• Changing Windows 'hosts' file in guest OS under Parallels Desktop 6

  Hi all, I am running Win7 in a Parallels Desktop 6 on Mac. I would like to modify my Windows hosts file. When doing this through notepad it says "You don't have permission to save in this location..." I am logged on as a regular windows user - not as 'local admin'. How can I edit the file? How can I grant my regular user 'local admin' rights? How can change the Windows user to 'admin' ... this option seems to be missing in my windows install... Does anybody recognize the issue? • How to highlight full row in GNU screen

  I have a mac pro and now I am trying to use GNU screen instead of terminal. When I need to look at the log the I hit Ctrl A [ and I get into copy mode. However it is really hard to detect where my cursor is since it is of color red and it is underscore. Is it possible to get the cursor in a block form in copy mode. Or highlight the whole row. Any stronger visual indication of where my cursor is in copy mode would be of help. Thanks

  I started using this new text editor called Kod (runs on Mac OS 10.6): http://kodapp.com/ It's very very fast, I'm a poor programmer and I don't have money to pay for TextMate, this might be the closest to TextMate that I've used. (TextMate cost around $50). The problem is.... Where is the preferences window? Where can I set the font size? I need to make it bigger, that's it... Does anyone know how to do that?   I'm always reading English, but I'm a Spanish native speaker (I'm working on my thesis). Sometimes I need to translate a word into Spanish, and what I do now is to open a new tab and go to Google Translate and then put the word into the input field. Just a quick translation, one word or a small phrase. I'm a Mac and Firefox user. Is there a better way to achieve this? I was thinking that maybe a dashboard widget would do the trick and I was looking for one. The other option is to install the Google Toolbar, but I really hate toolbars. I don't know, a good Firefox extension maybe?

• Ubuntu 10.10: 2nd instance of Firefox does not obey GTK2 customizations

  Hi On Ubuntu 10.10 I started a 2nd instance of Firefox using the command: $ firefox -ProfileManager -no-remote & Created a new profile and everything works smoothly except for the fact that this instance of FF does not obey by GTK2 customizations that I have placed in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 Moreover, only SOME of the customizations are not obeyed. For example, the vertical scrollbars are supposed to be on the left, but they are on the right. The scrollbar arrows are together (Mac-like) as specified, so is the scrollbar width. The first instance obeys all customizations with scrollbars on the left. Any ideas?

• Update server version for postgres 9.1.2

  I'm trying to run a postgis sql script and I'm running into the following error. Am I correct to say that updating my server version will fix it? If so, how can I go about updating it? I'm on Mac OSX Lion and installed Postgres via brew. Apparently I have an older version installed which is 9.1.2 but installing postgis installed postgres 9.2.1 on to my system. • How can I copy the output from a remote command into the local clipboard?

  I use iTerm2 as my terminal client in Mac OS X. On the local system I can use pbcopy and pbpaste to transfer data between the system clipboard and the terminal, but of course this doesn't work when you're ssh'ed to another machine. Is there some way which I can take the result of a command and copy it to the clipboard automatically? Perhaps an applescript to grab the text on the iTerm windows, then get the next to last line? For instance, if I wanted to copy the current working directory: I run pwd, then use the mouse to select the text, and then press command + c. Is there any better / faster / automatic way of doing this? I'm not looking for a bulletproof solution that would work for every command (eg: might not work when there is a huge scrollback) - I'm just looking for something to make this task that I do quite often a little less tedious. Update I'm looking into using screen to do this, but I'm still not sure if it is possible.

• Windows 7 connect to Lion file sharing

  Trying to access my Mac from a Windows 7 computer, I fail with the infamous error 86 incorrect password. Now this appears to be a well-known problem with countless threads on the internet giving as many "solutions" as there are discussion threads about it (mostly ranging from installing third-party commercial samba servers, to switching to some other protocol, to compiling a plain-vanilla Samba installation - the latter which I will probably do when I give up this :) ) I am stubborn, and I believe there must be some problem here that can be solved or worked around, but there is surprisingly little detail about this problem. It appears to have something to do with a mismatch of authentication methods. • Is it possible to code on two different computers simultaneously?

