• Is SHA sufficient for checking file duplication? (sha1_file in PHP)

  Suppose you wanted to make a file hosting site for people to upload their files and send a link to their friends to retrieve it later and you want to insure files are duplicated where we store them, is PHP's sha1_file good enough for the task? Is there any reason to not use md5_file instead? For the frontend, it'll be obscured using the original file name store in a database but some additional concerns would be if this would reveal anything about the original poster. Does a file inherit any meta information with it like last modified or who posted it or is this stuff based in the file system? Also, is using a salt frivolous since security in regards of rainbow table attack mean nothing to this and the hash could later be used as a checksum? One last thing, scalability? initially, it's only going to be used for small files a couple of megs big but eventually... Edit 1: The point of the hash is primarily to avoid file duplication, not to create obscurity.

• How do I completely disable caching in Cakephp?

  So I opened the cache floodgates in my Cakephp app and now I want to close them... I've done pretty everything I can: delete all files in the tmp folder (but not the folders), turned 'Cache.disable' on in the core.php file in my app, have tried clearing the cache from within some controllers with clearCache() and Cache::clear() (but I suspect this doesn't work because it's not loading the controller -- due to caching). I've pretty much effectively halted my development process just because caching won't turn off. Anyone have some ideas that I could try? I'm starting to think it may be within the browser or maybe my hosting service, but it's probably just Cakephp messing with me.

  Hi all, I see a backdrop being added to my launch icon on the Samsung Galaxy S devices. I need this backdrop changed to a custom backdrop which we created. I know this can be changed since apps like"Daily Briefing" have their own cloud like backdrop making the launch icon look really rich. If anyone does know how to change this backdrop please let me know. I am talking about the background image set behind the icons. Eg: in the below image on the 1st row can you notice the yellow backdrop for Memo app, Green backdrop for Mini Diary app, similarily in the 3rd row notice the green backdrop behind the MAIL app....   I have a huge plain text document, about 700kb which is very big for plain texts and I need to format it on cloud converting it to HTML, but the only things that I need to replace, format to HTML so it can be displayed by the browser, are bold and italic. For bold at the plain text they are like this: Not on bold... **bold text here** not bold here And italic like this: Not italic... *italic text* no italic Just like StackOverflow does for their formatting, but the problem is that I need to make it a lot faster, since the text is so big... One of my ideas was to add a page slide, so I the script just need to format some part of the text, not it all, then after the user changes the page the script would be called again, but the problem is how I can make the code for this all?

• Errors when using a Ruby On Rails scaffold with a data type of interger

  I am learning Ruby On Rails. I am on a shared hosting with Ruby version 1.8.1 and Rails version 2.3.10. I am working my way through a tutorial at http://railstutorial.org/chapters/a-demo-app?version=2.3#top and at one point in the tutorial it has me run: script/generate scaffold Micropost content:string user_id:interger The tutorial is using the default database, SQLite3. The command works and I use rake db:migrate to create the database. I can view the page listing the microposts (which is empty), but when I try to add a micropost (microposts/new) I get an error undefined method `user_id' for #<Micropost:0x7f710e4988e8> After doing some testing on my own it seems I experience the problem by using the data type of interger. While I understand that using a scaffold is not the best way of building a ruby on rails, I'm just beginning and would still like to know why I am experiencing this problem to help me better understand how rails works.

  i have hosting accout in go daddy its a delux plan so i can assign more than one url right now i got two of them they both registerd throgh go daddy in the same account. right now i would like to give some storage space to a freind that have a url ( also go ddady) in a different account . and i do not know how to do it . i think he needs to set up his name servers as my name servers so he did and than i should add his url in the domain maneger i did that also and even installed joomla on this particular folder that i assinged to his url nothing happenend . am i missing somthing ? plz help if you can :)

• best method for background uploader in Android

  Problem: I want to write a process that will allow a user to take photos with the device and for those photos to then be uploaded to some listener in the cloud. The user should not have to do anything to initiate the upload, a background listener would just watch the folder and as long as it finds files in it it would upload them and delete them. Two problems: 1) how to keep the program running in the background even after the user is no longer taking pictures (and if they reboot the device for it to wake up and finish the uploads, if any remain) 2) assuming the connection is spotty (as it always is) how to verify that a given image has completed its upload, and if not, to resubmit it. I don't need any code examples, I just would like opinions on the best strategy to get this implemented. I was going to use Apache commons and just do an upload to a PHP, but am not sure what sort of error checking exists to take into account a connection drop mid file. TIA.

