  • Branching strategy for parallel development that won't be in the same release?

    - by Telastyn
My team is working on a product, which for business reasons needs to be released on a regular schedule. An issue has arisen where we want to do development in parallel for the upcoming release, as well as the 'next' release. This is to become standard practice, so it's not as straightforward as cutting a feature branch for the new work. We'll continually have 2+ teams working on different releases of the same product. Is there an SCM best practice for this sort of arrangement?

  • T-SQL User-Defined Functions: Ten Questions You Were Too Shy To Ask

SQL Server User-Defined Functions are good to use in most circumstances, but there just a few questions that rarely get asked on the forums. It's a shame, because the answers to them tend to clear up some ingrained misconceptions about functions that can lead to problems, particularly with locking and performance Can 41,000 DBAs really be wrong? • Without using a pre-built physics engine, how can I implement 3-D collision detection from scratch?

    - by Andy Harglesis
I want to tackle some basic 3-D collision detection and was wondering how engines handle this and give you a pretty interface and make it so easy ... I want to do it all myself, however. 2-D collision detection is extremely simple and can be done multiple ways that even beginner programmers could think up: 1.When the pixels touch; 2.when a rectangle range is exceeded; 3.when a pixel object is detected near another one in a pixel-based rendering engine. But 3-D is different with one dimension, but complex in many more so ... what are the general, basic understanding/examples on how 3-D collision detection can be implemented? Think two shaded, OpenGL cubes that are moved next to each other with a simple OpenGL rendering context and keyboard events.

  • Algorithm to generate N random numbers between A and B which sum up to X

    - by Shaamaan
This problem seemed like something which should be solvable with but a few lines of code. Unfortunately, once I actually started to write the thing, I've realized it's not as simple as it sounds. What I need is a set of X random numbers, each of which is between A and B and they all add up to X. The exact variables for the problem I'm facing seem to be even simpler: I need 5 numbers, between -1 and 1 (note: these are decimal numbers), which add up to 1. My initial "few lines of code, should be easy" approach was to randomize 4 numbers between -1 and 1 (which is simple enough), and then make the last one 1-(sum of previous numbers). This quickly proved wrong, as the last number could just as well be larger than 1 or smaller than -1. What would be the best way to approach this problem? PS. Just for reference: I'm using C#, but I don't think it matters. I'm actually having trouble creating a good enough solution for the problem in my head.

  • What Role Should SEO Play in the Development of Your Website?

Most SEO experts will agree that they are mostly called out to do fire extinguishing rather than fire prevention, and in many cases it would have been far better to team up with SEO expertise from the beginning of developing your website than to wait until traffic isn't coming. You need to build your website in cooperation with the SEO expert right from the start.

  • Can I associate a github gist with an organization?

    - by yc01
My team has a GitHub organization account. A lot of the work I do results in one-off scripts that we want to be able to have on our organization page, but that aren't big enough projects to justify their own repository. Is there any way to associates Gists with GitHub organization accounts? If not, what's the best way to 'check-in' or associate smaller scripts into Github's shared organizational repository?

  • Chapter 3: Data-Tier Applications

With the release of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, the SQL Server Manageability team addressed these struggles by introducing support for data-tier applications to help streamline the deployment, management, and upgrade of database applications. A data tier application, also referred to as a DAC, is a single unit of deployment that contains all the elements used by an application, such as the database application schema, instance level objects, associated database objects, files and scripts, and even a manifest defining the organization’s deployment requirements.

  • hypertext for research notes [closed]

    - by user967543
I keep lots of notes as I work - code snippets, TODO lists, account details, links, comments. I currently use plain text files for this - very simple and robust but a bit last-century. I would like features similar to HTML - e.g. to embed pictures, formatting, and crucially hyperlinks within my notes. One particular use-case is an implementation of Getting Things Done - more or less, a collection of hierarchical TODO lists, which I'd implement with hyperlinks between tasks. Most WYSIWYG HTML editors seem to be aimed at web designers, creating beautiful pages for professional websites. Is there a simple tool / editor more appropriate for how I want to use it? (or advice from anyone doing the same)

  • Pointers to implementing a taxonomy system?

    - by petsagouris
I am taking part in the development of a PHP CMS (yeah I know you are like, meeh). It is currently using simple tags for tagging content. What I want to do is push the whole thing to using Taxonomy but I am not sure on what to pay attention to, or how to go about structuring the whole vocabularies/terms. I'd love to be able to keep the user interaction close to that of the current simple tags and at the same time allow for more advanced usage by power users. The Drupal and the Wordpress taxonomy systems are being reviewed at the moment and they provide valuable resources. Nevertheless, it could be that someone has some simpler and more appropriate thoughts on this matter.

  • Converting obj data to CSS3D

    - by Don Boots
    I found a ton of formulae and what not, but 3D isn't my forte so I'm at a loss of what specifically to use. My goal is to convert the data in an 3D .obj file (vertices, normals, faces) to CSS3D (width, height, rotateX,Y,Z and/or similar transforms). For example 2 simple planes g plane1 # simple along along Z axis v 0.0 0.0 0.0 v 0.0 0.0 1.0 v 0.0 1.0 1.0 v 0.0 1.0 0.0 g plane2 # plane rotated 90 degrees along Y-axis v 0.0 0.0 0.0 v 0.0 1.0 0.0 v 1.0 1.0 0.0 v 1.0 0.0 0.0 f 1 2 3 4 f 5 6 7 8 Could this data be converted to: #plane1 { width: X; height: Y; transform: rotateX(Xdeg) rotateY(Ydeg) rotateZ(Zdeg) translateZ(Zpx) } #plane2 { width: X; height: Y; transform: rotateX(Xdeg) rotateY(Ydeg) rotateZ(Zdeg) translateZ(Zpx) } /* Or something equivalent such as transform: matrix3d() */ In summary, while this may be too HTML/CSS-y for game development, the core question is how to get the X/Y/Z-rotation of a 4 point plane from it's matrix of x,y,z coordinates?

  • Which is better? Native App or hybrid App?

    - by Prabakaran
I want to develop a simple App for iOS, Android and windows phone. I just wondered that a simple HTML5, JS and CSS combination can work in all of these platforms. I want to know which one will be efficient? No problem with time and coding. But if i can achieve everything with HTML5-JS itself, i will chose Hybrid development. I want to know the major difference between the Native and Hybrid Development with example(I know that the main difference is HTML5-JS supports cross platform). Note : I am not making a game app.
