  • My Favorite New Features in Visual Studio 2010

On Tuesday, April 13th, Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework 4.0 (which includes ASP.NET 4.0). To get started with Visual Studio 2010 you can either download a trial version of one of the commercial editions or you can go grab the free Visual Web Developer 2010 Express Edition. The Visual Studio 2010 user experience is noticeably different than with previous versions. Some of the changes are cosmetic - gone is the decades-old red and orange color scheme, having been replaced with blues and purples - while others are more substantial. For instance, the Visual Studio 2010 shell was rewritten from the ground up to use Microsoft's Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). In addition to an updated user experience, Visual Studio introduces an array of new features designed to improve developer productivity. There are new tools for searching for files, types, and class members; it's now easier than ever to use IntelliSense; the Toolbox can be searched using the keyboard; and you can use a single editor - Visual Studio 2010 - to work on . This article explores some of the new features in Visual Studio 2010. It is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but rather highlights those features that I, as an ASP.NET developer, find most useful in my line of work. Read on to learn more! • West Palm Beach Dev Group August 2012 Meeting Recap

    - by Sam Abraham
As the saying goes, it’s better late than never. Such is the case with my overdue West Palm Beach Dev Group August 2012 meeting report. Our August meeting was full of both knowledge and adventure. It comes as no surprise that the knowledge was brought to us by our favorite DotNetNuke Technical Evangelist, Will Strohl. Will introduced and thoroughly presented the new social features in DNN 6.2. Unfortunately, our meeting date coincided with Hurricane Isaac having just passed us by. Aside from road closures and floods that kept public schools closed for two days, our meeting host, PC Professor, had to close the school the day of our meeting on a short notice due to flooding which we found out about at midnight on the day of the event.  This left us scrambling to find an available alternate meeting location close enough to our original venue. Cancelling the meeting was always an option, but we opted to keep it as the very last resort. Luckily, we were fortunate to find a meeting room at the Hampton Inn only a few minutes away from our original location. Having heard of our challenge, our event sponsor, Applied Innovations, stepped-in and covered the meeting room cost in addition to the food and beverages. We would like to thank our volunteers and sponsors who made that event a success: Jess Coburn, CEO and Cara Pluff, Director of Sales at Applied Innovations, Dave Noderer for suggesting the alternate venue and Venkat Subramanian for his hard work keeping our members informed of the venue change and for being our event photographer.   We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings: -September 25th, 2012 with Jonas Stawski, Microsoft MVP -October 23rd, 2012 with our Microsoft Developer Evangelist, Joe “DevFish” Healy -Ending an exciting year will be our November 27th meeting with Dycom Industries’ Senior Software Developer, Tom Huynh.   All the best, --Sam

  • C#.NET vs VB.NET, Which language is better?

    Features I cannot say any language good or bad as long as it's compiler can produce MSIL can run under .NET CLR. If someone says C# has more futures, you can understand that those new features are of C# compiler but not .NET, because if C# has a specific future then CLR cannot understand them. So the new features of C# will have to convert to the code understood by CLR eventually. that means the new features are developed for C# compiler basically to facilitates the developer to write their code in better way. so that means no difference in feature list between C# and VB.NET if you think in CLR perspective. Ease of writing Code I feel writing code in C# is easy, because my background is C and C++, Java, syntaxes very are similar. I assume most developers feel the same. Readability But some people say VB.NET code most readable for the members who are from non technical background, because keywords are generally in English rather special charectors. No of Projects in Market I assume 80 percent of market uses C# in their .NET development. for example in my company many projects are there .nET and all are using C#. Productivity & Experience though the feature list is same, generally developers wants to write code in their familiar languages. because it increase the productivity. Hope this helps to choose the language which suits for you. span.fullpost {display:none;}

We would like to share idea among us on that platform. We can post questions and concerns related with the project, and we would like to respond each other. Here is my list of functionality I want: Tagging Thread e.g) Announcement, Finance, Legal, Idea. One thread can have multiple Tags. members can set on/off to receive email when new comments are posted. They can set on/off on each Tag. e.g) one member on to receive email related with "Announcement", but off to receive "Finance". Thread owner can change threads' tag any time. Thread can have several type of post. Thread can be "vote" thread. Everyone can vote their opinion. Thread can be "action plan" thread. In this thread, "who" will "what" remains in the thread. • You Can't Win on Price

