• Application Event Log keeps getting corrupted

  I recently asked about repairing a corrupt event log, because it seemed to be a one-off event. The event log has since exhibited the same behavior 3 times. We have been trying to find patterns, but so far we have found nothing. The server runs several ASP.NET applications and three scheduled tasks written in .NET. The last modified date of the event log once happened to be the same time as one of the scheduled tasks, but the others have not been. Any suggestions of where to look next or a way we can get any information out of a corrupt evtx file? The server is running critical e-commerce applications, so we want to keep the number of restarts required to a minimum. • Incorrect directory permissions with OpenSSH on Cygwin on Windows Server 2008 SP2

  I ran into a weird directory permission problem when logged in to a Win2008SP2 (not R2) server through SSH. When I open a local cygwin shell on the server, i can do this: myUser@myServer ~ $ cd /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/ myUser@myServer /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv $ cd config myUser@myServer /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/config $ I have no issues accessing the 'config' directory when using a local cygwin shell. 'myUser' has all necessary permissions to access the directory as well. In fact, 'myUser' is a local administrator on the machine. Listing the permissions of the config folder through the local cygwin shell shows the following output: 4 drwx------+ 1 SYSTEM SYSTEM 0 Aug 2 09:38 config But when I log into the server with a SSH client (in this case Putty), i run into the following problem: myUser@myServer ~ $ cd /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/ myUser@myServer /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv $ cd config -bash: cd: config: Permission denied It also doesn't list the proper permissions through SSH: 0 drwxr-x--- 1 ???????? ???????? 0 Aug 2 09:38 config When I look at the running processes on the server with Task Manager (with a remote desktop connection), it shows that all bash.exe processes are running under the 'myUser' account, so I don't understand why I can't access that particular directory through SSH but have no problems accessing it in a local cygwin shell. I'm using OpenSSH 5.9p1-1. I'm not sure what the Cygwin version is... I used the latest setup.exe (version 2.738) of Cygwin, but I can't seem the find any other Cygwin-related version number. I doubt that it's related to SSH/Cygwin though, because when I connect from the Win2008SP2 server to my local Win7 machine through SSH (using the same OpenSSH/Cygwin versions) I can access the /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/config folder without issues. Does anyone have an idea on what the issue could be?

  I've inherited a Subversion repository, running on FreeBSD and using Apache2.2 . Currently, we have one project, which looks like this. • Apache22 on FreeBSD - Starts, does not respond to requests

  Hey folks! I'm running Apache 2.2.17 with the peruser MPM on FreeBSD 8.2-RC1 on Amazon's EC2 (so it's XEN). It was installed from ports. My problem is that, although Apache is running, listening for, and accepting connections, it doesn't actually respond to any or show them in the log at all. If I telnet to the port it's listening on and type out an HTTP request: GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: asdfasdf And hit enter a couple of times, it just sits there... Nothing. No response requesting with a browser either. ExRCA is testing Exchange ActiveSync. The Exchange ActiveSync test failed. Test Steps Attempting to resolve the host name mail.xxxxx.com in DNS. The host name resolved successfully. Additional Details IP addresses returned: xx.0.x3.4 Testing TCP port 443 on host mail.x.com to ensure it's listening and open. The port was opened successfully. Testing the SSL certificate to make sure it's valid. The SSL certificate failed one or more certificate validation checks. Test Steps Validating the certificate name. Certificate name validation failed. Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it Additional Details Host name mail.x.com doesn't match any name found on the server certificate CN=xxxxxx. • pg_dump not working - do I need to change order of $PATH?

  I'm trying to set the $PATH to pick up the latest version of pg_dump as I'm currently getting a mismatch error while doing a migrate in my Rails app (I recently changed the schema type to SQL). • Cannot schedule task to run under domain user account other than current user

  On our Win 2008 machines I can't schedule tasks for domain users because the domain name does not resolve to network name but the AD dc name. The "network name" looks like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM and the "dc" / "name" would look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN. When selecting the domain user account the account qualifier will look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN\task.user. This results in an "invalid account" error. When however keeping the currently logged in user it will display ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM\current.user. Does this behaviour result from the presumable "illegal" domain name? Is there a workaround for this? update I could of course log in as the desired domain account and create the task but since this account is a account used for running services I want to avoid creating a user profile on the machine.

