    Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties: Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first screen when 2nd screen is unplugged Keyboard shortcut friendly Not too hard to install Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics Please suggest and share your experiences

    I'm running Windows Server 2008 Standard running in VMware. It has 2 disks: system disk: 16 GB data disk: 500 MB I installed Visual Studio 2008 SP1 + MSDN and some small tools and libraries that don't take much space. Over time the system disk's free space has been going down (I suspect because of regular system updates - NetFx (.NET), service packs, and regular updates). Questions 1 How do you remove Windows Update uninstall files from Windows Server 2008? Question 2 I also found lots of files in C:/Windows/Installer folder. Is it possible to determine which .msp file goes with which patch? I would like to delete some of them, because they do take a lot of space.

  • is there a way to prevent network manager from storing the password for a wireless network

    Our corporate wireless network uses continuously changing passwords with RSA tokens. So every time we need to connect to the wireless we need to enter a new password off the RSA token. For extra fun using the wrong password a couple of times in a row causes the users account to be locked. Network manager automatically stores and reuses the password, with the net result that it is constant getting my account locked. Is there some way to prevent it from storing my password for that network? Or perhaps someway to get the gnome keyring to not store it?

  • What is the best time to schedule regular updates on inhouse production server?

    Given an inhouse server running in production mode I would like to keep the impact on the users as low as possible when deploying regular updates (to the server itself, not the user machines .. but that would be a pretty similar problem). The obvious answer to my question is "at night, when the users are at home". But "night" is a long period of time. Should one start early in the evening to perhaps catch problems with the update early on and be ready to rollback? Or is it better to start early in the morning and use the first users as "guinea pigs" to faster trigger the problems? Or in the middle of the night when the concentration of the one overseeing the update is pretty low but it is guaranteed to have no open file handles of some late working users? Are there any research papers on the topic?

  • Use Ultracopier / Teracopy with Ditto Clipboard Manager

    I really like the tool Ultracopier because of the copy acceleration and additional details on Windows. Also the ability to pause the copy is really helpful. Additionally I want to use a clipboard manager such as Ditto. The problem here is, when I run Ditto, my system won't use the Ultracopy tools for copiying anything It uses the windows default. How can I use the advantages of both tools? Is there any similar tool (perhaps a single tool) which gives me these options?

    I recently setup a new server for use with SQL. When I tried to connect via SSMS remotely, it failed. When I pinged it, it is pinging localhost, what is going on here? Please let me know if more details will help. It is Windows Server 2008.     firstly, apologies if this question has been asked and answered before, but I have had a look through related queries and found nothing identical to this. I have had a website for a few years, and have never had any problem uploading any files. But today, when i went to transfer a new html file onto the server...i did so, the file arrived. so i browsed to the file in my browser to check the page as i always do, and the browser wouldn't acknowledge it. after repeated attempts to transfer it, it finally seemed to go over, but only 1/4 of the file size..4KB out of 16KB...so only the top of the page would be viewable in my browser...ive tried transferring on a number of ftp clients and no love... my expertise on this is limited and i cant really think of the next step, the server isnt full, so...im just stumped. any ideas? any and all feedback is great appreciated.

    I just cant seem to figure out the logic in how to configure my Mac Server. So I have set up an DNS, which will take the domain and all subdomains and point towards an IP. File: db.mydomain.com (in /var/named/) mydomain.com. 10800 IN SOA mydomain.com. admin.mydomain.com. ( 2012110903 ; serial 3600 ; refresh (1 hour) 900 ; retry (15 minutes) 1209600 ; expire (2 weeks) 86400 ; minimum (1 day) ) 10800 IN NS mydomain.com. 10800 IN A 10.0.1.2 www.mydomain.com. 10800 IN A 10.0.1.2 So I want all of these requests to be requested to the 10.0.1.2 server, as I run 2 servers in my cluster. This one has always handled the requests, and now I want to add a server in between. So the server in between will get all the signals from my router which NAT the trafic coming from outside. So after setting this up and trying to point my port 80 towards my new server which will be the middle point, it doesn't work. Is it even possible to do it this way? First server: Mac Second server: Linux So what I try to achieve once more: 1. User goes to mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com 2. User request gets handled by my first server 3. First server refers to a local server, which is only available locally (it is configured to allow requests on port 80 and handle them) 4. Second server receives signal 5. Second server returns a request (either directly send to user or send through first server, whichever is most secure and configurable) I also want to be able to set up domains that lead to other servers in the future, and some that are only available within the VPN. (If that changes anything) I hope some kind soul could help me with this, it is really cumbersome for my mind to get the logic here. Do I have to configure my other server in any way? /Marcus

  • how to include error messages into backup reports for SQL Server 2008 R2?