    - by David Dorf
This year I did the majority of my Christmas shopping from the comfort of my home office. There aren't many things in stores you can't find online these days. I find it easier to search, research, and compare products online rather than walking the mall anyway. But there's a segment of the population that likes to be in the store, touching the products. For those people, smartphones avail them some of the e-commerce features I mentioned right there in the aisles. First it was RedLaser, then TheFind, ShopSavvy and many others. But the one that should be scaring retailers is Amazon's PriceCheck application. It lets you scan the product barcode, take a picture of the product, or speak the product's name. Once the product is identified, it shows the online prices, with Amazon at the top of the list. Within 10 seconds you can order the item and Amazon Prime members get free 2-day shipping too. I don't think fashion and grocery retailers need to worry much, but I have to believe smartphones are helping Amazon win a little more of the brand-name hardgoods market. So what's a retailer to do? Best Buy has begun to put QR Codes on their shelf labels that are easily scanned by smartphones and take the consumer to a Best Buy Web page where they can get extended information about the product. The consumer is getting the additional information they want, and Best Buy avoids the price comparisons. Of course if a consumer chooses to use the Amazon PriceCheck app, then all bets are off. That's when Best Buy has to hope the in-store experience and customer service will save the sale. My point is that the internet makes information available to everyone, and smartphones make it available anywhere. Unless you want your store to be Amazon's local showroom, you need to be price-competitive but differentiate on other aspects of the shopping experience. With the cost of running a physical store, you can't win on price.

  • IASA South East Florida Chapter Meeting Recap - June 2011

    - by Sam Abraham
Erik Russell and Giles Marino were our speakers for the June 2011 IASA South East Florida Chapter meeting.    Attendees filled all available seats at the Microsoft office conference room where the event was held. This highlights the high interest in Enterprise Architecture as a career track and chartered project role. Also in attendance were our Board of Directors and Alex Funkhouser, President, Sherlock Technology.   Rainer Habermann, Chapter President, kicked off the meeting by introducing our speakers and Board of Directors.   Alex Funkhouser, President of South Florida’s staffing firm Sherlock Technology spoke briefly about available Software Architect positions in the area. Alex also congratulated and presented this week’s Sherlock Raffle winner with $500 in cash.   Our speakers Giles and Erik then proceeded with their talk. Erik presented a business case in the government sector where Enterprise Architecture helped a government entity cut costs and streamline its various business operations. Technologies leveraged in Erik’s demonstrated project were Java-based.   Giles then followed with a thorough demonstration of the Architecture patterns he used to migrate a complete backend system for an insurance company to the .Net Platform.   Audience was very engaged with our speakers as evidenced by the large number of follow-up questions asked at the end of the talk.   We greatly enjoyed Giles and Erik’s talk and look forward to having them share with us more of their adventures as Enterprise Architects in the near future.   Below are some photos of the event.   Sam Abraham Secretary- IASA South East Florida Chapter. http://www.iasaglobal.org/iasa/South_East_Florida.asp Chapter President - Rainer Habermann kicks off our meeting.   Sherlock Technology President Alex Funkhouser holding Sherlock's weekly cash prize. - by Malisa L. Ncube
We had a very interesting .NET meeting in which i gave a short presentation on the new features of .NET 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010. The main presentation came from Jake Markhus @jmarkhus who talked about NHibernate (http://nhforge.org).   The membership for the group is growing each time we meet and its very encouraging. Some employers found candidates within our group for hiring, and this has resulted in a mutual benefit between the employers and job-seekers – really cool stuff.   Jake above giving us the soup and nuts of NHibernate. We were very excited since a number companies decided to support us in many ways. Some members won the licenses for Telerik Suite (http://www.telerik.com) while Intellisense LTD (http://www.intellisense.co.ug) agreed to sponsor us on domain registration and hosting of the community site. Jake announced on the possibility of having DevExpress (http://www.devexpress.com) sponsor us on 2 licenses of CodeRush http://www.devexpress.com/coderush which would be won in the next meeting raffle. I (@malisancube) would like to thank all the companies and individuals who have decided to sponsor us as a community of developers. We appreciate your support very much. • Top 10 Architect Community Articles for May 2014

