• DD-WRT router causing IP address conflicts across network

  My DD-WRT router has lost its mind! I just set up two DD-WRT routers, one as a WAP (working fine) and one in Client Bridge (routed) mode (the problem). Not long after setup I started seeing IP address conflicts on other machines. The event log always points the finger at my Client Bridge router's MAC address. Neighbour table overflow The log on my router is flooded with Neighbour table overflow errors. These start a minute or two after boot. The network is rather large, with +200 IP addresses being used in this subnet. The other router shows no such errors. Mass ARP requests from 1.1.1.1 I'm also seeing constant ARP requests (with the problem router's MAC address) from 1.1.1.1. Seems like it's bugging everything on the network for its MAC address and then promptly forgetting it (or never receiving a response). Configuration: Model: Buffalo N600 Firmware: DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (03/21/11) Wireless Mode: Client Bridge (routed) I'm not sure what configuration details are relevant and I'd rather not have comments flooded, so just ping me in this chat if you want to know something. • Does a Windows 7 dvd only have one language?

  I'm a Dutch developer living in Spain. I recently composed a new computer from new parts and I installed Windows 7 Professional 64 bit (OEM) on it. On the web site of the on-line shop there was a note saying "language: Spanish". Because my English is quite a bit better than my Spanish, but mainly because it is much easier to find information on the web in English, I want my OS to be in English. I asked the on-line shop if they also sold the UK version of Windows 7 but they assured me that "all Windows 7 versions are multi-language". With the installation of XP a few years ago, I remember that I was offered the option English or Spanish while the installation process was still in the DOS-like (non-graphical) screen. While installing Windows 7, I did not see any non-graphical screen and the first time I was asked about the language, was in a drop-down list that contained only Spanish. I know about the language pack possibility of Windows 7, but this is not available on Professional. Even if I had Ultimate, I don't know if it would be possible to install Windows in Spanish, and then add English as a second language from a language pack. I get the impression that English has to be the base-language. Furthermore, I am a bit sceptical until I'd see it in action. What happens with shortcuts (i.e. Select All: ctrl-a in English / ctrl-e in Spanish, and what about logging messages in Event Viewer, etc) So can anybody tell me how it works with languages in Windows 7? Have I been misinformed by the computer shop? Could it be that OEM versions of Windows are single language an a full installation is not?

• BGP path prepended route not listed anywhere

  We have a simple multi-homed setup with two routers that advertise our AS to two ISP. The second ISP (ISP B) is only used for backup when ISP A goes down, so we prepended our AS 3 times on this route. I spend a couple of hours this morning poking at looking glass routers all over the internet, and none of them list our backup route with the prepended path. I checked the south african internet exchange, the london internet exchange, oregon internet exchange and a couple dozen ISPs. All of them have multiples routes through ISP A, often with 3 or 4 hops. The route through ISP B should, at least, appear somewhere and have 5 or 6 hops. But I couldn't find it anywhere. (I checked the full bgp tables on the looking glass routers, using show ip bgp 65000) My questions are: Is there a limit to the size of a route after which most routers will simply discard the route ? Is our backup route even going to work when ISP A goes down, if no router knows about it ? Our two routers are connected on iBGP. Would it be possible that the route through ISPB is not announced because the iBGP session prefers the route through ISPA ? This is what non-exist-map and advertise-map are supposed to do, but none of those are used in either routers.

• Poor Write Performance in VM inside Proxmox PVE 2.0

  I am running a PVE 2.0 on a decent Hardware (2 SATA HDDs as RAID1, 12GB RAM, i7 CPU) but the I/O Performance is very poor inside the VM (Ubuntu 11.10 Server). • Search for files after a relative date using Windows search

