  I have a little problem: the Winform control (that contains between others WPF) suddenly stopped to be displayed in Designer. Message: Events cannot be set on the object passed to the event binding service because a site associated with the object could not be located. • How do you load and save content from a Silverlight 4 RichTextBox control?

  I've been reviewing the features of the RichTextBox control in Silverlight 4. What I've yet to find is any examples of Loading and Saving content in the RichTextBox. Anyone come across any or can shed some light on it? The control has a BlocksCollection in which I guess one could use the XamlReader to load a bunch of markup assuming that markup has a single top level node of type Block. Then add that block to the Blocks collection. Seems a shame that the RichTextBox bothers to have a "collection" in this case, why not simply a top-level Block item? Never-the-less that still leaves saving the content of a RichTextBox, I have no idea where to begin with that one? I'm sure I must be missing the obvious here but unless loading and saving data in to and from RichTextBox is at least possible if not easy I can't see how we can actually put it to use. Edit Thanks to DaveB's answer I found discussion of something called the DocumentPersister. However no reference to this class can be found in the MSDN documentation nor can I find it in the installed dlls via object browser search. Anyone, anyone at all?

• WPF derived ComboBox SelectedValuePath issue

  In our application we have a very large set of data that acts as our data dictionary for ComboBox lists, etc. This data is staticly cached and keyed off of 2 variables, so I thought it wise to write a control that derived from ComboBox and exposed the 2 keys as DPs. When those 2 keys have proper values I set the ItemsSource of the ComboBox automatically from the data dictionary list it corresponds to. I also automatically set the SelectedValuePath and DisplayMemberPath to Code and Description, respectively. Here's how an example of how an item in the ItemsSource from the data dictionary list always looks: public class DataDictionaryItem { public string Code { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public string Code3 { get { return this.Get.Substring(0, 3); } } } The value of Code is always 4 bytes long, but sometimes I only need to bind 3 bytes of it. Hence, the Code3 property. Here's how the code looks inside my custom combobox to set the ItemsSource: private static void SetItemsSource(CustomComboBox combo) { if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(combo.Key1) || string.IsNullOrEmpty(combo.Key2)) { combo.ItemsSource = null; return; } List<DataDictionaryItem> list = GetDataDictionaryList(combo.Key1, combo.Key2); combo.ItemsSource = list; } Now, my problem is, when I change the SelectedValuePath in the XAML to Code3, it doesn't work. Can anyone see what I need to do to get my custom combobox to wake up and use the SelectedValuePath provided if it's overridden in the XAML? Tweaking the value in the property setter in my SelectedValue bound business object is not an option.

  I'm using RabbitMQ on RHEL 5.3 using the Java client. I have 2 nodes (machines). Node1 is consuming messages from a queue on Node2 using the Java helper class QueueingConsumer. QueueingConsumer consumer = new QueueingConsumer(channel); channel.basicConsume("MyQueueOnNode2", noAck, consumer); while (true) { QueueingConsumer.Delivery delivery = consumer.nextDelivery(); ... Process message - delivery.getBody() } If the interface is brought down on Node1 or Node2 (e.g. ifconfig eth1 down), the client (above) never knows the network isn't there anymore. Does RabbitMQ provide some type of configuration on the Java client that can be used to determine if the connection has gone away. Shutting down the RabbitMQ server on Node2 will trigger a ShutdownSignalException, which can be caught and the app can go into a reconnect loop. But bringing down the interface doesn't cause any type of exception to happen, so the code will be waiting forever on consumer.nextDelivery(). I've also tried using the timeout version of this call. e.g. QueueingConsumer consumer = new QueueingConsumer(channel); channel.basicConsume("MyQueueOnNode2", noAck, consumer); int timeout_ms = 30000; while (true) { QueueingConsumer.Delivery delivery = consumer.nextDelivery(timeout_ms); if (delivery == null) { if (channel.isOpen() == false) // Seems to always return true { throw new ShutdownSignalException(); } } else { ... Process message - delivery.getBody() } } but appears that this always returns true (even though the interface is down). I assume registering for the ShutdownListener on the connection will yield the same results, but haven't tried that yet. Is there a way to configure some sort of heartbeat, or do you just have to write custom lease logic (e.g. "I'm here now") in order to get this to work?

