• 8 Mac System Features You Can Access in Recovery Mode

  A Mac’s Recovery Mode is for more than just reinstalling Mac OS X. You’ll find many other useful troubleshooting utilities here — you can use these even if your Mac can’t boot normally. To access Recovery Mode, restart your Mac and press and hold the Command + R keys during the boot-up process. This is one of several hidden startup options on a Mac. Reinstall Mac OS X Most people know Recovery Mode as the place you go to reinstall OS X on your Mac. Recovery Mode will download the OS X installer files from teh Intenret if you don’t have them locally, so they don’t take up space on your disk and you’ll never have to hunt for an opearign system disc. Better yet, it will download up-to-date installation files so you don’t have to spend hours installing operating system updates later. Microsoft could learn a lot from Apple here. Restore From a Time Machine Backup Instead of reinstalling OS X, you can choose to restore your Mac from a time machine backup. This is like restoring a system image on another operating system. You’ll need an external disk containing a backup image created on the current computer to do this. Browse the Web The Get Help Online link opens the Safari web browser to Apple’s documentation site. It’s not limited to Apple’s website, though — you can navigate to any website you like. This feature allows you to access and use a browser on your Mac even if it isn’t booting properly. It’s ideal for looking up troubleshooting information. Manage Your Disks The Disk Utility option opens the same Disk Utility you can access from within Mac OS X. It allows you to partition disks, format them, scan disks for problems, wipe drives, and set up drives in a RAID configuration. If you need to edit partitions from outside your operating system, you can just boot into the recovery environment — you don’t have to download a special partitioning tool and boot into it. Choose the Default Startup Disk Click the Apple menu on the bar at the top of your screen and select Startup Disk to access the Choose Startup Disk tool. Use this tool to choose your computer’s default startup disk and reboot into another operating system. For example, it’s useful if you have Windows installed alongside Mac OS X with Boot Camp. Add or Remove an EFI Firmware Password You can also add a firmware password to your Mac. This works like a BIOS password or UEFI password on a Windows or Linux PC. Click the Utilities menu on the bar at the top of your screen and select Firmware Password Utility to open this tool. Use the tool to turn on a firmware password, which will prevent your computer from starting up from a different hard disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive without the password you provide. This prevents people form booting up your Mac with an unauthorized operating system. If you’ve already enabled a firmware password, you can remove it from here. Use Network Tools to Troubleshoot Your Connection Select Utilities > Network Utility to open a network diagnostic tool. This utility provides a graphical way to view your network connection information. You can also use the netstat, ping, lookup, traceroute, whois, finger, and port scan utilities from here. These can be helpful to troubleshoot Internet connection problems. For example, the ping command can demonstrate whether you can communicate with a remote host and show you if you’re experiencing packet loss, while the traceroute command can show you where a connection is failing if you can’t connect to a remote server. Open a Terminal If you’d like to get your hands dirty, you can select Utilities > Terminal to open a terminal from here. This terminal allows you to do more advanced troubleshooting. Mac OS X uses the bash shell, just as typical Linux distributions do. Most people will just need to use the Reinstall Mac OS X option here, but there are many other tools you can benefit from. If the Recovery Mode files on your Mac are damaged or unavailable, your Mac will automatically download them from Apple so you can use the full recovery environment.

• Ubuntu 12.04 installation aborts without giving any errors on Sony Vaio

  I'm not able to install the release ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386 on the laptop below: Sony Vaio VGN-FE21H CPU: Intel Core Duo T2300 1.66GHz Memory: 2GB DDR2 533MHz HDD: 100GB Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 7400 256MB I'm using the ISO "ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso" burned into a DVD. I know the ISO is OK because I used it to successfully install on Virtualbox. Live DVD boots and runs OK, but I cannot install from it or directly from the boot menu. The installation goes through all the steps until the final part where is asked the Name, Name of PC and password. The problem is in the next step where it should start copying files and present some screens and features of Ubuntu. In this part the installation just close without any error message. If I am running the installation inside the live DVD it closes and returns to the home screen of the Live. If I am running straight from the boot it closes the graphic interface and restarts the PC. Does anybody know or faced the same problem?

