• VPN doesn't have access to drives unless I use the default gateway

  I am trying to setup a VPN connection on one of our office servers so that many of our employees can access our drives when out of town or for important business meetings. However I have a weird glitch in where if the default gateway option is checked they can see the drives and files, but get no internet access. If I have the default gateway option unchecked then they have there internet and can successfully connect to the VPN, but they are not able to see any of the drives or files. The server is running Windows Server 2003 Standard while the employees run either XP or 7 Professional. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. EDIT The VPN setup is PPTP and the main server is behind a SonicWall if that is of any importance.

• Windows 2000 under Windows 7 Virtual PC not working correctly

  I have just moved my Windows 2000 Virtual PCs from Vista to Windows 7 Professional (64-bit). The machines work to a point but I have found some problems: drive mapping does not seem to work any more. I need this to exchange data. I do not need network access to the virtual PC so would rather leave it unconnected. the virtual PC would automatically shutdown the session and go to the login screen after a few minutes of inactivity. I tried installing the Virtual PC Integration Components but the install failed (one of the messages basically says it's XP+ only). Now I'm stuck in 640x480 mode with mouse capture. I have heard that you can install an older version of the Integration Components but this sounds a bit suspect. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get Windows2000 working with drive sharing on a Virtual PC?

I am seeing this error in the log: IPsec dropped an inbound clear text packet that should have been secured. If the remote computer is configured with a Request Outbound IPsec policy, this might be benign and expected. This can also be caused by the remote computer changing its IPsec policy without informing this computer. This could also be a spoofing attack attempt. • Installing a bundled set of multiple apps automatically and silently

  Hi all, When I install Windows, I like to deploy a set of the same apps (for example, Firefox, Chrome, Trillian, 7-Zip, etc.). I'd prefer to have a way of doing it all in one sitting, and I seem to remember there being a way of bundling all the installers. I was able to find two, though neither of them (Almeza MultiSet, WPIW) look like what I was thinking of. Can anyone recommend other ways of running a whole set of installers at once? Thanks! • Logon Failure: the target account name is incorrect after making a ghost image of a server

  I recently replaced a failing SCSI drive in a Windows 2000 server with an IDE drive. I made an image of the SCSI drive and Ghosted it. The purpose of the machine was to give out DHCP at one location and host a couple of files. When I restarted the machine with the new drive, DHCP appears to be working fine, but I cannot get to any of the shares. Instead, I get the following message when attempting to navigate using Explorer. Logon Failure: the target account name is incorrect It appears that this machine is not communicating with the main domain controller. Changes to user accounts (performed on the domain controller) are not replicated on this machine.

• Need advice to choose correct wi-fi drivers for Dell Vostro 3560

  I'm having problems with my Dell notebook's Wi-Fi, it can't see some of the available access points, despite they are close and I used to be connected to them yesterday. Other notebooks and my phone can see them. I believe it's a driver issue, since after installing system I haven't downloaded any network drivers. • Remote RAID Control in ESXi on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 Using OpenManage

  I was wondering how one can add a drive into an existing RAID array while ESXi is still running. I have read that you are able to use Dell OpenManage to do this. I have installed OMSA 7.0 on the VMWare ESXi host (5.0 and fully updated) and I've installed OpenManage Essentials on a Windows Server 2008 R2 guest. The issue that I'm having is that OpenManage is unable to see my RAID controller. I have seen videos and photos as parts of guides on how to do this online, so I would assume that the functionality exists and I just have it set up wrong.

• How do I check for available "Automatic Updates" via script / cli

  I asked this on superuser, but I think this may have been a more apropriate place. We are trying to automate server reboots, but one of the "gotchas" we are running into are that they want us to install updates by manually clicking "sure, install updates" during monthly Windows reboots. If I had a way to check to see if updates are in fact waiting, we'd be ok with rebooting automatically via a script and just failing if this is the case. My problem is I can't figure out how to check to see if there are in fact updates waiting to be installed, without logging in. Is there a file or particular service status I can check for? Maybe with Powershell or something similar? The current setting used is "Download updates but do not install automatically"

One is the traditional method of carving out a LUN on your SAN and presenting it to both hosts through the Microsoft ISCSI software initiator. The other method is to make a vmdk on an existing LUN and attach it to both hosts and made it an independent disk so that it isn't affected by snapshots.   How can I find out which keyboard shortcuts are defined inside the Start menu? And what shortcuts they are assigned to? Platform: Windows XP SP2 64 bit. Example: I open my main Visual Studio solution with a shortcut key, Ctrl+Alt+M. This is setup by having a shortcut inside the Start menu with: Target: "D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" D:\dproj\MSQall\MSQuant\MSQuant.sln Shortcut key: Ctrl+ALT+M If a new shortcut is added and its shortcut key is also set to Ctrl+Alt+M then there are now two shortcuts with the same shortcut key (conflict). To prevent this it would be nice to know which shortcut keys are already assigned and to which shortcuts.

  Hi All, My Windows XP system is very slow. I tried all possible ways of improving the performance. But now luck. I've 4GB RAM and AMD Phenon XII B53 processor. I don't see any applications consuming CPU resources. But the Page File usage is 4.18 GB(System Managed size in MyComputerPropertiesPeformance). There is enough RAM available, but still why OS is using Page File? How can I improve the Page File usage? Please help me.

• How to recover C:\Users folder

  Today I was moving C:\Users to another partition using symlink method. I had the great idea of making the symlink from C:\Users = U:\, instead of C:\Users = U:\Users. Sadly, I've deleted the original "Users" folder and now, when I try to login, it says that The User Profile Service failed the logon. Maybe I'm wrong, but this is because the root directory of user profiles isn't the system one, so now when I create C:\Users, I can't log into Windows and I get the above error message. How can create a new C:\Users directory and workaround the problem? Thank you in advance!

