• HTML background-size:cover with floating objects

  I have a trivial page with body having an image background, with background-size:cover. I set html { height:100% } to fill up the entire page regardless of the content amount. Up to this point everything worked as expected. I've added a div and set position:absolute; right:0; width:200px; This, again, worked as expected, until I added content. When this div is populated so much that the contents take up more space than the height of the page, the scroll bar appears. Scrolling down reveals that the background image does not actually cover the entire page. This is due to the fact that my div is taller than 100% of the HTML height. How can I address this?

• 12c - flashforward, flashback or see it as of now...

  Oracle 9i exposed flashback query to developers for the first time.  The ability to flashback query dates back to version 4 however (it just wasn't exposed).  Every time you run a query in Oracle it is in fact a flashback query - it is what multi-versioning is all about.However, there was never a flashforward query (well, ok, the workspace manager has this capability - but with lots of extra baggage).  We've never been able to ask a table "what will you look like tomorrow" - but now we do.The capability is called Temporal Validity.  If you have a table with data that is effective dated - has a "start date" and "end date" column in it - we can now query it using flashback query like syntax.  The twist is - the date we "flashback" to can be in the future.  It works by rewriting the query to transparently the necessary where clause and filter out the right rows for the right period of time - and since you can have records whose start date is in the future - you can query a table and see what it would look like at some future time.Here is a quick example, we'll start with a table:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> create table addresses  2  ( empno       number,  3    addr_data   varchar2(30),  4    start_date  date,  5    end_date    date,  6    period for valid(start_date,end_date)  7  )  8  /Table created.the new bit is on line 6 (it can be altered into an existing table - so any table  you have with a start/end date column will be a candidate).  The keyword is PERIOD, valid is an identifier I chose - it could have been foobar, valid just sounds nice in the query later.  You identify the columns in your table - • SEO: Is there a limit to how long titles/descriptions should be?

  I am trying to fill up title and meta description for my Tumblr blog. The way I will do that is via the themes. For the title, it isn't too much of an issue, I can just get the title for the post although some post types do not have titles. The main question is about the description. I am thinking of using the start of the body content. For now, there is no way to limit the length of body content. I wonder if its OK to have the whole body in the description? I have contacted Tumblr support to suggest that they have a way of creating limiting text length in their template tags.

• What should a page's minimum word count be in order to be effectively indexed?

  I'm seeding a new site with hundreds of (high quality) posts, but since I am paying per word written, I'm wondering if anybody in the community has any anecdotal evidence as to how many words of content there should now be for a page to be counted just the same as a 700 word+ post, for example? I know there are always examples of pages ranking well with, for instance, 50 words or less of content, but does anyone have any strong evidence on what the minimum count should be, or has anyone read anything very informative in regards to this issue? • Can I include a robots meta tag outside of the head in HTML snippets indeded to be SSIed?

  I have a number of files in my site which are not intended for independent viewing, but rather to be AJAXed into content within the site. They obviously don't meet HTML standards (no body, head, etc.) as independent entities. I would like to prevent search engines from indexing these pages, but do not have access to /robots.txt (which would be much more ideal). My question is, could I include the following at the top of these partial HTML files and get the desired results? <meta name="robots" content="noindex, noarchive"> I guess there are two parts to this question. Will this cause any rendering issues in any browsers? Will search engines (at least Google & Bing) interpret this as intended?

• Where to find Joomla components for 1.0.X?

  I need to add new functionality to an old Joomla 1.0.15 installation. To be concrete, I need to add a component that allows me to add custom javascript to my content. I know that there is the option to edit the html source of the content but I rather would like to use a module for this. So I see two options (correct me if there are more): Update Joomla to at least version 1.5 (From some forum posts I found out that can be somewhat complicated). I don't know if it is worth the effort since new functionality requirements come rarely (and I think my client doesn't want to pay for a Joomla version update). Find an appropriate component and leave the old installation as it is. Can anyone point me into the right direction?

• XNA - Use Mouse To Rotate & Arrow Keys To Scroll A Linearly Wrapped Texture:

