• Alternatives to the GPL

  I made a game, and I am currently making a game engine. I want them both to be completely free and open source. What license should I choose? I was reading a bit on GPL, but that seems to be more suited for system code and libraries, AFAIK, as it doesn't permit the use of code for proprietorial software - which, in turn, implies that the code can be used in the first place. I can see that, obviously, game engines can be considered libraries, and therefor be used, but what about game code? Is there an alternative to GPL?

• Why is it so hard to get people to pay for software?

  Where I come from software is considered something you can get for free (same goes for movies, etc.) The willingness not to pay for software is quite strong. It is putting me off, that people would rather go through hoops and risk legal issues than to pay a small amount of money for a piece of software. This attitude is somehow embedded in the society. I'm just trying to understand the situation. What do you think is causing this? Why won't some people pay for software even if it's cheap and they use it every day?

• Is having your own website important?

  How necessary or important is it? I try to keep a running list of blogs or sites to follow, but a lot of the time I pull up someone's profile and notice there isn't anything there. Is it really important? I understand are different levels of programming (from C/C++ system programmers to Rails and even Haskell and J) and not everyone works in a language easily worked with for web based applications. Not everything is web-centric, however with the advent of many popular and sometimes free services I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a majority of programmers to have a personal site.

• Recommendations for a quick and easy discussion forum installation

  Hello. I did a couple quick searches on this topic and both Google and this site yielded poor results, but I was wondering what's the quickest way to setup a discussion forum on my website. Preferably one that has a decent Admin dashboard. My website is very static (e.g. it has one index.html, a stylesheet, and a javascript) and it will most likely be hosted on GoDaddy.com. The last time I installed a discussion forum was six years ago and it was phpBB. I'm sure that's still an option, but I'm (hoping) wondering if there are better, free, and as-easy alternatives to phpBB. Thanks for your wisdom!

• Windows Server Connected to Domain Without Being Domain Controller

  Can a Windows Server be connected to an Active Directory domain without being a domain controller? Here's the scenario: I want to use Windows Server 2012 to run several virtual machines for testing our web application in a variety of environments. We have a corporate domain, and I'd like to use the corporate login (or at least a common login) on each of the virtual machines without necessarily having to get IT to set up each virtual machine on the corporate domain. Also, I need the server itself to be able to authenticate domain logins (the app uses domain login information for users to login). However, I absolutely do NOT want it to be a DC on the corporate network. Thus, my questions: Can a Windows Server be connected to an Active Directory domain without being a DC? Can a Windows Server authenticate users on another domain without being a part of that domain? Can a Windows Server be a domain controller in a small network (comprised of just the server and itself) and use the corporate domain's Active Directory for authenticating user logins to the server, the web app, and the virtual machines?

• novice user...firewall

  I've recently ditched windows 7 for Ubuntu 11.10 64bit... I'm a total novice and was wondering do I need to make any changes to the firewall?. I read somewhere that the built in firewall doesn't need touching...but a friend says he uses firestarter,I'd be really grateful if someone could advise me weather to just leave well alone or if I should make certain changes,I'll be doing a lot of web browsing and also proberly a bit of online banking to. Infact this is one of the reasons I've switched to Linux as I was told its much more secure than windows... I just want my comp to be setup in a way that I can access my bank account safely and not knowing what to do about the firewall or how to configure it is off putting... Also do I need an antivirus?..I know bitdefender and eset do a free Linux scanner but again I've heard there not really needed. • Architecture for html5 multiplayer game?

  Hello I want to write a HTML5 multiplayer game in which there are rooms with two players answering a series of questions with 3 possible answers, 10sec/question, which are being downloaded from a server. It will have some ratings and so on. I want to make it as scalable as possible. I wonder what technologies to use to accomplish that. HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript obviously. But what about the server-side? I have been researching and found that Socket.IO + Node.js + mongoDB would do the job but after doing some more research it maybe not. Can you suggest me some kind of architecture for doing this game? Free technologies, if possible. Or what to read and from where to start in order to understand how to do it. Thanx in advance! P.S. I have an experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, C#, ASP.NET MVC and relational db's.

