• Silverlight MEF – Download On Demand

  Take the Slalom Challenge at www.slalomchallenge.com! A common challenge with building complex applications in Silverlight is the initial download size of the xap file.  MEF enables us to build composable applications that allows us to build complex composite applications.  Wouldn’t it be great if we had a mechanism to spilt out components into different Silverlight applications in separate xap files and download the separate xap file only if needed?   MEF gives us the ability to do this.  This post will cover the basics needed to build such a composite application split between different silerlight applications and download the referenced silverlight application only when needed. Steps: 1.     Create a Silverlight 4 application 2.     Add references to the following assemblies: System.ComponentModel.Composition.dll System.ComponentModel.Composition.Initialization.dll 3.     Add a new Silverlight 4 application called ExternalSilverlightApplication to the solution that was created in step 1.  Ensure the new application is hosted in the web application for the solution and choose to not create a test page for the new application. 4.     Delete the App.xaml and MainPage.xaml files – they aren’t needed. 5.     Add references to the following assemblies in the ExternalSilverlightApplication project: System.ComponentModel.Composition.dll System.ComponentModel.Composition.Initialization.dll 6.     Ensure the two references above have their Copy Local values set to false.  As we will have these two assmblies in the original Silverlight application, we will have no need to include them in the built ExternalSilverlightApplication build. 7.     Add a new user control called LeftControl to the ExternalSilverlightApplication project. 8.     Replace the LayoutRoot Grid with the following xaml:     <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="Beige" Margin="40" >         <Button Content="Left Content" Margin="30"></Button>     </Grid> 9.     Add the following statement to the top of the LeftControl.xaml.cs file using System.ComponentModel.Composition; 10.   Add the following attribute to the LeftControl class     [Export(typeof(LeftControl))]   This attribute tells MEF that the type LeftControl will be exported – i.e. made available for other applications to import and compose into the application. 11.   Add a new user control called RightControl to the ExternalSilverlightApplication project. 12.   Replace the LayoutRoot Grid with the following xaml:     <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="Green" Margin="40"  >         <TextBlock Margin="40" Foreground="White" Text="Right Control" FontSize="16" VerticalAlignment="Center" HorizontalAlignment="Center" ></TextBlock>     </Grid> 13.   Add the following statement to the top of the RightControl.xaml.cs file using System.ComponentModel.Composition; 14.   Add the following attribute to the RightControl class     [Export(typeof(RightControl))] 15.   In your original Silverlight project add a reference to the ExternalSilverlightApplication project. 16.   Change the reference to the ExternalSilverlightApplication project to have it’s Copy Local value = false.  This will ensure that the referenced ExternalSilverlightApplication Silverlight application is not included in the original Silverlight application package when it it built.  The ExternalSilverlightApplication Silverlight application therefore has to be downloaded on demand by the original Silverlight application for it’s controls to be used. 1.     In your original Silverlight project add the following xaml to the LayoutRoot Grid in MainPage.xaml:         <Grid.RowDefinitions>             <RowDefinition Height="65*" />             <RowDefinition Height="235*" />         </Grid.RowDefinitions>         <Button Name="LoaderButton" Content="Download External Controls" Click="Button_Click"></Button>         <StackPanel Grid.Row="1" Orientation="Horizontal" HorizontalAlignment="Center" >             <Border Name="LeftContent" Background="Red" BorderBrush="Gray" CornerRadius="20"></Border>             <Border Name="RightContent" Background="Red" BorderBrush="Gray" CornerRadius="20"></Border>         </StackPanel>       The borders will hold the controls that will be downlaoded, imported and composed via MEF when the button is clicked. 2.     Add the following statement to the top of the MainPage.xaml.cs file using System.ComponentModel.Composition; 3.     Add the following properties to the MainPage class:         [Import(typeof(LeftControl))]         public LeftControl LeftUserControl { get; set; }         [Import(typeof(RightControl))]         public RightControl RightUserControl { get; set; }   This defines properties accepting LeftControl and RightControl types.  The attrributes are used to tell MEF the discovered type that should be applied to the property when composition occurs. 17.   Add the following event handler for the button click to the MainPage.xaml.cs file:         private void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)         {                   DeploymentCatalog deploymentCatalog =     new DeploymentCatalog("ExternalSilverlightApplication.xap");                   CompositionHost.Initialize(deploymentCatalog);                   deploymentCatalog.DownloadCompleted += (s, i) =>                 {                     if (i.Error == null)                     {                         CompositionInitializer.SatisfyImports(this);                           LeftContent.Child = LeftUserControl;                         RightContent.Child = RightUserControl;                         LoaderButton.IsEnabled = false;                     }                 };                   deploymentCatalog.DownloadAsync();         } This is where the magic happens!  The deploymentCatalog object is pointed to the ExternalSilverlightApplication.xap file.  It is then associated with the CompositionHost initialization.  As the download will be asynchronous, an eventhandler is created for the DownloadCompleted event.  The deploymentCatalog object is then told to start the asynchronous download. The event handler that executes when the download is completed uses the CompositionInitializer.SatisfyImports() function to tell MEF to satisfy the Imports for the current class.  It is at this point that the LeftUserControl and RightUserControl properties are initialized with composed objects from the downloaded ExternalSilverlightApplication.xap package. 18.   Run the application click the Download External Controls button and see the controls defined in the ExternalSilverlightApplication application loaded into the original Silverlight application. Congratulations!  You have implemented download on demand capabilities for composite applications using the MEF DeploymentCatalog class.  You are now able to segment your applications into separate xap file for deployment.

