• Cannot boot NixOS Install CD

  I am trying to install NixOS on an Acer laptop. When I try to boot off of the install CD, the system starts up and shows the Acer logo. Then, the boot menu of the CD appears, but it only displays on the top left corner of the screen. The rest of the screen still shows the Acer logo. If I try to select "boot" from the menu, that area of the screen goes black, and nothing else happens. I tried adding "nomodeset" to the boot arguments, but that did not affect anything. Are there any other boot arguments or anything else that could fix this?

• Windows 8 Start Screen: Show programs in order of most frequently used

  For me the Windows 8 Start Screen is just a great bit version of the old Start Menu, but unlike the Start Menu, it doesn't seem to order programs by frequency of use? Consider the following: While I DO use Chrome, Steam, and iTunes a lot. I've never ran Adobe Media Encoder, nor Adobe Extension Manager, nor Acrobat Distiller, or indeed most of the things on that list! Or there a way to change sorting to most frequently clicked on? Or perhaps even create FOLDERS in which to group items (e.g. "Adobe Apps" or "Games" or "Microsoft Office"?). Dragging them one at a time takes an age!

  I have installed Galera Cluster on 3 cluster + 1 management. I wanted to make it like this, Server1: Home (www.domain.com) Server2: For BBpress/Forum (Forum Tab Menu will forward to forum.domain.com) Server3: BuddyPress Activity (Social Tab Menu will forward to social.domain.com) The purpose I am doing this is to distribute my resource and load balancing each other at same time. However, I have difficulty to setup Apache Load-Balancing/mod_proxy/clustering or any suitable to have high availability WordPress. Any best suggestion/solution to make high availability WordPress? Or how to? And another question is I tried to copy whole WordPress files & folders to Server2 connecting to local database (same data inside since it is already on Galera Cluster) but the page blank. • Application windows have colossal fonts in Enlightenment 17, while system windows are untouched

  I'm trying to get used to using Enlightenment instead of KDE on my Slackware64 multilib computer, but I'm having a terrible time getting one problem fixed. My fonts are HUGE on application windows - from Firefox to Gimp to Xchat to anything else, all the fonts are 3x the size they should be. But at the same time, the system menu is the correct size. I'm at a loss - I want the applications to have the same DPI as the system menu. When I'm in KDE, they all look normal. I've included a screenshot to show what I'm talking about.

  We have a network with Windows 7 and OS X (10.5 and 10.6) computers. Our servers run on Windows Server 2003 (1 Small Business Server, 2 Standard). We need to be able to search through about 15.000 - 30.000 documents in our archives. The best solution would be if users can search directly from the Windows menu (on Windows 7) or the Spotlight menu (on OS X 10.5 and 10.6). Also good would be if users can search directly from the search bar in their browsers, or by first visiting a site with the search form. In case the users search through the browser, it's important they they are able to open a file in the search results just by clicking on it. I have tested Microsoft Search Server Express, but it doesn't meet the requirements (no OS X support, results in the browser can't be opened by clicking in anything but Internet Explorer). I have looked at Spotlight server, but that only supports OS X. Thanks!

  I've tried to input digraphs in Vim (without vi compatibility), and unfortunately I can't. After using ControlKP * it should input big greek pi letter. I've also tried using PBS * with :set digraph, but no success either. • Weird problem with keyboard

  I have a wireless bluetooth keyboard. Suddenly, something weird has started happening to it. If I press most of the alphabetic keys nothing happens, but some of the keys have gotten substituted for one another. For example if I press 'tab', its as if i hit 'enter', if I press 'enter' on num pad, it functions as tab. If i press 's' it functions as the right click menu button, and pressing the right click menu button functions as 's'. Ctrl and ALT buttons seem to be working as normal. The normal laptop keyboard is working fine, and the wireless mouse that came with the keyboard is also working fine, however the keyboard is what's messing up. Does anyone know what the prob is? I'm using Windows XP and 'Microsoft Intelli Keyboard' and mouse.

