• How do I best remove the unicode characters that XHTML regards as non-valid using php?

  I run a forum designed to support an international mathematics group. I've recently switched it to unicode for better support of international characters. In debugging this conversion, I've discovered that not all unicode characters are considered as valid XHTML (the relevant website appears to be http://www.w3.org/TR/unicode-xml/). One of the steps that the forum software goes through before presenting the posts to the browser is an XHTML validation/sanitisation step. It seems a reasonable idea that at that stage it should remove any unicode characters that XHTML doesn't like. So my question is: Is there a standard (or best) way of doing this in PHP? (The forum is written in PHP, by the way.) I guess that the failsafe would be a simple str_replace (if that's also the best, do I need to do anything extra to make sure it works properly with unicode?) but that would involve me having to go through the XHTML DTD (or the above-referenced W3 page) carefully to figure out what characters to list in the search part of str_replace, so if this is the best way, has someone already done that so that I can steal, err, copy, it? (Incidentally, the character that caused the problem was U+000C, the 'formfeed', which (according to the W3 page) is valid HTML but invalid XHTML!)

• nhibernate not taking mappings from assembly

  Hi I'm using fnh and castle nhib facility.   This might be an age old problem and I am sure everyone has their own ways. Suppose I have some properties defined such as secret.user.id=user secret.password=password website.url=http://stackoverflow.com Suppose I have 100 different classes and places where I need to use these properties. Which one is good (1) I create a Util class that will load all properties and serve them using a key constant Such as : Util is a singleton that loads all properties and keeps up on getInstance() call. Util myUtil = Util.getInstance(); String user = myUtil.getConfigByKey(Constants.SECRET_USER_ID); String password = myUtil.getConfigByKey(Constants.SECRET_PASSWORD); .. //getConfigByKey() - inturns invokes properties.get(..) doSomething(user, password) So wherever I need these properties, I can do steps above. (2) I create a meaningful Class to represent these properties; say, ApplicationConfig and provide getters to get specific properties. So above code may look like: ApplicationConfig config = ApplicationConfig.getInstance(); doSomething(config.getSecretUserId(), config.getPassword()); //ApplicationConfig would have instance variables that are initialized during // getInstance() after loading from properties file. Note: The properties file as such will have only minor changes in the future. My personal choice is (2) - let me hear some comments?

I simple steps i will try to explain my problem. 1) I am working on tinyOS . its open source OS , used for wireless sensor networks. It provides java libraries to work on communication (PC to sensor) 2) I am working on windows xp environment through cigwin. 3) I am developing an application . THis application requires one java interface called "Serial Forwarder" , which is readily available in libraries provided. Previously i used to start this interface manually (by entering command *"java net.tinyos.sf.SerialForwarder ")*and then my application which uses this interface. But now i want to make my application independent . User need know about this background cygwin commands . 4) So in my java application i used "Runtime.getRuntime().exec( "java net.tinyos.sf.SerialForwarder)" . 5) This i neither giving any error nor starting the interface. Am I going on right way ? When i am using runtime execute command , how can i make sure that this command is called through cigwin interface ? Also .. if i want to write .bat file .. i which i can give commands which will be executed .. how can i make sure that those commands are given through cigwin .. and not through cmd.exe .. Please help . me .

• Exponential regression : p-value and F significance

  I am new to statistics. I have a set of independent data and dependent data (X,Y), where I would like to do an exponential regression to obtain its p-value and significant F (already obtained R2 and also the coefficients through mathematical calculation). What is the natural evolution from the (X,Y) data to mathematically calculate those variables. Spent a week on the internet to study this but unable to find the right answer. Often an exponential data, y=be^(mx) will be converted first to a linear data, ln y = mx + ln b . Then a linear regression will done on the converted data, obtaining its p-value etc. Assume we use a statistical tool such as Excel's Analysis ToolPak: Data Analysis : Regression, it will produce a result such as below, I believe the p-value and Significant F value is representing the converted linear data and not the original exponential data. Questions: What is the approach/steps used by Excel to get the p-value and Significant F value for the converted linear data as shown in the statistic output in the image above? It is not clear in their help page or website. Can the p-value and Significant F could be mathematically calculated for exponential regression without using a statistical tool? Can you assist to point me to the right link if this has been answered before.

