• Unable to change the launcher icon size

  After upgrading to 11.10 I can't change the launcher icon size to smaller. I've tried to change it using ccsm, like described in How can I configure Unity, but the changes take no effects (restarted, tried sudo - still big icons). In the previous version of Ubuntu this solution worked. How can I change the icon size? (BTW, how can I know which Unity (2D vd 3D) I'm running and switch between?). • How to make Chrome/Chromium remember passwords in the gnome seahorse keyring?

  Is it possible to make chrome or chromium (as that comes default in the repos) to use the Gnome seahorse as password vault? I have not found a way to do this for Firefox either, but maybe a solution for Firefox will lead to a solution for Chrome. FYI: Epiphany is properly integrated into Gnome by default, and does use the default password vault. It would be great to at least have all passwords in a single, actually secure, place, instead of laying around in my home-dir. Even better would be if somehow they could re-use eachothers passwords, but that depends on the implementation of this integration, i guess.

• Could not apply stored configuration for monitors

  Well this happened when I upgraded to Natty. Not only seems I can't change my resolution to higher than 1024x768 but it appears at the left and using only 70% of the monitor's width. I tried logging in but in ubuntu classic mode, and i was able to change it, but that trick did not work anymore. (May this be a compiz problem?) • Creating the Business Card Request InfoPath Form

  Business Card Request Demo Files Back in January I spoke at SharePoint Saturday Virginia Beach about InfoPath forms and Web Part deployment.  Below is some of the information and details regarding the form I created for the session.  There are many blogs and Microsoft articles on how to create a basic form so I won’t repeat that information here.   This blog will just explain a few of the options I chose when creating the solutions for SPS Virginia Beach.  The above link contains the zipped package files of the two InfoPath forms(no code solution and coded solution), the list template for the Location list I used, and the PowerPoint deck.  If you plan to use these templates, you will need to update the forms to work within your own environments (change data connections, code links, etc.).  Also, you must have the SharePoint Enterprise version, with InfoPath Services configured in order to use the Web Browser enabled forms. So what are the requirements for this template? Business Card Request Form Template Design Plan: Gather user information and requirements for card Pull in as much user information as possible. Use data from the user profile web services as a data source Show and hide fields as necessary for requirements Create multiple views – one for those submitting the form and Another view for the executive assistants placing the orders. Browser based form integrated into SharePoint team site Submitted directly to form library The base form was created using the blank template.  The table and rows were added using Insert tab and selecting Custom Table.  The use of tables is a great way to make sure everything lines up.  You do have to split the tables from time to time.  If you’ve ever split cells and then tried to re-align one to find that you impacted the others, you know why.  Here is what the base form looks like in InfoPath.   Show and hide fields as necessary for requirements You will notice I also used Sections within the form.  These show or hide depending on options selected or whether or not fields are blank.  This is a great way to prevent your users from feeling overwhelmed with a large form (this one wouldn’t apply).  Although not used in this one, you can also use various views with a tab interface.  I’ll show that in another post. Gather user information and requirements for card Pull in as much user information as possible. Use data from the user profile web services as a data source Utilizing rules you can load data when the form initiates (Data tab, Form Load).  Anything you can automate is always appreciated by the user as that is data they don’t have to enter.  For example, loading their user id or other user information on load: Always keep in mind though how much data you load and the method for loading that data (through rules, code, etc.).  They have an impact on form performance.  The form will take longer to load if you bring in a ton of data from external sources.  Laura Rogers has a great blog post on using the User Information List to load user information.   If the user has logged into SharePoint, then this can be used quite effectively and without a huge performance hit.   What I have found is that using the User Profile service via code behind or the Web Service “GetUserProfileByName” (as above) can take more time to load the user data.  Just food for thought. You must add the data connection in order for the above rules to work.  You can connect to the data connection through the Data tab, Data Connections or select Manage Data Connections link which appears under the main data source.  The data connections can be SharePoint lists or libraries, SQL data tables, XML files, etc.  Create multiple views – one for those submitting the form and Another view for the executive assistants placing the orders. You can also create multiple views for the users to enhance their experience.  Once they’ve entered the information and submitted their request for business cards, they don’t really need to see the main data input screen any more.  They just need to view what they entered. From the Page Design tab, select New View and give the view a name.  To review the existing views, click the down arrow under View: The ReviewView shows just what the user needs and nothing more: Once you have everything configured, the form should be tested within a Test SharePoint environment before final deployment to production.  This validates you don’t have any rules or code that could impact the server negatively. Submitted directly to form library   You will need to know the form library that you will be submitting to when publishing the template.  Configure the Submit data connection to connect to this library.  There is already one configured in the sample,  but it will need to be updated to your environment prior to publishing. The Design template is different from the Published template.  While both have the .XSN extension, the published template contains all the “package” information for the form.  The published form is what is loaded into Central Admin, not the design template. Browser based form integrated into SharePoint team site In Central Admin, under General Settings, select Manage Form Templates.  Upload the published form template and Activate it to a site collection. Who pays best? Any regulations? Any problems with getting the app approved by Microsoft Market? If you chose Admob: Which plugin do you suggest? This or that or another one? Any experiences in Europe or Germany? (MS pubCenter is US only so far) Edit: I think we discussed enough about acceptance of mobile advertisement. Let's focus now on the questions I asked. • What label of tests are BizUnit tests?

