• Arduino crashes when sending bytes from Java [on hold]

  I used the sample program from the arduino website in order to send and receive data via serial to my Arduino one. However, for some reason, even when I try to send only one byte, the Arduino crashes after a while. It doesn't happen if I send the chars manually via the IDE's own serial monitor. Basically, all I want to do is to store latitudes and longitudes which GPS positioning functions outputs and display them in a list using ListActivity on different tab later on. • Why is processing a sorted array faster than an unsorted array?

  Here is a piece of code that shows some very peculiar performance. • wxPthon problems with Wrapping StaticText

  Hello. I am having an issue with wxPython. A simplified version of the code is posted below (white space, comments, etc removed to reduce size - but the general format to my program is kept roughly the same). When I run the script, the static text correctly wraps as it should, but the other items in the panel do not move down (they act as if the statictext is only one line and thus not everything is visible). If I manually resize the window/frame, even just a tiny amount, everything gets corrected and displays as it is should. I took screen shots to show this behavior, but I just created this account and thus don't have the required 10 reputation points to be allowed to post pictures. Why does it not display correctly to begin with? I've tried all sorts of combination's of GetParent().Refresh() or Update() and GetTopLevelParent().Update() or Refresh(). I've tried everything I can think of but cannot get it to display correctly without manually resizing the frame/window. Once re-sized, it works exactly as I want it to. • "Could not establish secure channel for SSL/TLS" in .NET CF application on smart phone

  I have a stubborn communications issue with an application running on the .NET Compact Framework 3.5 on Windows Mobile smartphones. I am constructing a web request using this code: UTF8Encoding encoding = new System.Text.UTF8Encoding(); byte[] Data = encoding.GetBytes(HttpUtility.ConstructQueryString(parameters)); httpRequest = WebRequest.Create((domain)) as HttpWebRequest; httpRequest.Timeout = 10000000; httpRequest.ReadWriteTimeout = 10000000; httpRequest.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials; httpRequest.Method = "POST"; httpRequest.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"; httpRequest.ContentLength = Data.Length; Stream SendReq = httpRequest.GetRequestStream(); SendReq.Write(Data, 0, Data.Length); SendReq.Close(); HttpWebResponse httpResponse = (HttpWebResponse)httpRequest.GetResponse(); return httpResponse.GetResponseStream(); The web service functions by receiving a JSON-encoded document as part of the URL (eg. https://site.com/ws/sync??document={"version":"1.0.0","items":[{"item_1":"item1"}]}&user=usr&password=pw), and as a response receives another JSON document as response data. This code runs fine on all emulators and PDAs running WM 5 and 6. We have seen an issue with a couple of customers running Treo smartphones (and only on the Sprint network). We have tested the code on an identical device on the AT&T network (via DeviceAnywhere) and once again the code worked as we expected. This has to be some sort of security policy on the phone, but we've been unable to determine a workaround or diagnose it thoroughly as we cannot reproduce it in house and have had to resort to getting users to assist with running test drivers for us. When this code executes, the user's device throws the following exception: System.Net.WebException Could not establish secure channel for SSL/TLS Stack trace: at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.finishGetRequestStream() at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetRequestStream() at OurApp.GetResponseStream(String domain, Hashtable parameters) inner exception: System.IO.IOException Authentication failed because the remote party has closed the transport stream. Stack trace: at System.Net.SslConnectionState.ClientSideHandshake() at System.Net.SslConnectionState.PerformClientHandShake() at System.Net.Connection.connect(Object ignored) at System.Threading.ThreadPool.WorkItem.doWork(Object o) at System.Threading.Timer.ring() Examining the server Apache logs shows no hits from the user's IP - I don't think the device is even attempting to send a packet before failing. If relevant, the server is running Apache on Linux and is written using the TurboGears Python framework. The server certificate is issued by a CA and is still valid. The test driver where this error was copied from was not code signed, however the same error (without the error messages) is signed with a GeoTrust certificate so we don't believe this is a code signing issue. The application installs and launches without issue on all phones - it's just establishing this SSL connection that is breaking for these users. One significant issue in troubleshooting is that there is a substantial inconvenience each time we try out a solution (need to find a "volunteer" customer), so we're really looking for a silver bullet or a better understanding of the handshaking process so we can be reasonably confident we only need to ask the user to test it one or two more times. One final mention: we have tried the sync both over ActiveSync and also over GPRS with identical results. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