  Using XNA I'm working on my first, relatively simple, videogame for the PC. At the moment my game window is 1024 X 768 and I have a 'Starfield' linearly wrapped background texture 1280 X 1280 in size whose origin has been set to its center point (width / 2, height / 2). This texture is drawn onscreen using (graphics.PreferredBackBufferWidth / 2, graphics.PreferredBackBufferHeight / 2) to place the origin in the center of the window. I want to be able to use the horizontal movement of the mouse to rotate my texture left or right and use the arrow keys to scroll the texture in four directions. From my own related coding experiments I have found that once I rotate the texture it no longer scrolls in the direction I want, it's as if somehow the XNA framework's 'sense of direction' has been 'rotated' along with the texture. As an example of what I've described above lets say I rotate the texture 45 degrees to the right, then pressing the up arrow key results in the texture scrolling diagonally from top-right to bottom-left. This is not what I want, regardless of the degree or direction of rotation I want my texture to scroll straight up, straight down, or to the left or right depending on which arrow key was pressed. How do I go about accomplishing this? Any help or guidance is appreciated. To finish up there are two points I'd like to clarify: [1] The reason I'm using linear wrapping on my starfield texture is that it gives a nice impression of an endless starfield. [2] Using a texture at least 1280 X 1280 in conjunction with a game window of 1024 X 768 means that at no point in it's rotation will the edges of the texture become visible. Thanks for reading..... Update # 1 - as requested by RCIX: The code below is what I was referring to earlier when I mentioned 'related coding experiments'. As you can see I am scrolling a linearly wrapped texture in the direction I've moved the mouse relative to the center of the screen. • Transition to new site

  I'm almost finished rewriting the website for a non-profit organization. The existing site receives ~5,000 a month. The new site is being written in ASP.Net and the existing site is PHP. The current hosting provider does not support .Net hosting, so I'll be switching providers. My question revolves around the transition from the old site to the new. I would really like to get the new site up at the new hosting provider and do thorough testing before changing the DNS records for the domain. Question: How can I put the new site up, test it, make any changes/additions necessary before updating the domain DNS to point to the new IP without Google indexing the content? Also, what SEO repercussions should I be aware of when making such a drastic change to the content that exists under the domain name?

• Gzip compress offline?

  I've configured my site to serve compressed content by putting this line in .htaccess AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/javascript text/css application/javascript application/json This works perfectly for almost all files except a few large JSON files that are above 200Kb. For some reason they are not being compressed. I see that they don't using the net tab in firebug and the Network section in chrome. So as a workaround I thought I could compress these files offline and have Apache read them compressed. What tool should I use to compress them? is the linux gzip the one? any special flags or something I should use? What should I put in .htaccess so that the server would know to serve these files with content-encoding gzip ?

• What did I do wrong when installed this theme?

  I have a problem installing a theme for my Ubuntu, note that I am very new to it and probably messed something up. Still it seems to me that I did everything like it was stated in the INSTALL file. Theme: http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php/?content=140562 So I downloaded the *.zip package, unzipped it in home/.themes folder and changed Controls and Borders inside my theme preference. Still my result is pretty poor. You can look at the image, it looks nothing like what in the screenshot of the author. I also installed fonts running sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer and tried to install GTK2 engine as sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-murrine gtk2-engines-pixbuf, but it showed that 0 files was modified since I already have it. • Adsense link units trageting better keywords?

  I have one link unit above my navigation which targets exact keywords on what my site is about, on contrary my adsense for content Leadbord and Wide Skyscraper show ads that are totally opposite from my keyword,while my ctr increased for about 10 times with link unit I noticed cpc is lower also (but that was just based on one day, today is higher). Is it so bad to completly get rid of standard content ads and put link units, because this way I earn so little for that site but I think that is because smart pricing (accidental clicks on ads that my users are not interested)? I earn in whole day with about 25-35 clicks as much as keyword tool shows for only one click,my site is first for the topic? I really don't know what to do.. Has anyone had similar situation or can give some advice?

With so many assets, we have re-organized this portal slightly by introducing a new References section in the right lower corner, where we are providing quick links to the key assets. Furthermore, we have introduced a new Release Readiness section in the left navigation. Currently this points to the latest release; Release 4.   DETAILS I have a website that's content is in English. It is a niche website with a global market. However I would like users to be able to find the website using their own language. The scenario I envision is that the searcher is looking for the English content, but is searching in their own language. An example could be someone looking for "downloadable English crosswords." MY IDEAS Buy ccTLDs and have them permanently redirect to subdirectories on domain.com. The subdirectories would contain html sitemaps in the target language e.g.-Redirect domain.fr to domain.com/fr OR perhaps it would be better to maintain domain.fr as an independent site in the target language with the html sitemap linking to pages on domain.com ? QUESTION Are the above methods good/bad? What are some other ways I can optimize SEO for foreign languages?

  My question is what link should I use to enable a 1 click share on facebook of a webpage from an external application such as an email? Thanks Here are the details: User submits content to my website. Content is first reviewed by webmaster Webmaster sends out congratulations email, "Your article has been published, here is the link: http://www.mywebsite.com/new-page.html" I would like to include in the congratulations email, "Click on this link to share your article with your friends on facebook" The link I am using is the following: http://www.facebook.com/share.php?u=http://www.mywebsite.com/new-page.html If I paste it into the address bar and I am logged in it works fine and facebook parses the new page for meta data and displays Page title and description. However, when clicking on the link from my newsletter, I am redirected to the login page, even though I am logged in, and after logging in, I am sent to my profile page and the share is not posted.

• SEO Benefits of adding a Tumblr feed to site

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site?
