• Hardlink files not the same

  I created a hardlink of a file as follows: ln /path/to/source/file1 /path/to/target/file2 Using md5sum, the two files are identical. After a while, the source file has been modified by another program. The target file does not get "updated". The md5sums are now different. The files are on the same partition of course, otherwise I could not create a link. What I'm trying to do is get a copy of the source file into the target folder (which is versioned), so that I have access to the source file elsewhere. I tried moving the source file to the target folder with a different name and then creating a symlink to it at the source, but the program expecting the file then (somehow) created a file of the name it wanted in the target folder. Ideas?

• Tessellating to a curve?

  I'm creating a game engine, and I'm trying to define a 3D model format I want to use. I haven't come across a format that quite does what I want. My game engine assumes a shader model 5+ environment. By the time I'm finished with it, that won't be a very unreasonable requirement. Because it assumes such a modern environment, I'm going to try and exploit tessellation. The most popular way, it seems, to procedurally increase geometry through tessellation is to tessellate to a height map. This works for a lot of things, but has limitations in that height maps still use up VRAM and also only have finite scalability. So I want to be able to use curves to define what a mesh should tessellate to. The thing is, I have no idea what definition of curves I should use, how I should store it, and how I should tessellate to it. Do I use NURBS curves? Bezier? Hermite? And once I figure that out, is there an algorithm to determine how the tessellation shader should produce and move vertices to match the curve as closely as possible? Is the infinite scalability and lower memory usage when compared to height maps worth the added computational complexity? I'm sorry I'm kind if ignorant as to these matters. I just don't know where to start.

• JQuery / JSON + .Net Service Layer - to WCF or Not to WCF?

  I Recently had a discussion with a colleague of mine about the pros / cons of WCF. He mentioned about how much code is generated to support WCF, and also the overhead required. It was mentioned that a simple jQuery /Ajax post to a .aspx page (or a handler for that matter) that returns JSON would work more efficiently and takes much less code to implement. I am also aware of the new WCF Web API and feel that technology may solve the "bloated"-ness required in attaining a proxy etc... by just outputting JSON. So when developing a relational DB (MSSQL) storage model, with a fairly complex Business Layer (C#) and Data Access Layer (EntityFW).. what's a good technology for creating a "service layer" which will spit out View Models represented in JSON, with a CQRS(Command Query..) approach in mind.. The app would use the service layer to support it's required UI, as well as provide an available subset of services (outputting JSON data) for service subscribers.. In other words an admin panel to support the admin UI, and service endpoints that return JSON to access the configurations made from the administration UI. What are some potential technologies to use as the transport / communication layer. I'd like to use a pure RESTful approach, but am not against doing some URL rewriting with IIS. Obviously some of the available technologies are: WCF WCF Web API (should this even be separate?) Straight request / response (query string to .aspx / handler) Would using MVC .Net solve this entire problem? maybe their single page app approach? any suggestions / feedback from developing this type of application? • Can't access some websites with any browser

  I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on a new Samsung laptop and accessing the internet okay via ethernet cable to my university's ISP. Some sites work fine (e.g. google.com) but I can't access others at all (microsoft.com, topshop.com). I can't connect to those sites in safe mode with networking. And ping and tracert both fail. There's no proxy. Other users can connect successfully to these sites using my cable and socket. I've tried all the following with no success: using various browsers (IE9, FF, Chrome) creating a new user updating drivers clearing the DNS cache using OpenDNS and Google's DNS turning off Avast tweaking the MTU running MS malicious software removal tool running Spybot S&D reviewing the hosts file disabling the IPv6 options repairing / resetting winsock settings disabling advanced javascript options I have run out of ideas... can anyone see anything I've missed??!

• Bacula not backing up all the files it should be doing

  I have Bacula (5.2) running on a Fedora 14 system backing up several different computers including Windows 7, Windows 2003 and Windows 2008. When backing up the Windows 2008 server the backup stops after a relatively small amount has been backed up and says the backup was okay. The fileset I am trying to backup should be around 323Gb, but it manages a mere 27Gb before stopping - but not erring. I did try creating a mount on the Fedora computer to the server I am trying to backup, and Bacula managed to copy 58Gb. When I tried to use the mount to copy the files manually I was able to copy them all - there are no problems with permissions etc. on the mount. Please can anyone give a reason why Bacula would just stop? I have heard there is a 260 character limit, but some of the files that should have been copy resolve to a shorter filename than some that have been backed up.