    Right now I have daily (differential) and weekly (full) backups set on my SQL Server 2008 R2 as jobs for SQL Server Agent with email notifications if job fails. I do get emails like this: JOB RUN: 'Daily backup.Diff backup' was run on 4/11/2012 at 3:00:00 AM DURATION: 0 hours, 0 minutes, 28 seconds STATUS: Failed MESSAGES: The job failed. The Job was invoked by Schedule 9 (Daily backup.Diff backup). The last step to run was step 1 (Diff backup). but often that happens because we delete/create new databases - and diff backup fails. And the only way for me to see the actual reason is to go to Log Viewer - Maintenance Plans logs. Is it possible to include "Error Message" field from the logs into notification emails? And more generic - is it possible to change notification email templates somehow?.. Thanks you.

  • Can I install ConsoleZ without a package manager?

    I am not sure why/how, but I can't seem to simply install ConsoleZ on my Windows 7 computer. I went here, got the latest x64 release, and unzipped it. Afer unzipping it, I get just one directory, that looks like this Now I simply double click on Console.exe. This, however, gives me a very 'boring' looking console, and actually says 'Console2' at the top, not ConsoleZ. This is the first point that confuses me... what is going on here? The other .exe (ConsoleWow) doesn't run anything if I click it. So I Googled around some more, and found that I can get ConsoleZ, but from a package manager called 'Chocolatey'. This is from here. I have not tried that yet, (should I have to?), but this is another possible way. But I do not understand how/why my first attempt from above doesnt work. Where is the 'ConsoleZ'??

  • Traffic going to wrong server

    I'm in the process of migrating to a new server, but some traffic that should be going to old server is now coming to the new server before I am ready to migrate. My provider used an IP used as the secondary nameserver on the old server as the primary IP on the new server, so now my secondary nameserver is directing traffic to the new server. Is there a way to forward the traffic hitting the new IP back to the old IP while I wait for DNS to propagate? Server is Linux CENTOS 6.5 x86_64 w/ cPanel Thanks

    I am getting the following error: 2011-03-07 21:59:35.73 spid64 Autogrow of file 'MYDB_DATA' in database 'MYDB' was cancelled by user or timed out after 16078 milliseconds. Use ALTER DATABASE to set a smaller FILEGROWTH value for this file or to explicitly set a new file size. I did some research, and I found that for large databases you should set autogrow to a fixed size (MB), and not to a percentage. I feel like this database is not large and I may not be addressing the correct issue by changing this value. Does anyone have any opinions? Thank you!     We are experiencing a performance problem using Windows 2008 CIFS client. We have a FreeNAS server that delivers 1.3GB/s on ZFS write. We have 10Gb network connecting NAS server and CIFS clients. Using two Linux CIFS clients, we can get around 1.2GB/s. But windows 2008 clients can only give us 400MB/s. Is that the best a Windows 2008 client can deliver or we do have a poorly configured Windows client? Much appreciated.

    Hello. Is there some compatibility problem between SQL Server 2005 Express and AMD processors? I read something along those lines on various sites, but found nothing 100% definitive. I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 Express on a computer that runs Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit edition, and the CPU is "AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-70". I tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit installers, just in case, and the process runs fine until the moment the service attempts to start, where it fails with the same error every time. I'm sorry I can't provide more details or the exact message, it was on a client computer to which I have no access at the moment. I hope someone could shed some light on this. Thank you.

  • parallel vms in VMWare Server - how to configure network so they can ping each other?

    I'm using VMWare Server (currently on Version 1.0.7) and have two VMs that I would like to run at the same time. However, I'm having problems in setting them up so they can ping each other. I've configured them to use 'Bridged' networking. They both obtain an IP address from the DHCP server on my network, but after that they can't ping each other. It seems that only the first one has a functioning network connection (I can ping it from the host machine and Internet connection works), but the other one does not. If it helps, both VMs are running XP SP 3. Any ideas? Thanks!

Some servers will remain with VMware Server, but we want to migrate some others to VMware ESXi. In both cases we are making a fresh install, and I wonder if there any suggestion/guidelines regarding the host filesystem and its partitions.     I tried to partition my primary hard disk (NTFS partitions) with qtparted and got stuck in the process. Consequently I had to kill the process and exit my knoppix live CD boot up. Even though I was expecting XP to get corrupted, it booted fine and showed up all the drives accessible. But when I opened this with partition manager 8, it shows up as “BAD”. I ran chkdsk /f without any success. My objective with qparted and partition magic was to resize my existing partitions and add some space to c: How do I fix this problem and resize my partitions?   • Windows boot manager and two hard disks

    here's my situation: I had an HDD with Windows 8 installed (UEFI mode). I bought a SSD and wanted to do a clean install of Windows, so I thought that disabling the HDD and leaving the SSD as the only drive when installing was the right procedure to install the boot manager on the SSD. Unfortunately, after I plugged the HDD back in, the computer won't boot unless I select from the BIOS directly the SSD as the boot device. I guess the problem is that I have two Windows Boot Managers on two separate drives and they conflict. How would I solve this problem (excluding a format of the HDD, because I need to access data on the old Windows partition and, ideally, I would like to be able to boot that partition)?