• Did you forget me?

  I know it has been a long time since I last blogged. Still at it, looking for work in the “IT” field. Had another phone interview (only found out during the interview that it was for one year contract job, but I still would take it) for a Help Desk job. Didn’t get it, they thought I was not a application support person and more of a hardware support. Gee..I started out in “IT” as a programmer. Then a programmer/computer operator, then a Tandem/Lan operator and finally a Network operator. I had to deal with so many different operating systems, software and applications.   And they thought I was too hardware. Well I am working a temp day job with the U.S. Census. It gets me out of the house and out in the country. If find getting paid to check for living quarters not bad job, except for the many houses I find that are up for sale and looks like it was not the owners (former owners it seems) idea, with the kids toys still in the yards. Not good for some one with a over active imagine or for my truck. So far I have backed in to ditch (and had to be pulled out), in to power pole (no damage to pole and very little to truck) and a mail box (no damage to truck but mail box was leaning a little) in the last two weeks.   Oh an I have started reading/using “The Love Dare” book from the movie “Fireproof”. I restarted (yes I have had to go back to day one from day five) the dare this Sunday. Dare one dare/day one “Love Is Patient” and the first dare is (reading from the book is): “The first part of this dare is fairly simple. Although Love is communicated in a number of ways. Our words often reflect the condition of our heart. For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and to sys nothing negative to your spouse at all. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. It’s better to hold your tongue that to say something you’ll regret. “. This was almost too easy as I can hold back from saying anything bad to any one but, this can also be a problem in life (you hold back for so long and!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A “JDE in a box” solution is a Partner Go-to-Market solution where Oracle is helping each partners in identifying the components to use and where we also want to leverage our experiences and help our Partner to successfully combine this to a Partner offering.Target audience are Partner with no or limited Solaris/Sparc knowledge.This is the first version of this training and we all will learn from this experiences.   Actually, I do not know if I have used the right terms to describe our situation. Basically, We would like to have a system to help us to do billing and support at the same time. For example, we would like to offer outside users a customer support with ticket system, however the outside users need to purchase some credits beforehand through the system in order to submit their requests. Sometimes, our representatives will charge extra unit of credit for solving some open tickets due to the complexity and hours spent. (It will be nice to submit user a further billing request to same open ticket, and user can either accept/declined) Is there any available application or service we can use for the purpose above?

• What's Microsoft's strategy on Windows CE development?

  Lots of specialized mobile devices use Windows CE or Windows Mobile. I'm not talking about smart phones here -- I know that Windows Phone 7 is Microsoft's current technology of choice here. I'm talking about barcode readers, embedded devices, industry PDAs with specialized hardware, etc... the kind of devices (Example 1, Example 2) where Windows Phone Silverlight development is not an option (no P/Invoke to access the hardware, etc.). Since direct Compact Framework support has been dropped in Visual Studio 2010, the only option to develop for these device currently is to use outdated development tools (VS 2008), which already start to cause trouble on modern machines (e.g. there's no supported way to make the Windows Mobile Device Emulator's network stack work on Windows 7). Thus, my question is: What are Microsoft's plans regarding these mobile devices? Will they allow native applications on Windows Phone, such that, for example, barcode reader drivers can be developed that can be accessed in Silverlight applications? Will they re-add "native" Compact Framework support to Visual Studio and just haven't found the time yet? Or will they leave this niche market?

• Upgrading my home network to Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless-N turns out slower than before

  My home network has three desktops, three laptops and some NAS drives. All desktops and NAS drives support Gigabit LAN and all laptops support Wireless-N. I was running a 100 BaseT switch though. I recently purchased a Gigabit Ethernet Switch and an Wireless-N ADSL Modem-Router. After upgrading, I noticed that the wireless file transfer speeds from laptop-to-NAS and vice versa became terribly slow. Possibly even slower than before the upgrade. The transfer speeds from desktop-to-NAS (wired) have improved though. As an example, copying a 50GB file from laptop-to-NAS was estimated at 15 hours! Is there something I can do to improve this? Also, should I consider buying a dedicated wireless access point for speed rather than using the Wireless modem-router?