  I want to work with another programmer and I want the source code to be live in real-time on both of our screens. Is this possible on the Mac OS x or Linux? We're going to be using OS X but occasionally we might need to add an Ubuntu computer too. Is there a way I can do this using ssh, any shell based program, or even a good GUI? I thought Coda might be capable of this but it's not really working. Anyone ever do this? I'm not look for a git/svn/or any other version control system. This is more of a live coding session. :)

• Set resolution of unattached display in OS X?

  I have an HDTV that I'm hooking up via DVI to HDMI from my Mac mini. In my struggle to eliminate overscan I managed to set the screen resolution to something not supported by the tv. How do I change the resolution without that screen attached? Specifically my tv says it's "720p and 1366 x 768 Resolution". The 720p resolution option in OS X made for a ton of overscan (couldn't see menubar or dock at all). So I tried something x 768 and managed to shoot myself in the foot with an unsupported resolution. I thought it was okay to experiment since a resolution change times out if you don't accept it. Apparently that didn't happen for some reason. I've already deleted the com.apple.windowserver.plist in /Library/Preferences as I saw suggested in other places, with no effect.

  Hi, We have purchased an unmanaged VPS windows hosting solution from one of the UK based companies. We have Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition. We need to install certain third party applications on that server. Unfortunatelly, one of the applications requires a MAC address to be present at all times - this is their way of making sure that software is not pirated (which it isn't). We have tried installing a virtual loopback network card, but this has brought the server down - i.e. we couldn't connect using remote desktop any longer. At the moment we are limited with what we can try. This is an unmanaged solution, therefore any support including restarts is rather costly. Are you aware of any low-risk solutions? Thank you

Even with a monospaced font, I find the TextBox feature to be difficult in terms of formatting. Crazy Bob has an article on how he handled it in 2004 (he creates PDFs from the code samples and then includes those). However, I would like to know if there have been any changes since then. • Cisco 2911 - problem with DHCP

  Hi, i am configuring DHCP daemon on Cisco 2911. At some point i assigned address 192.168.50.50 to one box (using MAC address 'relation'). When I wanted to saved config - I got warning, that address 192.168.50.50 is already in Pool, which sounds bit weird - it was first host which I started configuring. I tried with following commands: clear ip dhcp server statistics clear ip dhcp conflict but first one doesn't output anything (and show statistics shows that there are 2 addresses in pool), and second one throws "there is no conflicted ips" message. How I can force/purge/clear/allow to bind 192.168.50.50 to this box?

• What's the simplest way to get .flac music files into iTunes?

  I'm looking for a simple way to import .flac files into iTunes, so I can play them on my mac, and when I'm out, my iPhone, and I'm willing to be I'm not the first person to want to do this. What are the best tools for doing this? The quality of the music is useful, but truth be told, the speakers I'd play them on are so crappy that a lot of the sound quality in the .flac format would be lost anyway, so I'm not averse to converting to mp3 files. If it helps give any context, I'm using a Macbook with OS 10.5 Leopard, and iTunes 9, connected to a 16gb iPhone with standard apple headphones, which is sometimes plugged into Bose SoundDock for music, and the music files are piano performances.   We are trying to set up remote access to a computer that houses a server fro a particular program we are running. The program says we need to configure the office router. In the firewall settings it says to open ports 5345-5351 (TCP only). Port Forwarding: You will also need to forward the same range of ports (5345-5351) to the computer running the Server. This typically requires that the computer running the Server be assigned a static IP on the local network. Having trouble figuring out which IP address we actually need to be using on the client side of this program in order to access the server computer. Can someone walk through this process?? We are working on Mac OSX 10.5. Thank you in advance!

  We're looking for a good office jukebox solution where staff can select songs via a web interface to be played over the central set of speakers. Must haves: Web Interface RSS / easy to scrap display of currently playing songs Ability to play mp3s and manage an ordered playlist. Good cataloguing of media. Multiple OSs supported as clients - Windows, Mac, Fedora Linux (will probably be accomplished by virtue of a web interface). We have tried XBMC which worked well as a proof of concept however the web interface is just too immature and has too many bugs for a reliable multi-user solution. I believe the same will be true of boxee. Nice to have: Ability to play music videos onto a monitor Ability to listen to radio streams specifically Shoutcast and the BBC. Ability to run on Linux is a nice to have but windows solutions which worked well would certainly be considered. I am aware of question 61404 and don't believe this to be a duplicate due to the specific requirements.

