• Can I connect to SQL Server using Windows Authentication from Java EE webapp?

  I am currently investigating how to make a connection to a SQL Server database from my Java EE web application using Windows Authentication instead of SQL Server authentication. I am running this app off of Tomcat 6.0, and am utilizing the Microsoft JDBC driver. My connection properties file looks as follows: dbDriver = com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver dbUser = user dbPass = password dbServer = localhost:1433;databaseName=testDb dbUrl = jdbc:sqlserver://localhost:1433 I have zero problems with connecting to a SQL Server database in this fashion when using SQL Server authentication. Is there any way I can retrieve the credentials of the user's Windows Authentication and use that authentication for SQL Server? UPDATE: I know in ASP.net there is a way to set up Windows Authentication for access to the webapp, which is exactly what I am looking for, except I want to pass that token off to SQL Server for access to the database.

  With advice from users here I was able to deploy an application that connects with sql server 2008 database on to a server. I have the connection string with data source pointing to my machine since the database is stored on my machine temporarily. I do not have access to another machine and wanted to test the application so I remotely connected to the server to test the application and it does not connect to the server. I have TCP/IP enables, port to defaul 1433, and remote connections checked. Is there something I am missing? Please help

  Hi everyone, I'm new to SQL Server reporting services, and am trying to decipher an existing report. It's nothing too bad, but I notice it does have two report datasets defined. (They are generated via separate stored procedures) I'm trying to figure out where and how the report datasets are linked together so the Fields collection has both sets of columns available and the report has a single rowset to traverse. Is there a section in the report layout where a joining of datasets is defined? I'm using Visual Studio 2005 to design and preview the report fwiw. Thanks for your help!

  I have an application that accesses a sql server 2008 database. The server and database is stored on my local harddrive and I would like to learn to scale this up to having multiple users in our office access the application which I will i deploy on a server. For now the database will stay on my pc until I am ready to put it on a dedicated server for myself but for now how do I allow the application still to access my database. • Oracle global lock across process

  I would like to synchronize access to a particular insert. Hence, if multiple applications execute this "one" insert, the inserts should happen one at a time. The reason behind synchronization is that there should only be ONE instance of this entity. If multiple applications try to insert the same entity,only one should succeed and others should fail. One option considered was to create a composite unique key, that would uniquely identify the entity and rely on unique constraint. For some reasons, the dba department rejected this idea. Other option that came to my mind was to create a stored proc for the insert and if the stored proc can obtain a global lock, then multiple applications invoking the same stored proc, though in their seperate database sessions, it is expected that the stored proc can obtain a global lock and hence serialize the inserts. My question is it possible to for a stored proc in oracle version 10/11, to obtain such a lock and any pointers to documentation would be helpful.

  So let me preface this by saying that I'm not an SQL wizard by any means. What I want to do is simple as a concept, but has presented me with a small challenge when trying to minimize the amount of database queries I'm performing. Let's say I have a table of departments. Within each department is a list of employees. What is the most efficient way of listing all the departments and which employees are in each department. So for example if I have a department table with: id name 1 sales 2 marketing And a people table with: id department_id name 1 1 Tom 2 1 Bill 3 2 Jessica 4 1 Rachel 5 2 John What is the best way list all departments and all employees for each department like so: Sales Tom Bill Rachel Marketing Jessica John Pretend both tables are actually massive. (I want to avoid getting a list of departments, and then looping through the result and doing an individual query for each department). Think similarly of selecting the statuses/comments in a Facebook-like system, when statuses and comments are stored in separate tables.

  Hi Could someone help me with building the following query. I have a table called Sites, and one called Site_H. The two are joined by a foreign key relationship on page_id. So the Sites table contains pages, and the Site_H table shows which pages any given page is a child of by having another foreign key relation back to the site table with a column called ParentOf. So, a page can be have another page as a parent. Other data is stored in the Site_H table such as position etc, hence why it is separated out. I would like a query that returns the details of a page along with the details of its parent page. I just cant quite think about how to structure the SQL. Thanks

  The templates for stored-procs in SSMS do not auto-populate all input columns, again there is manual work involved. I am looking for something like right-click on table and say CREATE stored-proc, and then it allows to pick a template, based on which it can populate the parameters etc. and give check-box in GUI (like table designer, you can easily add/remove a column). Some support for change management with table undergoing alter or otherwise would also be helpful. Currently we manually write all stored-procs, which i think we should be able to save time and labor with automation. Any suggestion on other free 3rd party tools ?

  Hi Everyone I would really like to create a view. I know you can't use temp tables in MSSQL2005 views. Without rewriting the sql, is there anything obvious I've missed? Backup plan is to use a stored proc.   I'm trying to understand how to streamline the process of inserting a record if none exists or updating a record if it already exists. I'm not using stored procedures, although maybe that would be the most efficient way of doing this. The actual scenario in which this is necessary is saving a user preference/setting to my SettingsUser table. In MS Access I would typically pull a DAO recordset looking for the specified setting. If the recordset comes back empty then I know I need to add a new record which I can do with the same recordset object. On the other hand, if it isn't empty, I can just update the setting's value right away. In theory, this is only two database operations. What is the recommended way of doing this in .NET?