  BizUnit is defined as a "Framework for Automated Testing of Distributed Systems.  However, I've never seen a catchy label to describe what sort of tests we create using this framework. They are not really “Unit Tests” that's for sure. "Integration Tests" might be a good definition, but I want a label that clearly separates it from the manual "System Integration Testing" phase of a project where real instances of the integrated systems are used. Among some colleagues, we brainstormed some suggestions: Automated Integration Tests Stubbed Integration Tests Sandbox Integration Tests Localised Integration Tests All give a good view of the sorts of tests that are being done. I think "Stubbed Integration Tests" is most catchy and descriptive. So I will use that until someone comes up with a better idea.

• Installed Ubuntu In a low Specs PC and it is too slow, even with LXDE

  I'm new with Linux and started with Ubuntu 11.10, I installed it in my PC (Core2Duo 2Ghz, 512Mb Ram DDR2, integrated video in Motherboard), I know the requirements for Unity are 1Gb Ram so I decided to download a Desktop environment more lightweight, so I Installed LXDE, it loads very fast, compared to the 3.5 min from login screen to open desktop in Unity, but it freezes every time I open a single program, I can't even navigate in Internet, it freezes, sometimes for a pair of minutes and the graph at bottom right is all green as if iyt were using 100% CPU, it happens with every program. As additional data it takes 3+ min to get from boot system selection screen to Login screen and 3.5 Min more to get into Ubuntu with Unity, with LXDE it turns to 30 secs aproximately. Is Ubuntu + LXDE Desktop Environment Package = Lubuntu? or should I download Lubuntu directly instead? I installed some other desktop environments, as Gnome but it doesn't log in, the screen just turns grey. Should I get an older Ubuntu version? I'm thinking about uninstalling Ubuntu but I'll try to deplete the options, thanks for your support.

• Virtualbox will run from 32bit installation CD but not 64bit.

  I am trying to set up Windows in Virtual Box, so I don't need to reboot in the rare occasion that I actually need it. The problem is, Virtual Box doesn't preform any errors when I insert the 32bit installation CD but when I try to use the 64bit installation; What!? I am already using the installation disc! I've checked my BIOS to see if I have SVM (AMD's version of VT) disabled and all I see is "Enabled" I have a K9N6PGM2-V2 motherboard A Triple Core AMD Athlon II A Nvdia NForce 430 integrated graphics card 4GB of RAM An 80GB IDE And a 1TB SATA I don't think the last three specifications matter but just in case XP I am pretty sure the CD isn't broken ( I am going to make sure in just a moment ), what could be the cause to this problem? Edit: The 64bit installation CD is not broken, but I found out when trying to install from the 32bit version that it's trying to upgrade, not preform a fresh install - Odd.

• /etc/X11/xorg.conf doesn't exist?

  I'm trying to get my video card properly setup to handle 3D acceleration. After searching a bit, I've come across a few howtos that tell me I need to edit my xorg.conf file. That file doesn't exist. X.org is installed by default, I'm sure, and I figured this video card would be widely supported. 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) Any ideas on how I can get this to work properly and play Starcraft II? Or any game for that matter? No resolution problems or anything, just no 3D rendering.

• Ubuntu won't use my nvidia driver

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 on a laptop that has both Intel Integrated Graphics and an Nvidia Geforce 540m. I installed the drivers properly, but I can't manage to actually use them. I'm stuck in 640x480 resolution and the drivers aren't detected anywhere. Each time I open the Nvidia settings menu it says: "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (Just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server." ^Doing so does not help. Anybody have any ideas?

  I am running ubuntu 11.10 32bit in my dell xps L502. Working good except few problems. Blue tooth always turned on reboot,I would like to turn it off always. Screen brightness is not saved.Every time I reboot, the screen goes back to full brightness.How to save that? and the most important problem is internet speed through wi-fi is really very slow when operating on battery.the card is intel centrino Advanced-N 1030 with integrated blue tooth. Any help will be appriciated... :)

• Unity spontaneously logs out in Ubuntu 12.04

  This started happening after I upgraded from 11.10. I'm running on a Latitude 13 laptop with an Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (not Nvidia) - no proprietary drivers. It seems to happen under load, though I can't tell if the load is caused by something with this problem or by a program I'm running. I'd like to try nailing this problem. Ideally I don't want to switch to something else (at least not before knowing that that's the only way out and that it's specific to Unity and not, say, X).