• Oracle Open World 2012: SQL Developer Recap

  Last week was the ‘big show’ in San Francisco. I was very happy to meet many of you in person. And many of you had questions – lots of questions! We had full or overflowing rooms for our sessions and hands-on-labs. The SQL Developer ‘booths’ were also slammed several times. So exciting to see so many of YOU excited about SQL Developer. It’s very cool to hear the stories of our tools saving you and your organizations so much time (and money!) Instead of doing a Day 0 – Day 9 recap, I thought I’d share with you the questions that I heard more than once. And just for giggles, I’ll throw in some answers as well So in no particular order… What’s the difference between Oracle SQL Developer & Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler? Mathematically speaking – two words. But as far as the actual modeling features go, there’s no difference between the two applications. The same ‘code’ or features as it pertains to data modeling and design are in both tools. However, in SQL Developer you have all of the OTHER features fighting for real estate in the UI. So I have a general rule of thumb – if you spend MOST of your time in the database, use SQL Developer. And if you spend most of your time in the data model, run the separate and dedicated program, Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler. Here’s a couple of screenshots to drive home the UI point: Oracle SQL Developer Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler running INSIDE of SQL Developer. Notice how the Modeler menu items fold under the file menu? Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler Easier to navigate and manipulate your models with the stand alone modeler. Just no worksheet to run your ad-hoc queries, etc. Don’t forget you can disable the Data Modeler inside of SQL Developer via the Extensions preference page. How can I model my table partitions? Partitioning is defined via the Physical model. So after you have finished your relational model, you need to generate a physical model. Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler Physical Model and Partitioning Open the properties for your physical model table. Enable the ‘partitioned’ property. Once you do so, the ‘Partitioning’ page will activate. Lots and lots of partitioning support and options here But what about Interval Partitioning? An extension of range partitioning in 11gR2, we don’t currently support this partitioning scheme in SQL Developer. But we’re working on it! Can SQL Developer ignore column order when comparing models? Yes! After you start a model compare, one of your options is to disregard the order of an attribute or column definition. Tell SQL Developer you don’t care when your column shows up, just as long as it DOES show up. Wow, you got a lot of questions around modeling! Is that normal? Yes! While we appreciate that many folks inherit their applications and associated designs, new applications are being ‘born’ every day. Since both of our tools are free for anyone to design their new Oracle applications with, we attract a fair amount of attention I want to do a Hands On Lab. How do I get your software and instructional guides? Go here. Download VirtualBox. Then download the VB image. Import the appliance. Start it. Connect oracle/oracle on the OEL VM. • Internet Explorer: Flash 1 item remaining- Movie Not Loaded

  A couple of days ago I started having an issue where if Id go to Youtube.com to look at a Flash movie, Id get to see only a black screen in the movie area. A right click on the movie and Id see Movie not loaded. In addition, the browser status bar reports 1 item remaining basically meaning, Im waiting for this movie to load. Of course, this never goes away. Heres how I fixed it: In Internet Explorer, choose Tools / Internet Options. • Ubuntu 12.04 installation problem

  Okay, at the beginning of the installation, it went well. My laptop is connected to power source, the internet, I have also checked the boxes "install updates while installation", "install third party plugin". After inputting location, keyboard layout info and user's details and password, the installation took place. But after 3/4 of the installation, it stopped, right above the progress bar, it displayed "installing system", I clicked on the arrow below it, the terminal-like screen also stopped carrying out the process. I then clicked on the "Skip" button, nothing happens. I thought it was the problem of my laptop, then I did another fresh installation, same thing happened. The terminal-like screen was showing some different words. But it's not an error message, just some installation info. Does anyone have valuable solution to this problem?

• How to Troubleshoot TFS Build Server Failure?

