• Nagios orphaned services warnings

  We have had Nagios running on one of our servers with out any problems for a while but lately certain old service warning have been reappearing and then disappearing on the service detail page. From looking at the logs I found warning like the following. Warning: The check of service 'Tomcat' on host 'virtual1' looks like it was orphaned (results never came back). I'm scheduling an immediate check of the service... Has anyone ever came across this before or at least know a way to delete the old Orphaned Warnings. The Nagios Version we are running is Version 3.0b7 so an update might be in order. Thanks.

• Finetuning movement based on gradual rotation towards a target

  I have an object which moves towards a target destination by gradually adjusting its facing while moving forwards. If the target destination is in a "blind spot", then the object is incapable of reaching it. This problem is ilustrated in the picture below. When the arrow is ordered to move to point A, it will only end up circling around it (following the red circle) because it is not able to adjust its rotation quickly enough. I'm interested in a solution where the movement speed is multiplied by a number from 0.1 to 1 in proportion to necessity. The problem is, how do I calculate whether it is necessary in the first place? • Geek Bike Ride at JavaOne 2012 - Pictures

  Following the tradition of JavaOne Latin America 2011, a gorgeous day in San Francisco marked the beginning of JavaOne 2012 with another Geek Bike Ride. About 50 Java developers got together this morning at Fisherman's Wharf and rode a bike along Marina, Crissy Field, Fort Mason, Golden Gate Bridge, and ultimately finishing in Sausalito downtown. This is a beautiful biking trail, mostly flat with a couple of good hills. Some folks even continued to Tiburon for an extra challenge. Check out map by Blazing Saddles for the exact course. They provide excellent bike rentals and a good service too! • Transforming object world space matrix to a position in world space

  Im trying to make a function for picking objects with a bounding sphere however I have run in to a problem. First I check against my my bounding sphere, then if it checks out then I test against the vertexes. I have already tested my vertex picking method and it work fine, however when I check first with my bounding sphere method it dosnt register anything. My conclusion is that when im transform my sphere position in to the position of the object in world space, the transformation goes wrong ( I base this on the fact the the x coordinate always becomes 1, even tho i translate non of my meshes along the x-axis to 1). So my question is: What is the proper way to transform a objects world space matrix to a position vector ? This is how i do it now: First i set my position vector to 0. XMVECTOR meshPos = XMVectorSet(0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f); Then I trannsform it with my object space matrix, and then add the offset to the center of the mesh. meshPos = XMVector3TransformCoord(meshPos, meshWorld) + centerOffset;

  Hi. Actually I am a glad to writing with geekwithblogs service! but I decided to write a blog to improve my skills on different aspects. This post’s title is “Fatal Scroll”. Motivation for this post was the process of changing my blog theme. When I was trying to change the blog theme, encountered a killing scroll in configuration page of blog. you can see the sample in this picture. (10 inch screen) All I saw in my screen without scrolling was that. I tried to change my blog a few times. but the scroll slows down my try !! after all I gave up changing the FK theme!! In my opinion there is a check list for designing efficient and useful forms.(if you care about it!!) First of all, don’t forget wide range of screen sizes and screen resolutions. Second, always consider the cost of checking the changes made in fields. Third, never forget the scroll. scroll should not hide any main functionality (like save in this case). Forth, don’t use real data to preview the result. (like loading full blog to check new theme) and don’t forget didn’t say this list is a definitive list data entry form usability testing!  That’s it! • OCS 2007 R2 Client not syncing Addrss book

  I've checked online for most solution for this issue, but nothing seems to be working. When I check the log files on our OCS 2007 R2 server, it is identifying 25 users in the address book. However, when I try and force a sync with the clients, they do not update. I can find the users if I search for them, but they are not coming down by themselves. Is there anything I can check or force from the client side? There is no address book file locally to delete and re-force down.

• Torrents: Can I protect my software by sending wrong bytes?