    - by OTN ArchBeat
One of the things I get to do as an OTN community manager is work with members of the architect community who want to spend extra time pounding the keyboard and risking carpal tunnel syndrome to publish articles on OTN. These articles typically cover—but are not limited to—middleware technologies (the other OTN community managers cover other technologies and product areas). Naturally, we track the popularity of these articles and use that information to help guide editorial decisions about the many article submissions we get. The list below represents the Top 10 most popular architect community articles for May 2014. (This list reflects only articles published between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014.) • Observable Collections

    - by SGWellens
I didn't think it was possible, but .NET surprised me yet again with a cool feature I never knew existed: The ObservableCollection. This became available in .NET 3.0. In essence, an ObservableCollection is a collection with an event you can connect to. The event fires when the collection changes. As usual, working with the .NET classes is so ridiculously easy, it feels like cheating. The following is small test program to illustrate how the ObservableCollection works. To start, create an ObservableCollection and then store it in the Session object so it will persist between page post backs. I also added the code to pull it out of Session state when there is a page post back:   public partial class _Default : System.Web.UI.Page{    public ObservableCollection<int> MyInts;     // ---- Page_Load ------------------------------     protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        if (IsPostBack == false)        {            MyInts = new ObservableCollection<int>();            MyInts.CollectionChanged += CollectionChangedHandler;             Session["MyInts"] = MyInts;  // store for use between postbacks        }        else        {            MyInts = Session["MyInts"] as ObservableCollection<int>;        }    } Here's the event handler I hooked up to the ObservableCollection, it writes status strings to a ListBox. Note: The event handler fires in a different thread than the IIS process thread.     // ---- CollectionChangedHandler -----------------------------------    //    // Something changed in the Observable collection     public void CollectionChangedHandler(object sender, NotifyCollectionChangedEventArgs e)    {        // need to dig around to get the current page and control to write to:        // (because this is in a separate thread)        Page CurrentPage = System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Handler as Page;        ListBox LB = CurrentPage.FindControl("ListBoxHistory") as ListBox;         switch (e.Action)        {            case NotifyCollectionChangedAction.Add:                LB.Items.Add("Add: " + e.NewItems[0]);                               break;             case NotifyCollectionChangedAction.Remove:                LB.Items.Add("Remove: " + e.OldItems[0]);                break;             case NotifyCollectionChangedAction.Reset:                LB.Items.Add("Reset: ");                break;             default:                LB.Items.Add(e.Action.ToString());                break;                     }    }  Next, add some buttons and code to exercise the ObservableCollection:     <br />    <asp:Button ID="ButtonAdd" runat="server" Text="Add" OnClick="ButtonAdd_Click" />    <asp:Button ID="ButtonRemove" runat="server" Text="Remove" OnClick="ButtonRemove_Click" />    <asp:Button ID="ButtonReset" runat="server" Text="Reset" OnClick="ButtonReset_Click" />    <asp:Button ID="ButtonList" runat="server" Text="List" OnClick="ButtonList_Click" />    <br />    <asp:TextBox ID="TextBoxInt" runat="server" Width="51px"></asp:TextBox>    <br />    <asp:ListBox ID="ListBoxHistory" runat="server" Height="255px" Width="195px">    </asp:ListBox>    // ---- Add Button --------------------------------------     protected void ButtonAdd_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        int Temp;        if (int.TryParse(TextBoxInt.Text, out Temp) == true)            MyInts.Add(Temp);    }     // ---- Remove Button --------------------------------------     protected void ButtonRemove_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        int Temp;        if (int.TryParse(TextBoxInt.Text, out Temp) == true)            MyInts.Remove(Temp);    }     // ---- Button Reset -----------------------------------     protected void ButtonReset_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        MyInts.Clear();    }     // ---- Button List --------------------------------------     protected void ButtonList_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        ListBoxHistory.Items.Add("MyInts:");        foreach (int i in MyInts)        {            // a bit of tweaking to get the text to be indented            ListItem LI = new ListItem("&nbsp;&nbsp;" + i.ToString());            LI.Text = Server.HtmlDecode(LI.Text);            ListBoxHistory.Items.Add(LI);        }    } Here's what it looks like after entering some numbers and clicking some buttons: An interesting note is that I had to use: System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Response to write to a control on the page. As mentioned earlier, this implies that the notification event is in a thread separate from the IIS thread. Another interesting note: From the online help: Any public static (Shared in Visual Basic) members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe What does that mean to Asp.Net developers? If you are going to share an ObservableCollection among different sessions, you'd better make it a static object. I hope someone finds this useful. Steve Wellens