  I am looking for a way to save a search that includes a relative date. Specifically I am looking for a way to save a search that matches files that have a modification date that is 7 days ago. I have read the Windows Search Advanced Query Syntax document and I am not seeing a way to say 7 days ago. The numbers and ranges section does mention that relative dates are possible. The problem is that the relative dates described there do not fit the criteria I need. The lastweek almost looks like what I want except if I run a query like after:lastweek on a Monday it will only show my file that have been modified since Sunday at 12:00. The lastweek/lastmonth seem to relative to the start of the week/month which is not what I need. Multi-word relative dates: week, next month, last week, past month, or coming year. The values can also be entered contracted, as follows: thisweek, nextmonth, lastweek, pastmonth, comingyear. One nice thing about saved searches is that they are stored as an XML document and the file format is documented. I am not seeing how to form a correct value for a datetime. If I was able to understand this format, I suspect I could use a text editor and created a saved search that does what I want. • Windows XP, Preference menu's hidden for many programs

  I don't know when this started happening, but it has been several months since I first noticed it. Basically, when I go to a preferences menu of some programs, the preferences window is completely hidden, but the program see's it as being open. This prevents me from interacting with the preferences and the actual program. So far I've noticed it on Adobe Illustrator and Netbeans. Illustrator when I select edit - Preferences - An Option. On Netbeans it happens when I right click on a site and select properties. Note that the main workspace is grayed out. I have to hit Escape to close the hidden preferences window. I've tried unstinstalling, completely wiping the registry of any trace of the program and reinstalling. Thought it may have been a multi-monitor issue when I switched from 2 monitors down to 1, but menu's were not on other monitor when I plugged one back in. I've reset workspaces, windows display, windows performance settings, changed resolution, safe mode, everything I can think of. I cannot figure out what would cause the same problem on completely unrelated software, and I cannot reset it by reinstalling. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Split Tunnel VPN using incorrect Tunnel

  Our company has a handful of field offices that have recently been setup with a regular internet connection after we removed the T1 and router that connected them directly to our network. Now, when the users are in the office, they log in to the VPN to be able to connect to the network. For the sake of them being able to print and scan from the local multi-function we have setup a split tunnel VPN. We currently have about 15-20 users using this setup around the country without any problems. Recently one of our users started having problems accessing internal programs/sites when connecting from both home and the office. There are three other users in the same office and they do not have this problem. I assumed that it was something with the computer and went ahead and replaced it with another of the same model. The computer worked fine in our home office; however, when the user received it, she had the exact same problem both at home and in the field office. Thinking it may be a NIC driver issue I sent her another computer, this time a different model, same problem occurred. If I update the host file to point to the correct paths, things will work, and if I connect via a normal VPN connection everything works, but the user cannot scan or print - which is a problem. Have tried to find ways to create another tunnel on a normal VPN and have tried to find ways to force the correct tunnel on the split tunnel VPN. It appears that there is something related to the ISP because if I connect to Comcast or Verizon it is fine but once she connects to Insite then she has problems. I have been unable to get any support from Insite as they don't feel the issue is with them. We use a Nortel VPN client. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Questions: What is the correct way install p5-MODULES from ports with installed perl5.14 in an clean system? How to fix wrong dependency data on perl5.12 without the need install and reinstall them again What i'm doing wrong? Ps: know perlbrew and/or Local::lib - but for this case - want port versions.

• Current wisdom on SQL Server and Hyperthreading?

  Lots of articles out there (see Slava Oks's original SQL 2000 article and Kevin Kline's SQL 2005 update) recommend disabling hyperthreading on SQL servers, or at least testing your specific workload before enabling it on your servers. This issue is gradually becoming less relevant as true multi-core processors replace hyperthreaded ones, but what's the current wisdom on this issue? Does this advice change any with SQL 2005 64-bit, or SQL 2008, or Windows Server 2008? Ideally, this should be tested in advance in a staging environment, but what about for servers that have already made it into production with HT enabled? How can I tell if performance issues we're experiencing might be related to HT? Is there some specific combination of perfmon counters that might point me in that direction, as opposed to all the other things I normally pursue when working on improving SQL performance? Edit: This is especially attractive because of the potential for an across the board improvement for some of my high-cpu servers, but the client is going to want to see something concrete that helps me identify which servers really could benefit from disabling hyperthreading. Of course, conventional performance troubleshooting is ongoing, but sometimes any little bit helps.