• Why would one of my servers stop being able to access other servers by FQDN?

  I have a number of servers on our local network and our debian server has suddenly stopped being able to access the other servers via their FQDN. Initial symptom was inability to login with Active Directory accounts. On further inspection, this machine, porkbelly, was unable to access our other servers (e.g. bacon and albert) via their FQDN. That is, they can ping albert by running ping albert but not by running ping albert.domain.local though when running ping albert it will be expanded to albert.domain.local. The server is still accessible from other servers via both porkbelly and porkbelly.domain.local. Upon examination of hosts information and running hostname its hostname and FQDN are correct. The resolv.conf appears correct. It contains: domain domain.local search domain.local nameserver 192.168.0.xxx (the nameserver) The dns server is also our Windows AD server. I'm not even sure where to go from here or why dns seems to be partially working though I don't have much experience. Where should I go from here? What might be causing this issue where machines are visible via their hostname but not their FQDN?

• TFS2010 Hangs “Waiting for Build Agent”

I have 3 VM's each running the TFS Build Host Service 1 has 1 controller and 1 agent 2 have 2 Build Agents each. Most of the time (7\10 builds) it comes back with the following error message TF215097: An error occurred while initializing a build for build definition BUILD_DEFINITION: There was no endpoint listening at http://MACHINE1:9191/Build/v3.0/Services/Controller/14 that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. • Simple (I hope) Excel question about

  I am doing a directory for my neighborhood. We had most of the information from a previous directory. The information was entered: A1 name, B1 address and C1 phone number; B1 name, B2 address, C2 phone number etc. The publisher wants the information in a different format A1 name, A2 address, A3 phone number, A4 blank; A5 name, A6 address, A7 phone number, A8 blank etc... Is there an easy (or heck - a not so easy) way to have Excel change the format of the information without me having to hand type 1300 households information? I will also need to reformat the information a second time into a crisscross. The format for that one is: A1 Street name, A2 Address Number, B2 Resident Name and C2 Phone number.

• Synergy: Cannot send media keys from Linux to Mac

  I have a Linux Synergy server (Si-Linux) serving just one Mac client (Macbook Pro UK) (SiBook-Pro.local). On my Linux server I am using a USB Apple keyboard with the exact layout of the laptops keyboard (the compact UK aluminium keyboard). I tried to reverse the client-server config to see if I could capture the key being sent if I pressed the Play button on the Macbook but the key doesn't seem to even make it to Synergy. Almost all keyboard presses get logged but the media keys seem to bypass the logs and just execute their function locally. E.g. I press play on the Macbook (with the Macbook as the server) and the key plays music on the Macbook and the key is not logged to the debug log.

• Cannot send email to info@ or support@

  I am trying to send email from my gmail account to a couple user accounts I have on my new Centos server. The email is setup correctly and I can send receive from accounts ok except info and support. I tried to setup two users "info" and "support" I have a php form that sends out email that works fine for all users except info and support. To test this and make sure that something did not change from yesterday i just created a new user "frank" and tried the submit form and it worked fine. From my gmail account i can email "frank" however i cannot email "info" or "support" The logs I pulled are as follows and i think i see the issue but no idea how to fix it. • Dual DC Time Service

  I believe I'm having an issue with my Domain Controllers and Time Server. On my back up DC, I keep seeing a warning stating "The time service has stopped advertising as a time source because the local clock is not synchronized." Does this mean that my backup DC believes it's a Time Server? My PDC should be the time server and I have gone through setting up the PDC as the time server. I was not around for the original setup of the time server with the old PDC and Backup DC. But I believe the old PDC was the time server so I setup the new PDC as the new time server, when I decommissioned the old PDC. Is it possible that the Backup DC was setup as the time server and it still thinks it's suppose to be giving out time to everyone? • Cannot schedule task for domain user account

  On our Win 2008 machines I can't schedule tasks for domain users because the domain name does not resolve to network name but the AD dc name. The "network name" looks like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM and the "dc" / "name" would look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN. When selecting the domain user account the account qualifier will look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN\task.user. This results in an "invalid account" error. When however keeping the currently logged in user it will display ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM\current.user. Does this behaviour result from the presumable "illegal" domain name? Is there a workaround for this?

• Excel: How do I copy hyperlink address from one column of text to another column with different text?

