• Upcoming Database Design Pre-Cons

  SQL Server 2012 is available for download! http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/default.aspx The Evaluation version is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=29066 and along with the SQL Server 2012 RTM there’s also the Feature Pack available: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=29065 The Feature Pack is rich of useful and interesting stuff, something needed by some feature, like the Semantic Language Statistics Database some other a very good (I would say needed) download if you use certain technologies, like MDS or Data Mining. Btw, for Data Mining also the updated Excel Addin has been released and it’s available in the Feature Pack. As if this would not be enough, also the SQL Server Data Tools IDE has been released in RTM: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/hh297027 Remember that SQL Server Data Tool is completely free and can be used with SQL Server 2005 and after.   I’m really really pleased to announce that it’s possible to register to the Data Warehouse Workshop that I and Thomas Kejser developed togheter.  Several months ago we decided to join forces in order to create a workshop that would contain not only the theoretical stuff, but also the experience we both have and all the best practices and lesson learned that can make the difference between a success and a failure when building a Data Warehouse. • Tracking first visit date in Google Analytics

  I want track a site's visitor retention using Google Analytics, to see if unregistered users are returning to it, within a time frame of 2+ months from now. This blog post seems to be on the right track, but I want to track unregistered users, so I don't have a "join date" or similar variable at my disposal. This other blog post suggests using all 5 GA custom variables, using the first variable slot on the first week, variable 2 on week 2, etc. This method will allow me to track 5 weeks of visitors. I want to track more than 5 weeks of visitors, so I was thinking on using two custom variables in GA: visitor's first visit date, and visitor's last visit date. How I can save the first visit date? Because if I save another value in the same slot the old value will be overwritten, and I don't know how reliable is to save that variable conditionally (reading the __utmv cookie to check whether the "first visit date" is set, if it isn't set I save the current date)

• More than one way to skin an Audit

  I get asked quite a bit about auditing in SQL Server. By "audit", people mean everything from tracking logins to finding out exactly who ran a particular SELECT statement. In the really early versions of SQL Server, we didn't have a great story for very granular audits, so lots of workarounds were suggested. As time progressed, more and more audit capabilities were added to the product, and in typical database platform fashion, as we added a feature we didn't often take the others away. So now, instead of not having an option to audit actions by users, you might face the opposite problem - too many ways to audit!   Excel add-ins Data Explorer and GeoFlow work well together, mainly because they just work. Simple, fast, and powerful. I started Excel 2013, used Data Explorer to search for, examine, and then download latitude-longitude data and finally used GeoFlow to plot an interactive 3-D visualization. • Should SQL Server tools target wide screen formats instead of portrait formats?

This cumulative updates Service Pack 2 to include the fixes from SP1 CU#10 and a few from CU#11, including the fix for the online index rebuild corruption issue I discussed recently on SQLPerformance.com .
