  Say I have the following table definitions in SQL Server 2008: CREATE TABLE Person (PersonId INT IDENTITY NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, Name VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, ManyMoreIrrelevantColumns VARCHAR(MAX) NOT NULL) CREATE TABLE Model (ModelId INT IDENTITY NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, ModelName VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, Description VARCHAR(200) NULL) CREATE TABLE ModelScore (ModelId INT NOT NULL REFERENCES Model (ModelId), Score INT NOT NULL, Definition VARCHAR(100) NULL, PRIMARY KEY (ModelId, Score)) CREATE TABLE PersonModelScore (PersonId INT NOT NULL REFERENCES Person (PersonId), ModelId INT NOT NULL, Score INT NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (PersonId, ModelId), FOREIGN KEY (ModelId, Score) REFERENCES ModelScore (ModelId, Score)) The idea here is that each Person may have only one ModelScore per Model, but each Person may have a score for any number of defined Models. As far as I can tell, this SQL should enforce these constraints naturally. The ModelScore has a particular "meaning," which is contained in the Definition. Nothing earth-shattering there. Now, I try translating this into Entity Framework using the designer. After updating the model from the database and doing some editing, I have a Person object, a Model object, and a ModelScore object. PersonModelScore, being a join table, is not an object but rather is included as an association with some other name (let's say ModelScorePersonAssociation). The mapping details for the association are as follows: - Association - Maps to PersonModelScore - ModelScore ModelId : Int32 <=> ModelId : int Score : Int32 <=> Score : int - Person PersonId : Int32 <=> PersonId : int On the right-hand side, the ModelId and PersonId values have primary key symbols, but the Score value does not. Upon compilation, I get: Error 3002: Problem in Mapping Fragment starting at line 5190: Potential runtime violation of table PersonModelScore's keys (PersonModelScore.ModelId, PersonModelScore.PersonId): Columns (PersonModelScore.PersonId, PersonModelScore.ModelId) are mapped to EntitySet ModelScorePersonAssociation's properties (ModelScorePersonAssociation.Person.PersonId, ModelScorePersonAssociation.ModelScore.ModelId) on the conceptual side but they do not form the EntitySet's key properties (ModelScorePersonAssociation.ModelScore.ModelId, ModelScorePersonAssociation.ModelScore.Score, ModelScorePersonAssociation.Person.PersonId).   This should hopefully be a simple one. When using a date time picker in a windows form, I want an SQL statement to be carried out, like so: string sql = "SELECT * FROM Jobs WHERE JobDate = '" + dtpJobDate.Text + "'"; Unfortunately, this doesn't actually provide any results because the JobDate field is stored as a DateTime value. I'd like to be able to search for all records that are on this date, no matter what the time stored may be, any help?   Hi guru's We're running SQL 2005 standard SP2 on a 4cpu box. Suddenly it crashdumps, after which all pooled connections are invalid and it goes into admin-only mode (only sa can connect) The short stackdump is below. I have NO idea why! Can anyone help?

  Dear Devs From couple of days i am thinking of a following scenario Consider I have 2 tables with parent child relationship of kind one-to-many. On removal of parent row i have to delete the rows in child those are related to parents. simple right? i have to make a transaction scope to do above operation i can do this as following; (its psuedo code but i am doing this in c# code using odbc connection and database is sql server) begin transaction(read committed) Read all child where child.fk = p1 foreach(child) delete child where child.pk = cx delete parent where parent.pk = p1 commit trans OR begin transaction(read committed) delete all child where child.fk = p1 delete parent where parent.pk = p1 commit trans Now there are couple of questions in my mind Which one of above is better to use specially considering a scenario of real time system where thousands of other operations(select/update/delete/insert) are being performed within a span of seconds. does it ensure that no new child with child.fk = p1 will be added until transaction completes? If yes for 2nd question then how it ensures? do it take the table level locks or what. Is there any kind of Index locking supported by sql server if yes what it does and how it can be used.   Im looking for some way of extrating data form a tree table as defined below. Table Tree Defined as :- TreeID uniqueidentifier TreeParent uniqueidentifier TreeCode varchar(50) TreeDesc varchar(100) Data some (23k rows), Parent Refs back into ID in table The following SQL renders the whole tree (takes arround 2 mins 30) I need to do the following. 1) Render each Tree Node with its LVL 1 parent 2) Render all nodes that have a Description that matches a TreeDesc like 'SomeText%' 3) Render all parent nodes that are for a single tree id. Items 2 and 3 take 2mins30 so this needs to be a lot faster! • Mercurial hg clone error - "abort: error: Name or service not known"

