• Anonymous users support vs Google bot

  I have a User class in my web app that represents a user currently logged in. Every time a user vists a page, a User instance is populated based on authentication data supplied in cookies. A User instance is created even if an anonymous user logs in - and a corresponding new record is created in the User table in the database. This approach allows me to save some state info for the current user regardless of its type. The problem however with this approach is the Google bot, and other non-human web organisms crawling my pages. Every time a bot starts to walk around the site, thousands of useless records will be created in the database, each of them only to be used for a single page. Question: what is the best trade off? How to support anonymous users, save their state, and don't get too much overhead because of cookieless bots?

  Hello, on a page, i have : if (!empty($_FILES['logo']['name'])) { $dossier = 'upload/'; $fichier = basename($_FILES['logo']['name']); $taille_maxi = 100000; $taille = filesize($_FILES['logo']['tmp_name']); $extensions = array('.png', '.jpg', '.jpeg'); $extension = strrchr($_FILES['logo']['name'], '.'); //Début des vérifications de sécurité... if(!in_array($extension, $extensions)) { $erreur = 'ERROR you must upload the right type'; } if($taille>$taille_maxi) { $erreur = 'too heavy'; } if(!empty($erreur)) { ....................... } The problem is, if the users wants to edit information WITHOUT uploading a LOGO, it raises an error : 'error you must upload the right type' So, if a user didn't put anything in the inputbox in order to upload it, i don't want to enter in these conditions test. i tested : if (!empty($_FILES['logo']['name']) and if (isset($_FILES['logo']['name']) but both doesn't seems to work. For example if I set the time interval for 5 minutes, and let say that is starts at 26.03.2010 10:15:44 Then I will get 2 as the results, since 1 distinct value between 10:15 to 10:20 and , 1 distinct value from 10:20 to 10:23, For example if my interval is 3 minutes than the return result will be 3 Thanks.

• HMAC URLs instead of login?

  In implementing my site (a Rails site if it makes any difference), one of my design priorities is to relieve the user of the need to create yet another username and password while still providing useful per-user functionality. The way I am planning to do this is: User enters information on the site. Information is associated with the user via server-side session. User completes entering information, server sends an access URL via e-mail to the user roughly in the form of: http://siteurl/<user identifier>/<signature: HMAC(secret + salt + user identifier)> User clicks URL, site looks up user ID and salt and computes the HMAC with the server-stored secret and authenticates if the computed HMAC and signature match. My question is: is this a reasonably secure way to accomplish what I'm looking to do? Are there common attacks that would render it useless? Is there a compelling reason to abandon my desire to avoid a username/password? Is there a must-read book or article on the subject? Note that I'm not dealing with credit card numbers or anything exceedingly private, but I would still like to keep the information reasonably secure.

  I'm learning Rails, and the target of my experiments is to realize something similar to Zoho Creator, Flexlist or Mytaskhelper, i.e. an app where the user can create his own database schema and views. What's the best strategy to pursue this? I saw something about the Entity-Attribute-Value but I'm not sure whether it's the best strategy or if there is some support in Rails for it. If there was any tutorial in Rails about a similar project it would be great. Probably it's not the easiest star for learning a new language and framework, but it would be something I really plan to do since a long time.

  Here is an example that illustrates my question. I have a program that lists 1000 items. I select 10 of 1000 items. The program enables a button indicating that a command is available for my selection. I click the button, and a window appears. I make some change in the window and click OK. The command changes 5 of the 10 items in my multiple selection, and those 5 changed items now reflect a modified state in my list. My question is: How do I indicate to user that the command affects a subset of a multiple selection before clicking OK? Can anyone cite examples of existing products that handle this scenario well?

It appears to me that in Windows Identity Foundation, once a user is logged in, the claims are basically strings of information that describe the user. With the old role-based authentication, I could say that a user is or is not a member of a given group, but with claims-based authentication, I can now have strings of information that describe a user. "This user is female". This user was born on "July 6, 1975". "This user logged in using a USB key". Is it the essence of claims-based authentication,that I have strings of information about the user given to the application by the framework?

  Our webapp has a form with fields and values that change depending on values entered. Each time there is a change event on one of the form elements, we use an expensive AJAX call to update other elements on the page. This works great for selects, radio buttons and checkboxes. The issue comes in when a user adds content to a text field, and then clicks a link without taking the focus from the text field. The browser moves to a new page, and the contents of the text field are never saved. Is there an easy way to code around this? The AJAX call is too expensive to call with each key press.   Okay, so I have a VPS and I made an account for a friend so he can host his own domains (using the reseller features in DirectAdmin). He's asking for SSH access, and I know that this is probably a bad idea. Does he have access to my whole server, such as executing commands, accessing my domains that I host on my server? I logged into my SSH using his account details and it let me navigate around all of the root folders/files, and his account is under /home/AccountName/. Is there anyway to restrict his access to his folder only? And the commands he can use?

This application will only be running on Windows, but may be running on any version from 2000 onward. • Is there a "dual user check-in" source control system?

  Are there any source control systems that require another user to validate the source code "before" it can be checked-in? I want to know as this is one technique to make sure that code quality is high. Update: There has been talk of "Branches" in the answers, and while I feel branches have there place I think that branchs are something different as when a developer's code is ready to go into the main branch it "should" be checked. Most often though I see that when this happens a lead developer or whoever is responsible for the merge into the main branch/stream just puts the code into the main branch as long as it "compiles" and does no more checks than that. I want the idea of two people putting their names to the code at an early stage so that it introduces some responsibility, and also because the code is cheaper to fix early on and is also fresh in the developers mind.

  Right now I'm building a project management app in rails, here is some background info: Right now i have 2 models, one is User and the other one is Client. Clients and Users have a one-to-one relationship (client - has_one and user - belongs_to which means that the foreign key it's in the users table) So what I'm trying to do it's once you add a client you can actually add credentials (add an user) to that client, in order to do so all the clients are being displayed with a link next to that client's name meaning that you can actually create credentials for that client. What i can't figure it out how to do is, that if you actually have credentials in the database (meaning that there's a record in the users table with your client id) then don't display that link. Here's what i thought that would work <% for client in @client%> <h5> <h4><%= client.id %></h4> <a href="/clients/<%= client.id %>"><%= client.name %></a> <% for user in @user %> <% if user.client_id = client.id %> <a href="/clients/<%= client.id %>/user/new">Credentials</a> <%end%> <% end %> </h5> <% end %> And here's the controller: def index @client = Client.find_all_by_admin(0) @user = User.find(:all) end but instead it just puts the link the amount of times per records in the user table.   Here is the scenario: There are 5 websites (different domain names) that need to share a session. I am using a bit of code on each site which returns a "blank.gif" image and at the same time sets the session (syncing it up to the current session). Each of the sites calls a session-img from each of the other sites. Also, all sites have access to the same database (where the session is stored). This works great on FF and Chrome, but not on IE (or Safari PC)... I need to come up with an alternative method to keep a session active? The app is a small custom CMS, so really only 2-3 people will be using it. I can probably identify user logins by IP and then continue to check for the IP accross all sites... Is there something more granular such as a computer uuid that i can check for?

Ideally the export would leave the document n a form where errors could be easily fixed by a non-programmer It would be good if niceties like section ordering and table of contents were available, or easy to add after the fact. Are any tools with features like these avalible?

When I run the application and press a key, the message box displays 1040 and 8209. When I call SetText the same two messages are displayed.
