• How do I connect two computers with a LAN cabel?

  I have two machines - Windows XP and a laptop using Windows 7. I connected them with a WLAN cable. On the Windows XP machine, I set the IP address to 192.168.0.10. On the Windows 7 laptop, I set the IP address to 192.168.0.20. The laptop can see the Windows XP machine, but Windows XP machine cannot see the Windows 7 machine. But this does NOT concern me. I want to move the files from my desktop (Windows XP) to Windows 7 (laptop). That's why I'm going through all this. The problem is that when I try to connect from Windows 7 to Windows XP machine, I get this window: I don't understand what username/password is needed. I use none on the Windows XP machine. I tried all usernames - no success. Please explain in deep details how to solve my problem so I can connect to my Windows XP machine. EDIT: Maybe this can help: the Windows XP machine is named 'I' and '???????? III' is the name of the laptop. Both computers share one workgroup - WORKGROUP.

This happens even if I invoke OpenVPN as a member of Administrators, and whether or not I've specified script-security 2 (as suggested by [this question][2]). • Setting up Tomcat6 properly in Ubuntu 10.04

  We have a Tomcat6 instance running on Ubuntu 10.04LTS. Our test box was just a Windows machine running Tomcat6. Both machines (Linux and Windows) have 1GB of ram. Via the Tomcat configuration tool in windows, I was able to set the min/max/permgen sizes of the JVM. Those were set to 256/512/128 respectively. Now on the Ubuntu box, I've tried setting the JVM options in several different places including: Adding JAVA_OPTS & CATALINA_OPTS in /etc/environment Adding JAVA_OPTS in $CATALINA_HOME/bin/catalina.sh Creating setenv.sh and adding JAVA_OPTS in $CATALINA_HOME/bin Adding JAVA_OPTS directly to /etc/init.d/tomcat6 Un-commenting the JAVA_OPTS and modifying it in /etc/default/tomcat6 Nearly all of those methods did not work, except for modifying /etc/init.d/tomcat6 directly (and possibly the /etc/default/tomcat6 change, but I just did that). However, my understanding is that when you change these settings, only one JVM should be used for the entire tomcat6 instance, and that memory is shared among the applications. On our windows box, tomcat6 is run as a service, and appears to behave this way. However, when I look at htop on the linux box, there are 20+ tomcat6 instances (I have an app that triggers internal jobs every X seconds using chron, so maybe these are threads? Or are they actual instances) all with those memory settings. The app runs fine for a bit, but eventually ends up locking up. I'm guessing each of these apps thinks it has 512m to work with and never GC's and then locks tomcat up completely. What is the proper way to set all of this up?

• Convert Custom Firefox Setup to Firefox Portable?

  I have a pretty awesome firefox set up and spent a lot of time getting it perfect. Is there any way that anyone knows about to convert the entire configuration to portable? Programs like MozBackup are great for backing up the complete set up, but you can't restore a Firefox profile to Firefox portable (maybe there is a workaround to fake it out? or possibly another method?) In case anyone is interested here is the gist of the best add-ons I've found: Autopager (scroll down google and other multi page results without clicking next) Coral IE Tab (IE in firefox - in case a website 'insists' that you use IE) Cyber search (search google straight from the address bar - VERY HELPFUL) Download StatusBar (display progress of downloads in the bottom of ff - no annoying popups FireFTP (erases need for an external FTP client - opens in a tab) Gmail manager (if you use multiple gmail accounts) Session Manager (saving multiple sessions of tabs - ff session recover) Surf Canyon (pull relevant stuff out of the depths of search results - even from craigslist Tab Mix Plus (ESSENTIAL - tab behavior customization - have multiple rows of tabs I also have it set up so you can type 'g test' in the address bar and ff will pull up the google results for 'test'. Similarly have it set up for guitar tabs (tab), facebook (f), wikipedia (w), google maps from my house (gmhome), torrents (tor), ticketmaster (t), rotten tomatoes (rt), craiglist (c) plus about 20 other sites.

• Performance analytics via DBMS "plugins", or other solution

  I'm working on a systems monitoring product that currently focuses on performance at the system level. We're expanding out to monitoring database systems. Right now we can fetch simple performance information from a selection of DBMS, like connection count, disk IO rates, lock wait times, etc. However, we'd really like a way to measure the execution time of every query going into a DBMS, without requiring the client to implement monitoring in their application code. Some potential solutions might be: Some sort of proxy that sits between client and server. SSL might be an issue here, plus it requires us to reverse engineer and implement the network protocol for each DBMS. Plugin for each DBMS system that automatically records performance information when a query comes in. Other problems include "anonymising" the SQL, i.e. taking something like SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > 20 AND name LIKE "%disk%" and producing SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > ? AND name LIKE "%?%", though this shouldn't be too difficult with some clever parsing and regex. We're mainly focusing on: MySQL MSSQL Oracle Redis mongodb memcached Are there any plugin-style mechanisms we can utilise for any of these? Or is there a simpler solution?

