    Between the transitions of the web app I use a Session object to save my objects in. I've heard there's a program called memcached but there's no compiled version of it on the site, besides some people think there are real disadvantages of it. Now I wanna ask you. What are alternatives, pros and cons of different approaches? Is memcached painpul for sysadmins to install? Is it difficult to embed it to the existing infrastructure from the perspective of a sysadmin? What about using a database to hold temporary data between web app transitions? Is it a normal practice?

    I know its possible to convert an image to CS_GRAY using public static BufferedImage getGrayBufferedImage(BufferedImage image) { BufferedImageOp op = new ColorConvertOp(ColorSpace .getInstance(ColorSpace.CS_GRAY), null); BufferedImage sourceImgGray = op.filter(image, null); return sourceImgGray; } however, this is a chokepoint of my entire program. I need to do this often, on 800x600 pixel images and takes about 200-300ms for this operation to complete, on average. I know I can do this alot faster by using one for loop to loop through the image data and set it right away. The code above on the other hand constructs a brand new 800x600 BufferedImage that is gray scale. I would rather just transform the image I pass in. Does any one know how to do this with a for loop and given that the image is RGB color space?

There is a class called CollectionHelper that defines the following constant varibale: public final class CollectionHelper { public static final List EMPTY_LIST = Collections.unmodifiableList( new ArrayList(0 ) ; public static final Collection EMPTY_COLLECTION = Collections.unmodifiableCollection(new ArrayList(0) ); public static final Map EMPTY_MAP = Collections.unmodifiableMap( new HashMap(0) ); They have used these constants to initialize collections with immutable instances. Why they didn't simply use the Collections.EMPTY_LIST for initializing lists? Is there a benefit in using the following method?

    I am trying to parse an XML file from an HTTP URL. I want to configure a timeout of 15 seconds if the XML fetch takes longer than that, I want to report a timeout. For some reason, the setConnectTimeout and setReadTimeout do not work.     Is there a way, either in code or with JVM arguments, to override the current time, as presented via System.currentTimeMillis, other than manually changing the system clock on the host machine? A little background: We have a system that runs a number of accounting jobs that revolve much of their logic around the current date (ie 1st of the month, 1st of the year, etc) Unfortunately, a lot of the legacy code calls functions such as new Date() or Calendar.getInstance(), both of which eventually call down to System.currentTimeMillis. For testing purposes, right now, we are stuck with manually updating the system clock to manipulate what time and date the code thinks that the test is being run. So my question is: Is there a way to override what is returned by System.currentTimeMillis? For example, to tell the JVM to automatically add or subtract some offset before returning from that method? Thanks in advance!

  • Implementing java FixedTreadPool status listener

    Hi there, it's about an application which is supposed to process (VAD, Loudness, Clipping) a lot of soundfiles (e.g. 100k). At this time, I create as many worker threads (callables) as I can put into memory, and then run all with a threadPool.invokeAll(), write results to file system, unload processed files and continue at step 1. Due to the fact it's an app with a GUI, i don't want to user to feel like the app "is not responding" while processing all soundfiles. (which it does at this time cause invokeAll is blocking). Im not sure what is a "good" way to fix this. It shall not be possible for the user to do other things while processing, but I'd like to show a progress bar like "10 of 100000 soundfiles are done". So how do I get there? Do I have to create a "watcher thread", so that every worker hold a callback on it? I'm quite new to multi threading, and don't get the idea of such a mechanisem..