  • What is your definition of a programmer?

    - by Amir Rezaei
The definition of a programmer is not obvious. It has happened that I have asked questions in this forum where people believe it don’t belong here because it’s not programmer related. I thought this question may clarify the definition. What characteristics, roles and activities do you think defines a programmer? Is there a typical programmer? The technology changes so fast that it may be hard to be typical programmer. From wikipedia: A programmer, computer programmer or coder is someone who writes computer software. The term computer programmer can refer to a specialist in one area of computer programming or to a generalist who writes code for many kinds of software. One who practices or professes a formal approach to programming may also be known as a programmer analyst. A programmer's primary computer language (C, C++, Java, Lisp, Delphi etc.) is often prefixed to the above titles, and those who work in a web environment often prefix their titles with web. The term programmer can be used to refer to a software developer, software engineer, computer scientist, or software analyst. However, members of these professions typically possess other software engineering skills, beyond programming; for this reason, the term programmer is sometimes considered an insulting or derogatory oversimplification of these other professions. This has sparked much debate amongst developers, analysts, computer scientists, programmers, and outsiders who continue to be puzzled at the subtle differences in these occupations

Problems hosted on Kaggle has varying complexity to accomodate newbies to rock star developers – few problems are good enough for  newbies to learn basics of machine learning and few of them challenge the best of machine learning developers. I’m learning basics of machine learning for the past few weeks and had an opportunity to solve Kaggel’s Bike Sharing Demand problem. Bike Sharing systems allows customers to rent a bike (or a cycle as it is called in many part of the world) for several hours and return them back . The problem provides historical information about the demand for bike sharing business and we need to forecast the demand. For more information on the problem, visit Kaggle.com website. Here is the solution I written using random forests algorithm using R programming language and you can download the source code from github.  With this solution I was able to score RMSLE of 0.70117, which placed me somewhere in the mid of the leader board.  This is the best score I could get by spending 4 hours of my time. Please feel free to fork the code and improve it.   Get Kaggle Bike Sharing Demand solution code from GitHub

  • Win a Free License for Windows 7 Ultimate or Silverlight Spy at Our West Palm Beach .Net User Group

    - by Sam Abraham
Shervin Shakibi, Microsoft Regional Director, ASP.Net MVP and Microsoft Certified Trainer will be our speaker at our West Palm Beach .Net User Group May meeting,  Shervin founded the FlaDotNet Users Group Network to which our West Palm Beach .Net User Group belongs. Shervin will be talking to us about the new features of Silverlight 4.0. I am personally looking forward to attending this event as I have always found Shervin's talks fun and a great learning experience.   At the end of our meeting, we will be having a free raffle. We will be giving away 1 free Windows 7 Ultimate license and 2 free Silverlight Spy licenses as well as several books and other giveaways. Usually, everybody goes home with a freebie.  We will also continue having ample networking time while enjoying free pizza/soda sponsored by Sherlock Technology and SISCO Corporation who is a new sponsor of our group.   Koen Zwikstra, Silverlight MVP and Founder of First Floor Software has kindly offered the West Palm Beach .Net User Group several free licenses of Silverlight Spy to raffle during our meetings. We will start by raffling two copies during our May meeting.   Silverlight Spy is a very valuable tool in debugging Silverlight applications. It has been mentioned at MIX10 ( http://firstfloorsoftware.com/blog/silverlight-spy-at-mix10/) as well as by Microsoft Community Leaders (http://blogs.msdn.com/chkoenig/archive/2008/08/29/silverlight-spy.aspx)   I am using Silverlight Spy myself and will probably be using it to demonstrate Silverlight internals during my talks. I think Koen's gift to our group will bring great value to our fortunate members who end up winning the licenses. Thank you Koen for your kind gift and looking forward to meeting you all on May 25th 2010 6:30 PM at CompTec (http://www.fladotnet.com/Reg.aspx?EventID=462)   Sam Abraham Site Director - West Palm Beach .Net User Group

