• .NET Framework 4.0 installation is very slow

  On my Windows Vista, it takes a full 12 minutes to install the .NET Framework 4.0. a) Is this normal? b) If not, can something be done about it? The reason I'm concerned about the speed is because it slows down the testing of our product installer considerably. Testing an installer is time consuming already, but this new .NET Framework installer makes it almost undoable. Detail: I did the test on a clean Vista inside a VirtualBox virtual machine. This setup does not show any performance issues in other situations. I tried both dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe and dotNetFx40_Client_x86_x64.exe. They both take approximately the same time to install.

• HP Envy webcam pictures all purple

  I have a new HP Envy 15 with an integrated webcam, running Win 7. It works, but all the images are purple, suggesting to me that the red and blue guns are working, but the green isn't. The problem shows up on both their own software and on Skype. I talked to tech support, and they had me update the BIOS, reinstall the hardware BIOS for the webcam, and update the webcam software. It therefore sounds like a hardware problem, but they won't back that unless I do a full restore, which would wipe my disk of all the software I've spent the last couple of weeks configuring. Is there anything else I can try? Other than just buying another webcam, I mean. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My config is as follows: service tftp { protocol = udp port = 69 socket_type = dgram wait = yes user = nobody server = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd server_args = -s /svr/tftp disable = no } the directory /svr/tftp permissions are 777: drwxrwxrwx 3 nobody nobody 4096 Nov 14 10:32 svr This thing should have full permissions as would anyone who wanted to write or read from that directory. I see nothing in the logs im really stumped on this. If the file is already in the directory I can read it all day long, I just cant make NEW files, can not put them, but I can do get's, I can only put to an existing file with permissions @777. Thanks

• HTML5 game engine for a 2D or 2.5D RPG style "map walk"

  please help me to choose a HTML5 game engine or Javascript libraries I want to do the following in the game: when the game starts a part the huge map (full size of the map: about 7 screens) is shown. The map itself is completely designed in the editor mapeditor.org (or in some comparable editor - if you know a good alternative to mapeditor.org - let me know) and loaded at runtime or at design time. The game engine should support loading of isometric maps (well, in worst case only orthogonal maps will be sufficient) both "tile layer" and "object layer" from mapeditor.org should be supported. Scrolling/performance of this map should be fast enough. The map and the game should be either in 2D (orthogonal map) or in 2.5D (isometric map) The game engine should support movement of sprites with animation. Let say I have a sprite for "human" with animation sequences showing "walking" in 8 directions - it should be imported into game engine and should "walk" on the map without writing a lot of Javascript code. Automatic scrolling of the map the "human" nears the screen border. Collision detection, "solid" objects. The mapeditor.org supports properies on tiles. Let say I assign a "solid" property to some tiles in editor. It should be easy to check this "solid" property in the game engine and implement kind of "solid" behavior, so the animanted sprites do not walk through the walls. Collision detection - it should be easy to implement some custom functionality like "when sprite A is close to sprite B - call this function" Showing "dialogs" or popup windows on top of the map - should be easy to implement. • Firefox 12's hardware acceleration on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  After I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32 bits), Firefox 12 works fine but without hardware acceleration. Needless to say I have the latest nVidia's proprietary drivers installed and my Firefox Preferences, on "Advanced" tab, "Browsing" section, have the option "Use hardware acceleration when available" checked. I have tried the following things before asking this question: Creating a boolean key "webgl.force-enabled" and set it to true on Firefox's page about:config; Starting a new profile like commented on thread Mozilla Firefox 12 is very slow on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS; I have updated my nVidia driver to version 295.53. And none of this have worked. As you can see below in my Firefox's page about:support report, "Graphics" section shows no "GPU Accelerated Windows": Adapter Description NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Vendor ID NVIDIA Corporation Device ID GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Driver Version 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 WebGL Renderer NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 -- 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 GPU Accelerated Windows 0 AzureBackend skia I use the following site to test hardware acceleration: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/FishBowl/ On Windows 7 I get 60 fps even with 1,750 fishes on browser's Full Screen Mode (1680x1050x32bit-color).   I am looking for hints/ideas for the best (most effective) way on how to scroll multi-line items as well as emphasizing of the "current item" and "selected items" such as: 1 FOO ITEM 1 Foo sub-item 2 Foo sub-item 3 Foo sub-item 2 BAR ITEM 1 Bar sub-item 3 BAZ ITEM 1 Baz sub-item 2 Baz sub-item 4 RAB ITEM 5 ZZZ ITEM 1 Zzz sub-item 2 Zzz sub-item 3 Zzz sub-item 4 Zzz sub-item using NCurses (some combination of windows, sub-windows, pads, copywin? Uff! In fact, the lines could exceed the stdscr's width so that possibility to scroll left/right would be also nice - pads?)... The whole items (including the sub-items) are supposed to be emphasized as full-width window/pad areas. The "current item" (including it's set of lines) should be emphasized (i.e. using A_BOLD), selected set of items of choice (including the set of lines for each the selected item) should be emphasized in another way (i.e. using A_REVERSE). What would you choose to cope with it the most effective NCurses way? (The less redrawals/refreshes the better and terminal is supposed to have the ability to change it's size - such as XTerm running under "floating window" management.) Thank you for your ideas (or perhaps some piece of code where something similar is already solved - I was not able to find anything helpful on the Internet. I mean I am not going to copy/paste foreign code but programming NCurses properly is still somehow difficult to me). P.S.: Would you suggest to "smooth-scroll" +1/-1 screen line or rather "jump-scroll" +lines/-lines of the items? (I personally prefer the latter one.) Sincerely, -- mjf