• Move an existing RAID 5 array from Ubuntu to Gentoo

  I have a 64-bit Ubuntu machine with a 4-disk RAID 5 using software raid (md). I've been able to boot an Ubuntu LiveCD and recognize the array with a simple mdadm -A /dev/md0. It was easy to mount after that and nothing had to rebuild. I'm installing Gentoo on this box now (multi-boot, non-RAID root partition) and I have md auto-detect turned on in the kernel. When I boot Gentoo I get: "invalid superblock magic on sdd" for each of the drives in the array. I boot back to Ubuntu and they mount no problem. I tried copying the mdadm.conf that works in Ubuntu to Gentoo, and then ran mdadm -A /dev/md0 but it reports that there is no array named md0. I don't want to lose data (obviously) and I don't want to have to let the RAID rebuild every time I switch between OSes. Any help is appreciated. Both are using mdadm 3.1.4 Both are running 64-bit kernels. mdadm -D /dev/md0 from Ubuntu yields: http://pastebin.com/5gj2QNkV UPDATE: After rebooting I noticed that it still complains about invalid blocks, but cat /proc/mdstat shows an inactive /dev/md127 with the same disks as my raid. • Multiple Internet connections, multiple networks and split access in Linux

  I am having trouble setting up multiple internet connections for split access in Linux. We have 3 internet connections from 3 different ISP's. We want to configure our Linux gateway machine such that our three internal networks 10.2.1.0/24, 192.168.20.0/24 & 192.168.2.0/24 use ISP1, ISP2 and ISP3 respectively in a split access manner. Outlined below is the layout/settings, Interfaces of the Linux Gateway connected to Routers: eth0: 10.1.1.2<---------->10.1.1.1(Internal Interface of ADSL Router)[ISP1] eth1: 192.168.15.2<------>192.168.15.1(Internal Interface of 3G Router)[ISP2] eth3: 192.168.1.2<------->192.168.1.1(Internal Interface of ADSL Router)[ISP3] Kindly note that none of the interfaces in the Linux gateway has a public static IP address. Routers of ISP1 and ISP2 get assigned a dynamic public IP address when connected to the Internet, router of ISP3 has been assigned a public static IP address. Interface of Linux gateway connected to a switch, eth4: 10.2.1.1(LAN Interface for ISP1) eth4:0 192.168.20.1(LAN interface for ISP2) eth4:1 192.168.2.1(LAN Interface for ISP3) eth4:0 & eth4:1 are virtual interfaces with eth4 being the interface connected physically. • printing parallel over ethernet cable

  I have a bit of an interesting challenge :) I have a machine with a parallel printer output, i want it to be able to print instead to a printer in a different room and i know that parallel isnt great over big distances. i found this: http://www.amazon.com/over-Cat5-Extension-Cable-Adapter/dp/B002WJ9S6Y%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAINHICTCYYZGJWT4Q%26tag%3Dusbprintercables.net-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB002WJ9S6Y which will let me connect over cat5, but its usb to cat 5. my machine can only output on parallel (its not a computer) so what i was thinking of getting is a parallel(f) to usb and usb to parallel (M) for either side i.e. machine - parallel - usb - cat5 - usb - parallel -printer just seems a bit messy :) suggestions? another thing i would like to try is to get rid of the old school parallel printer and instead use a network based multi function. would this be possible? i.e. machine - parallel -usb - cat5 - ethernet print server - network printer this might be rougher because the machine cannot "know" that we are using a network printer. it can ONLY print to LPT1 Thanks!