  • Function currying in Javascript

    - by kerry
Do you catch yourself doing something like this often? 1: Ajax.request('/my/url', {'myParam': paramVal}, function() { myCallback(paramVal); }); Creating a function which calls another function asynchronously is a bad idea because the value of paramVal may change before it is called.  Enter the curry function: 1: Function.prototype.curry = function(scope) { 2: var args = []; 3: for (var i=1, len = arguments.length; i < len; ++i) { 4: args.push(arguments[i]); 5: } 6: var m = this; 7: return function() { 8: m.apply(scope, args); 9: }; 10: } This function creates a wrapper around the function and ‘locks in’ the method parameters.  The first parameter is the scope of the function call (usually this or window).  Any remaining parameters will be passed to the method call.  Using the curry method the above call changes to: 1: Ajax.request('/my/url', {'myParam': paramVal}, myCallback.curry(window, paramVal)); Remember when passing objects to the curry method that the objects members may still change.

  • Deploying a SharePoint 2007 theme using Features

    - by Kelly Jones
I recently had a requirement to update the branding on an existing Windows SharePoint Services (WSS version 3.0) site.  I needed to update the theme, along with the master page.  An additional requirement is that my client likes to have all changes bundled up in SharePoint solutions.  This makes it much easier to move code from dev to test to prod and more importantly, makes it easier to undo code migrations if any issues would arise (I agree with this approach). Updating the theme was easy enough.  I created a new theme, along with a two new features.  The first feature, scoped at the farm level, deploys the theme, adding it to the spthemes.xml file (in the 12 hive –> \Template\layouts\1033 folder).  Here’s the method that I call from the feature activated event: private static void AddThemeToSpThemes(string id, string name, string description, string thumbnail, string preview, SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties) { XmlDocument spThemes = new XmlDocument(); //use GetGenericSetupPath to find the 12 hive folder string spThemesPath = SPUtility.GetGenericSetupPath(@"TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033\spThemes.xml"); //load the spthemes file into our xmldocument, since it is just xml spThemes.Load(spThemesPath); XmlNode root = spThemes.DocumentElement; //search the themes file to see if our theme is already added bool found = false; foreach (XmlNode node in root.ChildNodes) { foreach (XmlNode prop in node.ChildNodes) { if (prop.Name.Equals("TemplateID")) { if (prop.InnerText.Equals(id)) { found = true; break; } } } if (found) { break; } } if (!found) //theme not found, so add it { //This is what we need to add: // <Templates> // <TemplateID>ThemeName</TemplateID> // <DisplayName>Theme Display Name</DisplayName> // <Description>My theme description</Description> // <Thumbnail>images/mythemethumb.gif</Thumbnail> // <Preview>images/mythemepreview.gif</Preview> // </Templates> StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); sb.Append("<Templates><TemplateID>"); sb.Append(id); sb.Append("</TemplateID><DisplayName>"); sb.Append(name); sb.Append("</DisplayName><Description>"); sb.Append(description); sb.Append("</Description><Thumbnail>"); sb.Append(thumbnail); sb.Append("</Thumbnail><Preview>"); sb.Append(preview); sb.Append("</Preview></Templates>"); root.CreateNavigator().AppendChild(sb.ToString()); spThemes.Save(spThemesPath); } } Just as important, is the code that removes the theme when the feature is deactivated: private static void RemoveThemeFromSpThemes(string id) { XmlDocument spThemes = new XmlDocument(); string spThemesPath = HostingEnvironment.MapPath("/_layouts/") + @"1033\spThemes.xml"; spThemes.Load(spThemesPath); XmlNode root = spThemes.DocumentElement; foreach (XmlNode node in root.ChildNodes) { foreach (XmlNode prop in node.ChildNodes) { if (prop.Name.Equals("TemplateID")) { if (prop.InnerText.Equals(id)) { root.RemoveChild(node); spThemes.Save(spThemesPath); break; } } } } } So, that takes care of deploying the theme.  In order to apply the theme to the web, my activate feature method looks like this: public override void FeatureDeactivating(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties) { using (SPWeb curweb = (SPWeb)properties.Feature.Parent) { curweb.ApplyTheme("myThemeName"); curweb.Update(); } } Deactivating is just as simple: public override void FeatureDeactivating(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties) { using (SPWeb curweb = (SPWeb)properties.Feature.Parent) { curweb.ApplyTheme("none"); curweb.Update(); } } Ok, that’s the code necessary to deploy, apply, un-apply, and retract the theme.  Also, the solution (WSP file) contains the actual theme files. SO, next is the master page, which I’ll cover in my next blog post.