• Intel turbo boost - in reality

  I have an Intel i7-3630QM processor in my laptop. Its speed is supposed to be from 2.4 to 3.4 GHz in turbo boost mode. In reality, will it ever run all cores on full speed (3.4GHz mentioned above) at the same time? I heard somewhere that this additional 1GHz is shared between all cores in laptops. If the boost is 1GHz per core it's pretty impressive (over 40% speed up). What does it really look like? How long can a processor run in turbo mode?

• VMWare Server 2 Install is Failing w/ Error 25032: "failed to customize windows logon process"

  VMWare Server 2 install question here.* Straightforward question that would probably require a VMWare expert to pull apart, given that Google has been totally worthless on this. On a patched Windows XP machine, any attempt to install VMWare Server 2.0.1 results in failure, just prior to completion (progress bar is full but I can tell network adapter stuff hasn't been fired yet and most of the services haven't been instaled). The error: Error 25032. Failed to customize Windows logon process (). Please contact your administrator. Upon dismissing the error, you're treated to: Warning 25033. Failed to remove Windows logon customization (VMGINA.DLL). Please contact your administrator. Clicking "OK" rolls back your installation. Killing the installer and hoping that it somehow leaves a working install behind was also unproductive. *I hope install troubleshooting isn't outside the purview of serverfault, I'm typically an SO user.

• Does OneNote have palm rejection or a hand rest spot?

  I just bought an Acer Iconia W500. I really wanted to use it for taking notes and having all the amenities of a full blown computer without the size. Using OneNote to take notes, I notice I can't rest my hand on the screen. I have read some about this and it seems the very best solution is to get a tablet with active digitizer technology, but there aren't too many with this and it is expensive. So barring that, is there any way I can rest my hand on the tablet screen while taking notes in OneNote? Or am I relegated to hovering my hand over the screen while I write notes? Does OneNote have a palm rest area or some sort of palm rejection?

• Why is windows 7 marking all my extra RAM as "hardware reserved"?

  I have a new HP Z800 Workstation, running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. The machine has 4GB of RAM -- windows reported 1.99GB available, 2GB was "hardware reserved". I added another 2 GB and windows reports that there is 6GB of physical RAM, but now 4GB is "hardware reserved". The BIOS sees the full RAM amount as well. The video card is an nVida Quadro FX 580, so it shouldn't be using any shared memory at all. whats going on? Z800 Specs are here.

• Which Linux book for aspiring sysadmin?

  I have a co-worker who insists that he will never buy a book unless it is considered "THE" book. So, in this vein, I thought I'd ask what the ultimate Linux book is. I wouldn't quite call myself a complete beginner since I can get around in Linux in general pretty well. But, beyond that, I'm also looking for a book with an eye towards becoming a Sys Admin someday. I saw a Junior Sys Admin position open up recently but with the requisite 2-3 years experience, I may have to wait a little while longer before I'm ready to apply for such a position. Having said all that, I'll summarize my question: What is the ultimate Linux book for someone who is ok with the basic tasks of getting around in Linux but also wants to aim towards full Sys Admin status someday? I have an assignment I'm working on where I've been given a scenario where a business wants to look into transitioning to using "Internet Telephone" as opposed to a traditional PSTN/PBX system and I need to write a report on it. I'm after some high level pointers from people, especially anyone that has been involved in a real life transition of this nature, on what some of the most important considerations are. These can be financial considerations, initial setup considerations, ongoing administrative considerations, quality of service considerations or anything else that is pertinent to performing such a transition.