  I'm using DataAnnotations attributes to validate my model objects. For each user they enter, there's a client script coupled with ajax that creates an <input type="hidden" name="data.Editors[0].Id" value="userId" /> for each user entered (enumeration index is therefore not always 0 as written here), so default model binder is able to consume and bind the form without any problems. a text box where users enter the title Since I'm using Asp.net MVC 2 RTM which does model validation instead of input validation I don't know how to avoid validation errors. The thing is I have to use BindAttribute on my controller action. I would have to either provide a white or a black list of properties. It's always a better practice to provide a white list. It's also more future proof. The problem My form works fine, but I get validation errors about user's FullName and Email properties since they are not provided. I also shouldn't feed them to the client (via ajax when user enters user data), because email is personal contact data and is not shared between users. If there was just a single user reference on MyModel I would write [Bind(Include = "Title, Editor.Id")] But I have an enumeration of them. How do I provide Bind white list to work with my model?

  Hello. I have a simple app where the only view controller has an outlet to a UITabBar. It also implements UITabBarDelegate and is set as the delegate for the UITabBar: @interface TheMainViewController : UIViewController <UITabBarDelegate> { IBOutlet UITabBar *theTabBar; } I implemented the following method Which gets called whenever any of my 4 UITabBarItems get tapped. I tried just doing something really simple: - (void)tabBar:(UITabBar *)tabBar didSelectItem:(UITabBarItem *)item { tabBar.selectedItem = [tabBar.items objectAtIndex:0]; return; } In theory, it should always stay selected on my first tab and it works perfectly when I just tap any UITabBarItem (nothing happens, the first one always stays selected). But when I touch a UITabBarItem and hold it (not taking my finger off) the selection changes anyway ! Debugging, everything gets called properly. It's like changing the selectedItem property doesn't have any effect is the user still has the item "down" (with his finger on it). What would be a good workaround? I tried overloading UITabBar and messing with touchesBegan and touchesEnd but they don't even get called. Same with UITabBarItem. Oh and please don't suggest using a UITabBarController as it is not flexible enough for my application. So frustrating....thanks!

• UISearchBar in a UITableView

  I'm trying to mimic the behaviour of a table view like one in the iPod app for Artists - it's a sectioned table view with a section index on the right and with a search bar at the top, but initially hidden when view shown. I am using sdk 3.1.2 and IB, so simply dragged a UISearchDisplayController in to my NIB - it does wire everything up ready for searching. The problem starts because I'm adding the UISearchBar in to the first section of the UITableView, because if I understand correctly I must do this so I can jump to the search bar by touching the search icon in the section index directly? When the table view appears I see the search bar but it has resized and I now have a white block behind the section index at the top. It does'nt take the color of the UISearchBar's surround which interestingly is different to that shown in Interface Builder. Searching around, I did find a tip to add a small navigation bar and a UISearchBar in a UIView, then add this to the table view cell - this works.. BUT the color of the navigation bar's background is what you'd expect normally (gray), not the different color as noted above?! More interesting, if I click the search bar to start a search, then click Cancel, all is fixed!!! The background along the whole tableview cell when the search bar is, is the same!!?! • Embedded pdf object steals focus and will not let it go

  Hi guys, I was given the task of adding some usability to one of our applications, ie. make sure that every controll has a shortcut key, and that they can be reached by "tabbing" through the page. The gui runs in a IE. control on a winform, and consists of asp.net pages, so basically it is just asp.net always running in internet explorer. My problem is that one of the pages has an embeded pdf in it, like so: <object tabindex="-1" height="273" width="663" visible="false" type="Application/pdf" data="showpdf.ashx#navpanes=0"></object> showpdf.ashx is an httphandler, that streams the pdf contents to the response. It does not handle focus in any way. Now when I run this page, the pdf application steals focus, no matter what I do to set it to another control. And when it takes focus, I cannot take it back with the keyboard. Only a mouseclick on the page will set it to another control. I have tried to set focus in code behind OnPreRender, or in jevescript, but no luck. It seems that the http handler always runs after all the other code, and it sets focus on the pdf object. Any thought would be greatly appreciated.

