I found around the web but they didn't work. Since I'm new to linux, I'm gonna have a tough time figuring this out by myself. So does anyone know how, or what I need to figure out how, to fix this? • Multiple instances of Intellitrace.exe process

  Not so long ago I was confronted with a very bizarre problem… I was using visual studio 2010 and whenever I opened up the Test Impact view I would suddenly see my pc perf go down drastically…  Investigating this problem, I found out that hundreds of “Intellitrace.exe” processes had been started on my system and I could not close them as they would re-start as soon as I would close one.  That was very weird.  So I knew it had something to do with the Test Impact but how can this feature and Intellitrace.exe going crazy be related?  After a bit of thinking I remembered that a teammate (Etienne Tremblay, ALM MVP) had told me once that he had seen this issue before just after installing a MOCKING FRAMEWORK that uses the .NET Profiler API…  Apparently there’s a conflict between the test impact features of Visual Studio and some mocking products using the .NET profiler API…  Maybe because VS 2010 also uses this feature for Test Impact purposes, I don’t know… Anyways, here’s the fix…  Go to your VS 2010 and click the “Test” menu.  Then go to the “Edit Test Settings” and choose EACH test setting file applying the following actions (normally 2 files being “Local” and TraceAndTestImpact”: -          Select the Data And Diagnostic option on the left -          Make sure that the ASP.NET Client Proxy for Intellitrace and Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Make sure that the Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Save and close   Edit Test Settings   Problem solved…  For me having to choose between the “Test Impact” features and the “Mocking Framework” was a no brainer, bye bye test impact…  I did not investigate much on this subject but I feel there might be a way to have them both working by enabling one after the other in a precise sequence…  Feel free to leave a comment if you know how to make them both work at the same time!   Hope this helps someone out there !

• Automate #include refactoring in C++ [on hold]

  I have a big project with hundreds of files. And as it often happens to C++ projects, #include directives are in messed up. I want to refactor them to increase clarity, decrease compilation time and simplify analysis. For each .h file I want to make sure that: It have #include directives only for types it is using But it have only forward declarations of types that are used as T* or T& For each .cpp file I want to make sure that: It have #include directives only for types it is using and not already included by another headers (no indirect includes when possible) I'm looking for a tool which will help me to automate this refactoring. For now I only know of tools that helps to remove redundant includes, they are many: PC-lint include-what-you-use cppclean ProFactor IncludeManager But I know of no tools to help me to move necessary includes in .h files or replace includes with forward declarations. • Booting Ubuntu 12.04 in Unity the Windows Theme & Icon Theme reversed back to and always locked to Ubuntu default

  I did set up last year Faience-Ocre as my Icon Theme and Adwaita Cupertino L Unity as my Windows Theme (the GTK+ thme was unchanged to Adwaita (default)). It has worked perfectly well until 3 days ago when starting my PC I saw the Ubuntu default showing up for Windows & Icon Theme. I noticed that at start-up the disk access LED is not lit up continuously as before but at moment stops reading for a few seconds (up to 15 s) then complete the disk reading process. When all was working well this LED would lit up continuously. Another thing is that GNOME applications are as well not working well as previously Nautilus and Gedit now don't use the global menu in the system bar but a local window menu. Nautilus - Nemo before the incident Nautilus - Nemo now ... I did open dconf to check the desktop settings in org-gnome-desktop-wm-preferences and everything is looking good. When I change the settings in the app Advanced Settings in the Theme folder I see the respective value changing in dconf. However, there is no change on my desktop. It looks like it's crippled and GNOME related. [Update 1]: I have the same defect as referenced @ ubuntu theme suddenly changed to default and it's not coming back! instead of my GTK theme I get a classic, Windows-95-like grayish theme ... However one of the solution mentionned: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/06/fix-ubuntu-linux-mint-theme-changing-to.html is not working at all, even for 20 s up to 60 s delay.

