• Changing SPF (Sender Policy Framework) record for Google Apps

  My boss asked me to set up Google Apps for a client and basically I have done everything including setting up MX records in DirectAdmin and re-creating the email accounts in Google Apps. I also sent a few test emails to ensure that it actually works and it seems fine. But then I discovered this article talking about changing the SPF record for the domain. http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=178723 After reading the introduction I think it would be better for me to change the SPF record according to this article. So I logged in to the DirectAdmin and navigated to the DNS management, and then I found that there's already a TXT SPF record there: v=spf1 a mx a:spf.cabin.com.hk include:gmail.com -all And it looks like it's already including gmail.com, but according to the article it should be: _spf.google.com rather than: gmail.com I dare not to change it before I understand what this record actually means. What would you do with this record if you were me?

• Always use one slow connection in preference of a "faster" one

  In Windows, there's this automatic metric thing where the metric is selected according to the declared speed of the link. I now have a gigabit LAN routed to a 2MB DSL service and a HSDPA mobile broadband connection. The former is always chosen for Internet packets even though the latter is actually faster. I tried setting the mobile broadband's interface metric to 1 and raising its priority in the advanced settings of the adapter settings, but this does not seem to affect the metric of the default route. The default route to the Ethernet interface always have a lower metric than the mobile broadband interface. Am I missing something here?

What I'm trying to figure out is: how I can tell which machine or domain user (either will do) is connected to a particular wall jack?

• What permissions / ownership to set on PHP Sessions Folder when running FastCGI / PHP-FPM (as user "nobody")?

  I'm having trouble getting a number of scripts running because PHP-FPM can't write to my session folder: "2009/10/01 23:54:07 [error] 17830#0: *24 FastCGI sent in stderr: "PHP Warning: Unknown: open(/var/lib/php/session/sess_cskfq4godj4ka2a637i5lq41o5, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in Unknown on line 0 PHP Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/var/lib/php/session) in Unknown on line 0" while reading upstream" Obviously this is a permission issue; my session folder's owner/group is the webserver's user, NGINX. PHP-FPM runs as nobody though, and hence adding it to the nginx group is not so trivial. A temporary solution is to set the permissions of /var/lib/php/session to 777 - I have a feeling that's not the "best practice" though. What is the best practice when you need to assign a daemon write access to a folder, but it is running as nobody ?

• PDF rendering of images seems to vary from viewer to viewer with blurring?

  I'm generating PDF figures in Adobe Illustrator CS5 that include embedded images. I've noticed that the images look dramatically different when I display the same PDF in Preview, Skim or Adobe Reader (I'm on OS X). See screenshots. Adobe Reader displays them "correctly" while Skim and Preview blurs the image out each in a different way. Is there a setting I can set when saving my PDF from Illustrator so that the images are displayed correctly in Skim and Preview? The PDF was generated in Illustrator and saved without any compression or downsampling. • Stop jucheck from running

  I've installed Java on Windows Vista, and every day I get a Vista security warning asking me if I want to run "jucheck". Apparently this is the Java automatic updater. Well, I don't want it to run on its own, ever. I cancel it, and quit it. I right-click on the taskbar and unclick "Check for Updates Automatically", and then click "Never Check", and "Apply". And yet, it never remembers this setting. If I come back to the "Java Control Panel" right after clicking "OK", the very same box is checked again, all on its own. Is there some way to kill jucheck once and for all? If I simply delete jucheck.exe, will Java (other than the automatic check) still work, and will manual updates still work, and will it stop even trying to update every morning?

• PDAnet on Android IP on PC is not public IP. Where does the NAT take place, PDAnet or Verizon?

  When using PDAnet on a PC (Win7 ultimate) to USB tether a Motorola Droid on Verizon 3G the IP address of the PC appears to be public - 64.245.171.115 (64-245-171-115.pools.spcsdns.net) - but connections show as coming from another public IP - 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com). Someone is performing Network Address Translation - either PDAnet or within the Verizon 3G network. Can someone tell me who is doing the NAT? Is it PDAnet or is it at Verizon? Is there any possibility of setting up port forwarding, such that connections to the public IP 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com) are forward to the PC? We are testing a network protocol that requires either a true public IP or forwarding a range of ports from the public Internet to the system on which the software runs (actually Linux hosted by VMware Player or Workstation on a PC running Windows).