• Per-vertex animation with VBOs: VBO per character or VBO per animation?

  Goal To leverage the richness of well vetted animation tools such as Blender to do the heavy lifting for a small but rich set of animations. I am aware of additive pose blending like that from Naughty Dog and similar techniques but I would prefer to expend a little RAM/VRAM to avoid implementing a thesis-ready pose solver. I would also like to avoid implementing a key-frame + interpolation curve solver (reinventing Blender vertex groups and IPOs), if possible. Scenario Meshes are animated using either skeletons (skinned animation) or some form of morph targets (i.e. per-vertex key frames). However, in either case, the animations are known in full at load-time, that is, there is no physics, IK solving, or any other form of in-game pose solving. The number of character actions (animations) will be limited but rich (hand-animated). There may be multiple characters using a each mesh and its animations simultaneously in-game (they will likely be at different frames of the same animation at the same time). Assume color and texture coordinate buffers are static. Current Considerations Much like a non-shader-powered pose solver, create a VBO for each character and copy vertex and normal data to each VBO on each frame (VBO in STREAMING). Create one VBO for each animation where each frame (interleaved vertex and normal data) is concatenated onto the VBO. Then each character simply has a buffer pointer offset based on its current animation frame (e.g. pointer offset = (numVertices+numNormals)*frameNumber). (VBO in STATIC) Known Trade-Offs In 1 above: Each VBO would be small but there would be many VBOs and therefore lots of buffer binding and vertex copying each frame. Both client and pipeline intensive. In 2 above: There would be few VBOs therefore insignificant buffer binding and no vertex data getting jammed down the pipe each frame, but each VBO would be quite large. Are there any pitfalls to number 2 (aside from finite memory)? I've found a lot of information on what you can do, but no real best practices. Are there other considerations or methods that I am missing?

• Computer Science Programming Certificate vs. Computer Science Degree?

  I'm kind of in a tough spot. My current living conditions require that I work a full-time job while attending school. I've attended a UC in the past but had to withdraw my junior year due to financial issues at home. I currently work an entry-level IT corp job but I'm looking to further my salary/skills by getting a degree, or a programming certificate like this one: http://www.lavc.edu/voced1/CSITCertCSP/CSITCertFrameCSP.htm Herein lies the problem. I prefer getting a CS degree from an accredited university but I looked at the schedules for classes and it is impossible to work around my current 40/hr work week. There are random morning classes, with the occasional evening class, but the times get even more construed as I move my way up to the upper divisions. So what I guess I'm trying to get at is, can anyone lay out the pros and cons of obtaining a certificate vs. the degree (besides obvious points like the latter being 100x better)? I'm aware that having a degree is always going to be a better route, but...is the programming certificate useless? Should I not even bother?

• php APC uptime problem

  I am on LAMP with Alternative PHP Cache. It worked fine until yesterday when I updated the website and changed a few mySQL queries (I don't see the how it would affect APC opcode cache) Today I see that the load has increased on the server and I see in Alternative PHP Cache, that the uptime of APC is somewhere around 15 minutes then it gets restarted. At this point the APC cache is only about 20% full of the available 30Mb. Using for opcode cache only. During this 15 minutes the cache works fine (99,8% cache hits). After this unwanted restart the APC cache is empty. Why is it restarting? Where can I find the logs for it? Thanks, Hamlet

  Hi, I bought a BlackArmor 220 from Seagate. When I start Snow Leopard the NAS shows up with its full name under shares. The problem is that when I click the NAS only a folder BA_Backup shows up, all the other folders, I created, don't. When I click the NAS, it says I'm connected as "guest". I mean I can connect by "Go to server" and additionally add the folders to the user startup objects, so they show up when I start my Mac, but when the NAS already shows up, why can't I configure it? This subject took me in past – my past. There were various things, I had done or proposed when I started very first month as a DBA trainee. I was tagged along with very senior DBA in my organization who always protected me or correct my mistake. He was great guy and totally understand the young mind of over-enthusiastic Trainee DBA. I respect him very much. Here are few things which I had learned in my very first month (not necessarily I have practices them on production). Never compress (zip) native backup using any tools, when disaster happen sometime the extra time to un-compress the database can be too long and not acceptable for business SLA Do not truncate logs After restoring full database backup – only restore latest differential back, no need to restore all the backup Always write WHERE condition when deleting and updating Sr. DBA always advised me – always keep your résumé ready and car ready – you never know when you can not recover disaster!   I pay monthly for a website hosting service that provides me with PHP and FTP support. I can upload my files and create directories and such. Now, I am wondering... If I upload a folder full of images.. or music.. basically personal stuff to my website and name it 'junk1234' can other people find it? Or even search engines? If so, How would I restrict any but those who know the folder name from seeing files in it? Possibly httaccess files? I also have cpanel installed.