  Ever found your self in this helpless situation where you think you have tried every possible suggestion on the internet to bring the build server back but it just won’t work. Well some times before hunting around for a solution it is important to understand what the problem is, if the error messages in the build logs don’t seem to help you can always enable tracing on the build server to get more information on what could possibly be the root cause of failure. In this blog post today I’ll be showing you how to enable tracing on, - TFS 2010/11 Server - Build Server - Client Enable Tracing on Team Foundation Server 2010/2011 On the Team Foundation Server navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Application Tier\Web Services, right click web.config and from the context menu select edit.          Search for the <appSettings> node in the config file and set the value of the key ‘traceWriter’ to true.          In the <System.diagnostics> tag set the value of switches from 0 to 4 to set the trace level to maximum to write diagnostics level trace information.          Restart the TFS Application pool to force this change to take effect. The application pool restart will impact any one using the TFS server at present. Note - It is recommended that you do not make any changes to the TFS production application server, this can have serious consequences and can even jeopardize the installation of your server.          Download the Debug view tool from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896647.aspx and set it to capture “Global Events”. Perform any actions in the Team Explorer on the client machine, you should be able to see a series of trace data in the debug view tool now.         Enable Tracing on Build Controller/Agents Log on to the Build Controller/Agent and Navigate to the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Tools         Look for the configuration file ‘TFSBuildServiceHost.exe.config’ if it is not already there create a new text file and rename it to ‘TFSBuildServiceHost.exe.config’         To Enable tracing uncomment the <system.diagnostics> and paste the snippet below if it is not already there. <configuration> <system.diagnostics> <switches> <add name="BuildServiceTraceLevel" value="4"/> </switches> <trace autoflush="true" indentsize="4"> <listeners> <add name="myListener" type="Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TeamFoundationTextWriterTraceListener, Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Common, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" initializeData="c:\logs\TFSBuildServiceHost.exe.log" /> <remove name="Default" /> </listeners> </trace> </system.diagnostics> </configuration> The highlighted path above is where the Log file will be created. If the folder is not already there then create the folder, also, make sure that the account running the build service has access to write to this folder.         Restart the build Controller/Agent service from the administration console (or net stop tfsbuildservicehost & net start tfsbuildservicehost) in order for the new setting to be picked up.         Enable TFS Tracing on the Client Machine On the client machine, shut down Visual Studio, navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common 7\IDE          Search for devenv.exe.config, make a backup copy of the config file and right click the file and from the context menu select edit. If its not already there create this file.          Edit devenv.exe.config by adding the below code snippet before the last </configuration> tag <system.diagnostics> <switches> <add name="TeamFoundationSoapProxy" value="4" /> <add name="VersionControl" value="4" /> </switches> <trace autoflush="true" indentsize="3"> <listeners> <add name="myListener" type="Microsoft.TeamFoundation.TeamFoundationTextWriterTraceListener,Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Common, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" initializeData="c:\tf.log" /> <add name="perfListener" type="Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Client.PerfTraceListener, Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Client, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"/> </listeners> </trace> </system.diagnostics> The highlighted path above is where the Log file will be created. If the folder is not already there then create the folder. Start Visual Studio and after a bit of activity you should be able to see the new log file being created on the folder specified in the config file. • Backtrack installation interrupted once, installed another time

  I installed Backtrack 5 from a Live CD yesterday and while installing, i closed my laptop to let it run while I sleep. But then I remembered my friend told me the plastic of his computer melted this way, so i opened it again. It put it on power save, and somehow the installation was interrupted. The day after, I tried again and this time it worked. Now, I have a GRUB Menu With Win7 and twice the Ubuntu + Safe mode or whatever it's called. How can I remove the failed installation without deleting Win7 or the successful installation? Normally I would use EasyBCD and delete the partitions, but this time I couldn't start Backtrack then. • Installation Won't Finish

  I installed Ubuntu 12.10 (32-bit) on my Acer Aspire One notebook and replaced the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Everything went fine, but right before the installation finished, it got stuck. The loading bar at the bottom is full, and it says "Copying installation logs," but my mouse won't move and it's been at this point for almost an hour. Also, the mouse is in the loading spin, so I know my computer didn't freeze. Should I just restart now? I'm not sure if it's at the last stage, but it seems like it is, and this has taken more than the rest of the installation together. EDIT- I had my computer go in sleep mode for a minute and now I can move the mouse again. When I click the "Copying.." part, it says "Activation (eth1) Stage 4 of 5 complete" but "5 of 5" (I assume that comes next) isn't starting.