• Intellectual Property for in house development

  My company is a sub contractor on a major government contract. Over the past 5 years we've been developing in house applications to help support our company and streamline our work. Apparently in 2008 our president of the company at that time signed a continuation of services contract with the company we subcontract with on this project. In the contract amendment various things were discussed such as intellectual property and the creation of new and existing tools. The contract states that all the subcontractor's tools/scripts/etc... become the intellectual property of the main contractor holder. Basically all tools that were created in support of the project which we work on are no longer ours exclusively and they have rights to them. My company really doesn't do software development specifically but because of this contract these tools helped tremendously with our daily tasking. Does my company have any sort of recourse or actions to help keep our tools? My team of developers were completely unaware of any of these negotiations and until recently were kept in the dark about the agreements that were made. Do we as developers have any rights to the software? Since our company is not a software development shop, we have created all these tools without any sort of agreements or contracts within the company stating that we give our company full rights to our creations? • Where does Picasa store albums?

  For people searching, the question might also be phrased: How do I restore Picasa albums from backup? When I reinstalled my computer and restored my photos from backup, some of my albums showed up, but many didn't. I've found the following info: Picasa on Windows stores (stored?) album info in these places: Vista: C:\Users\<myaccount>\AppData\Local\Google\Picasa2Albums\ XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<myaccount>\Local Settings\Application Data\google\Picasa2Albums\ I restored that folder and was still missing many of my albums. That folder also contained a folder of backups, but the most recent one was from a long time ago and I've created albums since then. According to https://support.google.com/picasa/bin/picasa.google.com/support/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=release_notes.cs, since the Dec 8, 2011 build, Picasa saves album info in .ini file(s). This probably explains the albums that I do see. http://katelharrison.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-restore-picasa-albums-mac.html has some great info on restoring albums on Macs, but the folder structure seems to be different there than on Windows.

• Active X Control issue on Terminal Server 2003

  I have a security camera system which can be viewed remotely via a web browser. It works excellent only with IE 6 and up and requires an ActiveX control "ERViewer.ocx". Some users require to view the cameras via Windows Terminal Server, but when they try to open the link to the DVR they get the prompt ti install the ActiveX and then the browser crashes when they try to install it. I logged in as admin and got the same issue. I called the tech support of the DVR but they have no idea, in other words, the usual useless tech support. Here is what I get in the error log Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16735, faulting module ERViewer.ocx, version 1.6.0.8, fault address 0x000064d7. I am sure it could be some kinda permission getting an ocx to run in IE. What else can I tweak?

• Remote Access to MSSQL Database From 1&1 Hosting [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers I just paid ($6 /month) for shared Windows hosting through 1&1 hosting. I was having trouble connecting to my database from home, so I sent an email to support. I received the following response: As we checked your concern here in our end, please be advised that due to limitation of Shared Hosting services, there is no option to connect the database to your SQL Management Studio or through Visual Studio. It is only possible for Dedicated Server package. You may only access the database using MyLittleAdmin at the Control Panel. A dedicated server is like $200 per month! What is the point of having database access only through a web console? I feel I am missing something here, or maybe the support agent is. Is there a way to access my MS SQL database on their servers through Visual Studio or SQL Management Studio from my machine? If not, is there a web host who allows this for less than $200 a month? EDIT: Marked as duplicate... I'm not asking for a list of web hosts, I'm asking how to remotely connect to my MSSQL database through 1&1's services.

It says The .NET Application Updater component uses HTTP-DAV to download the application update and thus requires a Web server that supports HTTP-DAV. IIS 5.0 that comes with Windows 2000 and newer operating systems support HTTP-DAV. My server is a Windows 2008 Server and runs IIS 7.0. Does IIS 7.0 support "HTTP-DAV"? And if yes how can I enable it?

• Check_webinject plugin will not connect to https site using

  We're using Nagios to monitor some of our web sites. We have a script that uses the older plugin that we are trying to switch to using webinject.pl from cpan. When the script runs, it generates this error: LWP::Protocol::https::Socket: SSL connect attempt failed with unknown error error:1407741A:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:tlsv1 alert decode error at /usr/local/share/perl5/LWP/Protocol/http.pm line 51. It appears the web site does not support TLSv1 for https. If it matters, the site is a Cisco WebVPN. I've pointed the same script at a different site that does support TLSv1 and it seems to work fine. My web search is coming up empty. • Adobe Reader crashes immediately after starting

  I'm running ubuntu 12.04 32 bit system. I installed adobe reader through software center but when click on the icon to start acroread it immediately crashes during showing splash window. I've also tried using terminal running command "acroread" but no gain. It even doesn't show any error massage. It should be noted that to solve the problem i've installed lsb module and ia32-libs. But my problem is not solved.

  Howdy, Anyone with experience on using both control panels can tell me which one is better suited to run on a windows shared hosting account? I have the option of choosing one of them for my shared hosting account. The web hosting guys (MochaHost) say that DotNetPanel (DNP) is better than Plesk (more features, newer architecture, faster), but looking at the DNP interface I honestly can't say that I agree with them. The big advantage of DNP over Plesk for me is the fact that I can only run .Net 4.0 using DNP (Plesk doesn't support .Net 4.0 yet, as the tech support told me). Thanks
