• Standards & compliances for secure web application development?

  I am working with developers right now that write code the way they want and when i tell them to do it other way they respond that its just matter of preference how to do it and they have their way and i have mine. I am not talking about the formatting of code, but rather of way site is organized in classes and the way the utilize them. and the way they create functions and process forms etc. Their coding does not match my standards, but again they argue that its matter of preference and as long as goal achieved the can be different way's to do it. I agree but their way is proven to have bugs and we spend a lot of time going back and forth with them to fix all problems security or functionality, yet they still write same code no matter how many times i asked them to stop doing certain things. Now i am ready to dismiss them but friend of mine told me that he has same exact problem with freelance developers he work with. So i don't want to trade one bad apple for another. Question is is there some world wide (or at least europe and usa) accepted standard or compliance on how write secure web based applications. What application architecture should be for maintainable application. Is there are some general standard that can be used for any language ruby php or java govern security and functionality and quality of code? Or at least for PHP and MySQL i use for my website. So i can make them follow this strict standard and stop making excuses.

• Getting the PC speaker to beep

  There has been much written on getting the beep sound from Ubuntu releases over the years. Example: fixing the beep My needs are slightly different in that I do not want to ensure sound card beeps are functioning. Instead, I want PC speaker beeps, the kind produced by the original built-in speaker because I believe they will produce less CPU load. I have confirmed that my computer has the PC speaker by unplugging the external speakers and shutting down Ubuntu. At some point in the shutdown and restart process a beep is heard even though the external speakers have no power. I have tried the following: In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, turn these lines into comments: #blacklist snd_pcsp #blacklist pcspkr In .bashrc /usr/bin/xset b on /usr/bin/xset b 100 Enable in the gnome terminal: Edit Profile Prefs General Terminal Bell Ensure no "mute" selections in: System Prefs Sound various tabs (uncheck them all). Select "Enable window and button sounds" in: System Prefs Sound Sound Effects In gconf-editor desktop gnome sound, select the three sound check boxes. In gconf-editor apps metacity general select the audible bell check box. Still I get no PC speaker beeps when I send code 7 to the console via my Java program or use echo -e '\a' on the bash command line. What else should I try? Update Since my goal is to minimize load on the CPU, here is a comparison of elapsed times. Each test is for 100,000 iterations. • USB Ports In Wrong Mode, How To Use usbmodeswitch?

  I haven't had access to my USB ports as media devices for a couple days now. I've been reading and researching everything I can find but I can't find a good guide for usbmodeswtich or usbms that I can decipher. The USB's are fine for power, but won't support my android phone as a media device, which is killing me because I use adb everyday, and won't support my plug and play mouse any longer. Not sure what caused the switch, though I think it may be related to the suspend issue I've read about, but the solutions in those threads I read also didn't work. Below is my system information and details.   Hello guys the thing I'll tell is what happens in the company I work for but I know it's more like a common issue in software companies. I'm development team leader in a internet service company that provides service that's very similar to dropbox. In our company we have mainly two divisions: the tech division and the designers division, both have their own reporting hierarchy. Designers focus on designing UI and prioritizing features, while developers focus on implement designers' ideas (more like being driven as our big boss has said). Then here comes our issue: the DEV team and DES team communicate very bad. DEV complain DES for these reasons: Too frequent changing of requirements Too complicated interaction (our DEV team has actually learned many HCI principles) Documents for design are incomplete, usually you just get 'design principles' and it's up to DEV to complete design details. When you find design defects, you ask DES team to resolve them, then DES team quickly change the principles and you gonna spend another several weeks because the change is so fundamental. While DES complain DEV for these reasons: Code architecture is not good enough to adapt to changing requirements (Obviously DES knows something about software development) Product design is about principles, not details. DEV fails to realize this. Communication should be quick and should be mainly oral. Trying to make most feature discussion in document for reference is too overloaded and doesn't make sense. As you can see, DEV and DES have different ideas on product design, and encourages very different practice. We have this difference because of the way we work. So our solution is that we should plan some seminars to make each part more aware of the way the other part work. Then my question is, what are some good topics for such seminars? Guessing some people may not think seminars can solve this problem, please also suggest your solution.

• How do you convince the client their application's backend needs a rewrite?

