  • What's the best way to normalize scores for ranking things?

    hi all, I'm curious how to do normalizing of numbers for a ranking algorithm let's say I want to rank a link based on importance and I have two columns to work with so a table would look like url | comments | views now I want to rank comments higher than views so I would first think to do comments*3 or something to weight it, however if there is a large view number like 40,000 and only 4 comments then the comments weight gets dropped out. So I'm thinking I have to normalize those scores down to a more equal playing field before I can weight them. Any ideas or pointers to how that's usually done? thanks

    Suppose each Person has a collection of favorite Books. So I have a table for: Person Book The association between Person and Book (joint table for MxN) I want to fetch the Persons that are similar to a Person1 based on the favorite Books overlaping. That is: The more books they have in common, the more they are similar. I don't have to use only SQL to solve this problem. I could use programming also. I'm using SQL Server 2008 and C#. What solution would you experts use?

  • Best way to tackle global hotkey processing in c#?

    Hi all I'd like to have multiple global hotkeys in my new app (to control the app from anywhere in windows), and all of the given sources/solutions I found on the web seem to provide with a sort of a limping solution (either solutions only for one g.hotkey, or solutions that while running create annoying mouse delays on the screen). Does anyone here know of a resource that can help me achive this, that I can learn from? Anything? Thanks ! :)

    I am doing some expensive caluations right now. It is one programm, which I run several instances of at the same time. I am running them under linux on a machine with 4 cpus with 6 cores each. The cpus are Intel Xeon X5660, which support hyper thearting. (That's some insane hardware, huh?) Right now I am running 24 processes at once. Would it be better to run more, b/c of HT ?

  • What's the best way to transition to MVC coding?

    It's been around 5 months since I picked up a PHP book and started coding in PHP. At first, I created all my sites without any organizational plan or MVC. I soon found out that was a pain.. Then I started to read on stackoverflow on how to separate php and html and that's what I have been doing ever since. Ex: profile.php <--this file is HTML,css. I just echo the functions here. profile_functions.php <--this file is mostly PHP. has the functions. This is how I have been separating all my coding so far and now I feel I should move on and start MVC. But the problem is, I never used classes before and suck with them. And since MVC (such as cakephp and codeigniter) is all classes, that can't be good. My question: Is there any good books/sites/articles that teaches you how to code in MVC? I am looking for beginner beginner books :) I just started reading the codeigniter manuel and I think I am going to use that. When I looked at the example MVC, they use different PHP coding. When I start coding in MVC, would I have to learn a "new" way to code? Because right now I am coding in pure basic PHP.

  • What is the best way to automatically transpose a LilyPond source file into multiple keys?

    problem I'm using LilyPond to typeset sheet music for a church choir to perform. Depending on who is available on any given week, songs will be played in various keys. We have an amazing pianist who can play anything we throw at her and the guitarists will typically pencil in alternate chords, but I want to make things easier by having beautifully typeset sheet music available in any key we want. So say we're going to sing our ABCs. First I'll take whatever source transcriptions available and enter it into a LilyPond script: melody = \relative c' { c c g g a a g2 f f e e d d c2 } I want the ability to transpose this automatically, so if I want the whole thing in 'G' I wrap the song in a \transpose call like so: melody = \transpose c g \relative c' { c c g g a a g2 f f e e d d c2 } What I really want is to substitute something for the 'g' and generate the output for melody multiple times. Simple LilyPond variables don't seem to work here, and so far I've been unsuccessful in defining a scheme function to do this. What I've resorted to for the moment is taking the above file, call it twinkle.ly and turning it into an M4 script called twinkle.ly.m4, the contents of which look like this: melody = \transpose c _key \relative c' { c c g g a a g2 f f e e d d c2 } I then compile the while thing by executing the following line: > m4 -D _key=g twinkle.ly.m4 > twinkle_g.ly && lilypond twinkle_g.ly I've written a Makefile to do this for me, defining rules for every song I have and every key I'm interested in. question There's got to be a better way of going about this. Given that Lilypond supports embedded scheme, I would prefer to not use a macro preprocessed on it. Has anybody else come up with a solution to this same problem?

  • What's the best way to read a UDT from a database with Java?

    I thought I knew everything about UDTs and JDBC until someone on SO pointed out some details of the Javadoc of java.sql.SQLInput and java.sql.SQLData JavaDoc to me. The essence of that hint was (from SQLInput): An input stream that contains a stream of values representing an instance of an SQL structured type or an SQL distinct type. This interface, used only for custom mapping, is used by the driver behind the scenes, and a programmer never directly invokes SQLInput methods. This is quite the opposite of what I am used to do (which is also used and stable in productive systems, when used with the Oracle JDBC driver): Implement SQLData and provide this implementation in a custom mapping to ResultSet.getObject(int index, Map mapping) The JDBC driver will then call-back on my custom type using the SQLData.readSQL(SQLInput stream, String typeName) method. I implement this method and read each field from the SQLInput stream. In the end, getObject() will return a correctly initialised instance of my SQLData implementation holding all data from the UDT. To me, this seems like the perfect way to implement such a custom mapping. Good reasons for going this way: I can use the standard API, instead of using vendor-specific classes such as oracle.sql.STRUCT, etc. I can generate source code from my UDTs, with appropriate getters/setters and other properties My questions: What do you think about my approach, implementing SQLData? Is it viable, even if the Javadoc states otherwise? What other ways of reading UDT's in Java do you know of? E.g. what does Spring do? what does Hibernate do? What does JPA do? What do you do? Addendum: UDT support and integration with stored procedures is one of the major features of jOOQ. jOOQ aims at hiding the more complex "JDBC facts" from client code, without hiding the underlying database architecture. If you have similar questions like the above, jOOQ might provide an answer to you.