  I would like to backup, not only the databases that belong to a particular application living on a shared server, but also, those things that get stored outside of the database; the server accounts, jobs, maintenance plans and whatever else I can't think of at the moment. This backup should be complete enough that it's corresponding restore will recreate the entire application on a different SQL server. This seems like a problem others must have dealt with in the past. So before I embark on creating custom Powershell scripts for each application, I have come to ask you... Can you help?

  Windows 8.1 upgrade created a second recovery partition. Can I remove the original? Prior to this the partitions were Recovery, EFI, OS(C:), Data(D:). After the upgrade partitions are Recovery, EFI, OS(C:), Recovery, Data(D:). The first Recovery partition is 1023MB the second is 350MB The "Create a system image" tool selects the EFI, OS(C:), and the second 350MB Recovery partitions. The first 1023MB Recovery partition is not listed, I have to "assume" it is now redundant. The factory (HP) Recovery Partition was removed using the HP provided tool after creating recovery disks, and the D: partition created months ago.

  I have been trying to create my very first game for quite a while, followed some tutorials and stuff, but I am stuck at creating my entity system. • Preparing computers for remote MSI installation in NT4 domain

  We recently purchased EMCO Remote Installer to deploy MSI packages we're creating. We are still (unfortunately) in an NT4 domain, and when I try to deploy a package using domain's administrator credentials I'm getting "access denied". Under the "requirements for remote computers" section on the EMCO website (http://www.emco.is/products/remote-installer/requirements.php), it says that it requires remote machines to have: * Started services: Computer Browser, Remote Registry * File and Printer sharing enabled * Windows Installer 3.1 * TCP ports opened: 135, 139, 445 * UDP ports opened: 137, 138 Is there any way of scripting these changes? If so, could someone get me started? I have about 200 machines I need to get this working with. Thanks for all your help!!

• SSL Certificate Works in Monit - But Not in Keystore

  I have a situation where there's a keystore file with the various root/intermediate certificates stored in it in a way that it seems to work for most browsers. Problem is that when mobile browsers hit it, there's a break in the chain and they complain. I used an SSL checker at http://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html and it states that "The certificate is not trusted in all web browsers. You may need to install an Intermediate/chain certificate to link it to a trusted root certificate." So...the desktop browsers must have the intermediate certs already and can make the chain connections, I'm assuming, while the mobile browsers can't. The thing is that I had used Portecle to export certificates from the keystore and cobble them together to create a .PEM certificate to run the Monit utility. When I check that application with the SSL checker, it works fine! The person that originally created the keystore said he couldn't follow the SSL provider's directions for creating the keystore because he created the CSR request using openssl, so the cert and private key had to be converted to DER format and use importkey to get it to work; following the directions he found online had importkey seem to use only a set keystore file as a result, and it would erase anything already in the file if it existed. So is there a way to take the certificate I created for Monit and create a working keystore for the Tomcat website? What would be causing the chain to be broken in the current keystore, but work for Monit? I have the SSL cert provider's intermediate and cross certificates, and the website's certificate, but is what else would I need to create a working chain of certs for a keystore?

  I'm having issues with restoring my .bak files to my own sharepoint environment due to version difference. My version is currently: Sharepoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License Ms sharepoint Foundation 2010 core : 14.0.4763.1000 Security Update of Ms sharepoint Foundation 2010(kb2494001) 14.0.6106.5008 Server Version(Where I'm creating my Backups): SharePoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 Core : 14.0.4763.1000 Security Update for Office SharePoint Foundation 2010 (KB2345322) : 14.0.5123.5002 I would like to know if there is a way I could enable my backups from the Server to be compatible with my version. My only option is to downgrade my version since I'm not an admin to the server. Does my Client Access License an issue? Can I just downgrade my security update to match the one in the server? If there is would you please be kind enough to tell me how. ?