• How to shrink Windows 7 boot partition with unmovable files.

  I have just bought HP laptop with Windows 7 (64 bit). It has 500 GB HDD with three partitions: small hidden system partition, 12 GiB HP recovery partition, and 450 GiB C: boot partition. I would like to split this large C: partition into two partitions, leaving only 100 GiB for system, and giving the rest to new data partition. Although Windows built-in Disk Management utility has an option to shrink the bootable partition, it only allows me to shrink it roughly by half, even though only 20 GiB on the partition is used. As far as I understand, system unmovable files lie in the middle of the partition, preventing Disk Management utility to do what I want. And since new HP laptops don't come with OS installation disks (they only allow you to create recovery disks youself), I can't just repartition HDD and then reinstall OS. So, is there any way to shrink C: bootable partition and preserve Windows 7 working? P.S.: I have tried to use 3rd party GParted utility, and after shrinking the partition Windows 7 stopped booting with BSOD. System recovery didn't work, and I had to do factory recover. Since this is a long process, I would like to avoid doing it again :) So, please, suggest only proven solutions.

  Telnet from my mac OSx doesn't work while it works from the AWS instances and other networks. I have no local firewalls. Nothing related in /var/log/system In the below transcript, the telnet hangs at "Trying 74.125.136.26..." I have tried many different addresses across multiple domains.. same result ! • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process.   Hello, So I'm stuck with this directory: drwxrwxrwx 2 dan users 980M 2010-12-22 18:38 sessions2 The directories contents is small - just millions of tiny little files. I want to wipe it from the filesystem but have been unable to. My first try was: find sessions2 -type f -delete and find sessions2 -type f -print0 | xargs -0 rm -f but had to stop because both caused escalating memory usage. At one point it was using 65% of the system's memory. So I thought (no doubt incorrectly), that it had to do with the fact that dir_index was enabled on the system. Perhaps find was trying to read the entire index into memory? So I did this (foolishly): tune2fs -O^dir_index /dev/xxx Alright, so that should do it. Ran the find command above again and... same thing. Crazy memory usage. I hurriedly ran tune2fs -Odir_index /dev/xxx to reenable dir_index, and ran to Server Fault! 2 questions: 1) How do I get rid of this directory on my live system? I don't care how long it takes, as long as it uses little memory and little CPU. By the way, using nice find ... I was able to reduce CPU usage, so my problem right now is only memory usage. 2) I disabled dir_index for about 20 minutes. No doubt new files were written to the filesystem in the meanwhile. I reenabled dir_index. Does that mean the system will not find the files that were written before dir_index was reenabled since their filenames will be missing from the old indexes? If so and I know these new files aren't important, can I maintain the old indexes? If not, how do I rebuild the indexes? Can it be done on a live system? Thanks!

  In an AD domain with Windows Server 2008 R2 DCs users are complaining about delays in the bootup process of the clients. The group policy log reveals that the client is waiting ~ 20-50 seconds for "the network subsystem": Event 5322, GroupPolicy Group policy waited for 29687 milliseconds for the network subsystem at computer boot. This appears to be domain-specific as machines joining a different domain from the same network do not experience any delays and Event 5322 reports <1000 ms wait times at startup. It happens on virtual and physical machines alike, so it does not look like a hardware- or driver-related issue. Further investigation has shown that the client is taking its time before issuing DHCP requests. In the network traces, I can see IPv6 router solicitations and multicast DNS name registrations as soon as the network driver is loaded and the network connection is reported "up" in the event log (e1cexpress/36). Yet, the DHCPv4 client service seems to take another 15-50 seconds to start (Dhcp-Client/50036), so the IPv4 address remains unconfigured for a while. The DHCP client's messages in the event log are succeeding the service start of the "Sophos Anti-Virus" service (Sophos AV 10.3 package), which I suspect to be the culprit - the DHCP client service dependencies include the TDI Support driver which might be what Sophos is using to intercept network traffic: Network Location Awareness seems to break at startup as a side-effect, I see that off-site DCs are contacted due to what seems like a race condition between the GP client and the DHCP client / NLA service startup. I could set the Group Policy Client service to depend on NLA, yet this still would not eliminate the delay. Also, I am not all that sure that this is a good idea. Is there a known resolution which would eliminate the startup delay?

  I have several tab groups (~ 20) in Firefox. I can start the browser without any problems. However, as soon as I … click at the "Group tabs" icon in the toolbar, or right-click on a tab and hover over "Move to tab group", … Firefox becomes unresponsible/freezes for a rather long time (more than 2 minutes). It seems to load all tab groups (it doesn't load all the pages! I deactivated this in the settings).   I have one local Apache instance running with mod_cache (+ disk & mem) enabled, and it seems to cache content from my appserver fine. My app server sets Expiration headers and Last-modified. Yet, when deploying on a production server with the same modules enabled, I am getting the following error in my logs: blablabla not cached. Reason: Query string present but no explicit expiration time Any clues on why Apache is not caching content? The only difference is the Apache version. Locally I am running 2.2. • Legacy non-dpi-aware application resolution scaling?