• WesternDigital SmartWare - still problematic?

  I've seen a lot of bad press on WD SmartWare (I think it comes on most WD backup devices now, such as their MyBook product line), mostly related to how it's impossible to remove properly or replace. There are allegations (I couldn't tell how true they were) that it has/is a rootkit, as well. Most of the articles are a couple of years old, so I'm wondering if SmartWare is still just as problematic as it was. Does it still have a nasty rootkit reputation and should I just stick with the Windows 7 built-in backup system, or is the current SmartWare generation improved and better behaved?

• Break a hard link of a file in use

  I used hard links to merge duplicated files on my SSD (space is still precious) and now have a weird problem. Common files like msvcr110.dll got hard linked. Now I want to delete a program which has this file in its installation directory. But I cannot because this file (on another location) is used by a currently running application (don't know which) and windows doesn't allow me to delete this file because it's in use. I can rename the file but it still points to the same file, so not possible to delete it. Is there any way to break a the hard link of a file which is currently in use? I currently use a trash folder where I move those files to so I can delete the directory structure of program to be deleted. But I'd like to get rid of this leftover (although it doesn't take much space as it's a hard link).

  My iPod Touch isn't being recognised by iTunes. Details: iPod Touch: 2nd generation / Laptop: Windows Vista / iTunes: latest version I have tried: using different cables; restarted my laptop and iPod. reinstalled iTunes. restarting services that were made by Apple; putting my iPod into restore mode; resetting my iPod; and still no luck getting it to be recognised by iTunes. This iPod works on other computers, and different iPod's work on my laptop. When I stopped all of the Apple services on my laptop, I got a message from iTunes when I connected my iPod saying that I needed to enable the services for it to work. But when I did enable the services again, the iPod still didn't show up on iTunes. I can't think what else I can do to solve the problem. Any ideas? Thank you very much in advance!

  I have a time management application that I use at home quite a lot and have running most of the time. At home, I have a desktop PC and a couple of laptops scattered around the house...all networked together. Unfortunately, the application I use is not multi-user and I risk losing/corrupting data if it has been left running on one computer inadvertently while I start using it on another one in another part of the house. I use Live Mesh to automatically keep the application's database synced across the different computers and I just need some way of making sure that I don't start using the application on another computer before closing it down on the previous one. Anyone know of any Windows software that can detect if an application is running simultaneously on different computers on my network, and warn me if I am about to have two open at the same time?

  I have used the Cisco VPN client for years, and on XP it is pretty much rock solid, on Vista, not so much. You might be able to connect, but unless you set up a constant ping to something, it usually will disconnect, with this error: Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapater Now, most sysadmins will say, update you client - yes, I know, it hasnt mitigated the issue, ever. I have been using it on Vista since it came out, and updated my client every time a new update comes out. I have used it where the VPN server was a Cisco PIX and a Windows Box allowing the Cisco Client to connect. Anyone have any fixes that you can do on your client to fix this issue?

  I have a Windows XP machine (it is a VM running in Xen) that I would like to backup. I have enabled ClearPageFileAtShutdown by following MS KB 314834. If I cleanly shutdown the XP machine and then mount the drive in another machine (which is trivial since the machine is virtual) I still have a large pagefile.sys. I was hoping that enabling ClearPageFileAtShutdown would result in a pagefile.sys with a size near zero. I have two questions. First, is it possible to have pagefile.sys be deleted, or have a drastic size reduction, at shutdown? Second, can I exclude pagefile.sys from my backup?

The power button on the PC is setup to but the computer to sleep (but it's down on the floor and I'm too lazy to reach down) it exactly how I want it (sleeps using hybrid mode in case I loose power) The sleep command on the shutdown menu also works. most info I found says to use; %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState 0,1,0 But this puts the computer in hibernate mode. I do have hibernate disabled but using hybrid sleep. So, What is the command to use to put your computer to sleep (not hibernate)?

• What's an easy way to shut down a computer that I'm connected to via RDP

  I have a secondary machine on my local network that I usually use via RDP. Most of the time, it's on 24/7, but there are times when I may want to shut it down from the RDP client machine. The shutdown and restart options aren't available from the Windows XP start menu when you connect to a machine via RDP, so how can I shut this machine off without actually going to the physical machine? Also note that this computer currently doesn't have a monitor attached to it, which is partly why I want to be able to shut it down over RDP.

I have two locations, and one server (sbs 2008); I need them to act like one physical LAN. I know it's possible, I just know how to set it up, or anything about VPNs, etc. So, just to clarify a bit more: 1 Small Business Server 2008 ~30 Computers with varying systems from Windows XP to 7 2 Physical Locations I use redirected folders, but since that would consume a lot of bandwith over VPN, I have a machine over there that can be the workhorse for storage. Users need to access e-mail and shared databases from this server (or possibly some form of DFS with aforementioned workhorse) from the other building. Is there a nice tutorial (or I nice person that wants to write it) online that can explain how to set up computers from an external network to act like they were in the LAN?

• How to allow an internal server accept remote connections not through RD Gateway

  So, I help administrate a collection of servers running various windows server environments. We have a RD Gateway server, properly configured, to gatekeep for us. It does not have the other servers listed in it's server farm category, though. I just added a refurbished server for a non-profit development environment that is sharing the rack space and port. I would like this server to be accessible via remote connection, but not require RD gateway certification (I cannot add the users for this development server to our gateway since they do not work for the organization hosting the rack.) Is there any way for me to add this dev. server as an exception to which servers should require RD Gateway clearance, or otherwise let users bypass RD gateway credentials for this one machine? Thanks, and let me know if I am misinformed on how RD gateway works or anything. I am still learning.