  Hi, I started a new project and created a local git repo with "git init" and now I have a few branches and everything works great. • Why are mainframes still around?

  It's a question you've probably asked or been asked several times. What's so great about Mainframes? The answer you've probably been given is "they are fast" "normal computers can't process as many 'transactions' per second as they do". Jeese, I mean it's not like Google is running a bunch of Mainframes and look how many transactions/sec they do! The question here really is "why?". When I ask this question to the mainframe devs I know, they can't answer, they simply restate "It's fast". With the advent of Cloud Computing, I can't imagine mainframes being able to compete both cost-wise and mindshare-wise (aren't all the Cobol devs going to retire at some point, or will offshore just pickup the slack?). And yet, I know a few companies that still pump out net-new Cobol/Mainframe apps, even for things we could do easily in say .NET and Java. Anyone have a real good answer as to why "The Mainframe is faster", or can point me to some good articles relating to the topic?

• Mongoose Not Creating Indexes

  I have been trying all afternoon to get my node.js application to create MongoDB indexes properly. I am using the Mongoose ODM and in my schema definition below I have the username field set to a unique index. The collection and document all get created properly, it's just the indexes that aren't working. All the documentation says that the ensureIndex command should be run at startup to create any indexes, but none are being made. I'm using MongoLab for hosting if that matters. I have also repeatedly dropped the collection.   Actually I have a domain - domainone.com I have created a subdomain cname of anoter domain as abc.domaintwo.com - CNAME as - domainone.com so that I can use the js and css files e.g domainone.com/js/jquery.js files as abc.domaintwo.com/js/jquery.js SO Far everything is FINE, no issues at all. Problem: I have a custom 404 page for domainone.com and now when that abc.domaintwo.com goes 404 same page appears which i don't want. Any help is appreciated. Htaccess of domainone.com: ErrorDocument 404 /404/ All i want is to have different 404 for both..... Notes: Don't have access to shell for symlinks or alias as I am on shared hosting.

If you use the mac, the behaviour I'm looking for is something like what the Dock uses; when you drag something out of the bounds of the control it should get an icon that indicates that it'll be deleted (OSX uses a cloud or something?) and then if you release it it will be removed from the list. Additional requirements (that preclude hosting an IRC server myself): IM style appliction -- Download and install one app on each PC. The app lives in the tray. New messages appear in a notification window on everybody's pc. Secure -- No Ventrillo Harassment nonsense. Only those with access can see and read what's going on.   hey there! I have a project running on dreamhost hosting and it's working fine, but since DH has been getting really slow I'm moving the project to my new dedicated server. The thing is that after I move all of my file over to the new dedicated (ubuntu 8.4) I get see warnings all over the place telling me that the headers had been already sent. The first thing I tried was moving the files via FTP: download to my machine, upload to server - Didn't worked Second try was tar.gz the folder on the first server and untar it on the new one, didn't worked either I tried chaing enconding to ANSI and they start working, however most of my files contain accents so ANSI is not an option for all my files i need UTF8 Any ideas on how to fix this? I'm sure it must be some sort of config

  I'm creating a search function for my website where the user can put in anything he likes in a textfield. It get's matched against anything (name, title, job, car brand, ... you name it) I initially wrote the query with an INNER JOIN on every table that needed to be searched. SELECT column1, column2, ... FROM person INNER JOIN person_car ON ... INNER JOIN car ... This ended up in a query with 6 or 8 INNER JOINs, and a whole lot WHERE ... LIKE '%searchvalue%' Now this query seems to cause a time'out in MySql, and I even got a warning from my hosting provider that the queries just taking up too many resources. Now obviously I'm doing this very wrong, but I was wondering how the correct approach to these kind of search functions is. Thanks!

