• ASUS X53S Intel Graphics and Unity 3D

  I just bought a ASUS X53S. Everything works flawlessly except that I can't run Unity 3D on it because NVIDIA Linux drivers currently doesn't support Optimus. So I'm stuck with the other integrated Intel Graphics Adapter. I'm already installed BumbleBee but it doesn't help with Unity 3D thing. Will the Xorg driver ever support OpenGL and especially GLX_texture_from_pixmap so that Unity 3D will work with it? The Intel driver is really snappy with Unity 2D and seems to support most other X acceleration features such as smooth scrolling.

• In Google Analytics, how can I determine the value of a page if no goals or revenue have been determined?

  I have 4 years of data in Analytics with over 20 million pageviews for the entire site. No goals have ever been set up, and while the site is an ecommerce site, no ecommerce features in Google Analytics have ever been taken advantage of. So I have no way to determine what the actual value of a page is. I've been tasked with determining if a particular page on the site is worth keeping around. How might I use all standard data (pageviews, bounce rate, time on page, time on site, etc.) to help determine the value of this page? I really appreciate any help I can get!

• Updating and organizing class diagrams in a growing C++ project

  I am working on a C++ project that is getting bigger and bigger. I do a lot of UML so it is not really hard to explain my work to co-workers. Lately though I implemented a lot of new features and I gave up updating by hand my Dia UML diagrams. I once used the class diagram of Visual Studio, which is my IDE but didn't get clear results. I need to show my work on a regular basis and I would like to be as clear as possible. Is there any tool that could generate a sort of organized map of my work (namespaces, classes, interactions, etc.) ?

• What are the security implications of running untrusted code on my server?

  I would like to set up an app that allows users to send their code and execute it on my server. The thought of running untrusted code makes me cringe, so I am trying to set up an exhaustive list of security threats that should be addressed. I am assuming I should strip down certain features of the language executed, like file access or (maybe) networking. I also come across terms like sandboxing or chroot. • Manage own framework

  I have developed my own little framework for webpages. And for different websites I had to change some parts of the framework respectively developed new features / improvements. But in some cases I missed to copy the changes in the original framework code. How do you manage your frameworks? I copy the complete framework to a library folder in my projects folder structure. So I have a copy of the framework in every project. I would like to have it on one place in order to modify / improve / bugfix it once and then distribute it on the projects.

  After six months of development on a project, our stakeholders have had a "gut check" and have decided that the path that we've been walking (a custom designed application framework and data access layer) is holding us (the developers) back from quickly developing the features they would like to see. After several days of debate management and the development team have decided to scrap the current incarnation and start over using ASP.net MVC, with Entity Framework as the bases of the a 'quick and dirty', lets just get it done project. In days following, our senior developer who has never worked with MVC or Entity Framework has finally gotten into a sample project and done some work. His take on ASP.net MVC, "this is not software engineering". So my question is this; what do you do, when one doesn't think the code is complicated enough?

• New Solaris Cluster!

  We released Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1 recently. OSC offers both High Availability (HA) and also Scalable Services capabilities. HA delivers automatic restart of software on the same cluster node and/or automatic failover from a failed node to a working cluster node. Software and support is available for both x86 and SPARC systems. The Scalable Services features manage multiple cluster nodes all providing a load-balanced service such as web servers or app serves. OSC 4.1 includes the ability to recover services from software failures, failure of hardware components such as DIMMs, CPUs, and I/O cards, a global file system, rolling upgrades, and much more. • SharePoint 2007: Error message when adding a Web part to a list or library page

  Sytmptom:   You have a list or document library page (allitems.aspx) and you are trying to add a Web part.  You get an error message: Unable to add selected Web part(s).  (name of Web part): The file is not checked out.  You must first check out this document before making changes. Publishing features are not turned on and it is not a page that lives in a library accessible by the GUI. Solution:  Open the site in SharePoint Designer and check out the page. Then, check in the page after modifications are done.  It seems like this is just a bug.

• Java.net Reborn

  Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains. The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects. With the high abandonment rate of open source projects, the was a lot to remove. • returning null vs returning zero, which would be better?

  I inherited a project that I am managing and having to maintain pending the redevelopment of the code base. At the moment I am being tasked with adding little feature all over the place and have gotten into the habit of returning null instead of zero in parts of the code where I am working on. The problem is we have a client that is using this code and parts of code that require data from my implemented features recieve a null and dump the stack trace in UI. I would like to avoid this entirely from my input but without the nullPointer exceptions there's the potential that errors would be introduced into the client's data which may go un-noticed. Usually I would have come up with my own error notification system but I have never inherited a project before. so I am unsure whether to continue down this path. I still believe that the stack dump is preferable to un-noticed data corruption/inaccuracies.

• Exadata - Following up on customer deployments

  Over the last year or so I've been visiting customers who have had Exadata deployed and have been enjoying the benefits the platform has been providing. Benefits include greater performance, consolidating multiple databases, data compression and time to value improvements. Most often I hear my reports run faster. One hospitality company report times that used to take 3 hrs now run in 12 seconds. Another services company reported all their batch reports taking 11hrs now run in 38 mins. Also reported that their transactions post faster, and batch updates run faster. So what does that mean? For most of them it means that now they have a platform that can handle growth. Most are growing 15% organically, but I've also seen 40% growth thru acquisition. Exadata has been keeping up with the additional data demand by customers leveraging compression and the smart storage features.

There are lots of ways to render that data, but it doesn't get much simpler for storing it. – Byte56 Current isosurface extraction methods aren't most effective/bug-free. Cubical Marching Squares seem to solve most of the issues, however it is a relatively new method and there aren't too many resources about it. (I've found single university paper) Even if we stick to CMS, when we want to add multi-material support, we can either divide surface into multiple meshes, or pass a texture array or texture atlas to shaders, then we are limited to set amount of textures and additionally increase memory-usage alot.

• Flash Retirement - HTML to be "the one"

  I will update this blog post as we get closer to the retirement of the Flash portal. As you might have read the support.oracle.com  flash site will be replaced with what you see in supporthtml.oracle.com,  once we get the rest of the features and functions ported over to the html site. The HTML site is written using Oracle's ADF stack. So we are now pretty much 100% eating our own dog food.  More details to follow.