  I have been supporting a LOB winforms application for a client the last 3 years. The application is built with a simple monolithic architecture and uses .NET 2.0. The application is a core part of their operations and its longevity is paramount. It needs to evolve with their evolving business processes, as well as implement improved functionality etc....this brings me to believe that this application needs an overhaul of sorts on the back-end. The problem is changing a back-end is "invisible"...i.e. the user never actually sees it. It's a quality of the system that is changing (stability, maintainability, reliability, longevity), not some functional requirement that will be easily seen...i.e. the ROI is not obvious. There is a lot of new functionality to be added to the front-end as well (user experience). I am considering a strategy of changing the back-end over time...i.e. when making a change or adding a feature to the front-end, change those components in the back-end that are affected, eventually you get to everything. How do I convince the client that we need to rebuild the back-end?

• Operating System not Found after installing Ubuntu in a Sony Vaio

  I just bought a Sony Vaio SVS15115FLB that came with Windows 7, after enjoying the PC graphic power for a little, I decided it was time to install Ubuntu 12.04. First, I inserted a USB stick, reboot, press F11 but a message saying that no OS was found on the USB, so then I used a live CD. It booted fine and I installed Ubuntu, then when it was time to restart the PC, it didn't boot to GRUB but it went straight to Windows and it began an startup error and was looking for a solution, after it was done, it restarted and then it booted again to Windows and to the same start up error solution thing. I freaked out, so I booted again the Ubuntu live CD, and installed Ubuntu over everything, after it installed I rebooted and then a message appeared saying Operating system Not Found, and I have no idea why. So I Googled again and found this post on Boot Partition, I did everything exactly on that post, but it didn't work (by the way, this was the message): The boot files of [Ubuntu 12.04 LTS] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. It appeared the first time, then I did it all again and then it was gone. I rebooted and nothing, the same Operating System not found message appeared. So I decided to create a partition for Windows, hoping for something, but the message still appears. I really have no idea what to do, but there is something odd, if I insert the USB stick containing Ubuntu 11.10, the message that says that there is no OS in the PendDrive flashes for a fraction of a second and the boot straight to Ubuntu 12.04 without problems (and booted to Windows when I installed it, ignoring Ubuntu), right now I'm using it like that, but its pretty annoying. Can anyone advise me how to fix this? I'm no expert on this kind of things (boot, GRUB, recovery and stuff like that).

• Netbook Remix 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade using alternate iso

  I'm using Netbook Remix 10.04 now. I'm having the 10.10 alternate iso with me. If I use that iso to upgrade, will I lose my netbook version? I've seen in some forums that the upgrade resulted in a change from netbook version to desktop version. Updated on 15/12/2010 I upgraded the OS from 10.04 to 10.10. But I'm getting an error like this after restart: modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory I searched in the forums and got a solution like this: Open Terminal gksudo gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf change the line MODULES=most to MODULES=dep Then use Synaptic (SystemAdministrationSynaptic Package Manager) to reinstall initramfs-tools. I'll be definitely trying this later. After that when the system tries to login, my screen starts flashing with just the ubuntu netbook desktop wallpaper on the screen. No other options will be available. It will be flashing continuosly. If I press the power button then one window comes up with options like Shut down, Restart, Hibernate etc. And the screen won't stop flashing either. I've uploaded a 1 min video. • How do I debug an overheating problem?

  Hello guys. I have a problem with my Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1564 Core i5 4GB Ram VGA ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 running Ubuntu 10.10 32bit). It shuts down abruptly without even a lag in the application I am working with before shutdown. I think it's overheating problem. Actually the laptop is hot all the time when I am running Ubuntu. When I switch back to windows, even with intense load it won't shutdown or show any problem as long as I keep proper ventilation (when the air openings are blocked it does the same). Actually on Ubuntu i don't usually do things that need much CPU power, usually surfing internet, coding web pages and sometimes playing with python and ruby. I am not enabling desktop effects so no GPU load except the normal GNOME gui. Now as I am writing the Processor load in the panel monitor applet is 0%, Memory 11% by programs, 22% by cache. And i have CPU Frequency monitor for each of the 4 cores set to 1.20 Ghz (the lowest possible value, i am not sure if this applet does really limit CPU usage). Running sensors in terminal gave me temp1: +26.8°C (crit = +100.0°C) temp2: +0.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) hddtemp /dev/sda at the terminal gave me /dev/sda: WDC WD3200BEVT-75ZCT2: 46°C All that fine but the laptop is Really hot i can feel it in the keyboard, mouse pad is painful to touch, and the fan is always spinning. I am also placing 2 small fans running on USB under the laptop right now and the laptop is lifted over the fans so it's well ventilated. When I am running windows it doesn't get that hot except when there is a really big load on the CPU and this is keeping me away from using Linux for everyday tasks. Actually I don't care much for speed as I can deal with low speed it's not going to shutdown abruptly. So please if you can help me and tell me what are the possible causes, where should I start ?