• Write to file depending on minSdkVersion - android

  Hi, I have written a filewriter for my android application. It is to function on a Galaxy Tab, so my minSdkVersion has to be at least 4, so it will fill the screen. I originally started out with SdkVersion = 2 and at that point my filewriter worked perfectly. Changing the SdkVersion to 4 introduced the problem. My filewriter doesn't work anymore! The application runs fine, but a file doesn't get created. • Android Sqlite - obtaining the correct database row id

  I'm working on an app that allows the user to create notes while rehearsing a play. The user can view the notes they have created in a listview, and edit and delete them if they wish. Take for example the user creates 3 notes. In the database, the row_id's will be 1, 2 and 3. So when the user views the notes in the listview, they will also be in the order 1, 2, 3 (intially 0, 1, 2 before I increment the values). So the user can view and delete the correct row from the database. The problem arises when the user decides to delete a note. Say the user deletes the note in position 2. Thus our database will have row_id's 1 and 3. But in the listview, they will be in the position 1 and 2. So if the user clicks on the note in position 2 in the listview it should return the row in the database with row_id 3. However it tries to look for the row_id 2 which doesn't exist, and hence crashes. I need to know how to obtain the corresponding row_id, given the user's selection in the listview. • Override `drop` for a custom sequence

  In short: in Clojure, is there a way to redefine a function from the standard sequence API (which is not defined on any interface like ISeq, IndexedSeq, etc) on a custom sequence type I wrote? 1. Huge data files I have big files in the following format: A long (8 bytes) containing the number n of entries n entries, each one being composed of 3 longs (ie, 24 bytes) 2. Custom sequence I want to have a sequence on these entries. Since I cannot usually hold all the data in memory at once, and I want fast sequential access on it, I wrote a class similar to the following: (deftype DataSeq [id ^long cnt ^long i cached-seq] clojure.lang.IndexedSeq (index [_] i) (count [_] (- cnt i)) (seq [this] this) (first [_] (first cached-seq)) (more [this] (if-let [s (next this)] s '())) (next [_] (if (not= (inc i) cnt) (if (next cached-seq) (DataSeq. id cnt (inc i) (next cached-seq)) (DataSeq. id cnt (inc i) (with-open [f (open-data-file id)] ; open a memory mapped byte array on the file ; seek to the exact position to begin reading ; decide on an optimal amount of data to read ; eagerly read and return that amount of data )))))) The main idea is to read ahead a bunch of entries in a list and then consume from that list. Whenever the cache is completely consumed, if there are remaining entries, they are read from the file in a new cache list. Simple as that. To create an instance of such a sequence, I use a very simple function like: (defn ^DataSeq load-data [id] (next (DataSeq. id (count-entries id) -1 []))) ; count-entries is a trivial "open file and read a long" memoized As you can see, the format of the data allowed me to implement count in very simply and efficiently. 3. drop could be O(1) In the same spirit, I'd like to reimplement drop. The format of these data files allows me to reimplement drop in O(1) (instead of the standard O(n)), as follows: if dropping less then the remaining cached items, just drop the same amount from the cache and done; if dropping more than cnt, then just return the empty list. otherwise, just figure out the position in the data file, jump right into that position, and read data from there. My difficulty is that drop is not implemented in the same way as count, first, seq, etc. The latter functions call a similarly named static method in RT which, in turn, calls my implementation above, while the former, drop, does not check if the instance of the sequence it is being called on provides a custom implementation. Obviously, I could provide a function named anything but drop that does exactly what I want, but that would force other people (including my future self) to remember to use it instead of drop every single time, which sucks. So, the question is: is it possible to override the default behaviour of drop? 4. A workaround (I dislike) While writing this question, I've just figured out a possible workaround: make the reading even lazier. The custom sequence would just keep an index and postpone the reading operation, that would happen only when first was called. The problem is that I'd need some mutable state: the first call to first would cause some data to be read into a cache, all the subsequent calls would return data from this cache. There would be a similar logic on next: if there's a cache, just next it; otherwise, don't bother populating it -- it will be done when first is called again. This would avoid unnecessary disk reads. However, this is still less than optimal -- it is still O(n), and it could easily be O(1). Anyways, I don't like this workaround, and my question is still open. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  I'm trying to use this code which is an example taken from here https://gist.github.com/2383248 , but it is coming up with a error on the public void onClick which is Multiple markers at this line - implements android.view.View.OnClickListener.onClick - Syntax error, insert "}" to complete MethodBody, but when I add the brace it just throws another error after many tries and fails of different suggestions and ideas. • Implementation of ZipCrypto / Zip 2.0 encryption in java