  I have installed the latest hg package available for Fedora Linux. However, hg clone reports an error. hg clone http://localmachine001:8000/ repository reports: "abort: error: Name or service not known" localmachine001 is a computer within the local network. I can ping it from my Linux box without any problems. I can also use the same http address and browse the existing code. However, hg clone does not work. If I execute the same command from my Macintosh machine, I can easily clone the repository. Some Internet resources recommend editing .hgrc file, and adding proxy to it: [http_proxy] host=proxy:8080 I have tried that without any success. Also, I assume that proxy is not needed in this case, since the hg server machine is in my local network. Can anyone recommend me what should I do, or how could I track the problem?   There wasn't much on google about this error, so I'm askin here. I'm switching a PHP web application from using MySQL to SQL Server 2008 (using ODBC, not php_mssql). Running queries or anything else isn't a problem, but when I try to do scope_identity (or any similar functions), I get the error "Executing SQL directly; no cursor". I'm doing this immediately after an insert, so it should still be in scope. Running the same insert statement then query for the insert ID works fine in SQL Server Management Studio. Here's my code right now (everything else in the database wrapper class works fine for other queries, so I'll assume it isn't relevant right now): function insert_id(){ $x = $this->query_first("SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY('session_log') as insert_id"); echo "($x)"; return $x; } query_first being a function that returns the first result from the first field of a query (basically the equivalent of execute_scalar() on .net). • Accounting System for Winforms / SQL Server applications

  If you were going to write a vertical market C# / WinForms / SQL Server application and needed an accounting "engine" for it, what software package would you chose ? By vertical market, I mean the application is intended to solve a particular set of business problems, not be a generic accounting application. Thus the value add of the program is the 70% of non-accounting related functionality present in the finished product. The 30% of accounting functionality is merely to enable the basic accounting needs of the business. I said all that to lead up to this: The accounting engine needs to be a royalty-free runtime license and not super expensive. I've found a couple C#/SQL Server accounting apps that can be had with source code and a royalty free run time for $150k+ and that would be fine for greenfield development funded by a large bankroll, but for smaller apps, that sort of capital outlay isn't feasible. Something along the lines of $5k to $15k for a royalty-free runtime would be more reasonable. Open-source would be even better. By accounting engine, I mean something that takes care of at a minimum: General Ledger Invoices Statements Accounts Receivable Payments / Credits Basically, an accounting engine should be something that lets the developer concentrate on the value added (industry specific business best practices / processes) part of the solution and not have to worry about how to implement the low level details of a double entry accounting system. Ideally, the accounting engine would be something that is licensed on a royalty free run-time basis. Suggestions, please ?

• LEFT OUTER JOIN in Linq - How to Force

  I have a LEFT OUTER OUTER join in LINQ that is combining with the outer join condition and not providing the desired results. It is basically limiting my LEFT side result with this combination. Here is the LINQ and resulting SQL. What I'd like is for "AND ([t2].[EligEnd] = @p0" in the LINQ query to not bew part of the join condition but rather a subquery to filter results BEFORE the join.   Based on a previous question and with a lot of help from Damir Sudarevic (thanks) I have the following sql code which works great but is very slow. Can anyone suggest how I can speed this up and optimise for speed. I am now using SQL Server Express 2008 (not 2005 as per my original question). What this code does is retrieves parameters and their associated values from several tables and rotates the table in a form that can be easily compared. Its great for one of two rows of data but now I am testing with 100 rows and to run GetJobParameters takes over 7 minutes to complete? • "Cannot open user default database" error with "User Instance=True"

  I have a desktop application that uses Sql user instancing. This is my connection string: "Data Source=.\SqlExpress; AttachDbFilename=C:\path\file.mdf; Integrated Security=True; User Instance=True; Connect Timeout=100;" My application creates this DB, downloads a load of data into it from a web service and then does a lot of actions with it. The problem comes when I attempt to re-open the connection. I get a SqlException: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'myDomain\myusername'." This error makes no sense in this context - I have no default database. I'm logging in to an instance created just for the current application, running separately from SqlExpress. There's no other way to connect to this DB. If I start the SqlExpress service and connect to the default instance it won't be visible. It only exists for this application. The file on disk is locked by the SqlExpress instance service running under the application. if I stop the app and restart it the connection works first time, but fails on re-opening. If I just stop the app I can delete the .mdf files and begin again, but it still crashes when I re-open the connection. As my app started the instance running as me my current user should have access to every DB in the instance. This doesn't happen for other users of the same code, which suggests that it's a SQL config issue. Does anyone have any idea what causes this and how to work around it?

  Excuse me for what I'm sure is an elementary question for most of you, but I have an issue with table columns from separate tables having the same name as one another, and trying to select from both tables in the same query. Okay, so this is my code: $q_value = $mdb2->quote($_POST['query']); $field = $_POST['field']; $sql = "SELECT m.*, l.name FROM memberlist m, mail_lists l WHERE m.$field=$q_value AND l.id = m.list ORDER BY m.id"; $l_list = $mdb2->queryAll($sql, '', 'MDB2_FETCHMODE_ASSOC'); The table memberlist has the following columns: id, email, list, sex, name and the table mail_lists has the following columns: id, name After running the query, I later loop through the results with a foreach like so: foreach ($l_list as $l){ //blahblah } The problem is that the column 'name' in mail_lists refers to the names of the list, while the column 'name' in memberlist refers to the name of the member. When I later access $l-name (within the foreach), will I get m.name, or l.name? Furthermore, how do I get access to the other? Or will I just have to do two separate queries?