  I have a spreadsheet where column A displays names in a certain format. There are 200-odd names and each has a different hyperlink (which links to that person's web page). I want to reformat the name order so it is "Surname, Name" rather than "Name Surname" and retain the hyperlink in the newly formatted column. I have achieved "Surname, Name" easily by splitting the names into two columns (using LEFT and RIGHT formulae) - forename and surname - then I have a new column with a formula to return "Surname, Name." However, the hyperlinks are not in that new column and I need them. I don't want to do this manually, for obvious reasons. I cannot find a way of copying just hyperlinks from column A without copying the text from column A. So, effectively, what I need is some sort of macro to take, for example, the hyperlink from A2 and copy it to H2, with H2 still retaining the updated ordering of name. I don't have the knowledge to write this myself, so would appreciate solutions.

• What is the name of the this DOS font? Where and how to add it? Why is there a 1 pixel gap?

  So basically I somehow stepped into this webpage: www.braindamage.vg And the first thing that hit me hard was the lovely DOS fonts, so naturally I wanted to get them into my IDE badly. Opened the html source file and CSS file to find the font name: @font-face { font-family: 'Perfect DOS VGA 437'; src: url('http://www.braindamage.vg/wp-content/themes/braindamage/dosfont.eot'); } @font-face { font-family: 'Perfect DOS VGA 437'; src: url('http://www.braindamage.vg/wp-content/themes/braindamage/dosfont.svg#dos') format("svg"), url('http://www.braindamage.vg/wp-content/themes/braindamage/dosfont.ttf') format ('truetype'); } So I download the font, add it using Control Panel - Fonts. But once I start using it (notepad, MSVS 2008 & MSVS2010) I notice that it looks slightly off: It seems like there's 1 extra pixel between each character. How it should look: What is causing it and how to fix this? Is it the windows XP? (i have disabled font smoothing) Or is there something wrong with the font file?

• Looking for VCS wrapper that tracks system files changing across the whole *nix OS and sends diffs through email

  I need some software that looks after custom directories across the whole OS (i.e. /etc) and alerting me if someone edit something file inside. Additionally, this tool must automatically commit and push changes into backup server, so I can easily determine when specific change in specific file was made. I'm using cvsbackup right now but I want to create or found something more modern. I think using git as VCS is a great idea. I could have local repository and easily revert changes in my configuration files. Furthermore, pushing changes to the remote repository would helps me to recover my configuration files when the server is fault. It doesn't seems difficult to write some wrapper around the git but there are a lot of problems. For example, I need to track custom directories: /usr/local/nginx/ and /etc/. So the destination point for my git repository is /. I don't need to track the other directories so I must to write overwhelming .gitignore rule: * !.gitignore !/etc/ !etc/* !/usr /usr/* !/usr/local /usr/local/* !/usr/local/nginx !/usr/local/nginx/* It's very daunting and prone to error. So it's maybe a good idea to create intermediate file that wrapper reads and converts to .gitignore format. Additionally, I don't want to keep my .git folder in / partition so I need to set appropriate GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE variables for git. Is there any ready to use tools for implementation this task? I don't found any but I don't believe that no one needs this feature.

• Add Service Reference is generating Message Contracts

  OK, this has been haunting me for a while, can't find much on Google and I am starting to lose hope so I am reverting to the SO community. When I import a given service using "Add service Reference" on Visual Studio 2008 (SP1) all the Request/Response messages are being unnecessarily wrapped into Message Contracts (named as -- "operationName" + "Request"/"Response" + "1" at the end). The code generator says: // CODEGEN: Generating message contract since the operation XXX is neither RPC nor document wrapped. The guys who are generating the wsdl from a Java service say they are specifying DOCUMENT-LITERAL/WRAPPED. Any help/pointer/clue would be highly appreciated. Update: this is a sample of my wsdl for one of the operations that look suspicious. • Validation Summary for Lists using Data Annotations with MVC

  I currently use a custom method to display validation error messages for lists but would like to replace this system for using with Data Annotations. In summary on validation of my form, I want to display "*" next to each input that is incorrect and also provide a Validation Summary at the bottom that relates each error message to the particular item in the list. e.g. say if validation failed on the 2nd list item on a Name input box and the 4th item on an Address input box the validation summary would display [2] Name is invalid [4] Address is invalid Please ignore if there are mistakes in the code below. I'm just writing this as an example.