  I accidentally deleted Google as the default search engine from Chrome. This also caused the "Search Google for this image" item in the context menu of images to disappear. I tried to add it back by adding a search engine with these settings, which I copied from another machine: Name: Google Keyword: google.com URL: {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&{google:RLZ}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:assistedQueryStats}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:searchClient}{google:sourceId}{google:instantExtendedEnabledParameter}{google:omniboxStartMarginParameter}ie={inputEncoding} Unfortunately this does not bring back the "Search Google for this image" menu item, so there must be more to this entry than just Name, Keyword and URL.   I'm on a system with a Windows drive and an Ubuntu drive (both physical, not virtual). Under the Ubuntu Places menu, there is a "320 GB file system" which is the Windows disk. The same drive also appears as an icon on the desktop (but unlike everything else on the desktop, it does not appear in the directory listing of ~/Desktop). I think the icon was put on the desktop by accident and I never use it because the Places menu suffices. How can I delete this icon? Selecting then deleting does not work.

• Will Windows 7 setup overwrite Windows 8 and Ubuntu boot records?

  I have Windows 8 and Ubuntu installed, both an the same physical hd (2 partitions). Windows 8 was installed after a format, Ubuntu afterwards. I used EasyBCD to setup the boot records and the boot menu order. I want to install Windows 7 as a third operating system and just add its boot record with EasyBCD. Will there be any unwanted behavior when I install it on a third partition? I already have 100 GB of unallocated space on the disk, though have not yet made the partition. I red on this site that I should install the oldest OS first, but than I would have to do a format and start again from scratch (which I clearly do not want to do). edit: On this site, the opposite is claimed, saying it's also possible to install Windows 7 after Windows 8. However, it will restore a Windows 7 boot menu instead one of Windows 8.

  Hi, I'm trying to get my screen to turn off whenever I lock my screen. I know that in Power Management, there's an option to turn off the screen after a set amount of time, and I know about xset dpms force off, but the former doesn't allow me to turn off the screen from the logout menu, and the latter only turns the screen off for a short amount of time (1 minute or so. The screen just turns back on by itself). Is there a script I can modify to change what happens when "Lock screen" from the logout menu is selected, or is there a script I can add to the panel to lock the screen and then turn the monitor off (and turning it back on when I shake the mouse or something)? • Wamp server won't run [closed]

  win xp sp3 I installed wamp 2.2 and after starting it was allways orrange and offline. Clicking on "Put Online" I got the error: wampserver aestan tray menu - could not execute menu item (internal error)... Somewhere I found the advice to change httpd.conf file (Listen 80 - to Listen 8080) Now, mouseover try icon shows that server is online, but it is still orrange, and click on localhost shows: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost. Skype is not running and inside Skype options "Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections" is unchecked. A couple of months ago I was able to run wamp normaly. Could someone help, pls.

• Pausing a song in iTunes using the space bar no longer works after upgrade to Lion

  I used to be able to switch to iTunes using cmd-tab and press the space bar to pause a song as it was playing. This allowed me to to stop the song quickly when I was interrupted by a phone call. However, this no longer works. I can only go to the Controls menu item in iTunes and select Controls -- Pause. I do see that the menu item "Pause" is mapped to "space". When I press the space bar now with iTunes as the "active" application I just hear a tone. Recently I upgraded both Lion and iTunes so I am not quite sure which one stopped this from working properly. Does anyone know how to get this functionality back?

• Duplicating keepass files instead of creating a new file

  I'm currently using KeePass 2 and syncing them via dropbox. I have a few KeePass files (one for websites, one to store software licenses, etc...) Every time I need a new KeePass file, I just create a copy of the kbdx file, open it, remove all existing entries, change the key transformation rounds to another pseudo-random value. I do not change the master password. I want to know if this was unsafe practice, or was a security risk, compared to just creating a new KeePass file via the "File-New" menu. The reason I don't use the menu: i'm lazy enough to not want to reconfigure "database settings" every time.