  I'm trying o implement the zipcrypto / zip 2.0 encryption algoritm to deal with encrypted zip files as discussed in http://www.pkware.com/documents/casestudies/APPNOTE.TXT I believe I've followed the specs but just can't seem to get it working. I'm fairly sure the issue has to do with my interpretation of the crc algorithm. The documentation states CRC-32: (4 bytes) The CRC-32 algorithm was generously contributed by David Schwaderer and can be found in his excellent book "C Programmers Guide to NetBIOS" published by Howard W. Sams & Co. Inc. The 'magic number' for the CRC is 0xdebb20e3. The proper CRC pre and post conditioning is used, meaning that the CRC register is pre-conditioned with all ones (a starting value of 0xffffffff) and the value is post-conditioned by taking the one's complement of the CRC residual. • Wicket, Spring and Hibernate - Testing with Unitils - Error: Table not found in statement [select re

  Hi there. I've been following a tutorial and a sample application, namely 5 Days of Wicket - Writing the tests: http://www.mysticcoders.com/blog/2009/03/10/5-days-of-wicket-writing-the-tests/ I've set up my own little project with a simple shoutbox that saves messages to a database. I then wanted to set up a couple of tests that would make sure that if a message is stored in the database, the retrieved object would contain the exact same data. Upon running mvn test all my tests fail. The exception has been pasted in the first code box underneath. I've noticed that even though my unitils.properties says to use the 'hdqldb'-dialect, this message is still output in the console window when starting the tests: INFO - Dialect - Using dialect: org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect. • Postgres - could not create any TCP/IP sockets

  I'm running a rails app in development with postgresql 9.3. When I tried to start passenger server today, I got: PG::ConnectionBad - could not connect to server: Connection refused Is the server running on host "localhost" (217.74.65.145) and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? No big deal I thought, that happened before. Restarting postgres always solved the problem. So I ran sudo service postgresql restart and got: * Restarting PostgreSQL 9.3 database server * The PostgreSQL server failed to start. Please check the log output: 2014-06-11 10:32:41 CEST LOG: could not bind IPv4 socket: Cannot assign requested address 2014-06-11 10:32:41 CEST HINT: Is another postmaster already running on port 5432? If not, wait a few seconds and retry. 2014-06-11 10:32:41 CEST WARNING: could not create listen socket for "localhost" 2014-06-11 10:32:41 CEST FATAL: could not create any TCP/IP sockets ...fail! My postgresql.conf points to the defaults: localhost and port 5432. I tried changing the port but the error message is the same (except the port change). Both ps aux | grep postgresql and ps aux | grep postmaster return nothing. EDIT: In postgresql.conf I changed listen_addresses to 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost and it did the trick, server restarted. I also had to edit my applications' db config and point to 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost. However, the question is now, why is localhost considered to be 217.74.65.145 and not 127.0.0.1? That's my /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 local 127.0.1.1 jacek-X501A1 127.0.0.1 something.name.non.example.com 127.0.0.1 company.something.name.non.example.com

• Apache - child process exited with status 255

  I am running Windows 7 64-bit with an older version of (Apache 2.0.59) and PHP 5.2 - just switched from XP and wanted to keep the same versions. Everything will initially be working fine, but then I'll be trying to load a page and Apache crashes. I'll get an error in the browser that says "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." Then Apache stops running. Sometimes it can be restarted, but then crashes again on the next page load. Sometimes it can't even be restarted at all. Looking in the Apache error logs, I see a series of messages that goes something like: [notice] Apache/2.0.59 (Win32) PHP/5.2.13 configured -- resuming normal operations [notice] Server built: Jul 27 2006 15:55:03 [notice] Parent: Created child process 1220 [notice] Child 1220: Child process is running [notice] Child 1220: Acquired the start mutex. [notice] Child 1220: Starting 250 worker threads. [notice] Parent: child process exited with status 255 -- Restarting. I have just come from Win XP where I never had any problems - is this an issue with my Apache version on Win7? Or perhaps it's a configuration issue? • WmiPrvSE memory leak on Windows 2008 *R2*