• hosts file seems to be ignored

  I have almost fresh Ubuntu desktop box. OS was installed two weeks ago and updated from karmic repositories. Last week I had no problems with DNS. But this week something had changed. I'm not sure what and when, and not sure whether I changed any configs. So now I have some really weird situation. • Uninstall Perl 5.10 and Install 5.8 on Ubuntu 10.04

  I was using Ubuntu 8.04 with installed Perl 5.8.8. I had installed Bugzilla 3.4.4 with some custom scripts and it was working fine. I had to upgrade Ubuntu from 8.04 to 10.04 and automatically Perl is also upgraded from Perl 5.8 to 5.10. Now, accessing Bugzilla displays an error message related to Perl module. While trying to run checksetup.pl, I am getting the following error message: root@cvsnew:/var/www/bugzilla-3.4# perl checksetup.pl * This is Bugzilla 3.4.3 on perl 5.10.1 * Running on Linux 2.6.32-24-generic-pae #39-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 07:39:26 UTC 2010 Checking perl modules... Checking for CGI.pm (v3.33) ok: found v3.48 perl: symbol lookup error: lib/i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi/auto/Digest/SHA/SHA.so: undefined symbol: Perl_Tstack_sp_ptr Accessing Bugzilla throws : "500 Internal Server Error". I explored this issue and found that this issue has come up because upgrading Ubuntu upgrades Perl 5.8 to 5.10 automatically. It seems like Perl 5.10.1 isn't binary compatible with the previous. Now, I want to uninstall Perl 5.10.1 and Install Perl 5.8.8 on my Ubuntu 10.04 box. I will appreciate if someone has already done that or share the required steps/commands to do it.

• Home media storage solution

  I record lots of personal HD film footage and am looking for a cheap way to store all of this. I take ~120 GB of footage each month, so something expandable would be nice... something that might be able to hold 6+ SATA drives. There is a low load requirement, as there is never more than a user or two... but it should be able to keep up with streaming 2 simultanious HD videos. I don't really want to spend more than $200-$300 on top of the $900 I am thinking of spending for 6X2GB SATA drives@ $150 apiece, but I am willing to pay extra for a quality solution. Should I get a cheap NAS server? a cheap multi-drive external enclosure? should I just get some used systems off craigslist? If it is an independent system I'll probably just throw ubuntu on it since I can maintain that well. Its easy to do a software raid from ubuntu too, if I choose to go that way. Thanks

• What do I need to do to set my computer as Default Gateway?

  We are trying to put together a box with dual LAN cards (let's say Outer and Inner), where the Inner LAN card is supposed to act as a default gateway on the network it is connected to. This box is running Ubuntu. The basic purpose for this box is to take messages generated on the inner network, do some work with them and forward them out the Outer LAN card to a server. The inner network is completely isolated with simply a regular switch connecting the Inner LAN Card with two other boxes. These other boxes either throw out multi-cast messages (which the Inner LAN Card is listening to), or send out unicast messages meant for the server which is not on this inner network. So, we need the Inner LAN Card to act as a default gateway, where these unicast messages will then be sent, and the code on the dual-LAN Card box can then intercept and forward these messages to the server. Question: 1. How do we setup the LAN Card to be default gateway (does it need some configuration on Ubuntu)? 2. Once we have this setup, is it a simple matter of listening to the interface to intercept the incoming messages? Any help (pointers in the right direction) is appreciated. Thanks.

• Better approach to archiving large amounts of original video footage using optical media (DVD/Blu-ra