• Acer Aspire One 725 - missing graphic card driver?

  Recently I bought an Acer Aspire One 725 Netbook and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. I bought it, because it can run HD movies and has Full HD on external VGA port. However, movies from youtube have a really slow framerate. If you open three tabs in Opera (for example g-mail, youtube and askubuntu) it gets really laggy. My suspicion is that the driver for graphic card is missing. When I check the System->Details->Graphics the driver is unknown. After running lspci | grep VGA I get this output: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 980a From what I see, I have a AMD C70 processor integrated with (or something similar) AMD Radeon HD 6290. Has anyone had the same problem? Do you know which drivers need to be installed for the graphics to work properly? On official Acer page there are only drivers for Win7 and Win8... • Slow git clone and fetch

  I setuped gitosis on a linux server following this tutorial: http://scie.nti.st/2007/11/14/hosting-git-repositories-the-easy-and-secure-way We are using git on our windows machines with TortoiseGit and msysgit. Pushing changes to the server is pretty fast, but when we want to clone or fetch changes from the remote server, it begins really fast (800k/s) and then drop pretty fast to around 3 to 30k/s and it can take forever to update. git-pull for small update is fast, but as soon as we have to download something of more than a few MB, it is slow. We are switching from SVN to git and this is holding us back from using git full time. Thanks!

• Checking if your SIMPLE databases need a log backup

  Hopefully you have read the blog by William Durkin explaining why your SIMPLE databases need a log backup in some cases. There is a SQL Server bug that means in some cases databases are marked as being in SIMPLE RECOVERY but have a log wait type that shows they are not properly configured. Please read his blog for the full explanation and a great description of how to reproduce the issue. As part of our (William happens to be my Boss) work to recover our affected databases I wrote this small PowerShell script to quickly check our servers for databases that needed the attention that William details.  cls $Servers = “Server01″,”Server02″,”etc”,”etc” foreach($Server in $Servers){ write-host “************” $server “****************”     $server = New-Object Microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.server $Server     foreach($db in $Server.databases){         $db | where {$_.RecoveryModel -eq “Simple” -and $_.logreusewaitstatus -ne “nothing”} | select name, LogReuseWaitStatus     } } If you get any results from this query then you should consult Williams blog for the details on what action you should take. This script does give out false positives if in some circumstances depending on how busy your databases are. Hopefully this will let you check your servers quickly and if you find any problems you can reference Williams blog to understand what you need to do.

• Upgrading Visual Studio 2010

  I have been running Visual Studio 2010 as my main development studio on my development computer since the RC was released. I need to upgrade that to the RTM, but first I need to remove it. Microsoft have done a lot of work to make this easy, and it works. Its as easy as uninstalling from the control panel. I have had may previous versions of Visual Studio 2010 on this same computer with no need to rebuild to remove all the bits. Figure: Run the uninstall from the control panel to remove Visual Studio 2010 RC Figure: The uninstall removes everything for you.  Figure: A green tick means the everything went OK. If you get a red cross, try installing the RTM anyway and it should warn you with what was not uninstalled properly and you can remove it manually.   Once you have VS2010 RC uninstalled installing should be a breeze. The install for 2010 is much faster than 2008. Which could take all day, and then some on slower computers. This takes around 20 minutes even on my small laptop. I always do a full install as although I have to do c# I sometimes get to use a proper programming language VB.NET. Seriously, there is nothing worse than trying to open a project and the other developer has used something you don't have. Its not their fault. Its yours! Save yourself the angst and install Fully, its only 5.9GB. Figure: I always select all of the options.   Now go forth and develop! • How do I perform multi-window operations on a non-combined group of windows in Windows 7?

  With multiple windows/instances of an application open and the taskbar buttons set to "Always combine, hide labels", I can Shift + right-click the taskbar button for the window group to open a menu allowing me to "Cascade", "Show windows stacked", "Show windows side by side", "Restore all windows", "Minimize all windows", or "Close all windows". With the taskbar buttons set to "Combine when taskbar is full" or "Never combine", when I right-click, Shift + right-click, or Ctrl + right-click either the button or the Aero preview for a window in the group I get a menu allowing me to perform window operations on just that one window rather than each window in the group. When I have a non-combined group of windows in the taskbar, how would I cascade, stack, etc. that group of windows?