• Logitech C510 HD Webcam related question

  I am going to buy Logitech C510 HD webcam and I just checked on other questions here on AskUbuntu that it works out of the box with cheese. My question is can it be limited in any functionality that I would like to do with it? I would like it to be used with everything - Skype, Gtalk video chat, Facebook, Youtube etc I would like the ability to record or do a video call in lesser resolution video (its a 720p one). Also since I read that I should have a Core2Duo 2.2Ghz for 720p but I have a 2.0Ghz one, would it be possible for me to first record it and then encode it after recording if my processor really start giving issue when doing on-the-fly encoding? I also have a ATI HD 4850 512MB card, if it can help in encoding on-the-fly or is there a chance that my graphics card alone can handle it and those specs were just for a system without a graphics card? I believe so. Also, I got no worries in dealing with console, if I have to do some of the things above in terminal. Other possible significant details: I have a dual screen setup 29" (1360X768) & 22" (1680X1050) which might be using some good power from GPU and I have 2GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM.

• Ubuntu 64bit Black Screen on Minecraft

  I have tried posting on the forums, but I really need help (I'm a server admin and really don't want to have to switch to Windows just to run Minecraft). Anyhow, I originally was running openjdk6 as I was told that 7 was unstable and was getting periodical lag spikes while walking (at least once every 3 seconds the screen would freeze for a tenth of a second). After that, I attempted to install Sun's Java JDK7 (I couldn't get ahold of 6 without signing up for Oracle's newsletters). • Planning milestones and time

  I was hired by a marketing company a year ago initially for link building / SEO stuff, but I'm actually a Web developer and took the job just in desperation to have one (I'm still quite young and just finished 2nd year of University). From the 3rd day my boss realised that I'm not into that stuff at all and since he had an idea of a web based app we started to plan it. I estimated that it shouldn't take me longer than two months to do it, but as I was making it we soon realised that we want to add more and more stuff to make it even better. So the development on my own lasted for about 4 months, but then it became an enterprise size app and we hired another programmer to work along me. The guy was awesome at what he did, but because I was assigned to be programmer/project manager I had to set up milestones with deadlines and we missed most of them, because most of the time it was too much work, and my lack of experience kept me setting really optimistic deadlines. We still kept adding features and had changed the architecture of the application twice. My boss is a great guy and he gets that when we add features it expands the time frame in which things should be done so he wasn't angry at me nor the other guy. But I was feeling bad (I still am) that I suck at planning. I gained loads of experience from the programming side, but I still lack the management/planning skills which make me go nuts. So over the last year I have dedicated probably about 8 months of work to this app (obviously my studies affected it) and we're launching as a closed beta this month. So my question is how do I get better at planning/managing a project, how do you estimate the times? What do you take into consideration when setting goals. I'm working alone again because the other guy moved from the city. But I'm sure we'll be hiring to help me maintain it so I need to get better at it. Any hints, points or anything on the topic are appreciated.

• Cannot use second display with 12.04 and Intel 2000/3000

  I am unable to get anything to display on my second monitor, or even get the system to recognize that there is a second screen. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV, revision 2.0 box. The integrated chipset is an Intel 2000/3000, and there are both a D-Dub and a DVI-D display ports on the MB. This is the first operating system I have installed on this system. I have a second monitor plugged into the DVI-D port via a DVI-D to D-Sub adapter. I cannot verify that the motherboard or adapter were/are working, short of installing windows to test the theory. When I go into the "System Settings - Displays" control window, it shows one display. I have rebooted with the second monitor attached, and I have perused the BIOS settings in case it might have been disabled. So far, I have had no indication that the second monitor is recognized, not even a flicker at power on. If I swap monitors and cables between the DVI-D and D-Dub ports, the other monitor lights up, so I know the monitor and video cable are not the issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated. • Usual Suspects: Typical 3rd Party Entities in E-Commerce [closed]

  I am doing some requirements/analysis for a web app that I'd like to build (Ruby/Java developer here). This web app would have a store front, shopping cart and would need to be totally compliant with all e-com best practices. It's amazing how much non-technical info comes up when you search for phrases like "how does e-commerce work", but very little comes up in the way of technical details. As such, I'm having extreme frustration finding answers to what I consider pretty straight-forward questions. I came here because I believe this question is not off-topic; if it is, please leave a comment as to why this question does not belong here and I will happily remove it myself (upvotes if your comment can point me to the correct place for this question!). So then: What 3rd parties will I need to work with to have a modern, web-compliant e-com site? So far I can account for a payment gateway provider like Authorize.net and an SSL certificate provider like Trustwave. Any others? What other standards besides PCI compliance will I be held to (besides governing laws, of course!)? Vulnerability scans: PCI compliance requires quarterly scans: if I'm a "Level 4" (low volume) Merchant does that still apply to me? Irregardless, my backend architecture is quite huge, with web servers, app servers, database, message brokers and more. Do each of these servers need to be scanned?!? If not what servers do need to get these quarterly scans? I usually hate to ask micro-questions inside of one large one, but these are so closely-related I just felt like asking them all separately would be spamming the site with too many petty questions. • Trying to install Proprietory Nvidia Graphics Drivers