• Ubuntu 12.10 AMD/Intel Hybrid Graphics not working

  On Ubuntu 12.04 my Sony Vaio VPCSE with Intel® HD Graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M worked fine with the Catalyst Control Center version 12.6. Also the switching between integrated and discrete graphic card was working. In both cases, I followed this tutorial. But it is not working on Ubuntu 12.10. I tested the tutorial with the Catalyst Control Center from the Ubuntu Software Center, the version 12.8 and version 12.9. Always the same problem: After installation process I am able to boot in the login-screen. But after entering the password for my username, only the background-image appears. Unity seems not to be starting. I am only able to reach the context-menu by right clicking the mouse button. I also tried his fix, but is also does not work for me. Any ideas what to do to fix this problem?

  I'm confused when looking into graphics - specifically with operating systems. I mean, how can a computer render a CLI/console along with a GUI? GUI's are completely different from text. And how can we have GUI windows that display text interfaces, ie how can we have CLI in modern Graphics Operating system - that's what I'm mainly trying to grip on to. How does graphics get rendered to display? Is there some sort of memory address that a GPU access which holds all pixel data, and there system's within OS's that gather the pixel position of windows and widgets, along with the Z Index and rasterize them to that memory address, which then the GPU loads to the screen? How about the CLI's integrated with Graphics? How does the OS tell the GPU that a certain part of the screen wants to display text while the rest wants to display pixel data?

• Educause Top-Ten IT Issues - the most change in a decade or more

  The Education IT Issue Panel has released the 2012 top-ten issues facing higher education IT leadership, and instead of the customary reshuffling of the same deck, the issues reflect much of the tumult and dynamism facing higher education generally.  I find it interesting (and encouraging) that at the top of this year's list is "Updating IT Professionals' Skills and Roles to Accommodate Emerging Technologies and Changing IT Management and Service Delivery Models."  This reflects, in my view, the realization that higher education IT must change in order to fully realize the potential for transforming the institution, and therefore it's people must learn new skills, understand and accept new ways of solving problems, and not be tied down by past practices or institutional inertia. What follows in the remaining 9 top issues all speak, in some form or fashion, to the need for dramatic change, but not just in the areas of "funding IT" (code for cost containment or reduction), but rather the need to increase effectiveness and efficiency of the institution through the use of technology—leveraging the wave of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) to the institution's advantage, rather than viewing it as a threat and a problem to be contained. Although it's #10 of 10, IT Governance (and establishment and implementation of the governance model throughout the institution) is key to effectively acting upon many of the preceding issues in this year's list.  In the majority of cases, technology exists to meet the needs and requirements to effectively address many of the challenges outlined in top-ten issues list. Which brings me to my next point. Although I try not to sound too much like an Oracle commercial in these (all too infrequent) blog posts, I can't help but point out how much confluence there is between several of the top issues this year and what my colleagues and I have been evangelizing for some time. Starting from the bottom of the list up: 1) I'm gratified that research and the IT challenges it presents has made the cut.  Big Data (or Large Data as it's phased in the report) is rapidly going to overwhelm much of what exists today even at our most prepared and well-equipped research universities.  Combine large data with the significantly more stringent requirements around data preservation, archiving, sharing, curation, etc. coming from granting agencies like NSF, and you have the brewing storm that could result in a lot of "one-off" solutions to a problem that could very well be addressed collectively and "at scale."   2) Transformative effects of IT – while I see more and more examples of this, there is still much more that can be achieved. My experience tells me that culture (as the report indicates or at least poses the question) gets in the way more than technology not being up to task.  We spend too much time on "context" and not "core," and get lost in the weeds on the journey to truly transforming the institution with technology. 3) Analytics as a key element in improving various institutional outcomes.  In our work around Student Success, we see predictive "academic" analytics as essential to getting in front of the Student Success issue, regardless of how an institution or collections of institutions defines success.  Analytics must be part of the fabric of the key academic enterprise applications, not a bolt-on.  We will spend a significant amount of time on this topic during our semi-annual Education Industry Strategy Council meeting in Washington, D.C. later this month. 4) Cloud strategy for the broad range of applications in the academic enterprise.  Some of the recent work by Casey Green at the Campus Computing Survey would seem to indicate that there is movement in this area but mostly in what has been termed "below the campus" application areas such as collaboration tools, recruiting, and alumni relations.  It's time to get serious about sourcing elements of mature applications like student information systems, HR, Finance, etc. leveraging a model other than traditional on-campus custom. I've only selected a few areas of the list to highlight, but the unifying theme here (and this is where I run the risk of sounding like an Oracle commercial) is that these lofty goals cry out for partners that can bring economies of scale to bear on the problems married with a deep understanding of the nuances unique to higher education.  In a recent piece in Educause Review on Student Information Systems, the author points out that "best of breed is back". Unfortunately I am compelled to point out that best of breed is a large part of the reason we have made as little progress as we have as an industry in advancing some of the causes outlined above.  Don't confuse "integrated" and "full stack" for vendor lock-in.  The best-of-breed market forces that Ron points to ensure that solutions have to be "integratable" or they don't survive in the marketplace. However, by leveraging the efficiencies afforded by adopting solutions that are pre-integrated (and possibly metered out as a service) allows us to shed unnecessary costs – as difficult as these decisions are to make and to drive throughout the organization.
