• Methods for making R plots look like Excel plots?

  I've been poking around with R graphical parameters trying to make my plots look a little more professional (e.g., las=1, bty="n" usually help). But not quite there. Started playing with tikzDevice. A huge improvement! Amazing how much better things look when the font sizes and styles in the figure match those of the surrounding document. Still, not quite there. What I'm ultimately looking for are those professional gradient shading, rounded corners, and shadow effects found in MS Excel plots. I know they're probably considered chart junk, but I like them. They're just nice looking. Q: How can I get these effects into my R plots? Do people usually just export to Inkscape and doodle over there? It would be nice if there were a literate programming approach. Is there an R package that handles these effects outright?

• Does cache absolute expiration guarantee that the cache is eliminated at the exact time?

  I am using the HttpRuntime cache to store lists of objects and in our current project it was specified that the objects should be cached until midnight, so I am using DateTime.Today.AddHours(24) in order to set the absolute expiration date to midnight. For example, if today is May 26th, the absolute expiration time will be set to May 27th 0:00. But somehow, when I change the clock of my computer, the objects are still in cache. Should I wait a little (the CacheItemPriority is set to Normal)? Am I forgetting something? Thank you

  Hello: I wrote a program using curl.exe that sends pictures to imageshark and receives a link to the pictures. The problem that I have to specify the path to the image on the disk, and the rest of my so constructed that I have uploaded these pictures to a binary char array And I mean, I can send these pictures to char variable, and not giving the file path (you know what I mean?) Not too much know how to use it to save the library directly to curl. • Image gallery with a Lightbox in jQuery

  Hi. I'd like to create a jQuery image gallery of showcased products. It will show one product image at a time, with Next/Previous arrows, and a brief name and price as overlay on the image. If users click it, it will go to the order page. It will have an icon to show a larger, modal version (Lightbox style) of the image with full description, price, and a link to a page to order it. In other words, it's an inline gallery, about 250px X 150px, with next/previous option, but also with a little icon to fire it up in a lightbox type modal window that can have links. Here's an example which doesn't have the inline gallery effect. Here's another, also missing the inline gallery. Is there such a beast as what I'm looking for? Thanks.

• Tilde not recognised in XML public identifier

  Hi everyone I found an interesting bug and wanted to know you think. Brief background: I've written a custom DTD and an example XML file (both UTF-8). I have now implemented a SAX parser in Java which I want to test. I got a SAXException complaining "An invalid XML character (Unicode: 0x7e) was found in the public identifier". Now, the URL of my DTD does contain a tilde character (unicode 0x7e). If I move the DTD file to another URL which does not contain a tilde, then my example XML file parses without causing a SAXException. So I have a work-around for this problem, but I am interested to know: why does this happen? Is this a bug? If so, is it with UTF-8, Java (1.6.0_18 x86), Windows (Server 2008 R2 x86_64) or what? Or is this one of those little obscure nuances of the XML 1.0 specification?

We have a Java backend (torque / turbine / velocity) and are using the jabsorb JSON-RPC library to bridge Java and Javascript. What do I need to know? What is the big picture of Dojo and JSON, and what are the nasty little details that will catch me up? • What are these values representative of in C bitwise operations?

  Hi All, I'm trying to reverse the order of bits in C (homework question, subject: bitwise operators). I found this solution, but I'm a little confused by the hex values (?) used -- 0x01 and 0x80. unsigned char reverse(unsigned char c) { int shift; unsigned char result = 0; for (shift = 0; shift < CHAR_BITS; shift++) { if (c & (0x01 << shift)) result |= (0x80 >> shift); } return result; } The book I'm working out of hasn't discussed these kinds of values, so I'm not really sure what to make of them.   I have been doing a little reading on Flow Based Programming over the last few days. There is a wiki which provides further detail. And wikipedia has a good overview on it too. My first thought was, "Great another proponent of lego-land pretend programming" - a concept harking back to the late 80's. But, as I read more, I must admit I have become intrigued. Have you used FBP for a real project? What is your opinion of FBP? Does FBP have a future? In some senses, it seems like the holy grail of reuse that our industry has pursued since the advent of procedural languages.

• Is it immoral to put a captcha on a login form?

  In a recent project I put a captcha test on a login form, in order to stop possible brute force attacks. The immediate reaction of other coworkers was a request to remove it, saying that it was inapropiate for that purpose, and that it was quite exotic to see a captcha in that place. I've seen captcha images on signup, contact, password recovery forms, etc. So I personally don't see inapropiate to put a captcha also on a place like that. Well, it obviously burns down usability a little bit, but it's a matter of time and getting used to it. With the lack of a captcha test, one would have to put some sort of blacklist / account locking mechanism, which also has some drawbacks. Is it a good choice for you? Am I getting somewhat captcha-aholic and need some sort of group therapy? Thanks in advance.

  I'm writing some little helper classes to handle trees. Basically, I have a node and a special root node that represents the tree. I want to keep it generic and simple. • IIS 7 problem which does not occur under apache

  I'm hosting a little site using a JavaScript to draw a simple graph. It involves one html index file, some css and some js files. It has all been working perfectly on two different apache servers, but when I set up IIS 7 the ajax calls fail. I get no java debug errors in firefox that I can work with, or any kind of error message at all. Without going into the code itself, does anyone have a similar experience with IIS? This is the first time I'm using IIS so I'm not quite sure what to expect to have trouble with. I'd love some input on this, if I have to delve into the code itself I'll make a new thread, I just thought I'd see if this could be a typical issue. Any help is appreciated!