• EC2-like virtualisation platform with non-RDP access

  I'm looking into setting up a few small VMs. The trouble is the software I intend to install on them (Cisco VPN Client) blocks out networking (other than to the target VPN destination...) with no workaround. This means that Remote Desktop or other methods of connecting to VMs that go via the Internet (e.g. GoToMyPC, LogMeIn) are a non-starter. What I'm really looking for is an EC2-like platform but which gives direct access to the VM through (for example) Hyper-V Manager. Sadly the only way they all seem to offer to remote control the VMs is direct access via Remote Desktop, whereas I need to be one layer above that (if that makes sense). A viable alternative would be to run virtualisation software within a Windows EC2 instance; obviously hardware virtualisation is impossible but I wonder if there are any software virtualisation platforms that could be run and that would work. Does anyone know if something like this exists/is possible? Thanks! C

My config is as below: Public static network ID: x.x.x.48/28 gateway: x.x.x.49 available IP for the hosts: x.x.x.52 to 62 gw_eth0 <-- fw_eth0 - fw_eth1 <-- dmz_switch Four servers are connected on dmz_switch (say s1, s2, s3, s4) all have to use public static IP address from the above block. Any recommendation on IP assignment and route setup? Do I need to subnet the above block further or simply use /32 netmask and point-to-point static routes in the above setup?

  I have the following problem - Windows Vista does not connect to adhoc wireless network created on my Macbook. I have tried to create secured (with 40 bit key) and unsecured network but Windows Vista still has problems to connect. Windows VISTA informs me -- after 5 minutes of attempts - that setting up the connection -- with my adhoc network -- took too much time. My question: do I need to configure some settings on Vista to connect it to my Macbook? Maybe it is a problem with DHCP? • KVM not installed?

  When I run virt-manager, and click on the icon to create a new virtual machine, I get an error that KVM is not installed or is not loaded. I use Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 All qemu packages are version 2.0.0+dfsg-2ubuntu1 qemu-kvm and many other qemu packages installed... libvirt packages: 1.2.2-0ubuntu13.1 libvirt0 libvirt-bin libvirt-doc python-libvirt virt-manager 0.9.5-1ubuntu3 When I open terminal and enter lsmod | grep kvm I get nothing returned. No lines showing kvm or kvm_amd and no error of any kind. Hardware: Tyan S2877 with dual Opteron 285s I have the latest bios and don't see any setting in there to turn virtualization on or off. when I run sudo apt-get -s install qemu-kvm Here are the results: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done qemu-kvm is already the newest version. The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: kde-l10n-engb libgtk2-gladexml-perl libqt4-test libvncserver0 Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded. @jobin: the problem was my hardware.   Just a quick blog post to share a couple of scripts for using PowerShell to call SQL Compare. This is an example from my session at SQL in the City on setting up a sandbox development process. This just runs a compare between a set of scripts and a database and deploys it. set-Location “c:\Program Files (x86)\Red Gate\SQL Compare 10\”; ./sqlcompare /s2:DOJO /db2:MovieManagement_Sandbox /sourcecontrol1 /vu1:grant /vp1:12345 /r1:HEAD /sfx:scripts.xml /sync /mfx:migrations.xml /verbose; I would not recommend using the /verbose output for real automation, but I’m showing off how the tool works. This particular script does a compare straight from source control to a database on my server. You can use variables where I’ve hard coded. That’s it. Works great. Just wanted to share it out there. I have others that I’ll track down and put up here.

  Client filtering in Outlook 2010 is disabled when the server is managing spam filtering. Unfortunately I have a few high profile users that prefer to spam-block mailing lists rather than unsubscribe, so even though the email is not really spam they are upset that it is coming into their mailbox. As seen here, I am not the first person to wrestle with this issue, and the suggested fix there (setting New-FseExtendedOption –Name CFAllowBlockedSenders –Value true) also failed to work for me. Can anyone provide another possible fix? Thank you kindly.

• How to pass a filename to a shortcut in Windows

  I have a program program.exe and a document document.txt, and to open the document, I can drag document.txt onto program.exe. So far so good. Now I want to call it with a command-line parameter -param so that the full command line is program.exe -param document.txt Unfortunately, I can't do this with drag and drop, so I need to fire up cmd and type in the command manually. This takes too long, and I need an easier way. How can I create a shortcut that I can drop the file onto, and have it call the program with the command-line parameter? I tried setting the shortcut to program.exe -param "%1", but that didn't work, because it appeared to pass only the file name, and not the path, and since the current directory was the one with the program and not the one with the document, it couldn't find the document.