  I've seen references on Windows 2008 to WmiPrvSE leaks, but nothing about Windows 2008 R2. We're running R2 on top of Hyper-V (2008). We are also running NSClient++ for monitoring from opsview. Over time, WmiPrvSE.exe starts to use a lot of memory, causing memory alert issues (less than 10% free). VM has 2GB, WmiPrvSE consumes up to 500-600MB before I kill it. Killing the process doesn't seem to have any negative effect; it starts up again and I haven't noticed any problems. But after a day or two, it's back in the same situation. Any ideas on what to do? Resource Monitor doesn't show any Disk or Network IO by WmiPrvSE.exe. Just slowly climbing private memory... Edited to add: We aren't running clustering, or Windows System Resource Manager. The only regular WMI user I can guess is NSClient++, but we don't seem to have this problem on other servers.

• IIS 7.5, Multiple Application Pools, and URL Rewriting (403.18 -- Forbidden)

  Is there any way to configure IIS 7.5 to perform URL rewrites to different application pools on the same site without running into a 403.18 error? We're using Helicon ISAPI Rewrite 3 on IIS 6 and it's working like a charm. The root-level "application" is running under it's own application pool, and on IIS 6 we have no problems doing URL rewrites from that application pool to any one of the other four application pools. But when I copy the same server configuration information over to IIS 7.5 the URL rewrites to any of the other application pools fail with a "403.18 -- Forbidden" error. The weird bit is that the IIS 6 is not (at least as far as I can tell, by looking at the site Service configuration dialog) running under IIS 5 emulation mode, so somehow the rewrites aren't throwing 403.18 errors. So something must be different... but whatever it is, I sure haven't been able to figure it out. Btw, we're not married to Helicon ISAPI Rewrite. If there's another way to preserve our current rewrite configuration rules using another module or method I'd be more than happy to use it.

  Is there any way to configure IIS 7.5 to perform URL rewrites to different application pools on the same site without running into a 403.18 error? We're using Helicon ISAPI Rewrite 3 on IIS 6 and it's working like a charm. The root-level "application" is running under it's own application pool, and on IIS 6 we have no problems doing URL rewrites from that application pool to any one of the other four application pools. But when I copy the same server configuration information over to IIS 7.5 the URL rewrites to any of the other application pools fail with a "403.18 -- Forbidden" error. The weird bit is that the IIS 6 is not (at least as far as I can tell, by looking at the site Service configuration dialog) running under IIS 5 emulation mode, so somehow the rewrites aren't throwing 403.18 errors. So something must be different... but whatever it is, I sure haven't been able to figure it out. Btw, we're not married to Helicon ISAPI Rewrite. If there's another way to preserve our current rewrite configuration rules using another module or method I'd be more than happy to use it.

• Firebird 2.1: gfix -online returns "database shutdown"

  Hey all. Googling this one hasn't made a bit of difference, unfortunately, as most results specify the syntax for onlining a database after using gfix -shut -force 30 (or any other number of seconds) as gfix -online dbname, and I have run gfix -online dbname with and without login credentials for the DB in question. The message that I get is: database dbname shutdown Which is fine, except that I want to bring it online now. It's out of the question to close fbserver.exe (running on a Windows box, afaik it's Classic Server 2.1.1 but it may be Super) since we have other databases running off of that which need almost 24/7 uptime. The message from doing another gfix -shut -force or -attach or -tran is invalid shutdown mode for dbname which appears to match with the documentation of what happens if the database is already fully shut down. Ideas and input greatly appreciated, especially since at the moment time is a factor for me. Thanks! EDIT: The whole reason I shut down the DB is to clear out "active" transactions which were linked to a specific IP address, and that computer is my dev terminal (actually a virtual machine where I develop frontends for the database software) but I had no processes connecting to the database at the time. They looked like orphaned transactions to me, and they weren't in limbo afaik. Running a manual sweep didn't clear them out, deleting the rows from MON$STATEMENTS didn't work even though Firebird 2.1 supposedly supports cancelling queries that way. My last resort was to "restart" the database, hence the above issue.

