• Windows shared printers: Process job on server machine, not the client

  Hi. While working with Linux clients to Windows SMB/CIFS filesharing servers, from time to time I find myself having to print to a printer with no drivers available under Linux. For some reason, the Windows computer expects the job to be sent in an already processed format, so it can be fed directly to the printer in its own, weird language. It would be great if I could send the print job in Postscript or other standard format to the Windows computer sharing this printer, and then this PS could be processed under Windows. Is there a way to accomplish this? Because I don't seem to find the option. Thanks a lot.

• Installing and maintaining an email server

  I need to move hosting providers for four or five domains and for several reasons I'm considering a Linux VPS rather than staying with my current shared, managed hosting provider. The only thing that's stopping me is email. I have lots of experience running and maintaining Apache, but none with email servers. Based on some research, if I want to keep what I've using now, it looks like I'd be going with Postfix and Dovecot, and probably Exim and SpamAssassin. I have no problem performing regular maintenance and watching for security updates, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. For someone new to email services, how hard is it to set up an email server that is externally accessible (via SMTP and POP3, not IMAP), available over SSL/TLS and reasonably reliable for multiple domains? How much of a time commitment is it to maintain one?

• How is my ISP DNS hijacking AFTER all these precautions?

  In IE9 when I search for anything my ISP hijacks google search and I get this result. To add complication to this I've already changed the default DNS servers (OpenDNS) months ago. This only happens in IE9; even after machine reboots and cache flushing. I even have my router (dd-wrt) intercepting all requests for DNS and I am still getting this result. I have all extensions disabled and there are no toolbars. This is IE9 from M$. This is not malware; it happens all machines with IE installed (even IE7/8).

• Group Policy Task Schedule deployed to User Configuration not working, works when in Computer Configuration?

  I added a Scheduled Task on my Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controller in the Group Policy Manager: MyDomain Policy User Configuration Preferences Control Panel Settings Scheduled Tasks Basic Task, like starting notepad, when user unlocks his workstation. This should show up in the client workstation's task scheduler, but it dosn't. No errors or anything like that. If I use the "Computer Configuration" instead of "User Configuration" the task appears, and I'm able to run the task. I've tried the gpupdate /force followed by gpresult and checked the report, but it dosn't contain the GPO Scheduled Tasks I created? (again, does show up when using "Computer Configuration".) The issue is that I have to run the application in the current users context, and only on a specific Employee OU, and thereby limit this task only to Employee Workstations and not apply the application when the same employee log on to internal servers and such. Primary domain dontroller is a Windows 2008 R2, workstations Windows 7 Enterprise. What am I doing wrong ?

On my laptop, if I set it to use the IP address of my server as the DNS server, then it works as expected. The problem with that is that I use my laptop outside my home network and I need to switch it back to automatic. Setup is like this: ISP Router running DD-WRT Win 2012 DC/DNS and other network computers How can I have my laptop find the DNS server automatically instead of using my ISP's DNS servers?

• Windows Scheduled Tasks losing password configuration

  I have a couple of jobs scheduled to run daily on a customer server running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, SP1 using Windows Scheduled Tasks. The tasks are set to run as a user that is in the Administrators group, and were scheduled as that same user. The password of that user is set to never expire. These tasks fail to run pretty much every day. Going into Scheduled Tasks and attempting to run the tasks manually indicates that the password is incorrect. I go into the task properties, retype the password into the appropriate fields, click OK, and attempt to run the task manually again. Now it works fine. What might be the cause of the password being lost like this? These same tasks are running on other customers servers with no problems. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

• Remote Desktop settings not being applied for user

  We have a number of Win 2003 servers for which we have Remote Desktop enabled. Each user has their profile edited so that they can only connect for 2 hours maximum and have 30 minutes idle time, after which they are disconnected and the session closed. On one server however, the administrator account does not have the maximum session limit working. We can stay connected for days if we want. Originally this was how it was setup, and we later changed the profile for all users so that there are limits. We have rebooted the server a couple of times since, and the Management Console shows the limits. If we are idle for too long we are disconnected. Other users are having all the limits observed. Any suggestions?

  When servers need to have scheduled downtime at my workplace we follow a process roughly like the following: Propose time for work to take place on specific box/s Lookup list of stakeholders for specific box/s Seek approval from stakeholders (service owners/management etc) via email Incorporate changes to proposed time if necessary, repeat step 2 until.. Now everyone is happy with the time, send out a notification via email of the time, ask Staff who care about when the box is going down manually add it to their calendars some stakeholders the staff doing the work Do the actual work Is there an OSS project that we could use to automate this process? My googling has been fruitless so far. Will we need to build something ourselves? Would anyone else be interested in something like this?

• Wildcard SSL Certificates with Exchange 2010?