  After reading and trying many different suggestions for some hours, I returned to this how-to: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia The first problem I encounter is how to identify which of the listed drivers support my Nvidia GEForce 630M graphics card. Following the links doesn't really help, since it is not stated there either (except where support for a new driver was added later which is explicitly stated, but the original devices covered are not). However, even if I knew, if it doesn't appear in the 'Additional Drivers' dialogue (see below), how will I install it? Second Issue: The article goes on to say that available drivers for my hardware are usually listed in 'Additional Drivers'. In my case, they aren't. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell me how to correct that or work around it? I've checked the bios and there is no way offered there to disable the integrated graphics, only the Nvidia graphics. I've also tried each available option in this: $ sudo update-alternatives --config i386-linux-gnu_gl_conf My system is an Acer Aspire 4752G bought May 2012. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04LTS. uname -a : 3.2.0-38-generic-pae #61-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 19 12:39:51 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux It's 64bit hardware but I installed 32bit OS for greater software compatibility. [ 28.886] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found) The reason for wanting the proprietor y drivers is because my laptop comes with 3D accelerated graphics adaptor and so rather than confining myself to struggling with the on-board graphics, I would rather use it. I also want to experiment with using it for bitmining (which uses the GPU's for computing power).

  Yesterday I spent the longest day at this TechEd: we talked with many people at Community Night until 9pm and I have to say that just a few months after Analysis Services 2012 has been released, there are many people already using it. And the adoption of PowerPivot is starting to be quite large. Many new ideas and challenging coming from several different real world scenarios. I was tired but really happy. Alberto presented his Many-to-Many Relationships in BISM Tabular session that was in the same time slot of the BI Power Hour. For this reason, very few people attended Alberto’s session so I think many will watch the recorded session (it should be available within a few days). So what about today? I’ll spend some time at Technical Learning Center area (full schedule here) but the most important event today will be the Querying multi-billion rows with many to many relationships in SSAS Tabular (xVelocity) at the Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Data Platform Theater in the Technical Learning Center area (next to the SQL Server 2012 zone).  Why you should attend? Mainly because you will see live demo over 4 billion rows table with many-to-many relationships involved in complex queries. But for those of you that think this is not enough to attend a 15 minute funny session, well, we’ll give away some 8GB USB Memory Keys to those of you that will guess exact response time of queries before execution. • Versioning APIs

  Suppose that you have a large project supported by an API base. The project also ships a public API that end(ish) users can use. Sometimes you need to make changes to the API base that supports your project. For example, you need to add a feature that needs an API change, a new method, or requires altering of one of the objects, or the format of one of those objects, passed to or from the API. Assuming that you are also using these objects in your public API, the public objects will also change any time you do this, which is undesirable as your clients may rely on the API objects remaining identical for their parsing code to work. (cough C++ WSDL clients...) So one potential solution is to version the API. But when we say "version" the API, it sounds like this also must mean to version the API objects as well as well as providing duplicate method calls for each changed method signature. So I would then have a plain old clr object for each version of my api, which again seems undesirable. And even if I do this, I surely won't be building each object from scratch as that would end up with vast amounts of duplicated code. Rather, the API is likely to extend the private objects we are using for our base API, but then we run into the same problem because added properties would also be available in the public API when they are not supposed to be. So what is some sanity that is usually applied to this situation? I know many public services such as Git for Windows maintains a versioned API, but I'm having trouble imagining an architecture that supports this without vast amounts of duplicate code covering the various versioned methods and input/output objects. I'm aware that processes such as semantic versioning attempt to put some sanity on when public API breaks should occur. The problem is more that it seems like many or most changes require breaking the public API if the objects aren't more separated, but I don't see a good way to do that without duplicating code.

• Hybrid Graphics on Ubuntu 12.04 switching to discrete

  I have a Sony Vaio VPCCB-27FX with hybrid graphics. Using vgaswitcheroo enables me to switch my discrete card off to save power. Now when i want to switch to the discrete card for performance, my system freezes.