• "Bootmgr is missing...." Upon reboot [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Install/running ubuntu on extarnal HDD with a windows laptop? Ill take you through the steps I did. Sorry if this question has already been resolved, I'm new to Ubuntu and forums in general. I have 2 internal HDDs in my computer, both with Win7. One HDD is my mothers, the other is mine. I did this because she didn't want my games on her computer, and my PCs motherboard took a crap on me, so I set up a dual boot. I also have an external HDD. This is what I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on. I formatted the drive by right clicking it, then selecting "Format". It is now in NTSF format. I downloaded the Windows installer, ran it, and selected "I:/" (my externl hdd) as the install location. The download and installation ran smoothly, and it gave me the reboot prompt. I selected "Reboot now" and my PC rebooted. I was then interrupted by the "Bootmgr is missing. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL TO REBOOT" message. NOTE: I would like to use my HDD for a FULL Ubuntu installation, not the Live (i think thats what its called). I want all my files and settings from Ubuntu saved to the External drive as if it was my only drive. If you need more information just ask. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• I know fundamental programming. But how do I get started in game development now?

  I'm a 20 year old programming student. I know fundamental programming in BASIC, C, C++ and JAVA. What I wanted to ask is, where do I go from here? Are there any books that the community can mention that will help me develop a game or at least learn game development? I've had a lot of ideas and really want to make some sort of prototype to see if I'm suited for the industry. I really don't mind learning any new languages but I need to know what I should begin with. A good book that will help with a little more understanding as I go up will be very helpful. Maybe a tutorial to develop some basic 2D games like a side-scroller, snake or pocket tanks in an easy to understand SDK? I know that to get some credit under your belt, you need to be able to make a few games on your own. Also, what platform should I start on? The PC, iOS or Android (as an introduction) for now. I don't want to get into high level game design just yet. Just something a bit basic to help out in future development. Anything pointing me in the right direction will be really really helpful. Edit: Also, I want to say that I'm looking towards this from a game designer's point of view more than a game programmer. I want suggestions on any SDKs or easy to use programs I can use to understand game design. Then delve deeper into the programming after that. • Logging library for (c++) games

  I know a lot of logging libraries but didn't test a lot of them. (GoogleLog, Pantheios, the coming boost::log library...) In games, especially in remote multiplayer and multithreaded games, logging is vital to debugging, even if you remove all logs in the end. Let's say I'm making a PC game (not console) that needs logs (multiplayer and multithreaded and/or multiprocess) and I have good reasons for looking for a library for logging (like, I don't have time or I'm not confident in my ability to write one correctly for my case). Assuming that I need : performance ease of use (allow streaming or formating or something like that) reliable (don't leak or crash!) cross-platform (at least Windows, MacOSX, Linux/Ubuntu) Wich logging library would you recommand? Currently, I think that boost::log is the most flexible one (you can even log to remotely!), but have not good performance. Pantheios is often cited but I don't have comparison points on performance and usage. I've used my own lib for a long time but I know it don't manage multithreading so it's a big problem, even if it's fast enough. Google Log seems interesting, I just need to test it but if you already have compared those libs and more, your advice might be of good use. Games are often performance demanding while complex to debug so it would be good to know logging libraries that, in our specific case, have clear advantages.

  I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 over network unattended. I installed a DHCP server (Dnsmasq), a TFTP server (tftpd-hpa), I got the netboot.tar.gz archive with the pxelinux.0 file, the pxelinux.cfg directory, the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image and I put a preseed file into my web server. Dnsmasq, tftpd-hpa, pxelinux and Apache are all on the same machine. The PCs MB doesn’t support PXE, so I use iPXE and boot it from a CD. The PC gets an IP from the DHCP, then iPXE loads #pxelinux.cfg/default, which I edited like this: timeout 5 prompt 0 default install label install kernel ubuntu-installer/i386/linux append vga=normal locale=en_GB setup/layoutcode=sl_SI console-setup/layoutcode=sl_SI netcfg/choose_interface=auto initrd=ubuntu-installer/i386/initrd.gz netcfg/get_hostname=ubuntux preseed/url=#http://192.168.10.10/ins/preseed.cfg Then it loads the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image. Then I got a question: Detect keyboard layout? I desided to bother with this later. The file may be corrupt. I created the file myself and copied the d-I commands into it. I also tried to get the preseed.cfg over a web browser and it works fine. So why is the installer failing?