  This question is to share my experience as well as ask for suggestions for better methods. Along with 2 friends, I completed the making of a short documentary film in 2006. Clip is at: http://www.youtube.com/mediamotioninvision The film was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 on Windows XP. More details and screenshot here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/smilingrobbie/1350235514/ ( note this is not intended to be a plug, we've moved on from this initial learning curve project ;) ) The film is in 4:3 standard definition 720x576 PAL format. As well as retaining the final 30minute film, I wanted to keep all original files that assembled together to make the film. The footage was 83.5Gb So I archived them to over 20 4.7Gb DVD recordables in the original .avi format (i.e. data DVD-ROM format, NOT DVD-Video Mpeg2) Some .avi DV video files were larger than 4.7Gb so I used 7-zip to split them ( here is a guide as to how to do that: http://www.linglom.com/2008/10/12/how-to-split-a-large-file-using-7-zip/ ) To recombine them, a dos shell command like this would do that: copy /b file.avi.* file.avi would do the job, where .* is a wild card to include all the split parts e.g. 001, 002...00n assuming they are all in the same directory path folder. file.avi is the recombined file identical to the original. Later on, I bought a LG BE06 LU10 USB 2.0 Super-multi Blu-ray burner and archived the footage to 2 (two) x 50Gb BD-R DL discs. Again in the original format, written as files to a BD-R in the BD-R BD-ROM UDF format readable by PC/Mac etc, NOT Blu-ray video/film format. This seems to be a good solution for me, because: the archive is in a robust, reasonably permanent, non-volatile medium, i.e. DVD recordable / Blu-ray (debates about stability of optical media organic chemical dye compounds/substrates aside) the format of the archive is accessible by open source tools or just plain Windows Explorer and it's not in a proprietary format I just thought I'd ask folks for their experience on better methods, if such exist.

• Formatting an external HDD stuck at 70%

  My external HDD which is a 250GB WD (powered by USB) seems to have problem! Whenever i try to copy some files, it stuck while copying. I decided to format it. So I used windows tool and performed the format (not quickly) however at nearly 70% it stuck. Then I decided to perform a low level format with lowlevel. Again it stuck at 70%. I endup that the HDD has bad sector. So is there any tool that mark the bad sectors and bypass them? It is not very reasonable to through 250GB because of some bad sectors! P.S: I saw a similar topic but there were no conclusion there either. • What should I be doing while I wait for a progress bar?

  So I am sitting here waiting for a progress bar to run (20 mins or so), and was wondering how best to use my time as a SysAdmin. I debated not posting this question briefly, as this could get flagged as subjective, but I think it's an important question, and a question that can be legitimately answered (per the FAQ) I know this something a lot of sys admins deal with, especially if they are client-based I would venture to guess. There is a lot of material out there about how to multi task, but SysAdmin work is unique in this area as well. I could switch over to another project, but I could get wrapped up in that, and forget about the original project I was working on, and that's hard if you are billing a client for your time, both for tracking your time, as well as being fair to that client. I could check ServerFault, but that isn't directly work related, I could sort my email, so on and so forth. What do you do, or what should I do when I have time waiting for a progress bar? Thanks! I'm not sure what and when, and not sure whether I changed any configs. So now I have some really weird situation. • Java web app deployment and ControlTier adoption

  I've been searching for a configuration and deployment manager tool for my java-linux based web service and have been looking mainly at ControlTier (http://controltier.org). We operate at a medium scale (100's of hosts, multi-DC, dozens of services). There seem to be be plenty of lower level system admin tools such as chef, puppet, cfengine, bcfg2 and more and my understanding and the reason I'm calling them "low level" is that they are great for system level administration tasks such as setting up a mount, file permissions, users etc but aren't designed, for example for java deployments, which usually come with a build process and special java semantics. In many cases any tool can be used to do anything but if it was not designed for the task it can get uncomfortable. OTOH control-tier seem to have been designed just for that - java application deployments, at least that's what all the tutorials on their site demonstrate but here's the problem - The wiki at http://controltier.org/wiki/ is pretty good and stuffed with examples and the company behind the open source CT product is very responsive (pushy...) however, I'm yet to have seen any material from 3rd party users on the net. No success stories, no detailed blog posts, no best practices, no cheat sheets, not even hate letters, nothing. This plays badly for DTO solutions, CT's sponsor for two reasons, one is that it makes me suspicious what's the reason for the poor adoption? and second, what do I do if I get stuck and there's no help page on CT's wiki page and the mailing list is too slow to answer. I'm stuck with a "free" product that a consultancy company is pushing. So my question here - I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has had real world experience with CT for java based web app deployments and if he'd thumb up the product? Any other comments that may enlighten me are welcome of course...