• Rails validation error messages: Displaying only one per field

  Rails has an annoying "feature" which displays ALL validation error messages associated with a given field. So for example if I have 3 validates_XXXXX_of :email, and I leave the field blank I get 3 messages in the error list. This is non-sense. It is better to display one messages at a time. If I have 10 validation messages for a field does it mean I will get 10 validation error messages if I leave it blank? Is there an easy way to correct this problem? It looks straightforward to have a condition like: If you found an error for :email, stop validating :email and skip to the other field.   I created a simple news website. I store both videos and images in IMAGES table. Videos added have videos and images added have images stored in a column called ImagesType. Images and Videos attached to a news is stored in ImagesID column of the NEWS table. • Numeric Order By In Transact SQL (Ordering As String Instead Of Int)

  I have an issue where I am trying to order a result set by what I believe to be a numberic column in my database. However when I get the result set, It has sorted the column as if it was a string (So alphabetically), instead of sorting it as an int. As an example. I have these numbers, 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 When I order by in Transact SQL, I get back : 1, 10, 11, 2, 3, 4, 5 I had the same issue with Datagridview's a while back, And the issue was because of the sorting being done as if it was a string. I assume the same thing is happening here. • MSMQ on Win2008 R2 won’t receive messages from older clients

  Hi all I'm battling a really weird problem here. I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Message Queueing installed. On another machine, running Windows 2003 is a service that is set up to send messages to a public queue on the 2008 server. However, messages never show up on the server. I've written a small console app that just sends a "Hello World" message to a test queue on the 2008 machine. Running this app on XP or 2003 results in absolutely nothing. However, when I try running the app on my Windows 7 machine, a message is delivered just fine. I've been through all sorts of security settings, disabled firewalls on all machines etc. The event log shows nothing of interest, and no exceptions are being thrown on the clients. Running a packet sniffer (WireShark) on the server reveals only a little. When trying to send a message from XP or 2003 I only see an ICMP error "Port Unreachable" on port 3527 (which I gather is an MQPing packet?). After that, silence. Wireshark shows a nice little stream of packets when I try from my Win7 client (as expected - messages get delivered just fine from Win7). I've enabled MSMQ End2End logging on the server, but only entries from the messages sent from my Win7 machine are appearing in the log. So somehow it seems that messages are being dropped silently somewhere along the route from XP or 2003 to my 2008 server. Does anyone have any clues as to what might be causing this mysterious behaviour? -- Jesper

• Simple, fast SQL queries for flat files.

  Does anyone know of any tools to provide simple, fast queries of flat files using a SQL-like declarative query language? I'd rather not pay the overhead of loading the file into a DB since the input data is typically thrown out almost immediately after the query is run. Consider the data file, "animals.txt": dog 15 cat 20 dog 10 cat 30 dog 5 cat 40 Suppose I want to extract the highest value for each unique animal. I would like to write something like: cat animals.txt | foo "select $1, max(convert($2 using decimal)) group by $1" I can get nearly the same result using sort: cat animals.txt | sort -t " " -k1,1 -k2,2nr And I can always drop into awk from there, but this all feels a bit awkward (couldn't resist) when a SQL-like language would seem to solve the problem so cleanly. I've considered writing a wrapper for SQLite that would automatically create a table based on the input data, and I've looked into using Hive in single-processor mode, but I can't help but feel this problem has been solved before. Am I missing something? Is this functionality already implemented by another standard tool? Halp!

• SQL Server Bulk insert of CSV file with inconsistent quotes

  Is it possible to BULK INSERT (SQL Server) a CSV file in which the fields are only OCCASSIONALLY surrounded by quotes? Specifically, quotes only surround those fields that contain a ",". In other words, I have data that looks like this (the first row contain headers): id, company, rep, employees 729216,INGRAM MICRO INC.,"Stuart, Becky",523 729235,"GREAT PLAINS ENERGY, INC.","Nelson, Beena",114 721177,GEORGE WESTON BAKERIES INC,"Hogan, Meg",253 Because the quotes aren't consistent, I can't use '","' as a delimiter, and I don't know how to create a format file that accounts for this. I tried using ',' as a delimter and loading it into a temporary table where every column is a varchar, then using some kludgy processing to strip out the quotes, but that doesn't work either, because the fields that contain ',' are split into multiple columns. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to manipulate the CSV file beforehand. Is this hopeless? Many thanks in advance for any advice. By the way, i saw this post SQL bulk import from csv, but in that case, EVERY field was consistently wrapped in quotes. So, in that case, he could use ',' as a delimiter, then strip out the quotes afterwards.

  In SSMS 2008, I am trying to execute a stored procedure in a database on another server. The call looks something like the following: EXEC [RemoteServer].Database.Schema.StoredProcedureName @param1, @param2 The linked server is set up correctly, and has both RPC and RPC OUT set to true. Security on the linked server is set to Be made using the login's current security context. When I attempt to execute the stored procedure, I get the following error: Msg 18483, Level 14, State 1, Line 1 Could not connect to server 'RemoteServer' because '' is not defined as a remote login at the server. Verify that you have specified the correct login name. I am connected to the local server using Windows Authentication. Anyone know why I would be getting this error?

What I want to do is return true if the result-set is at least one -- i.e. the id was found in the table.