  Is anyone using a Wildcard Cert with Exchange 2010 please? We currently have a bunch of individual whatever.domain.com SSL certificates and as several are expiring soon it would be an ideal opportunity to move to a wildcard certificate. At some point though we will be moving from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, and I've read conflicting reports over whether wildcard certs work with Exchange 2010 as many guides seem to recommend a UCC/SAN certificate. Our internal DNS domain name is the same as our external domain name. Godaddy look like good VFM given they allow use on unlimited physical servers. Thanks in advance.

• Firefox https problem with localhost

  I administer half a dozen servers with (among other things) Webmin. I connect to Webmin via ssh tunnel to port 10000. All of my Webmins run in https mode. Firefox from version 3.6.6. refuses to load my https://localhost:10000 pages claiming SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) Why is this problem NOW? It was working fine (annoying with certificate errors, but working) but now it is not working at all. I must have Google Chrome installed so I can connect to Webin.

  I try to use rockmongo, to connect to our cluster. Our setup is a setup of two shards each consisting of a replicaset. I try to connect to the mongos instance and while rockmongo connects I get an error when trying to list the dbs: Execute failed:not master function (){ return db.getCollectionNames(); } This has something to do with the replica sets and everybody points to: $MONGO["servers"][$i] = array("replicaSet" => "xxxxx"); This is all fine, but I have two replicasets and as far as I understand I should connect to the mongos instance and not directly to the members of the set. So how does one use rockmongo to connect to a mongo sharded setup with replicasets?

• Implications and benefits of removing NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM from sysadmin role?

  Disclaimer: I am not a DBA. I am a database developer. A DBA just sent a report to our data stewards and is planning to remove the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM account from the sysadmin role on a bunch of servers. (The probably violate some audit report they received). I see a MSKB article that says not to do this. From what I can tell reading a variety of disparate information on the web, a bunch of special services/operations (Volume Copy, Full Text Indexing, MOM, Windows Update) use this account even when the SQL Server and Agent service etc are all running under dedicated accounts.

• Graphing services using pnp4nagios

  Hi! I've managed to install pnp4nagios 0.6.3 and I'm a bit confused about how pnp4nagios generates graphics. Almost out of the box, it started graphs for ping and some http servers (not all of them). But, how can I make it graph things like disk utilization (When that value comes from SNMP)?? For example, ls /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata/isis/ Cola_de_Mail.rrd Cola_de_Mail.xml HTTP.rrd HTTP.xml PING.rrd PING.xml Those are checks running on the host isis, but there are many other checks for that server that are not taken into account by pnp4nagios. How can I make pnp4nagios "see" the other checks?? Thanks!

• Apache - how to serve pages with users other than www-data

  I have a webserver that uses apache. When I do a ls -l on /var/www/project1/public_html and /var/www/project2/public_html, I see that they are owned by projectuser1 and projectuser2 respectively. On some of other servers I've looked at, both /var/www/project1/public_html and /var/www/project2/public_html are owned by only www-data. How would I go about changing these ownerships to projectuser1 and projectuser2 such that these new users can login to their areas and manage their own websites? I created a user projectuser1 then did a chown -R projectuser1 /var/www/project1, but any time projectuser1 adds a new file to the directory, Apache gives me a Permission Error. If do a chown -R www-data /var/www/project1, then everything works again. Ultimately, I want apache to serve the /var/www/project1 directory with projectuser1 owning it.

• Advantages of Terminal Server instead of normal client-Server installation?

  What are the advantages of using a (Windows) Terminal Server and thin clients instead of using a normal Server and full clients? So far I've only really used normal servers and clients, but now customers ask about terminal Server, and I'd like to know pro's and con's of using them instead of an "old-fashioned" client-server network. Some things I can guess: easier administration (don't need to install/update office/stuff on 20 computers but only on the server). Easier backup (no need to backup client computers). And I'd guess it would be hard (impossible) to connect and use local (like USB) hardware with Terminal Server? What else are the reasons for or against switching to Terminal Server?

• Mysql hosting for application backend

  I've been asked to help set up a way for a volunteer animal rescue organization to use an application to keep track of animals they've rescued. This application already exists, and can use it's own local database or connect to a MySQL database server. Since there are several volunteers spread out over a large region, a database server would be the best way to go. Money is a big problem, obviously. So, I'm looking for a very cheap or hopefully free database server or webhost that allows tcp/ip connections to their database servers. Backups will be handled on our end, so basically I just need the hosted mysql server. I've seen 000webhost.com, x10hosting, and xtreemhost, which all look promising, but they either aren't clear on remote mysql connections, or don't allow it at all.   Our software development team is growing very quickly. We have around 250 developers working on about 20 different projects. The majority of development is focused around Visual Studio. The release management procedure is getting a little strained now, with users competing for time and resources on various "official" build and signing servers. What I'm looking for is information on how to setup a proper, managed release process in a Microsoft environment. Ideally, I'd like some kind of continuous integration or nightly builds, integration of version control into Visual Studio and the ability to sign binaries after QA is complete. I guess what I'm looking for is any documentation or white papers on Release Management in a Visual Studio environment. Can anyone help?