I will learn more about python through Udacity and books online. After I learn python, what will I need to learn next to build a site? I want to build an interactive photo site. I will have to learn HTML. Do any of you know a good book or web site to learn HTML? I need to learn how to have python in HTML. • My first Windows Phone 7 application is live &ndash; from zero to submitted in 5 hours

  Tuesday evening I found myself minus family. I decided to use the time to “have a crack at this Silverlight Phone 7 stuff”. From zero (no experience, no tools installed, no membership on the AppHub) to submitted for approval took me from 8pm to 1am – with the last hour messing around with png files in Paint to complete the submission process! Two days later on Thursday it was approved and is now in the marketplace for you to install - or not :-) The application is very simple but it works and looks “finished” – and importantly I learnt a lot about what is involved and the power of our tooling to make this pretty easy to get going. Go on, give it a go by popping over to the App Hub. You do need to pay $99 to join the App Hub to publish but you can start by downloading the free tools and just work with the included emulator. • How to setup whole-disk encryption with dual boot on a MacBook Pro (generation 9,2 with 12.04)

  I can install Ubuntu 12.04 on the MacBook when using the "noapic" kernel boot option, using the alternate amd64+mac image (from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ ). But after installation the screen turn sblack after trying to boot "Windows" (as named in the boot menu that shows up when holding Option/Alt during startup). I want to use whole-disk encryption and given that only one free partition is available, I have setup LVM to do so: - vg0 contains bootlv and cryptlv - in cryptlv I have setup encryption with another LVM volume group (vg1, which holds swaplv, rootlv and homelv) I have not installed Grub during installation (because I was not sure about the partition) and when trying to install it later on /dev/sda4 (which contains the outer LVM) it complained that it could not determine the file system, and --force did not help either. The black screen / behavior looks similar to starting the installer without enabling the noapic option.

• Is there any way to tweak / rotate mouse orientation? Any applications? Registry edits?

  I've got a very frustrating issue with my new Logitech Marathon Mouse M705. It is absolutely perfect for what I need, with the exception that it tracks on an angle for some reason. What I mean is when you slide the cursor to the left, it trends upward - when you slide to the right, it trends down. Moving the cursor along a flat horizontal line is no longer a natural motion - you need to fight what I suspect is a mechanical error of some kind. Unfortunately, I've already exchanged this mouse once and tested both on different Windows 7 and Mac OS X machines - the problem continues to occur. Is there a software solution for me? I'm incredibly surprised there is no simple way to adjust the orientation... how can every mouse manufacturer possibly adjust their hardware to track to everyone's tastes? What about those who need to flip orientation a full 90 or 180 degrees? I only need to adjust mine a few degrees, but I'm sure that need has arisen as well. Anyway, I'm running the latest SetPoint drivers (6.00) on Windows 7 and there are no orientation options available. I've checked out uberOptions and the M705 isn't supported yet (with the last version update over 6 months ago). MAF Mouse instructions are a very strange series of mouse clicks to activate. This app also seems a little overkill and costs $$ (which I'm willing to pay as a last resort). Is there no universal registry value for mouse orientation? How about for SetPoint drivers specifically? I've done a simple search in regedit without any luck. An XML file somewhere? Anything?

Specifically, what I want it to wrap in a C++ API: Simple GUI system 2D Graphics User touch input and accelerometer Networking (UDP sockets) What I'm trying to do is port a multiplayer game to the iOS. I've seen cocos2d-x, but I don't know how stable it is and I don't think it supports networking. Oh, and I want it to be free and open source if possible. • Cannot Connect To VMWare Guest OS Using NEither RDP Nor

  Hi, I have a PC (Windows XP SP3) with VMWare Workstation 7 installed. The VMWare hosts Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. RealVNC (4.1.3) is installed on both OS'es. Both of them use Hamachi2. Host OS (WinXP) also runs ZoneAlarm Firewall. Hamachi network is set as trusted. My goal is to allow RDP and VNC connections to be made to the guest OS (Windows Server 2003). Both options work absolutely fine if I connect from the host OS. However I have problems when other computers from our Hamachi network try to connect the guest OS (Win2K3). 1) RDP connections. RDP window opens, shows black content and after 15-20 seconds displays following error: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_yQhsRRimgKU/TArRrtiteQI/AAAAAAAABZA/e96za-y9wzo/rdp_error.JPG 2) RealVCN connections. Users are able to connect but all they see is a black screen inside VNC window. At the same their input (keystrokes or mouse moves/clicks) are visible when looking at the console window of the Win2K3. I really appreciate any ideas on how to resolve mentioned problems.