• Ubuntu 12.04 installation never finishes

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on an old Dell Latitude C400 laptop previously running windows XP using an Ubuntu install CD. The OS runs fine off the CD if a bit slow, and the installation starts off fine. However once the progress bar is filled I get put back to the desktop and nothing happens, first I assumed that the installation was completed but when I restarted the computer and booted from the hard drive nothing happened. I tried to install a few more times but the same thing happens. Am I doing something wrong? I do not get a error message or a installation complete notification. Is there any way I could get some kind of debug screen or log to see if something went wrong or at least follow the installation progress in more detail. Thanks for the help.

• VSDB to SSDT Part 2 : SQL Server 2008 Server Project &hellip; with SSDT

  With Visual Studio 2012 and the use of SSDT technology, there is only one type of database project : SQL Server Database Project. With Visual Studio 2010, we used to have SQL Server 2008 Server Project which we used to define server-level objects, mostly logins and linked servers. A convenient wizard allowed for creation of this type of projects. It does not exists anymore. Here is how to create an equivalent of the SQL Server 2008 Server Project  with Visual Studio 2012: Create a new SQL Server Database Project : it will be created empty Create a new SQL Schema Compare ( SQL menu item > Schema Compare > New Schema Comparison ) As a source, select any database on the SQL server you want to mimic Set the target to be your newly Database Project In the Schema Compare options (cog-like icon), Object Types pane, set the options as below. You might want to tweak those and select only the object types you want. Then, run the comparison, review and select your changes and apply them to the project.

• MAAS not working

  I'm trying a whole week to make MASS to work, but no results. This is the procedure: maas createsuperuser sudo apt-get install maas-dhcp maas-import-isos apt-get install maas-enlist tftpd-hpa maas-import-isos After this I start node machine with PXE as default first boot device, and select option maas-enlist. Sistem start to installing some things, and after that on MAAS WebUI stand 1 node. But when I click on Node button on WebUI or refresh page, it show 0 node. Command cobbler system list showing: root@maas-serv:~# cobbler system list default node-3ee116ea-a8b2-11e1-a735-50e549e38206 Also, sometime this procedure register one node, but when registering second one, same problem like I described up. root@maas-serv:/var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg# is empty, only default is there. Then join us as we look at the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) enhanced version of Internet Explorer 8. Setting CEOP Up We chose to install the whole CEOP pack in order to have access to complete set of CEOP Tools. The install process will be comprised of two parts…it will begin with CEOP branded windows showing the components being installed… Note: The components can be downloaded separately for those who only want certain CEOP components added to their browser. Then it will move to the traditional Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 install windows. One thing that we did notice is that here you will be told that you will need to restart your computer but in other windows a log off/log on process is mentioned. Just to make certain that everything goes smoothly we recommend restarting your computer when the installation process is complete. In the EULA section you can see the versions of Windows that the CEOP Pack works with. Once you get past the traditional Microsoft install windows you will be dropped back into the CEOP branded windows. CEOP in Action After you have restarted your computer and opened Internet Explorer you will notice that your homepage has been changed. When it comes to your children that is not a bad thing in this instance. It will also give you an opportunity to look through the CEOP online resources. For the moment you may be wondering where everything is but do not worry. First you can find the two new search providers in the drop-down menu for your “Search Bar” and select a new default if desired. The second thing to look for are the new links that have been added to your “Favorites Menu”. These links can definitely be helpful for you and your family. The third part will require your “Favorites Bar” to be visible in order to see the “Click CEOP Button”. If you have not previously done so you will need to turn on subscribing for “Web Slices”. Click on “Yes” to finish the subscription process. Clicking on the “CEOP Button” again will show all kinds of new links to help provide information for you and your children. Notice that the top part is broken down into “topic categories” while the bottom part is set up for “age brackets”…very nice for helping you focus on the information that you want and/or need. Looking for information and help on a particular topic? Clicking on the “Cyberbullying Link” for example will open the following webpage with information about cyberbullying and a link to get help with the problem. Need something that is focused on your child’s age group? Clicking on the “8-10? Link” as an example opened this page. Want information that is focused on you? The “Parent? Link” leads to this page. The “topic categories & age brackets” make the CEOP Button a very helpful and “family friendly” addition to Internet Explorer. Perhaps you (or your child) want to conduct a search for something that is affecting your child. As you type in a “search term” both of the search providers will provide helpful suggestions for dealing with the problem. We felt that these were very nice suggestions in both instances here… Conclusion We have been able to give you a good peek at what the CEOP Tools can do but the best way to see how helpful it can be for you and your family is try it for yourself. Your children’s safety and happiness is worth it. • NVIDIA graphics driver on Macbook Pro 10,1