  I have a web app hosted in a cloud environment which can be expanded to multiple web-nodes to serve higher load. What I need to do is to catch this situation when we get more and more HTTP requests (assets are stored remotely). How can I do that? The problem I see from this point of view is that if we have more requests than mongrel cluster can handle then the queue will grow. And in our Rails app we can only count only after mongrel will receive the request from balancer.. Any recommendations?

Hosting a site on godaddy, the site is developed in codeigniter framework(php), to get pretty url, put this into .htacess RewriteEngine on RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|images|robots\.txt) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /index.php/$1 [L] problem is only domain.com/index.php seems to work, other urls e.g domain.com/user/login won't work, codeigniter always returns '404 page'. Is there anything going on with godaddy's mod_rewrite or just their apache which as I know is version 1.3. Any clue? [update] a bit CI debug, found /system/libraries/Router.php line 239, line show_404( $segments[0] ); always gets invoded. $segments [ 0='index.php' ], that seems to be the problem, but why? All works on my dev box which is in apache2

But now I want to take my project further and stream a realtime screen capture of my desktop . The idea is that users accessing my asp.net website will be able to view whatever Im doing on my desktop in real time via the video streaming from my computer. Is there some way to know the minimum value that is not used (higher than 27000 for example) in mysql table? Or there is no way and I need to make an separate table with all ports and column with "used" or "not used" ? Situation explanation: I am creating game hosting website, and I can use auto-increment for ports, but I will have a lot of deleted/unused ports after some time, and I want to use all of them before increasing port range. • Problem installing wordpress child themes.

  Hi, I've tried to install either the Fusion or Thematic child themes for my blog. My Wordpress directory is located at myblog/wordpress while my domain is just myblog (example). Everything works fine with both basic themes or the parent Fusion or Thematic themes. When I install a child theme for either framework, I can view the preview and select 'activate.' However, after that my entire site crashes. I can't even view the wordpress admin panel. I've had to restore my database from my hosting provider just to get my blog working. All that I'm able to see is my favicon icon and a blank page. I've tried to deactivate all plugins and this doesn't help either. I really want to use the Hybrid News child template. Any thoughts on what might be happening? thanks so much!

I am currently looking at using some free hosting that works well for my current needs but doesn't give me any way to point "mydomain.com" to the actual site. Instead I have to give users a longer, harder to remember url. My proposed solution is to point my domains to my home ip and host a small ASP.NET app through IIS consisting of a redirect page that simply redirects to the appropriate site. Is there a way in ASP.NET to recognize which domain url was requested in order to know where to redirect the page to?

  I have a project which needs to generate PDF documents. I am using iTextSharp. I have a pdf which needs to be read and then appended to. To read the pdf document, I'm using PdfReader(), which accepts many forms, but I can't figure out how to reference a pdf in my webapplication to PdfReader. My host does not allow Binary Serialization (apparently that's bad), so I don't think I can load from an embedded resource. I've tried just using PdfReader("report.pdf"), but it keeps throwing an exception telling me that the file isn't found. I've tried putting the file in the bin directory, root directory, in the same directory as the class, but this still doesn't work. It works if I use a fully qualified path to the pdf document, but I can't use that when I upload it to my hosting provider. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should do this? Thanks

• What would be my best MySQL Synchronization method?

  We're moving a social media service to be on separate data centers with global load balancing, as our other hosting provider's entire data center went down. Twice. This means that both websites need to be synchronized in some sense -- I'm less worried about the code of the pages, that's easy enough to sync, but they need to have the same database data. From my research on SO, it seems MySQL Replication is a good option, but the MySQL manual, for scaling out, says that its best when there are far more reads then there are writes/updates: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/replication-solutions-scaleout.html In our case, it's about equal. We're getting around 200-300 thousand requests a day right now, and we can grow rapidly. Every request is both a read and write request. What would be the best method or tool to handle this?
