• My datacard goes online but doesn't gives internet access (Fedora 14).

  I am using MTS datacard. I have usb_modeswitch installed and have configured the wvdial.conf file. When I do sudo wvdial cdma, the IPs and DNS addresses are also allocated but I still cant access internet. • What's an easy way to install a bunch of OSS apps in my home dir on my company's aging Redhat VNC servers?

  My company's IT group doesn't want to install lots of common stuff on our VNC servers, which run RHEL 4. The list of stuff i want/need includes graphviz, midnight commander, various python libs, sqlite, netbeans, antlr, jdk1.6, etc. They've hobbled rpm somehow, so i can't do rpm --relocate. And i don't want the RHEL4 compatible revs of this stuff anyway. I've probably got the room to build all this stuff in my home dir, but i don't want to take forever tracking down dependencies. Looking for an easy way to get the apps/tools i need, and nothing (or very little) else. Any suggestions?

• RAID driver to choose for slipstreaming XP installation on ASUS P5S800

  I'm trying to install Windows XP on my new SATA drive but I need to first slipstream the drivers with nLite. I've done this before, but not on an ASUS P5S800 - VM motherboard. I'm not used to the number of choices it gives me for drivers in SiS chipsets. When I look through the folder that I downloaded from ASUS for the RAID driver, I see many folders with different versions of the driver. Here are the folders or versions given. 180ob 964_180 965 966_968 What drivers do I need to add in order to get XP on my SATA disk?

• Convert all short (8.3) paths to long paths in the registry?

  Running FSUtil 8Dot3Name Scan /v /s C: gives you a list of potential 8.3 paths in the registry that are referring to your file system, but is there any tool that can actually convert those paths to long paths in the registry? I do understand this could break some programs, but I have backups so I'd be willing to give it a try. (I tried to make a tool like this myself, but it's harder than it looks, because of false positives and all the varieties of ways the path could be embedded.)

• Error message: do not have authority to access this function

  Hi. I just reinstalled Windows on my computer after getting a virus. I worked with it for a while and everything worked as it should. I then used a backup of the computer that I had made a week or so earlier and copied the backup over my user folder. (That is, I took the folder named "Joe" from the backup drive and copied-replaced the whole thing over the folder named "Joe" on the new Windows install.) To do this I had to work from an Ubuntu live CD because some of the files were in use. Now the problem: After I did this copying my computer says that I have no authority. Anytime I try to access anything that is part of the operating system (Explorer, Personalize, Control Panel, etc) I get an error message that says I don't have the authority to do this. I am able to access things that aren't part of the OS: Chrome, Firefox, my accounting software, Rockbox, but nothing that is part of the OS. I only copied over the User file, so I didn't mess with the registry or anything, so I have no idea why this should be. Does anyone out in cyberspace have any idea? Thank you.

• Running IE on OSX with WineBottler: Can't find wine?

  So I want to run IE7 on OSX 10.6 with WineBottler. I saw it was possible to run IE on Mac with WineBottler, following these instructions. I installed WineBottler and IE7. All was looking good. However, when I tried to open IE7 from the Applications menu, I got an error message: "Can't find Wine. Wine is required to run this program." I then installed wine-devel from macports (which was a bit fiddly as I hit this problem and had to update a lot of dependencies, but it did eventually build). However, even after doing that, I'm still seeing the 'Can't find wine' error message whenever I try to open IE7 or WineBottler. Could anyone advise? Do I need to start wine running somehow?