  I've created a form in php that collects basic information. I have a list box that allows multiple items selected (ie housing, rent, food, water). If multiple items are selected they are stored in a field called Needs seperated by a comma. I have created a report ordered by the persons needs. The people who only have one need are sorted correctly, but the people who have multiple are sorted exactly as the string passed to the database (ie. housing, rent, food, water) -- which is not what i want. Is there a way to seperate the multiple values in this field using SQL to count each need instance/occurance as 1 so that there are no comma delimitations shown in the results? CLICK FOR EXAMPLE

  Is there a way to do the following: I have a MySQL DB , and there are many stored procs written in it as well. I use MySQL client library in C to connect to this DB and amongst other things , call the stored procedures. Is there a way to set breakpoints in the stored procedures such that when the call is made from C program ( using mySql client library ) into the stored proc , then control flow is halted in the C program and we can step into the stored proc called to whatever level of nesting and insspecting variables etc ( like any decent C debugged provides )? Is there ANY way to do the above ? Through some third party tool or the like if not through plain MySql . Help is appreciated. thanks

  I am trying to create a table in my MS SQL database for Languages. I want to store an English name of Language and a local name of language in the database. i.e. Language, Language(local) English, English German, Deutsch Italian, Italiano Japanese, ??? ... ... I have 279 languages that I want to import, but when I import it shows '?????' for some like japanese, Russian and arabic etc The database Collation is Latin1_General_CI_AS. I would also like advise on multilingual websites; if i have a database of product descriptions and I want to have translation in multiple languages, should I go for separate databases or Can I have translation in one databse? (I prefer not to duplicate data!). Anything else to make sure users are able to write comments in different languages (char encoding on web?) and can be stored in database.

  Hello I have a server with live databases, and I have a test-server where I sometimes restore databases from the live one, to get fresh data. But this way I have to set up all the users again, I have about 4 different users with different permissions that need set again. Is there some way to do this a better way without using detach and attach, since I cant take the databases offline on the live-server? Prefered some thing I could run that "re-fills" the tables with fresh data. No need to redo stored procedures and rights. /M

Every time a child folder is created in the nested structure, the previous parentID is added. I want to get the RootFolderID of a folder which is added in the hierarchy as tabulated below.   Hello, I have two stored procedures and one trigger for a class I am taking that are done in sql server 2005. I want to recreate them in mysql with phpmyadmin. Everytime i put them in I get a 1064 error. Is this becuase phpmyadmin does not handle stored procedures or triggers well, or is it becuase the syntax from sql server 2005 to mysql is very different? If it is this, then where could i go online to learn the correct syntax to write my stored procedures and triggers in mysql/phpmyadmin... or should I just pick up a book at barnes and nobles? This is my senior project.

  Ok, for the last few days I have been attempting to find a method to pull a very important set of information form a table that contains what I call daily counts. I have a table that is setup as follows. person|company|prod1|prod2|prod3|gen_date Each company has more then one person, and each person can have different combination of products that they have purchased. What I have been trying to figure out is a SQL statement that will list the number of people that have bought a particular product per company. So an output similar to this: Comp ABC | 13 Prod1 | 3 Prod2 | 5 Prod 3 Comp DEF | 2 Prod1 | 15 Prod2 | 0 Prod 3 Comp HIJ | 0 Prod1 | 0 Prod2 | 7 Prod 3 Currently if a person did not select a product the value being stored is NULL. Best I have right now is 3 different statements that can produce this information if run on there own.   Hey there! I've been racking my brain on how to do this for a while, and i know that some genius on this site will have the answer.   I'm calling a stored function like this: select XML_INVOICE.GENERATE_XML_DOC('84200006823') from dual; The query results then show up in a table underneath, which I can right click and select "Export Date" - XML <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF8' ?> <RESULTS> <ROW> <COLUMN NAME="XML_INVOICE.GENERATE_XML_DOC('84200006823')" <![CDATA[<xml>yada yada</xml><morexml>...]]></COLUMN> </ROW> </RESULTS> The problem is the "..." - SQL Developer (2.1.0.63 on Linux) is not showing all the data - its truncating the result and appending the ellipsis. This is of no use to me. How do I get it to export ALL of my data?

• Multiple Table Joins to Improve Performance?

  If I have a table structure like this: Transaction [TransID, ...] Document [DocID, TransID, ...] Signer [SignerID, ...] Signature [SigID, DocID, SignerID, ...] And the business logic is like this: Transactions can have multiple documents Documents can have multiple signatures And the same signer can have multiple signatures in multiple documents within the same transaction So, now to my actual question: If I wanted to find all the documents in a particular transaction, would it be better, performance-wise, if I also stored the TransID and the DocID in the Signer table as well so I have smaller joins. Otherwise, I'd have to join through the Signature Document Transaction Documents to get all the documents in the transaction for that signer. I think it's really messy to have that many relationships in the Signer table though and it doesn't seem "correct" to do it that way (also seems like an update nightmare) but I can see that it might be better performance for direct joins. Thoughts? TIA!

  Hello, I'd like to get the value of the id column for an object just after I've created it. But I don't want to run another query for that. My book for beginner (SQL Server 2008 for Dummies) says that there are 2 tables (inserted and deleted) that hold the last row(s) that have been inserted, updated, or deleted. Unfortunately, only Triggers (says the book) can access those tables. But, if I use triggers, they will go off each time I "insert" a row even when I don't need them that functionality. Can I obtain the same effect with a Store Procedure (without having to run a separate query?) This is what I'm trying to do CREATE PROCEDURE myProcedure DECLARE @OrganizationName @ColumnID OUTPUT AS INSERT INTO Organization (OrganizationName) VALUES (@OrganizationName) SET @ColumnID = (// Please, I need Help here ...)