  I'm trying to install gevent on a fresh EC2 CentOS 5.3 64-bit system. • Merging k sorted linked lists - analysis

  Hi! I am thinking about different solutions for one problem. Assume we have K sorted linked lists and we are merging them into one. All these lists together have N elements. The well known solution is to use priority queue and pop / push first elements from every lists and I can understand why it takes O(N log K) time. But let's take a look at another approach. Suppose we have some MERGE_LISTS(LIST1, LIST2) procedure, that merges two sorted lists and it would take O(T1 + T2) time, where T1 and T2 stand for LIST1 and LIST2 sizes. What we do now generally means pairing these lists and merging them pair-by-pair (if the number is odd, last list, for example, could be ignored at first steps). This generally means we have to make the following "tree" of merge operations: N1, N2, N3... stand for LIST1, LIST2, LIST3 sizes O(N1 + N2) + O(N3 + N4) + O(N5 + N6) + ... O(N1 + N2 + N3 + N4) + O(N5 + N6 + N7 + N8) + ... O(N1 + N2 + N3 + N4 + .... + NK) It looks obvious that there will be log(K) of these rows, each of them implementing O(N) operations, so time for MERGE(LIST1, LIST2, ... , LISTK) operation would actually equal O(N log K). My friend told me (two days ago) it would take O(K N) time. So, the question is - did I f%ck up somewhere or is he actually wrong about this? And if I am right, why doesn't this 'divide&conquer' approach can't be used instead of priority queue approach?

I've looked through the permissions that I can give the app in the AndroidManifest.xml file, but I can't see one for letting it flash the light or make sounds.

• Full Text Index type column is empty

  I am trying to create an index on a VarBinary(max) field in my SQL Server 2008 database. The steps I am taking are as follows: Table: dbo.Records Right click on table and select "Full Text Index" Then select "Define Index..." I choose the primary key which is the PK of my table (field name Id, type UniqueIndentifier). I then get the screen with the options Available Columns, Language for Word Breaker and Type Column I select my VarBinary(max) field called Chart as the Available Column by ticking the box. I select "English" as the Language for Word Breaker field. Then... I try to select the Type Column but there are no entries in here. I cannot proceed by clicking "Next" until this column is populated. Why are there no entries in this column for selection and what should be in there? Note 1: The VarBinary(max) field is linked to a file group if that makes any difference. Note 2: Also noticed that in the table designer I cannot set the full text option on that same field to "Yes" - its permanently stuck on "No". Thanks.

I don't know the detailed steps of this. What should I do to create the culture and remove the compilation error? • Why are mercurial subrepos behaving as unversioned files in eclipse AND torotoiseHG

  I am trying to use the subrepo feature of mercurial, using the mercurial eclipse plugin\tortoiseHG. These are the steps I took: Created an empty dir /root cloned all repos that I want to be subrepos inside this folder (/root/sub1, /root/sub2) Created and added the .hgsub file in the root repo /root/.hgsub and put all the mappings of the sub repos in it using tortoiseHG, right clicked on /root and selected create repository here again with tortoise, selected all the files inside /root and added them to to the root repo commited the root repo pushed the local root repo into an empty repo I have set up on kiln Then, I pulled the root repo in eclipse, using import-mercurial. Now I see that all the subrepos appear as though they are unversioned (no "orange cylinder" icon next to their corresponding folders in the eclipse file explorer). Furthermore, when I right click on one of the subrepos, I don't get all the hg commands in the "team" menu as I usually get, with root projects - no "pull", "push" etc. Also, when I made a change to a file in a subrepo, and then "committed" the root project, it told me there were no changes found. I see the same behavior also in tortoiseHG - When I am browsing files under /root, the files belonging directly to the root repo have an small icon (a V sign) on them marking they are version controlled, while the subrepos' folders aren't marked as such. Am I doing something wrong, or is it a bug?

• Elegant Algorithm for Parsing Data Stream Into Record

  I am interfacing with a hardware device that streams data to my app over Wifi. The data is streaming in just fine. The data contains a character header (DATA:) that indicates a new record has begun. The issues is that the data I receive doesn't necessarily fall on the header boundary, so I have to capture the data until what I've captured contains the header. Then, everything that precedes the header goes into the previous record and everything that comes after it goes into a new record. I have this working, but wondered if anyone has done this before and has a good computer-sciencey way to solve the problem. Here's what I do: Convert the NSData of the current read to an NSString Append the NSString to a placeholder string Check placeholder string for the header (DATA:). If the header is not there, just wait for the next read. If the header exists, append whatever precedes it to a previous record placeholder and hand that placeholder off to an array as a complete record that I can further parse into fields. Take whatever shows up after the header and place it in the record placeholder so that it can be appended to in the next read. Repeat steps 3 - 5. Let me know if you see any flaws with this or have a suggestion for a better way. Seems there should be some design pattern for this, but I can't think of one. Thanks.