• Installer can't create shortcuts - Vista Home Premium

  Suddenly, whenever I try to install something new on my system, all goes well until it gets to the point of creating Start Menu icons. At this point, I get an alert saying that the installer doesn't have permission to access the Start Menu folder, and my only options are Ignore, which just keeps triggering the same alert, and Cancel, which totally undoes the installation. I've tried disabling UAC (which is a feature I detest anyway), and running the installer as administrator from a R-click. Neither works. I also have 8 subfolders under my c:\users folder with various names, som of which I can look into and some which I cant. I have no idea where all this stuff came from, since I have a personal PC for home use and nobody uses it but me. Any suggestions, anyone? Thanx, T.E.Ponta

• Missing the "add tab group to favorites " option in IE8

  I have internet options selected for quick tabs and tab groups in settings, IE8 WIndows XP. I can open a list of favorites from the menu using the blue arrow as a tab group. I can then use the quick tabs button to show the groups open. However, I do not have the "add tab group to favorites" option in the pull down menu for favorites at the Favorite Bar. Is this a Vista feature only? I just checked two of my Vista basic machines SP2, one also does NOT have the option. The laptop DOES have the option.

• Desktop stops working in Windows 7

  I'm having an odd problem on one of my Windows 7 machines. At machine startup, explorer.exe is working properly - I can use the Start menu, click on desktop icons, etc. At some later point, though, I lose the ability to interact with desktop icons. I can't double-click to open files on the desktop, and I can't right-click to see the properties window. Oddly enough the Start menu still works properly, and I can still open an Explorer window into my desktop and access everything. I can get around the problem by killing explorer.exe and restarting it using Task Manager, but it's annoying to have to do this over and over. Does anyone have any ideas? I took a look at startup files with msconfig and didn't see any obvious problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Get lots of javascript problems when using Opera 11.00 to surf

  Sites like ebay and even superuser stop working properly when I use opera 11.00. Menus stop working everywhere from ebay to godaddy. Hovering on a menu item doesn't expand it, no sub menu slides out. This makes a large number of very popular websites unusable. Am I right in assuming this is a javascript issue? I use opera for the turbo feature (I have tested opera with and without turbo so it's not turbo's fault) because I'm on mobile broadband until I get my phone line sorted out. Turbo helps me save money, as well as allowing me to surf at a sane speed. Is there a firefox or chrome equivalent to opera turbo that doesn't cost money? I'm using Opera 11.00, build 1156.

• Why can't I open programs after watching youtube videos for a while?

  I have recently built a new PC, and it worked fine for a while (1-2 months of no problems whatsoever). However in the recent weeks I noticed that after I watched some youtube videos and closed everything, I can no longer do anything except move the mouse and expand the Startup Menu. If I click on any of the programs on the Start Menu or type a program on the Run text box, it won't open anything. I can't open taskmgr, or windows explorer, or even shut down the PC. I don't have anything else running when I'm watching videos except ZoneAlarm and Avast. The only workaround I can do when this happens is a forced shutdown (holding the power button of my PC), and restart if I wanted to do anything more. But this happens a lot - about 4-5 times a week so I'm worried it would fry up my hardware if I keep on doing this. • Is it possible to make a (Windows 7) executable automatically run when I put in my thumb drive?

  I have portable apps on a thumbdrive, and want to automatically run the "menu" app (E:\Applications\Windows\Start.exe) when I insert that drive. I realize (or think I realize, based on a foggy memory of trying to find a way to do this some time ago) that it can no longer be done with the old autorun approach, at least not in Windows 7. But there must be some other way: maybe a daemon process that waits for the thumbdrive to be inserted, and then fires up the .exe file? Maybe a daemon that tries every five minutes or so to launch the menu, and doesn't make a fuss when it's not there. Maybe something else? How can I achieve this?

• an issue with VMWare Workstation 10 and three monitors

  I'm having a bit of a problem with using three monitors with VMWare Workstation 10. When only two monitors are enabled in the system I have an option to "Cycle Multiple Monitors", available from the View menu (in full screen). When I enable the third monitor that option is no longer in the menu and I can only use one monitor at a time. I've found this article and a "Choose a Monitor Layout" button is mentioned there but I'm unable to see it anywhere. I'm using Windows 8.1 as the host and Ubuntu 14.04 as the guest. The graphics card is AMD Radeon R9 290x with latest beta drivers