• AS 400 Performance from .Net iSeries Provider

  Hey all, First off, I am not an AS 400 guy - at all. So please forgive me for asking any noobish questions here. Basically, I am working on a .Net application that needs to access the AS400 for some real-time data. Although I have the system working, I am getting very different performance results between queries. Typically, when I make the 1st request against a SPROC on the AS400, I am seeing ~ 14 seconds to get the full data set. After that initial call, any subsequent calls usually only take ~ 1 second to return. This performance improvement remains for ~ 20 mins or so before it takes 14 seconds again. The interesting part with this is that, if the stored procedure is executed directly on the iSeries Navigator, it always returns within milliseconds (no change in response time). I wonder if it is a caching / execution plan issue but I can only apply my SQL SERVER logic to the AS400, which is not always a match. Any suggestions on what I can do to recieve a more consistant response time or simply insight as to why the AS400 is acting in this manner when I was using the iSeries Data Provider for .Net? Is there a better access method that I should use? • Vbscript - Checking each subfolder for files and copy files

  I'm trying to get this script to work. It's basically supposed to mirror two sets of folders and make sure they are exactly the same. If a folder is missing, the folder and it's content should be copied. Then the script should compare the DateModified attribute and only copy the files if the source file is newer than the destination file. I'm trying to get together a script that does exactly that. And so far I've been able to check all subfolder if they exist and then create them if they don't. Then I've been able to scan the top source folder for it's files and copy them if they don't exist or if the DateModified attribute is newer on the source file. What remains is basically scanning each subfolder for its files and copy them if they don't exist or if the DateModified stamp is newer. • Errors with shotgun gem and msvcrt-ruby18.dll when running my Sinatra app

  Greetings, Every time I make a change to a Sinatra app I'm working on and try to refresh the browser (located at http://localhost:4567/) the browser will refresh and, the console window seems to restart the WEB brick server. The problem is that the content in the browser window does not change. A friend of mine told me it was a shotgun issue and referred me to rtomayko's shotgun gem: http://github.com/rtomayko/shotgun On this page I read that the shotgun gem would basically solve my problem, allowing the changes made to my app to show up in the browser window after I refresh it. So I installed the shotgun gem. The installation was successful. To activate the shotgun function you have to type shotgun before the file name. So on top of getting the error message above I also get a pop up window from Ruby.exe saying: Ruby.exe - Unable to load component This application has failed to start because msvcrt-ruby18.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. I have no idea what msvcrt-ruby18.dll is but I know that installing either shotgun and/or mongrel created this problem. Where to go from here?   Hi All, I'd really appreciate if someone could help me with a strange problem with Jquery.cycle. I've added jquery.cycle (verson 2.72) into a existing application (Prestashop) to slideshow a number of images. On Firefox, Mozilla etc it works brilliantly - on IE7 a bizarre problem occurs. The problem is where I have a and say 6 pictures a couple of to break things up then another content and IE includes the "editorial" into the slideshow. The "editorial" block is removed from the page, and appears as the last slide in the slideshow, located in the top left corner. Additional facts: jquery-1.2.6 is in use for the rest of the application (I've tried to upgrade it and all I get is the same behaviour with lots of other things breaking). • Add inset box-shadow on Google Maps element

  I am willing to add some inset box-shadow to a tag that is containing a Google Maps element. However, it seems nothing happens, probably because Google loads some other div's in the original element, hence covering the generated box-shadow. How can I achieve this effect? • JavaScript - Settting property on Object in Image load function, property not set once outside funct

  Sometimes JavaScript doesn't make sense to me, consider the following code that generates a photo mosaic based on x/y tiles. And I can ensure you that this function DOES get called because I've placed an alert() call inside it. Right now it's just stuck inside an infinite loop calling tryDisplayMosaic() constantly. Also if I place a loop just before tryDisplayMosaic() is called, and in that loop I set .Done = true, then .Done property is true and alert('All images downloaded'); will get called.