• Xcode - duplicate Target - new Target fails to build

  Hi all, using Xcode 3.2.5 on 10.6.6 (10J521) I have an Xcode project containing 1 Target: "MyApp". It builds and runs successfully. As well as source and resource files, the Target contains a "Copy Files" build phase which copies "Sparkle.framework" in. The framework is in the same directory as the project. I want to duplicate this Target. Steps taken: Did "Clean all Targets". Right-clicked on the "MyApp" Target within Xcode, and then chose "Duplicate". Renamed the duplicated target to "MyAppTarget2". Selected "MyAppTarget2" as the Active Target from the popup menu in the top-left. Did "Build". The problem: error: Sparkle/Sparkle.h: No such file or directory This is puzzling! Each Build step appears to have been replicated in the duplicated Target, including the "Copy Files" phase. The Sparkle.framework exists at the path indicated by [Get Info on the Copy Phase item]. If I right-click on the Sparkle.framework file within the "Copy Files" build phase of the duplicated Target, and select "Reveal in Finder", then the correct Sparkle.framework file is shown. The required file exists at Sparkle.framework/Headers/Sparkle.h If I switch back to the original "MyApp" target, it builds and runs successfully. Am I doing something obviously wrong here? Thanks.

• AS3 - Can't access properties or methods of a MC child that has been added in script

  Hi All - I am still a bit of a beginner at AS3, so bear with me, please. I have created a loop to instantiate tiles on a board. In the following example, "Gametiles" is an array containing objects of class "Tile" which is a class that extends MovieClip. "Game" is a MC that I added to the stage in the flash developing environment. for(var i:uint=0;i < Gametiles.length;i++){ var pulledTile = Gametiles[i]; var tilename:String = "I_Tile_" + pulledTile.grid_y + "_" + pulledTile.grid_x; var createdTile = new InteractiveTile(); pulledTile.addAnims(createdTile); Game.addChildAt(pulledTile, 0); Game.getChildAt(0).name = tilename; } The above code works - but with a tricky problem. If I did something like the following: trace(Game.I_Tile_1_3.x); I get "TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties." However, I am able to access theses children in the following manner: var testing = Game.getChildByName("I_Tile_1_3") trace(testing.x); This method is a bit cumbersome though. I really don't want to have to create a var and call getChildByName every time I want to interact with these properties or methods. How can I set up these children so that I can access them directly without the extra steps?

• Get to know what HTML-button is clicked with PHP, no Name of value available

  I have a wizard with 4 steps and in one of the steps, you can add items. By default, there are 3 time 5 empty input-fields listed. When you click a button, there have to be added some more. The 3 times 5 fields are added by a loop. How can I determine where I have to add some fields (in the first 5 field of the second or the third). I can't use another name for every button, because sometimes there can be more then 3 groups of 5 fields. In my code (PHP), I use the name of the button to know what happened in the form, so the name can't be different for the button in every group ... Further, the whole step is 1 form, so the post can't go to another script ... The value of the button has to be the same for every group. I've been thinking on possible solutions and these came up: On click a javascript adds a value to the post (in a hidden field?) But is this posted with the form? Could it be possible to get the ID of the clicked button? This might be different :-) I need a refresh after the click, so pure javascript isn't a solution either ... It is a very specific question, but I hope someone can give me some direction. • Synchronizing files between Linux servers, through FTP

  I have the following configuration of servers: 1 central linux server, a VPS 8 satellite linux servers, "crappy shared hostings" I have a bunch of files that I need to have in all servers. Right now i'm copying them everywhere manually, but I want to be able to copy them to the central server, and then have a scheduled process that runs every now and then and synchronizes them (only outwardly, no need to try to find "new" files in the satellite servers). There are a couple of catches though: I can't have any custom software in the satellite servers, or do strange command line things that'll auto connect to them and send the files directly. I know this is the way these kinds of things are normally done, but the satellite servers are crappy shared hosting ones where I have absolutely no control over anything. I need to send the files over FTP I also need to have, in my central server, a list of the files that are available in each of the satellite servers, to make sure they are ready before I send traffic to them. If I were to do this manually, the steps would be: get the list of files in a satellite server compare to my own, and send the files that are missing get the list of files again, and store it in my central database. I'd like to know what tools are out there that can alleviate as much of this as possible, first the syncing, and then the "getting the list of files available in the other server". I'm going to be doing everything from PHP, not sure if there are good tools to "use FTP from PHP", which i'm pretty sure i'll have to do for step 3 at least. Thanks in advance for any ideas! Daniel