  Our environment prominently featuers an outdated but absolutely mission-critical Win32 application that is not dpi-aware. It is optimized for an 800x600 display. Most of our users now have 17"-20" displays with native resolutions ranging from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050. However, they still operate these displays at 800x600 because the text in this legacy application is otherwise too small. Of course, it also means that nothing quite fits on the screen in Office 2007. Most of our workstations still run Windows XP, but some are on Windows 7 and there are more to come. About one-third of our users run the app remotely via MS Terminal Services, and the remainder run it locally. Is anyone aware of any method that could be used to scale this specific application to about 170%, so that it would fill a 1280x1024 screen, without affecting other applications that work best at the display's native resolution? I know how to do this in Mac OS X, but I have never found a way to do it in Windows. Of course, this ideally would be something that we could push out via Group Policy. I suppose we even could create a custom MSI package to re-deploy the legacy application with some sort of display virtualization layer, if such a thing exists.

• Windows XP SP3 Keyboard stops working

  Here's the strangest thing I have yet to see in 20+ yrs of computer repairs. My in-laws Windowsx XP SP3 has stopped recognizing keyboards. The keyboards work fine in the BIOS, during the boot select process to boot normally, etc. but once Windows comes up it will not recognize any USB keyboard. The USB mouse works fine, have tried different USB ports, different keyboards, etc. nothing works. I can log into the machine via VNC and use the remote keyboard just fine, but not connected locally. Tried a system restore, it says nothing changed. I am about to just re-install Windoze at this point, except I am afraid it will happen again. I have googled for this and it is not unheard of, but I have not found any solution other than nuking it. Anyone have any ideas? I have re-installed the USB drivers for the M/B. Gone into devices and deleted them for a re-install, etc. Keyboard works off a Linux live boot CD, and in the BIOS setup so it is not a hardware issue, and I have tried a few keyboards all of which I know are good and work fine on other systems.

  For some days AWStats takes %10-%20 of my CPU, takes 400-550 MB RAM and works for hours. Maybe my site's traffic became larger so process time takes more time than before or some bugs in program makes this. Anyway I want to disable AWStats temporarily. Maybe I would want to activate it in future. I found that answer. But it gives commands to remove AWStats. I only want to disable it temporarily. My system is Centos 6.3, Plesk 11.5.30 Update #19. I tried to disable cron jobs. I run this # killall awstats.pl I opened # vi /etc/cron.daily/awstats file and I changed it to this: #!/bin/sh #/usr/share/awstats/awstats_updateall.pl now -awstatsprog=/var/www/cgi-bin/awstats/awstats.pl -configdir=/etc/awstats >/dev/null 2>&1 exit 0 After some time I still see that awstats is running. But every night in 03:15 awstats starts again. Because of Plesk auto updates are working at that time, I changed from Plesk. Don't auto update automatically. But it seems like last night at 03:15 awstats started again. Is there any way to stop awstats temporarily except this solution ? Because this solution deletes awstats configs permanently and I don't know how to revert it back in future ? • "Steam needs to be online to update" - 404 fetching *_osx.zip.*

  Since yesterday evening, when I launch Steam on OSX, a self-update progress bar appears instead (at 0 of 30MB or so). This bar does not advance, an error dialog appears: Steam needs to be online to update Please confirm your network connection and try again. The app then exits. This happens whether wifi or ethernet or both are connected, and pings to the outside world succeed throughout. If I look at the logs in Console, they are very similar to this example (though that's not mine). Specifically: Success! http://store.steampowered.com/public/client/steam_client_osx?date=718277 [...] Failed! http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/breakpad_osx.zip.27f59114a86fcd50533e1d7b128f9300947f9969 Failed! http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/steam_osx.zip.11a99384214805f2dd3be5084ba6be61d662f8ac Failed! http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/miles_osx.zip.d9fb546541f59c1fdd03962a605236b1021abab8 Requesting the first URL successfully returns some data including the filenames of the latter three, and requesting any of those gives me a 404 (I've tried multiple clients on multiple continents). Searches on Google and Twitter show about 10-20 others having this problem in the past 24 hours, but hardly the angry mob I'd expect if the problem affected all Steam OSX users. Things that have already been tried with no effect: Switching between wifi and ethernet. Killing all Steam processes including ipcserver. Moving the ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/registry.vdf file away. Requesting those URLs with other clients and from other locations. Interesting: that first URL with the date parameter returns the same content even without that parameter (thus would lead to the same 404s) suggesting that the problem is not necessarily specific to coming from a particular currently-installed version of Steam.