• two android threads and not synchronized data

  i have a (perhaps stupid) question: im using 2 threads, one is writing floats and one is reading this floats permanently. my question is, what could happen worse when i dont synchronize them? it would be no problem if some of the values would not be correct because they switch just a little every write operation. im running the application this way at the moment and dont have any problems so i want to know what could happen worse? a read/write conflict would cause a number like 12345 which is written to 54321 and red at the same time appear for example as 54345 ? or could happen something worse? (i dont want to use synchronization to keep the code as fast as possible)

• C# - A good library to fake Time.Now?

  Hi, In order to Unit-Test a feature, I need to fake DateTime.Now. Something like: SupposeNowIs(new DateTime(..)); I can either use a third library that does it, or write my own little class. What do you recommand? Do you know any good library for this purpose? How would you fake time in C#? By changing DateTime.Now? (I suppose it's read only?). Thank you!

  Hi all, I have a small amount of programing experience with Siemens and Allen Bradley but would like to make my own app for a certain website I frequent. I would like the website to be a little more user friendly for me instead of having to open browser etc. Is it possible to have a simple forum translated into a widget so you can see the forum posts and post from there? I wanted to open links such as index.php?page=login to open with login.php, so I used Rewrite mode in .htaccesss, for example RewriteRule ^/*login.php$ /index.php?page=login [L] in a few pages there should be a query for errors such as RewriteRule ^/*support.php?(.+)$ /index.php?page=support&%{QUERY_STRING} [L] It works but I need to deny the main URLs so when users enters index.php?a=login manually nothing (or the main page) would show up and he should open the link only with /login.php. Is there a way to do this? A little help please...

  Heys guys! Im have been study UML and im trying to to design the use case diagram of a problem. Lets supose my app consists in this: Two Requesites: - create teams - create players This is the deal: A user can create a team, and after create a team he can create players for that team(not required). But in this app there are multiple users, and a user can create a team and other user can create players. The only constraint is that to create players must exist alreay a team. I research and i end up a little confuse. If i get the concepts of relations on use case diagrams right, i think i should have the folowwing two use cases: [use case - create team] <-------extends---- [use case - create player] I need opinions,Is this the proper solution? or should i have two not related use cases? • mac, java 1.5: javax.mail not recognized as a jar file

  hello fellow java developers, Having a little issue with creating a java application on a macintosh computer (snow leopard). I've set up my application in eclipse, added all of the appropriate jar files, but for some reason the code is not recognizing some of my variables as valid types. I've imported the libraries via import javax.mail.*; import javax.mail.internet.*; These libraries are not recognized by the application. BUT I've put them on the build path! Any advice on how to fix this?

  Hey! I just want to know your guys opinion on using join tables within the zend framework. Of course you can use relations by defining a referenceMap and dependentTables and stuff, or using setIntegrityCheck(false) within a db select(). The setIntegrityCheck version seems a little bit dirty to me, but the other version is not very suitable for big querys and joining many tables... I'm a PHP developer for 5 years now and new to the zend framework and just want get a direction for my first project. Thanks!!!

• Find location of current m-file in Matlab

  I'm working on my Matlab code in a number of different locations and it would really help if I could make the code aware of its location on the computer. I think there is a function that gives me exactly this information, but I can't remember what it is called or find it on Google. The idea is that I have a function myFunc that needs a file in its own directory, which can be in different locations on different computers. So in myFunc I want to do something like this: dir = theFunctionImLookingFor; system(fullfile(dir, 'someApp.exe')); (it could also be that the function I'm looking for doesn't return the directory, but the directory + m-file name, but that makes little difference to me) Thanks for any help!

• Turbogears 2 vs Django - any advice on choosing replacement for Turbogears 1?

  I have been using Turbogears 1 for prototyping small sites for the last couple of years and it is getting a little long in the tooth. Any suggestions on making the call between upgrading to Turbogears 2 or switching to something like Django? I'm torn between the familiarity of the TG community who are pretty responsive and do pretty good documentation vs the far larger community using Django. • Log4net rollingfile appender skipping every other day in asp.net mvc app

  Hi, I've set up some log4net logging on an asp.net mvc application i've had running for a little over a month now. I've set up rolling file (and smtp) appender on it. The application is hit several thousand times a day - alot of actions are logged. On top of these a number of batch jobs are run as part of the application that also write to the log. Now - as i've been occupied with other work, i've not attended to this application much assuming things to be working based on my test setup. Unfortunately i discover that the rolling file appender on my production server seems to be skipping every other day. Ie i have logs : 10/4/2010, 10/4/2010.1, 10/4/2010.2, 12/4/2010, 12/4/2010.1 , 14/4/2010, 14/4/2010.1 etc. Any idea what could be causing this? It is absolutely impossible that there has no action on these odd days for the lifetime of the application. Cheers

  Hi all, This may well be a little of an open-ended question The site I am working on requires to be optimised for performance. One of the key areas is to optimise the file sizes of the images used upon the site. Unfortunatley these images are being created by employees who do not have the required knowledge for creating images for the web, and it is my job to produce a set of guidelines for them to use. I was wondering whether there was any resource/guidlines/literature regarding typical images file sizes for images of different dimensions - as I would like to include something like this to aid them to ensure their images are being created properly.