  I renamed some of my virtual machine files and never did a backup before doing so. Now I can't get the machine to start again as it asks for the old files. I have updated references to these files in the project setting files which are in plain text. The virtual machine keeps on asking for the files anyway. I never shut off the machine properly before starting to rename the files. How can I save my work done on the virtual machine disk? I have tried to create a new machine and adding the disk from the old virtual machine only but there seems to be dependencies between disk files. The parent drive cannot be found I am told when trying to add the drive of interest. Any suggestion on how to resolve the issue?

• Cannot login in account with encrypted home after update from 11.04 to 11.10

  After upgrading from ubuntu 11.04 to 10.10 I cannot access my encrypted home partition anymore. I can login, however all data stays encrypted. ecryptfs-mount-private gives: ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly Any idea how to fix this? • Do I need a ssl certificate if just pointing my domain to Cloudfront?

  I have a website running on a domain (e.g site.com). I have an additional domain(e.g sitecdn.com) which basically points to Amazon Cloudfront for delivery. Amazon Cloudfront in turn basically fetches the data from the main domain (site.com). I use this setup primarily to have multiple subdomains of my sitecdn.com to point to assets via the cdn. The main website has a ssl certificate, and I intend to put all assets served from the cdn as https links only. Something like <img src="https://img.sitecdn.com/image.jpg" /> I'm a little confused whether I need a ssl for my cdn domain. In cloudfront I can set the setting to allow both https and http traffic. Do I need a ssl certificate for this ? If yes, then where do I install the ssl certificate, since I don't have a server for sitecdn.com.

• Speeding up remote X sessions

  I have a remote machine running Ubuntu 11.10 Server, to which I connect via SSH from OS X 10.7.3: Host remote.example.com ForwardX11 yes ForwardX11Trusted yes Sometimes I want to launch a GUI application there (most notably, gitk). But UI is rather slow. Both remote machine and my own Mac have good internet connection. Ping between them is about 55ms, and there is no packet loss. Is there something I can do to speed things up? Setting up some other remote desktop solution is an option, but I'd like to avoid it since I don't need this application very often.

  It's possible change flash settings on your computer at this URL: http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html However, given that Macromedia has no problems setting LSO cookies on your HDD that you cannot find, I am a little bit skeptical that the settings I've tweaked there would be saved. So, I'd like to be able to look locally on my PC and verify the settings. Where can I find the settings for Flash locally? Surely the plugin cannot be heading to Macromedia itself for them (that is a future too bleak to contemplate). I am running Ubuntu 10.04. Thanks, Joe

• How to do networking between virtual machines in VirtualBox?

  I have two virtual machines in VirtualBox. I would like to do networking between them. For the moment I have the default configuration on both, but they seams to have the same IP-address 10.0.2.15. I would also like to be able to use Internet with both, and that is Possible now. By default the network-setting is NAT, but I seams like they cannot network internally since they have the same IP. But If I change to internal networking I guess that I cannot access Internet with the virtual machines. How can I set up networking between virtual guest AND have access to Internet on them?

• Application Launcher for Hyper-V Server

  We are currently in the process of setting up a HyperV R2 Server machine. Though there's not a lot we need to do wihtin the HyperV Server itself, the command line is sure minimalistic. There are a few administrative / Hardware Monitoring tools that we want to run on he machine itself (accessed through remote desktop). I am looking for a simple program/application launcher where we can hook up these maintenance tools (and one to open a new cmd.exe window in case I habitually close the one I'm working in!) However, all tools I tried by now more or less assume explorer is present, and fail in different ways. Before I go and write a simple one myself, any recommendations?

• When using TCP load balancing with HAProxy, does all outbound traffic flow through the LB?

  I am setting up an app to be hosted using VMs(probably amazon, but that is not set in stone) which will require both HTTP load balancing and load balancing a large number(50k or so if possible) of persistant TCP connections. The amount of data is not all that high, but updates are frequent. Right now I am evaluating load balancers and am a bit confused about the architecture of HAProxy. If I use HAProxy to balance the TCP connections, will all the resulting traffic have to flow through the load balancer? If so, would another solution(such as LVS or even nginx_tcp_proxy_module) be a better fit?