• Making sense of S.M.A.R.T

  First of all, I think everyone knows that hard drives fail a lot more than the manufacturers would like to admit. Google did a study that indicates that certain raw data attributes that the S.M.A.R.T status of hard drives reports can have a strong correlation with the future failure of the drive. We find, for example, that after their first scan error, drives are 39 times more likely to fail within 60 days than drives with no such errors. First errors in re- allocations, offline reallocations, and probational counts are also strongly correlated to higher failure probabil- ities. Despite those strong correlations, we find that failure prediction models based on SMART parameters alone are likely to be severely limited in their prediction accuracy, given that a large fraction of our failed drives have shown no SMART error signals whatsoever. Seagate seems like it is trying to obscure this information about their drives by claiming that only their software can accurately determine the accurate status of their drive and by the way their software will not tell you the raw data values for the S.M.A.R.T attributes. Western digital has made no such claim to my knowledge but their status reporting tool does not appear to report raw data values either. I've been using HDtune and smartctl from smartmontools in order to gather the raw data values for each attribute. I've found that indeed... I am comparing apples to oranges when it comes to certain attributes. I've found for example that most Seagate drives will report that they have many millions of read errors while western digital 99% of the time shows 0 for read errors. I've also found that Seagate will report many millions of seek errors while Western Digital always seems to report 0. Now for my question. How do I normalize this data? Is Seagate producing millions of errors while Western digital is producing none? Wikipedia's article on S.M.A.R.T status says that manufacturers have different ways of reporting this data. Here is my hypothesis: I think I found a way to normalize (is that the right term?) the data. Seagate drives have an additional attribute that Western Digital drives do not have (Hardware ECC Recovered). When you subtract the Read error count from the ECC Recovered count, you'll probably end up with 0. This seems to be equivalent to Western Digitals reported "Read Error" count. This means that Western Digital only reports read errors that it cannot correct while Seagate counts up all read errors and tells you how many of those it was able to fix. I had a Seagate drive where the ECC Recovered count was less than the Read error count and I noticed that many of my files were becoming corrupt. This is how I came up with my hypothesis. The millions of seek errors that Seagate produces are still a mystery to me. Please confirm or correct my hypothesis if you have additional information.   I have been searching for long and i am not able to find one editor which i can always keep open for daily notes keeping with some codes and which highlights the code Just like we have our editor where we ask questions. • In Windows 7 Home Premium, is it possible to grant a user account the "log on as a service" right and if so, how?

  The title says it all. I need to have the ability for a local user account to log on as a service on a computer running Windows 7 Home Premium. In Windows 7 Ultimate, this is accomplished by going to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy and adding the user to the "Log on as a service" policy. In Home Premium, there is no Local Security Policy in the Control Panel. Is there another way to add the use to that policy (i.e. registry setting) or is my only recourse to upgrade the computer to Windows 7 Professional? Thanks in Advance, Ryan

• Mac Mini's internet very slow, every other device fine (PC, iPhone, Xbox 360)

  I recently haven't used my Mac Mini for about 5 days (however it was left on). I seem to be able to connect and get great download / upload speeds through my PC, Xbox 360, iPhone and parents' laptop. However, my Mac Mini is very slow. OS X's Mail.app is downloading mail at 0.4kbps and then dropping to 0. Skype file transfers are doing the same. Browsing the net is a terrible experience. It is taking 30 seconds or more to download basic pages. All of my devices connect wirelessly to a Netgear router / modem. I have tried giving the Mac Mini a manual IP, and renew DHCP lease, as well as flush DNS in Terminal. I have also rebooted the router / modem twice, and the Mac Mini twice. Do you know what could be causing this? Thanks

• configure squid3 to set up a web proxy in ubuntu12.04

  I am in a LAN and have to use a proxy given to access the web in a very limited way. I can't even use google, github.com or SE sites. However I can use ssh to log into a server, which I have root access so basically I can do anything I want with it. So I was thinking that maybe I could use that server as a proxy so I can visit sites through it. I tested it using ssh -vT [email protected] which gave a proper response. And In my computer I can't do this. Also I tried downloading something from the gun.org using wget, which can't be done in my computer too. And it succeeded on that server. I don't know if that's enough to say that this server have full access to the Internet. But I assumed so and I installed squid3 on it. After trying some while, I failed to get it working. After configuring my computer, I got this error: Access control configuration prevents your request from being allowed at this time. If so, how to configure the squid in the server so that I use it as a proxy to surf the Internet? My computer and the server both run Ubuntu11.04. Thanks for any help~

  I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a new Dell T-7500 Workstation, and am seeing some strange messages on the screen: Dell SAS 6 Host Bus Adapter BIOS MPTBIOS 6.22.03.00 ( 2008.08.06 ) Initializing….. Press Ctrl – C to run SAS Configuration Utility Searching for Devices at HBA 0….. Dell MPT Boot ROM Successfully installed Then it loads Windows 7. All of above happens on its own, I don't touch anything. So what is going on & what do I have to do get rid off those initializing commands ? I have never had this happen to any previously owned Dell systems. Also I haven't installed any drivers yet but Sound, Video & Internet does work. Do I need to install any additional drivers?