• PHP CLI not respecting memory limit in php.ini

  I am using drush, which is a command-line php app to manage a drupal website. I am running a command to import a lot of data, which is causing me to hit php's memory limit. PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 536870912 bytes exhausted ... Which is 512MB if I'm doing the math correctly (536870912 / 1024 / 1024 = 512). I've changed the directive in the php.ini that drush uses: $> drush status ... PHP configuration : /etc/php5/cli/php.ini $> grep memory /etc/php5/cli/php.ini ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (128MB) ; http://php.net/memory-limit memory_limit = 1024M But I'm still hitting the 512 MB limit! I am running in a virtual machine, whose memory settings I changed from 512 to 1025 MB of RAM to allow drush to run. $> free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1010 578 431 0 14 392 -/+ buffers/cache: 172 837 Swap: 382 0 382 So it says it has some 431 MB free, now that I've bumped the vm up to 1024. I guess half the memory is being used to run the GUI, but I don't understand how the GUI was running okay when the vm had 512 MB of ram. Why is the PHP cli still hitting a 512 MB memory limit? If it was hitting a system memory limit, shouldn't it die around 431MB, which is what the free command says is available?

• Windows Clients: Windows or Linux Domain Controller?

  I'm planning to set up a domain controller for our small computer laboratory. I'm a little confused as to what operating system to use for our domain controller. What's in the lab: The lab has 25 units running a mix of Windows 7 and Windows XP. The domain controller will only have 2GB of RAM running a C2D E7200. (Is this enough?) What we want: The Domain Controller will also be running a git server. The Domain Controller will also be used as a general development machine (mostly Java, PHP). A way to centralize the updates for the windows clients, so that they won't have to download the same patches from the remote site. The machines would just query them from the local domain controller and get the updates from there. Our head recommended that I virtualize a Windows Server 2008 system under a Linux host and use the former as a domain controller and the latter for development or the other way around. A comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of using a Linux distribution or Windows Server 2008 in this situation would also be appreciated. As you may have noticed by now, I'm kinda new to setting up a domain so I hope you guys will be able to help me. Thank you.

• How to troubleshoot web server lock-up (Debian Squeeze)

  Every once in a while, my web server slows so significantly, it seems locked up. Can't SSH in, no sites being served. It's a VPS that started out as Debian 5 which I upgraded to testing (squeeze). It's a typical LAMP set-up with the sole purpose of running a couple of wordpress sites. One time when it locked up, I got to one of the sites, but it was wordpress complaining it couldn't establish a database connection. So it seemed as if something was really chewing up the CPU and mysqld either timed out, or possibly failed and couldn't restart. But since I couldn't SSH in I feel more inclined to attribute it to CPU. But the only processes running now, aside from OS and kernel stuff: apache mysqld python (for fail2ban) sshd exim4 It has 512M of RAM and 1.5 GB of swap. Every time I check on it, it has plenty of free memory and is using virtually no swap (usually 2-3M). And since I am running fail2ban I don't think I'm getting ddosed. I did find this in my logwatch email this morning (it locked up late last night, when there would have been very little traffic): 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a0ebc>] ? oom_kill_process+0x7e/0x23d 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a1505>] ? __out_of_memory+0x12a/0x141 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a1586>] ? out_of_memory+0x6a/0x94 I didn't find anything else suspicious. It can't be my provider's host because I can SSH in and restart the VM, and everything seems fine. Anybody know which logs I should start poring through to find the core of my problem? Thanks guys.

• How to run multiple instances of Tor?

  I'm trying to set up a special proxy server (running Windows). It will have several instances of Privoxy and Tor running and my app will choose which Privoxy instance to send HTTP requests to depending on the load. Privoxy will then forward them to Tor. I'm using srvany.exe to create the services. At the moment I'm running 3 Privoxy and 3 Tor services (I copied the binaries to different folders). Each Privoxy service is listening to its own port (8118, 8119, 8120). I can see them listening in a port scanner. This is the application path (for srvany in registry) for the 1st service: C:\Anonymiser\Privoxy 01\privoxy.exe --service I've also configured the Tor services to listen to different ports (9050, 9052, 9054). This is the application path for the 1st service: C:\Anonymiser\Tor 01\tor.exe -f "C:\Anonymiser\Tor 01\torrc" The problem is, when I start the Tor services, only the first service I start is listening to its port. The others aren't listening. They listen if I run them separately. Any ideas what could be wrong? How can I make all 3 services listen on their assigned ports? This is one of my Tor configs: ControlPort 9051 Log notice stdout SocksListenAddress localhost SocksPort 9050 EDIT: Found a workaround. The Tor binary wants a lock on a file in the AppData folder. Because all of them want a lock on the same file, only the first one I start will be working. The workaround is to run each Tor instance under a different account. Not the best solution, but it works.