  • Join Me at JavaOne!

    - by HecklerMark
JavaOne 2012 is less than a week away! If you've already made plans to be there, you're probably getting pretty excited about it already...and if not, what are you waiting for?!? Before I get to the session information, I want to point out that qualified students get free admission to JavaOne, so if you are (or know) a CS or IT (or other tech-leaning) student who might like to attend, follow the link and start making plans. There is so much there to learn and experience. I'm happy to say I'll be a small part of the festivities. I'll be leading the following session: CON3519 - Building Hybrid Cloud Apps: Local Databases + The Cloud = Extreme Versatility In this session, learn how to design and develop applications that leverage both local storage and the cloud, maximizing the strengths of each. Using NetBeans, JavaServer Faces 2.0, GlassFish Server technology, JavaFX 2, Oracle Database, and Evernote, rapidly create prototypical applications that can be deployed in various environments and scaled up/out with enterprise cloud solutions.  As a contributor to the JFXtras project, I also hope to attend the following "Birds Of a Feather" (BOF) session led by Gerrit Grunwald and Stephen Chin: BOF5503 - JFXtras Super Happy Dev BOF JFXtras, the open source JavaFX control and extensions project, is back for JavaFX 2.0. In this session, you will learn about the latest changes in JFXtras 2.0, including new components, controls, and features that integrate with the JavaFX 2.0 libraries. Expect to meet the JFXtras core team members as well as other interesting client RIA implementers and developers. Now that JavaFX is coded in Java, a few server-side hackers may even be let in the door. If you're there, please stop by and introduce yourself! And to follow along with my J1 travels or keep in contact afterward, please follow me on Twitter or connect via G+ or Facebook (links in panel to right). Hope to see you there, but either way, keep the Java flowing! All the best,Mark

  • Bookbindng Samples

    - by Tim Dexter
I have finally found a home for the bookbinding samples I have put together in support of my white paper on Bookbinding. OTN has a great newish sample code site where you can create code samples to share with the community. In their own words: Welcome to the Oracle Sample Code public repository, where Oracle Technology Network members collaboratively build and share sample applications, code snippets, skins and templates, and more. Note the word 'templates' I read that as an open invitation to share your latest and greatest! If you have template samples or code snippets that you think would benefit the wider BIP community please create new code samples and let me know the link and I'll ensure they get promotion through the blog. https://www.samplecode.oracle.com/ You just need an OTN account to get started. I'll be pushing some more samples and snippets in the near future, its a great centrally managed repository. Finally, Oracle has somewhere to get code and files hosted. The two samples I have created cover the book bindng function from a couple of angles: S523: Oracle BI Publisher Bookbinding Examples - this walks you through a series of examples that show you how to create the bookbinding control files to generate the final bound document. S522: Oracle BI Publisher Bookbinding Demonstration - this is a sample J2EE application that demonstrates how to create an HTML/servlet combination to allow users to make sub document selections and then the document features e.g. TOC, page numbering, cross links, etc you would like added to the final document I'd be very interested in any feedback. Happy Binding!