• Authentication problem: can't bypass the login prompt when browsing to the SQL Reporing Services website

  I'm having a hard time configuring Reporting services on one of our servers. I'm not uninitiated in the domain of IIS7 but I cannot get rid of the login prompt when I'm surfing to the Reporting services website. What I did: I made a windows and SQL user with the same name: Then I choose Anonymous authentication in II7 and filled in the credentials of the specific R.S. user http://img32.imageshack.us/i/iis7auth.jpg/ I choose 'Local Service' as the service account in the R.S. configuration mgr http://img88.imageshack.us/i/rsconfigmgr.jpg/ The first problem is that there's always a pop-up when surfing to the website The second is that when I'm able to log in I get the message that the user doesn't have the appropriate permissions.   I have a project with a 2TB database ( 450.000.000 rows). I need to provide to the proyect a solution that gives FailOver and load Balacing, what do you recommend? We are going to use a NetApp Filer for the Data Files and for the File System of the Proyect. I read that SQl Clustering does not provide load balacing. If I cannnot have this feature and I have to go only to the FailOver what Server ( I presume that the key feature here is memory) would you recomend. We are adding 1.000.000 rows a day. Once the rows is inserted we are doing a lot of updates to that row for about 1 week then the row get static. Because of this I am thinking in some kind of history table or database or something like that. • Easy Deployment Split Tunnel VPN Connection

  I was wondering if anybody could offer some insight as to how I can mass deploy VPN connection settings that support split tunneling. It has to work on both Mac and Windows systems though if a script is used, it obviously can be 2 separate scripts for both platforms. I will be setting up a Windows server with a file server and Exchange server and to access the file server I will have the clients go through VPN because we will have sensitive data. I don't want the servers network to be bogged down with the clients normal internet traffic so I will be needing some way to setup split tunneling on the clients without them having to put in a few commands every time to setup the static routes. Ive looked at Cisco VPN client but I want to try and stick with windows RRAS and avoid buying a Cisco VPN endpoint. Im basically looking for a good VPN client that can support split tunneling and mass deployment.

• Cannot upgrade to Lion using DVD

  When I first setup my MBP on 10.6 I made a lot of newb mistakes, and was unable to get Ruby on Rails to install, amongst a lot of other things. Because of this, I decided to backup everything on to a Time Machine HDD and re-install Lion. I had a bunch of problems but managed to sort them out, requiring me to go back to 10.6 from the original disc that came with the MBP. Before I did anything however, I burnt the Lion installer that I got from the App Store to a DVD. Now though, when I try to run it, I get the following: Cannot download additional components. I've managed to download software updates, so I know it can connect to the Apple servers.

• Slow IE8 Start-up due to LDAP DNS queries

  Recently (in the last few days), my installation of IE8 has been taking 15 to 20 seconds to load my home page. Specifically, the sequence of events (as reported by WireShark) is:- Browser issues a DNS A query to resolve the home page server's IP address. Browser then spends the next 15-20 seconds broadcasting DNS SRV _LDAP._TCP queries, (roughly on a 2 second tick) to which it receives no answer (we have no LDAP servers). Browser re-issues the DNS A query and resolves the server's IP address again. Finally, the browser issues an HTTP GET for the home page. Does anyone know why this is happening? • Fix a tomcat6 error message "/bin/bash already running" when starting tomcat?

  I have a Ubuntu 10.04 machine that has tomcat6 on it. When I start tomcat6 with /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start I get * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 /bin/bash already running. and the server fails to start. Unfortunately, there is nothing in /var/log/tomcat/catalina.out to help debug the issue. With some cleverly placed echo statements it seems to be the line from /etc/init.d/tomcat6: start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \ -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \ -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH" The only thing I've changed in this script is TOMCAT6_USER=root. In servers.xml, the only thing I've changed is <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1" from port 8080. I have tried reinstalling the package by first removing everything sudo apt-get --purge remove tomacat6 and then sudo apt-get install tomcat6 but this has not solved the issue. I have also restarted the server multiple times in hopes of some magic. Everything was working until I restarted my server. Any ideas?

• sharepoint administrative server not started causing sharepoint deployment instability

  When i deploy anything to a variety of sharepoint servers i get problems with some packages failing, from what i can see the only error given is as below. The timer job for this operation has been created, but it will fail because the administrative service for this server is not enabled. If the timer job is sched uled to run at a later time, you can run the jobs all at once using stsadm.exe - o execadmsvcjobs. To avoid this problem in the future, enable the Windows ShareP oint Services administrative service, or run your operation through the STSADM.e xe command line utility. Is this a known problem? I googled for the text but got only one other person with the problem who simply worked round it. I'm trying to batch deploy solutions programmatically and so these errors render the whole code worthless if you have to go back and redo bits by hand afterwards. Is batch deployment simply not possible? Thanks!