• WPF and canvas overlay

  I have a grid which represents some data, and i need a canvas to overlay on top of it to layout some lines. The canvas is inside it's own usercontrol The problem is that the canvas and it's contents should autoresize when the grid resizes width and height. I added the canvas inside a viewbox, but it didn't do the trick. When the grid resizes, the canvas doesn't. The purpose of the canvas is to overlay a ruler-like functionality on top of the grid. I cannot use a style on the grid to replace the canvas, because the grid is showing different information than the canvas does. • Synchronize the position of two ScrollView views

  I am trying to synchronize the positions of two ScrollViews. I'm trying to do this to display a tv guide listing. I have created a custom class that extends RelativeLayout to display the guide. This relative layout has four children: an imageview in the top left corner, a HorizontalScrollView to display the column headers in the top right, a ScrollView to display the row headers at the bottom left, and a ScrollView in the bottom right that contains the listings. This ScrollView then contains a HorizontalScrollView, which in turn contains a LinearLayout with multiple child views that display the data. I hope this explains it clearly, but here's a diagram to make it clearer: ____________ |__|___hsv___| | | | | | sv -> | | | hsv -> | |sv| ll -> | | | etc | | | | |__|_________| I set it up like this because I wanted the guide listings to scroll both horizontally and vertically, but there's no scroll view that does this. Also, I want the row and column headers to display no matter what position the guide listings are at, but I want them to be lined up properly. So I'm trying to find a way to synchronize the positions of the two hsv's, and to also synchronize the positions of the two sv's. I'm also trying to do it in a way that avoids just running a handler every few milliseconds to poll one view and call scrollTo on the other. I'm in no way sure that this is the best way to do it, but this is what I've come up with. If anybody has any other suggestions, please feel free!

• Matplotlib pick event order for overlapping artists

  I'm hitting a very strange issue with matplotlib pick events. I have two artists that are both pickable and are non-overlapping to begin with ("holes" and "pegs"). When I pick one of them, during the event handling I move the other one to where I just clicked (moving a "peg" into the "hole"). Then, without doing anything else, a pick event from the moved artist (the peg) is generated even though it wasn't there when the first event was generated. My only explanation for it is that somehow the event manager is still moving through artist layers when the event is processed, and therefore hits the second artist after it is moved under the cursor. So then my question is - how do pick events (or any events for that matter) iterate through overlapping artists on the canvas, and is there a way to control it? I think I would get my desired behavior if it moved from the top down always (rather than bottom up or randomly). I haven't been able to find sufficient enough documentation, and a lengthy search on SO has not revealed this exact issue. • How should I Test a Genetic Algorithm

  I have made a quite few genetic algorithms; they work (they find a reasonable solution quickly). But I have now discovered TDD. Is there a way to write a genetic algorithm (which relies heavily on random numbers) in a TDD way? To pose the question more generally, How do you test a non-deterministic method/function. Here is what I have thought of: Use a specific seed. Which wont help if I make a mistake in the code in the first place but will help finding bugs when refactoring. Use a known list of numbers. Similar to the above but I could follow the code through by hand (which would be very tedious). Use a constant number. At least I know what to expect. It would be good to ensure that a dice always reads 6 when RandomFloat(0,1) always returns 1. Try to move as much of the non-deterministic code out of the GA as possible. which seems silly as that is the core of it's purpose. Links to very good books on testing would be appreciated too.