• How does pptpd (poptop) or pppd work with eap-tls and mppe-128?

  To create a VPN I've installed pptpd on an Ubuntu domU (Debian domUs can also be created). MSCHAPv2 isn't a very strong authentication protocol so I'd like to use EAP-TLS. I've set up a FreeRADIUS server and certificates for EAP-TLS before (for use with WPA), and I've also set up a pptp server with mschap-v2 auth, but I can't figure out how to combine the two. Maybe pppd can use EAP-TLS on its own, but I can't find support for it in the Ubuntu package. If I need to patch the package, that's fine, I know how to patch Debian packages (provided the patch applies cleanly). Also, can MPPE still be used when pppd is configured to use EAP? Because it says in the manual several times that MPPE requires MSCHAP. However, other docs like this one: http://www.nikhef.nl/~janjust/ppp/ seem to refute that. The clients are running Mac OS X Leopard and GNU/Linux, there's no need to fix anything for Windows.

• HP Media Smart remote access

  I just purchased this box for home backups for my pc's and mac's. Everything works great accept for the remote access part. I can RD into the machine locally but I can't get to it from outside of my network. I've enabled port forwarding on my router but it doesn't seem to matter. I checked with Qwest and they don't block these ports so I'm at a loss. I do have Vonage in front of my router but I've taken it out and it didn't make a difference. I suspect I've made an error with my router setup. I'm a programmer and I'm playing in the world of the unknown here. I'm lost. Any suggestions?

• Help accessing Beagle over serial with Minicom/GTKTerm

  I am trying to access a brand new Beagle Board from Ubuntu or Mac over serial using the setup seen here: http://specialcomp.com/beagleboard/RevC1.htm I got Minicom and GTKTerm installed on the Ubuntu box. I set up the correct baud rate, turned off flow control, and have tried ttyUSB0 and ttyS0. Once minicom is configured properly, I should just see the init text from the board appear if I have minicom open in terminal while I plug in the board, correct? dmesg shows ttyUSB0 on the computer has been connected to ttyS0 on the beagle.

• How can I use mobile network account at server so home sync works

  I would like to be able to use a mobile network account while sitting at my server. I had os x server 10.6 running on a mac mini server but recently got a new quad core iMac and want to take advantage of the extra power. My problem - I can sit at the server and log into the mobile network account but can not get it to sync back. When I attempt to sync it get error message that the afp share point is unavailable and that the files are hosted locally. My goal is to be able to use the new iMac as the server and set a user account so that it remains synced so when the account is accessed from other clients, particularly my macbook pro. Is mobile account the best route? Would an external account be a better option. Any advice or ideas of where to read up on this would be much appreciated.

• Preventing SSH RSA host key warnings for change of key vs IP address

  I have a network with DHCP enabled, and also a computer that dual boots operating systems and has different SSH keys on each (and yes, I would like to keep different keys on each rather than copying the same identity/private key to each). Because the IP address does not change between operating systems because the MAC address is the same, when connecting to ssh, even when not using the IP address but the hostname via DNS/mDNS, I get the warning: Warning: the RSA host key for 'hostname' differs from the key for the IP address '192.168.1.172' Offending key for IP in /Users/user/.ssh/known_hosts:37 Matching host key in /Users/user/.ssh/known_hosts:38 Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? How can I surpress the warning when the hostname differs from the IP address for that hostname, but retain the ability to check host keys are the same for each hostname? (each OS has a unique hostname)

• How to share my localhost over the internet?

  I really want to share my localhost over the internet to show my friends the progress of the website we're working on, so that I don't need to upload it to the public server each time I make a change. showoff.io is not free and localtunnel gives me "failed to authenticate" when trying to upload my public key (a lot of people seem to have this problem and there doesn't seem to be a solution for this). Does anyone know any other free service I can use or any other solution at all? I'm using a Mac. Thanks. UPDATE: with localhost I mean a web server running on my computer, I have a dynamic IP address and no I'm not behind a router (just using a wireless modem).