  Hi, on my compputer here at work, the motherboard on one machine decided to fry over the weekend, all of my saved work is on the harddrive here, it has Vista Business as it's OS and my documents were in My Documents. I have since moved the HDD over to a new computer and am trying to locate these files, as I can't work without them and it's not a case of doing it again, this is over three months work. There were three user accounts, mine, my bosses and a guest accont. Where are these My Documents? How can I get them? Thanks for any help you can provide :)

• Sustaining Dual Channel among many RAM modules

  I'd like to know what are the factors that need to be set in order to sustain the Dual Channel mode. In a mobo with 4 DDR3 slots: Do I have to put pair of chips? Eg: If I put 3 identical chips only, will I have Dual channel or not? If I put 4 Ram chips that aren't from of same ventor/model, will I have the same latency among them (the highest of all)? Also, will I sustain Dual Channel mode? If one Ram has max frequency of 1033 and the other 3 chips are of 1300, will I have 1033Mhz for all chips and Dual Channel mode on? What if I put 2x4Gb and 2x8Gb chips (latency, Dual Channel)? Can I put 4Gb chips in slots 1 and 3 and 8Gb in slots 2 and 4 and still have dual channel mode enabled? (Some of the questions might sound silly but their answers aren't that clear to me) (Also, assume that there aren't any bottlenecks because of other parts on the system)

  On Linux systems, you can successfully chmod u+s $some_directory, but instead of forcing the ownership of new subdirectories and files to be the owner of the containing directory (and setting subdirectories u+s as well) as you might expect, the system just ignores the setuid bit. Subdirectories and files continue to inherit the UIDs of their creating processes, and subdirectories are not setuid by default. Why is setuid ignored on directories, and how can I get the system to recognize it?

• LibreOffice Calc/Writer: How to get the dates for specifc weekdays per month?

  I'm stuck with a problem in LibreOffice Calc or Writer: I try to get a table of dates for every monday, wednesday and friday per month, something that I can load every new month wich sets the dates automatically so I just have to print the page on paper. :) In Writer the fieldcommand for date can't obviosly do the job (it only can be set to a fix date, the todays date or +offset as far as I can see). In Calc I tried it with the autofill but that obviosly works for the first 3 days only. I might add that I'm lost with Excel/calc formulars... Any help?

• Again WPA Connection problem even after changed to latest version ..please help

  I am using hostapd, wireless tools with madwifi for my wireless ap in my board. The WEP, WPA-PSK connections and communications between my board with linux and my desktop PC, Windows XP SP2 (with Olitec USB wireless) are fine. But when I configured the WPA type, the connection seems established but shows the status "TKIP - Key Absent" in the security dialog box. Anyone faced this problem? • Google Earth - zoom like with a scope, rotate the camera

  I know it is possible to change a viewing altitude in Google Earth, but is it possible to zoom in/out as well, like with a telescope? I would like to preview what could be viewed from a particular lookout point, but without zoom in it seems very hard. Another feature which would be handy for the purpose: is it possible to turn the viewing direction around the camera, and not around the target?

  When I go to localhost/~admin/ or 127.0.0.1/~admin/ my browser says: "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /~admin/ on this server." How do I change this?!??!?! It's driving me nuts! when I go to localhost or 127.0.0.1/ my browser says: "It Works!". I'm running mac osx 10.8. I created aliases in my .bash_profile file so that I can start, restart and stop Apache quickly: alias startApache="sudo apachectl start" alias stopApache="sudo apachectl stop" alias restartApache="sudo apachectl restart" In my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file I turned on php5: LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so I also made sure to change the permissions for my admin.conf file with this command in terminal: sudo chmod 644 username.conf This is my /etc/apache2/users/admin.conf: <Directory "/Users/admin/Sites/"> Options Indexes MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory>