But, after 15 months looking for work, I am still with out a JOB. What is wrong here or with me? Let’s see, hard worker (check), self motivated to do well on a Job (Check), Certified CompTIA A+, Security+  and Network+ Technician (Check), 20 + years experience in “IT” (CHECK), in good health, in 20 years of work only 15 days off due to health issues (Check), 18 years experience as technical Help Desk support (Check), can still work better than younger personal (Check), Strong trouble shooting skills for software, computer hard ware and circuit issues (Check) and Multiple software languages (Hey I have done some programming) Check. Hmm I don’t see any problem with me (of course I could have missed something, please let me know if you see what I am missing).    Now as to what have I been up to since I last blogged. The same things of course, Job hunting, job hunting and study.   I have set up sim of my home LAN and will be adding a wireless print server to the sim and in real life, soon.  I was able to pull up and copy the examples of Cisco router commands that I had on my old lap top, to my newer PC. Every time I used a new command while working the NOC on my last job.   I would cut and past a copy of the command on the router (and what it did) I was working on.  Along with notes on the problem and commands use for same router. I used these to make documentation for on how to handle these types of issues, for the other Operation Techs. My old notes are helping me in studying for the CCENT test.    As to Love Dare, I think it will take more like 40 weeks, than the 40 days of the book. Yes I am making progress, slow but, it is progress. I will have more on that in my next blog.

• How can a usb be detected but not show up anywhere?

  I started the morning by trying to create a bootable usb using a 2gb stick and the startup disk creator. It seemed to run through the whole process just fine until it got to a screen that read something like "Creating memory partion" and which sat on 100% for about 45 minutes before I hit cancel and removed the usb stick. Now the usb stick is not being detected as storage or...anything (even on my windows pc) though it does show up in the syslog. Allow me to demonstrate. • Oracle Java Olympics Between Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan

  Last month, 151 universities in 11 locations (Saint-Petersburg, Moscow, Donetsk, Tomsk, Odessa, Rostov-on-Don, Ekaterinburg, Khabarovsk, Almaty, Kiev, and Samara) competed in the second round of the Oracle Java Olympics. For two weeks in February, the best university students from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan were invited to compete with each other and prove just how good they are in Java programming.  A team of engineers from Oracle Development center in Saint-Petersburg prepared the set of problems to solve during the competition. To win, participants needed to show deep knowledge of Java technologies from Classloader and NIO to Reflection and JavaDB. Students in each location had a PC with Oracle JDK 1.7u2 and Netbeans 7.1.  As a testing system, the organizers used the open source software Ejudge (with several tweaks specifically for the competition).  Participants submitted their solutions to the remote server where they were tested by prepared test harnesses. All results were posted in real-time. "I followed the competition coming in from the many sites, and it was a really exciting experience, like a horse race or football game!" exclaimed Java Evangelist Alexander Belokrylov. Congratulations to everyone who competed! The Olympic finals will on April 4th.

• What You Said: Where Do You Find Your Next Game?

  Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite places and tricks for finding new video games to play. It turns out the least of your problems was finding new games! From the comments it became apparent How-To Geek readers had absolutely no problem finding new games to add to their gaming stable. Buzz writes: I have quite an elaborate procedure in finding my next game:For free games i simply follow the feeds on a few websites like Freegamer, LinuxGames, HappyPenguin and Penguspy. Every now and them i browse Wikipedia articles on free/FOSS games. For commercial games the procedure depends on what i enjoyed the most in that game:- If i enjoyed the story or the general feel: i usually start with a game i like and look for sequels, prequels, mods or spinoffs. I even go out on a limb and give other platforms (than a PC) a try, even if it usually means emulation. If you really enjoy a game series/saga it’s usually worth the effort.- If i enjoy the producer/gaming company then i seek out more of their games.- If i enjoy the technical achievements that went into making the game or if i am concerned for the system requirements of my gear i try to play games that are built on the same engine(s) as one of the games i ran smooth and enjoyed.- If i feel like playing a particular genre i usually start with a title i enjoyed and look for alternatives or similar games- You can always try searching for Game of The Year winners for a particular time period or other similar accomplishments.