• ASP.NET MVC Application In Action - I (DailyJournal)

  Its been long due I was planning to write an article on creating some useful ASP.NET MVC application. I have code named it "DailyJournal". Its a simple application which allows creation of multiple activities and assign tasks to these activities. Its' kind of "Yet another Task/Todo application". Some points of warning before we move further with this application. This is just an early prototype. As such many of the design principles have been ignored. But, I try to cover that up in the next update once I get my head around this. The application in its current state supports the following features Create users Assign Activities to users Assign tasks to activities Assign a status to a task The user creation/authentication is being done by the default Membership provider. Most of the activities are highly visual i.e. you can drag-drop task to different areas, in-place edition of task details and so on.   The following are the current issues with the design which I promise to refactor in the second version. No Validations Fat Controller XSS/CSS vulnerable No Service model/abstraction yet. For the demo LINQ to SQL is implemented. No separation of layers UI Design et el... • Oracle SPARC SuperCluster and US DoD Security guidelines

  I've worked in the past to help our government customers understand how best to secure Solaris.  For my customer base that means complying with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).  I recently worked with a team to apply both the Solaris and Oracle 11gR2 database STIGs to a SPARC SuperCluster.  The results have been published in an Oracle White paper. The SPARC SuperCluster is a highly available, high performance platform that incorporates: SPARC T4-4 servers Exadata Storage Servers and software ZFS Storage appliance InfiniBand interconnect Flash Cache  Oracle Solaris 11 Oracle VM for SPARC Oracle Database 11gR2 It is targeted towards large, mission critical database, middleware and general purpose workloads.  Using the Oracle Solution Center we configured a SSC applied DoD security guidance and confirmed functionality and performance of the system.  The white paper reviews our findings and includes a number of security recommendations.  In addition, customers can contact me for the itemized spreadsheets with our detailed STIG reports. Some notes: There is no DISA STIG  documentation for Solaris 11.  Oracle is working to help DISA create one using their new process. As a result, our report follows the Solaris 10 STIG document and applies it to Solaris 11 where applicable. In my conversations over the years with DISA Field Security Office they have repeatedly told me, "The absence of a DISA written STIG should not prevent a product from being used.  Customer may apply vendor or industry security recommendations to receive accreditation." • Setting up SVN+SSH for multiple users through one local user.

  Hi, I need to make our SVN repository accessible through the firewall - but without creating a local user for each potential external user. Instead, I would like to set-up SVN+SSH to route all external users through a single local user name. We would like each external user to authenticate with SSH the regular way but then treat their instance of svnserve as if they're all that single local user and possibly, control what parts of the repository each external user can access. I know that I will need to set my svnserve config according to the official guide. I tried, but the instructions are fuzzy and I am relatively a Linux n00b. What exactly are the steps to proceed? and how would you go about testing this? Thanks for your help.

• Does Exchange 2010 lift the restriction that DL addresses must be in Active Directory?

  We'd like to enable end-users to be able to create and maintain their own email distribution lists in Exchange 2010, where those lists may include users inside the company but also customers, partners, etc. who are outside the company. One of the limitations in Exchange 2007 (see this question) was that any member of a DL had to have an entry in active directory. You couldn't just take a group of email addresses (both inside and outside my company) and create an Exchange DL with those addresses without involving Active Directory admins to create entries for each external user. For a company creating hundreds of small mailing lists every month, this was an unacceptable IT expense. So we had to use a separate mailing list solution (GNU mailman) for DLs which included external users. Is this limitation relaxed in Exchange 2010 so we can throw away GNU mailman and use Exchange instead?

• Powershell: Install-dotNET4 function

  This function will download and install ,NET 4.0. It uses the Get-Framework-Versions function to determine if the installation is necessary or not. Internet Connectivity will be required as the script auto downloads the setup file (and sleeps for 360 seconds... I had a function in there to monitor for install completion at first, turns out the setup file spawns so many childprocesses the function just got confused and locked up -_-)Alternatively you could drop the installation file in the folder specified on the $folderPath variable too. That will skip the download and use the file. This function easily adapts in to other versions f.e. • Memory concerns while plotting escape from DLL Hell in Delphi

  I work on a program with about 50 DLLs that are loaded from one executable, it's an old organically grown program where the only rationale for creating a new DLL is that one previously didn't exist to fill a given need. (and namespaces didn't exist in Delphi so it never crossed our mind to make dll1.main.pas, dll2.main.pas or something even more unique) What we want to do is consolidate all these DLLs into one executable, since none of them are used out of the program, there shouldn't be much of a problem. The concern my boss has is that if we did this, the memory overhead for terminal server clients would go through the roof. So, I've stepped through enough initialization code to know that lots of stuff is done every time a DLL is loaded in to memory, but say I've got a project with about 4000 files, and 50 dlls, 10 of which are probably utilized by any one user in any one session of the program. The 50 dlls are about 2/3rds form files, if not more, but beyond that there's not a lot of other resources being loaded (only a few embedded pictures, icons, cursors, etc..). If I loaded all these files in to memory, how much memory is used per unit? how much is used per class? How do I keep the overhead down? and what is the biggest project one can reasonably expect to build with Delphi? This tidbit won't help answering, but I think it might clarify what my boss is worried about, we currently start our program at about 18megs, normal working conditions are usually less than 40 megs, he thinks it could climb as high as 120 megs.