  Hi, It's a topic that everyone interests. How can I protect my software against stealing, hacking, reverse engineering? I was thinking: Do my best to protect the program for reverse engineering. Then people will crack it and seed it with torrents. Then I download my own cracked software with a torrent with my own torrent-software. My own torrent-software has then to seed incorrect data (bytes). Of course it has to seed critical bytes. So people who want to steal my software download my wrong bytes. Just that bytes that are important to startup, saving and loading data, etc... So if the stealer download from me (and seed it later) can't do anything with it, because it is broken. Is this idea relevant? Maybe, good torrent-clients check hashes from more peers to check if the packages (containing my broken bytes) I want to seed are correct or not? Thanks

  Our partner was explaining to me that they are using GUID as primary key on all the tables. My immediate reaction was - why? and couple of basic doubts were: - since I can read uniqueidentifier, it does not tell me absolutely anything - if I will use my relational table, i sure will use other columns to get the information out - SQL is terrible when setting up clustered index on GUID columns (and hence performance problems) - why not use INT? it will save you space on disk, optimizer will be able...(read more)

• Create a Shortcut To Group Policy Editor in Windows 7

  If you’re a system administrator and find yourself making changes in Group Policy Editor, you might want to make a shortcut to it. Here we look at creating a shortcut, pinning it to the Taskbar, and adding it to Control Panel. Note: Local Group Policy Editor is not available in Home versions of Windows 7. Typing gpedit.msc into the search box in the Start menu to access Group Policy Editor can get old fast. To create a shortcut, right-click on the desktop and select New \ Shortcut. • front end to linux std mailbox for development purposes

  I am actually a software developer, do have a fair amount of linux experience as a user though since 1997. I am normally on stackoverflow.com, please excuse me if this question isn't appropriate here. I am working on a web project. We send out emails. I work locally on a linux box. When coding I use my local mailboxes to check what's been sent. Emails sent out to valid email addresses are not arriving at my official mailbox; they might be stopped by the provider's mail servers (gmail, yahoo). Now, we are sending out HTML mails too. I need to check how they look like. Is there a GUI frontend to the standard linux BSD mailbox? Or should I install some IMAP/POP server for this? Will such server get the emails sent to username@localhost ? Thanks for any suggestion

  With the following setup I get a blinking cursor after installation: Windows 7 64bit installed in first SSD (not UEFI, using MBR) Installation of Ubuntu 12.04 64Bit on gpt partioned disk seems to work without problems but does not boot. It stops with a blinking cursor. Partitioning scheme: sdb1 efi boot partition fat32 sdb2 root btrfs sdb3 home btrfs sdb4 swap Is it possible to mix uefi BIOS with MBR and gpt when using two separate SSDs? I tried grub2 into a MBR as well but it would not install there...

• Why doesn't update-manager allow me to upgrade distribution?

  I have an Ubuntu 9.04 PC behind a corporate firewall and proxy server. This requires that in order to get update-manager to fetch and apply updates, I must set the proxy and authentication settings in the Synaptic network configuration. Once done, I can check for updates and things work smoothly (except I don't get popup notifications of new updates, must manually check periodically). However, distribution updates just don't show up in update-manager, such as the newly released 9.10 Karmic Koala. I had the same issue in upgrading 8.10 to 9.04 and solved it by downloading and upgrading from the 9.04 ISO. What do I need to do to upgrade to 9.10 using the standard update-manager UI?

• Can't write to NTFS formatted drives

  I'm not sure what has happened, but I've all of a sudden lost write access to any of my NTFS external drives. I installed a few games and apps from the software center, and now I can't make new folders or copy and paste files to anything that is NTFS. Everything is now read only, and I've tried so many things to fix it, but it seems hopeless. Just to check if it wasn't the drives themselves, I made a little ntfs formatted truecrypt volume, and a fat formatted volume. And yes, it seems that Ubuntu is blocking me from writing anything to NTFS. What happened here? Whats a way I can simply get write access to my NTFS drives, so I can just backup all my stuff. I'll probably reinstall Ubuntu. Please help. UPDATE (and thanks everyone for their quick replies) The problem has been solved. Prior to noticing that I had lost NTFS write permission, I had installed GParted from the software center, and there was an extension called ntfsprogs that came with it. During my search for a solution to the problem, I uninstalled GParted (as that was one of the apps I installed just before the problem). But that did not solve the problem. I came across an app called 'NTFS Configuration Tool'. When I installed this, it said that the ntfsprogs extension needed to be removed (so I guess uninstalling GPARTED, didn't remove the ntfsprog extension). I launched the NTFS Configuration Tool and now I have write access to NTFS drives. Unfortunately, I didn't check if I had write permission prior to launching the NTFS Configuration Tool, so I'm not sure whether the NTFS Configuration Tool, or the un-installation of ntfsprog gave me back NTFS write permission. Hopefully if another newbee encounters this problem, they'll come across this page and know what to do.