  Hi, I am planning to use libcurl in my project. I had downloaded the library source,built and integrated it in a small POC application. I am able to build and run the application without any issues with the generated libcurl.dll and libcurl_imp.lib files. Now when I integrate the same library in my project I am getting linker errors. 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_setopt 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_perform 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_cleanup 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_global_init 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_init I have researched and tried all manners of workarounds like adding CURL_STATICLIB definitions , additional libraries , changing to /MT even copying the libs to the release directory but nothing seems to work. As far as I can see the only difference between approach #1 and #2 in my steps are #1 is an console application using the libcurl.dll while in my main project this is another dll which is trying to link to libcurl.dll.. Would that necessitate any change in approach? Can I use the same generated multi threaded DLL /MD file for both(Tried /MT also with no success)? Any other ideas? • System.Design cannot be referenced in Class Library?

  Hi all, I have a very strange problem that I cannot fix and don't know what's going on... I am using VS 2010 Premium and .NET 4.0. Here are my steps to simulate the problem. Step 1. Create a new VB class library project named "MyClassLib" Step 2. Create a new class named "MyTestingClass". Public Class MyTestingClass Inherits System.ComponentModel.Design.CollectionEditor Public Sub New() MyBase.New(GetType(List(Of String))) End Sub End Class Step 3. Add two .net reference. "System.Design" and "System.Drawing". Step 4. Create a new VB console application named "MyClassExe" Step 5. Add "MyClassLib" reference to "MyClassExe". Step 6. Open Module1.vb in "MyClassExe" project Step 7. In the Main method, type Dim a = New MyClassLib.MyTestingClass() Step 8. Try to compile "MyClassLib". It doesn't have problem. Step 9. Try to compile "MyClassExe". It cannot compile because the WHOLE MyClassLib cannot be found!!! I have no idea what's going on? Moreover, the same case happens in C#. Does anyone know what's the problem with "System.Design"? Thank!!!

• TeamCity + HG. Only pull (push?) passing builds

  Feels like with the popularity of continuous integration this one should be a piece of cake but I am stumped. I am setting up TeamCity with HG. I want to be able to push changesets up to a repository that TeamCity watches and runs builds on changes. That's easy. Next, if a build passes, I want that changeset to be pulled into a "clean" repository... one that contains only passing changesets. Should be easy but... TeamCity 6 supports multiple build steps and if any step fails, the rest don't run. My thought was to put a build step at the end that does a pull (or optionally a push?) to get the passing changeset into the clean repository. I am trying to use PsExec to run hg on the box with the repositories. If I try to run just a plain 'hg pull' it can't find the hg.exe even though it is set in the path and I have used the -w flag. I have tried putting a .bat file in the clean repository that takes a revision parameter and it works fine... locally. When I try to run the .bat file remotely (using PsExec) it runs everything fine but it tries to run it on the build agent. Even if I set the -w argument it runs the .bat file there but tries to run the contents on the build agent box. Am I just WAY off in my approach? Seems like this is a pretty obvious thing to do so either my Google skills are waning or no one thinks this is worthy of writing about. Either way, I am stuck in SVN land trying to get out so I would appreciate some help!

• Creating LINQ to SQL Data Models' Data Contexts with ASP.NET MVC

  I'm just getting started with ASP.NET MVC, mostly by reading ScottGu's tutorial. To create my database connections, I followed the steps he outlined, which were to create a LINQ-to-SQL dbml model, add in the database tables through the Server Explorer, and finally to create a DataContext class. That last part is the part I'm stuck on. In this class, I'm trying to create methods that work around the exposed data. Following the example in the tutorial, I created this: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; namespace MySite.Models { public partial class MyDataContext { public List<Post> GetPosts() { return Posts.ToList(); } public Post GetPostById(int id) { return Posts.Single(p => p.ID == id); } } } As you can see, I'm trying to use my Post data table. However, it doesn't recognize the "Posts" part of my code. What am I doing wrong? I have a feeling that my problem is related to my not adding the data tables correctly, but I'm not sure.