    Looking for a large European developer/software conference, open-source-friendly, programming-language-neutral, platform-neutral, vendor-neutral. Any recommendations? apparently there briefly used to be a Euro OSCON (2004-2006? what happened?) some good language/app-specific ones like EuroPython, EuroSciPy, DjangoCon European BarCamps seem kind of fragmented, esp. for an English-speaking audience anything bigger or better? If there isn't anything, I wonder if O'Reilly would resurrect Euro OSCON.

  • What's the best way to annotate this ggplot2 plot? [R]

    Here's a plot: library(ggplot2) ggplot(mtcars, aes(x = factor(cyl), y = hp, group = factor(am), color = factor(am))) + stat_smooth(fun.data = "mean_cl_boot", geom = "pointrange") + stat_smooth(fun.data = "mean_cl_boot", geom = "line") + geom_hline(yintercept = 130, color = "red") + annotate("text", label = "130 hp", x = .22, y = 135, size = 4) I've been experimenting with labeling the geom_hline in a few different ways, each of which does something I want but has a problem that the other methods don't have. annotate(), used above, is nice - the text is resizeable, black, and easy to position. But it can only be placed within the plot itself, not outside the plot like the axis labels. It also makes an "a" appear in the legend, which I can't dismiss with legend = FALSE. legend = FALSE works with geom_text, but I can't get geom_text to just be black - it seems to be getting tangled up in the line colorings. grid.text lets me put the text anywhere I want, but I can't seem to resize it. I can definitely accept the text being inside of the plot area, but I'd like to keep the legend clean. I feel like I'm missing something simple, but I'm just fried.     As a long time user of Delphi 7, I've rolled my own mouse wheel handling in a few controls but lately I've noticed that some recent applications only need the mouse cursor to be placed over a control (e.g a list box or tree view) for the mouse wheel activity to cause that control to scroll. This feels nice (as opposed to having to click focus a control before it responds to the wheel. Now I've moved to Delphi 2010 I'm wondering what is the 'correct' behavior? And what can I use in Delphi that avoids me having to bodge this with my own solutions now? Thanks.

  • Is this way the best solution to read and save images from Rss Feeds?

    Hi, I've build a "RSS Feed Reader" module to my application, and for every post with images in the content, I get the first that matches a specific size and then I save for future use as reference to the posts. When processing, everything works properly except when more then 10 images are saved at the same time (This value is variable). I got an 404 error after a while saving the images. Some images are saved, but not all of them. If I run the app in my local server, everything work as expected (using set_timeout(0) to avoid timeout errors). Currently my application is hosted at dreamhost and I'm using Zend Framework. I'm not sure if the problem is specif for Zend Framework applications, so I didn't put any tags about. I've had this problem another time with other projects hosted at dreamhost. They seems to limitate memory for operations like that. My question is: There is a better way to save images then this (maybe in background? a limited amount per operation?): require_once(APPLICATION_PATH .     I'm creating a ASP.NET MVC website and I was wandering which techniques do you guys use to protect primary key on these mvc urls. Actually ASP.NET MVC generates this syntax for its urls: /Controller/Action/Id Last week I was trying to encrypt it using SHA-1 Encryption, but this encrypter generates some special symbols like + (plus), / (slash), and other annoying chars which difficult the decryption. Perhaps creating a custom encryption should solve the problem. But I wanna here from you guys, do you have some ideas to protect mvc urls?

    I'm looking for for a programming book that reviews basic concepts like implementing linked lists, stacks, queues, hash tables, tree traversals, search algorithms, etc. etc. Basically, I'm looking for a review of everything I learned in college but have forgotten. I prefer something written in the last few years that includes at least a decent amount of code in object-oriented languages. This is to study for job interview questions but I already have the "solving interview questions" books. I'm looking for something with a little more depth and explanation. Any good recommendations?

  • What is the best way to get an audio file duration in Android?

    Hi! I'm using a SoundPool [ 1 ] to play audio clips in my app. All is fine but I need to know when the clip playback has finished. At the moment I track it in my app by obtaining the duration of each clip using a MediaPlayer [ 2 ] instance. That works fine but it looks wasteful to load each file twice, just to get the duration. I could roughly calculate the duration myself knowing the length of the file (available from the AssetFileDescriptor [ 3 ]) but I'd still need to know the sample rate and the number of channels. I see two potential solutions to that problem: Figuring out when a clip has finished playing (doesn't seem to be possible with SoundClip). Having a class which could load just the header of an audio file and give me the sample rate/number of channels (and, ideally, the sample count to get the exact duration). Any suggestions?