• Windows Update can't install Windows Vista SP1

  If you install Windows Vista RTM and run Windows Update, many updates are offered and will successfully install. Once all other updates are installed, Windows Vista service pack 1 is offered. When you attempt to install Windows Vista service pack 1, the service pack installation wizard appears, presenting the license agreement and so on. However, shortly after the installation starts the wizard disappears. Windows Update says that the update was installed successfully. However, service pack 1 is not in fact installed, and will be detected as needed again on the next update check. Repeat ad nauseum. On checking the Windows Update log, error 0x80190194 appears near the beginning of an update check, associated with the URL http://update.microsoft.com/vista/windowsupdate/redir/vistawuredir.cab. Why won't service pack 1 install properly and how do I fix it?

• How to drop packets in a custom Intrusion Detection System

  Hi there, I'm trying to build a custom Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDS/IPS). I found a great utility named ROPE which can scan the packet payload and drop the packet that doesn't follow the rules, set by a script. This serves my purpose completely, since what I want to do is check the payload for some specific text and then drop it or allow it ( the string feature in iptables wouldn't do me any good, because I want to check more than one string in tha payload, like usernames, id's, etc ). However, ROPE is really old and despite my many attempts I haven't managed to install it properly. Do you know any similar program that will help me drop packets in iptables depending on the payload? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated :)

• Any Way to monitor JMX Servers with NetIq ?

  I ask this question after a search in the site, there's many JMX questions but I think no one with a NetIq involved. In the documentation of NetIq, There's no "module" to check JMX, but I have seen that u can make "custom" modules and "custom" scripts, in Perl and VbScript. The question is if anyone with more experience than me on NetIq, has made any custom script or module to check JMX. I look on technet too, for a JMX Api for Windos Shell or Powershell with no luck. Of course, JMX is much more powerfull, but what I really need is to "monitor" some values inside NetIq, because we cant install Nagios, Cacti, Hyperic or any other monitor software but NetIq. • SSL cert issued to and SAN attribute

  I have added a cert to my application cacerts file. The new cert is issued to one DNS(abc.com) and they have added few other DNS(XYZ.com, TEST.com) to the SAN attribute while creating. I tried accessing one of the DNS(XYZ.com) given in SAN attribute, it throws me the below mentioned error. <Certificate chain received from XYZ.com failed hostname verification check. Certificate contained abc.com but check expected XYZ.com> If we have more DNS for an application, Do we need to generate cert for every single DNS?

• The Windows Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) and the Windows Azure Training Kit (WATK)

  Windows Azure is a platform that allows you to write software, run software, or use software that we've already written. We provide lots of resources to help you do that - many can be found right here in this blog series. There are two primary resources you can use, and it's important to understand what they are and what they do. The Windows Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) Actually, this isn't one resource. We have SDK's for multiple development environments, such as Visual Studio and also Eclipse, along with SDK's for iOS, Android and other environments. Windows Azure is a "back end", so almost any technology or front end system can use it to solve a problem. The SDK's are primarily for development. In the case of Visual Studio, you'll get a runtime environment for Windows Azure which allows you to develop, test and even run code all locally - you do not have to be connected to Windows Azure at all, until you're ready to deploy. You'll also get a few samples and codeblocks, along with all of the libraries you need to code with Windows Azure in .NET, PHP, Ruby, Java and more.