  I am aware this question has been asked before, but unfortunately I am new to the language, so the complicated explanations I've found do not help me in the least. I need a lighting engine for my game, and I've tried some procedural lighting systems. This method works the best: if (light[xx - 1, yy] > light[xx, yy]) light[xx, yy] = light[xx - 1, yy] - lightPass; if (light[xx, yy - 1] > light[xx, yy]) light[xx, yy] = light[xx, yy - 1] - lightPass; if (light[xx + 1, yy] > light[xx, yy]) light[xx, yy] = light[xx + 1, yy] - lightPass; if (light[xx, yy + 1] > light[xx, yy]) light[xx, yy] = light[xx, yy + 1] - lightPass; (Subtracts adjacent values by 'lightPass' variable if they are more bright) (It's in a for() loop) This is all fine and dandy except for a an obvious reason: The system favors whatever comes first in the for() loop This is what the above code looks like applied to my game: If I could get some help on creating a new procedural or otherwise lighting system I would really appreciate it!

• Windows Disk I/O Analysis

  It appears that we are having a problem with the disk i/o speed on our Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server (64-bit). As we were initializing a database that created two 1G tablespaces on 3 different machines, it became obvious that the two smaller machines (each 32-bit Windows 2003 Standard Edition with less RAM) killed the larger machine when creating the files. The larger machine took 10x as long to create the tablespaces than did the other machines. Now, I am left wondering how that could be. What programs or scripts would you guys recommend for tracking down the I/O problem? I think the issue may be with the controller card (all boxes are hardware RAID 10, but have different controller cards), but I would like to check the actual disk I/O speed as well, so I have some hard numbers to work with. Any help would be appreciated.

• Sonicwall NAT Policy Loopback

  I have an issue and am pretty perplexed over it. I have a sonicwall and its setup with NAT polices and reflexive nat for an internal web server. That is, only 2 policies, no loopback policy, and the internal clients can access the web server by public ip no problems. Now, on another connection, another sonicwall, i have the exact same setup for another web server, with exact same policies (obviously different IP's) and the internal clients can't access the internal website by its public IP without creating the loopback policy. Maybe on the first one I've overlooked it, but I don't see any loopback what so ever and its working fine. My question is, does anyone know why the first one works like this but the second one needs the loopback policy? Thanks

• "Serious errors found HF checking the drive for /home" After Moving /home to external HFSplus partition

  I just installed Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" and Ubuntu 11.10 on my MacBook Pro. Using these instructions: tuxation.com/creating-home-partition-mac-linux.html . After changing the location of my home folder to the new location, it gives me the error in the title, and my username no longer appears in the login screen. Using the "Other" option with my username seems to make it try to log in, but the screen quickly flashes between blank and a shell before kicking me back to the login screen without notice. I'm trying to share my home folder between Mac OS X and Ubuntu, using an hfsplus partition (unjournaled) between the two. The home partition seems to mount fine as /home, and I am able to modify it under Ubuntu. Below is the line I've added to fstab: /dev/sda3 /home hfsplus defaults 0 1 I should also note that I changed my account's username and home directory location to match this, though I've double checked that and everything seems in order there... Thank you in advance for any assistance. Edit: It seems that the /etc/passwd file didn't have my new home directory's location in it, so I changed that, and I am now able to log into my account, although I am still not listed in the login screen, and my username in the menu on the top right shows up as "[Invalid UTF-8]"...

• What is a 'best practice' backup plan for a website?

  I have a website which is very large and has a large user-base. I am trying to think of a 'best practice' way to create a back up or mirror website, so if something happens on domain.com, I can quickly point the site to backup.domain.com via 401 redirect. This would give me time to troubleshoot domain.com while everyone is viewing backup.domain.com and not knowing the difference. Is my method the ideal method, or have you enacted better methods to creating a backup site? I don't want to have the site go down and then get yelled at every minute while I'm trying to fix it. Ideally I would just 'flip the switch' and it would redirect the user to a backup. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