  I just installed 14.04 over my old 12.04 partition on my Macbook Pro 10,1 (which is dual-booting with OS X) by following the instructions here. The only difference is that I'm using rEFInd instead of rEFIt. The proprietary NVIDIA drivers worked great with 12.04, but now I'm unable to boot into Unity with it in 14.04. Generally, I just get a black screen after the Grub menu, though occasionally I get some kind of panic screen like this, where I see errors like: [drm: __gen6_gt_force_wake_mt_get] *ERROR* Timed out waiting for forcewake old ack to clear. [drm: __gen6_gt_wait_for_thread_c0] *ERROR* GT thread status wait timed out [drm: __intel_ring_setup_status_page] *ERROR* render ring: wait for SyncFlush to complete for TLB invalidation timed out etc. Using the nouveau drivers works fine, but everything feels sluggish so I would really like to get the NVIDIA drivers working. Has anyone successfully gotten the NVIDIA drivers working with the GT-650M Mac Edition?

  There are several ways to get data from a query or a table|view to the clipboard. You know the tried and true, copy and paste. But what if you only want one or more columns, not every column? There are several ways to do this, let’s see if we can’t identify all of them. Write your query to only include the data you want Obvious? Yes. Needed to be said? Definitely. The best tuning tip is to only ask for the data you need, only when you absolutely need it. But let’s look at a few more practical ways to do this. Hide the unwanted columns Mouse right click on an column header. In the context menu, select ‘Columns.’ Hide the columns you don’t want. Copy and paste. WYSIWYG Grids, Hide Columns and Filter Rows Mouse select the columns Obvious, but a bit painful. For a very large dataset, you’ll be holding down the Shift and PageDown buttons – but it works. Remember to use Ctrl+Shift+C to get the column headers with the data. Use the Export Wizard This used to be called ‘Unload’ – agreed, not a great name. So, we changed it. In a grid, right mouse click on the data, and on the context menu, select ‘Export…’ Select your format – I suggest ‘delimited’ or ‘fixed’ for copying data to the clipboard. You can export to the clipboard, yes you can! Click ‘Next.’ Click in the Columns dialog, and choose the columns you want copied. Trim the columns you don't want copied Click ‘Finish.’ Alt or Ctrl tab to your window or application of choice. And Paste! • Attempted to dual boot with Windows and now can only run Ubuntu

  Very recently, I decided to attempt to dual boot Ubuntu with my already installed windows 8. Everything worked perfectly, I manually set up disk partitions (this is all on 1 hard drive), and it loaded up Ubuntu fine. HOWEVER, now when I try to load up my computer it only has 2 options in the boot menu and both just load up Windows (both were something related to hard disk). I also can only boot from legacy hard disk things. (I already only was able to aside from my USB that I installed Windows from) The Windows files are still accessible from Ubuntu, but I cannot just load Windows. There is no option to. I also don't have the 2 buttons for each operating system I was expecting. I can only select the thing to load from BIOS. So, my question is, how do I load the Windows partition on my hard drive? I'm sorry if I'm a bit clueless I am just new to both Linux and dual-booting.

  Basically what I want to do is to convert this: http://localhost/jariungu/user_caleg.php?idCaleg2014=3 into this: http://localhost/jariungu/caleg/3 I have managed to make /jariungu/caleg/3 to direct to the original URL (as in, if I open that URL, it directs me to the appropriate page). The problem is, once opened, the URL returns to the original, ugly one in the address bar. This is what I tried.
