• new project; entire node.js app

  I have been looking into Node.js, express and Nowjs and love how easy it is to have real time interactions between clients. My background is mostly from CodeIgniter MVC using PHP and MYSql. I want to re make a current web project of mine from scratch to make everything better and more real time with this newer technology. After researching and doing test examples I want to use node.js , express and Nowjs for the real time interactions once someone connects to the socket.io to pull data back to clients. But use Code Igniter for the control of the site and user management , possible shopping cart/store , pretty much everything else. This is purely due to time constraints and that I am already familiar with doing it that way. I have been looking at MongoDB as an alternative to MySql, Basically the app is going to be multiple chat rooms all on one page. with the ability of notifications and private messaging. Lots of data transfer and images. before I started piecing it together I wanted to get people who have already done something similar. My model would use Code Igniter and MySQL to render the page and then connect them onto a node.js server and broadcast using express and nowjs would using a mongoDB be better than mySQL for tons of messages and data being stored or MYSQL? Also does it make since to not make the whole site on Node.js , kinda piece it together like that? • A Hot Topic - Profitability and Cost Management

  Maybe it's due to the recent recession, or current economic recovery but a hot topic and area of focus for many organizations these days is profitability and cost management.  For most organizations, aggressive cost-cutting and cost management were critical to remaining profitable while top line revenue was flat or shrinking.  However, now we are seeing many organizations taking a more "surgical" approach to profitability and cost management, by accurately allocating revenue and costs to individual product lines, services, customer segments, locations, channels and other lines of business to understand which ones are truly profitable and which ones are not.  Based on these insights, managers can make more informed decisions about which products or services to invest in or retire, how to price their products or services for different customer segments, and where to focus their marketing and customer service resources. The most common industries where this product, service and customer-focused costing and profitability analysis is being adopted include financial services, consumer packaged goods, retail and manufacturing.  However we are seeing adoption of profitability and cost management applications in other industries and use cases.  Here are a few examples: Telecommunications Industry:  Network Costing and Management to identify the most cost effective and/or profitable network areas, to optimize existing resources, infrastructure and network capacity.  Regulatory Cost Accounting to perform more accurate allocations of revenue and costs across services and customer segments, improve ability to set billing rates for future periods, for various products and customer segments and more easily develop analysis needed for rate case proposals. Healthcare Insurance:  Visually, justifiable Medical Loss Ratio results, better knowledge of the cost to service healthcare plans and members, accurate understanding of member segment and plan profitability, improved marketing programs through better member segmentation. Public Sector:  Statutory / Regulatory Compliance:  A variety of statutory and regulatory documents state explicitly or implicitly that the use of government resources must be properly tracked and tied to performance goals.  Managerial costing methods implemented through Cost Management applications provide unparalleled visibility into costs and shared services usage throughout a Public Sector agency. Funding Support:  Regulations require public sector funding requests to be evaluated based upon the ability to achieve performance goals against the associated cost.   Improved visibility and understanding of costs of different programs/services means that organizations can demonstrably monitor performance and the associated resource costs improve the chances of having their funding requests granted. • Why can't I upgrade my kernel via the terminal?

  If I type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade I can only see that the kernel packages are kept back, and not installed. As the screenshot shows. If I then start the update manager I can install the kernel, with no problems at all. As the second screenshot shows. Why is this? The kernel is a new package and not an upgrade of an old one, this is why you can't use the command upgrade that upgrades packages. You need to use the command dist-upgrade to install new packages.

• Fast pixelshader 2D raytracing

  I'd like to do a simple 2D shadow calculation algorithm by rendering my environment into a texture, and then use raytracing to determine what pixels of the texture are not visible to the point light (simply handed to the shader as a vec2 position) . A simple brute force algorithm per pixel would looks like this: line_segment = line segment between current pixel of texture and light source For each pixel in the texture: { if pixel is not just empty space && pixel is on line_segment output = black else output = normal color of the pixel } This is, of course, probably not the fastest way to do it. Question is: What are faster ways to do it or what are some optimizations that can be applied to this technique?

• Drawing isometric map in canvas / javascript

  I have a problem with my map design for my tiles. I set player position which is meant to be the middle tile that the canvas is looking at. How ever the calculation to put them in x:y pixel location is completely messed up for me and i don't know how to fix it. • Forms&Reports upgrade characterset issues

  Hello,This quick post is based on my findings during recent IMC workshops, especially those related to upgrading the Forms 6i/9i/10g applications to Forms 11g platform. The upgrade process itself is pretty straightforward and it basically requires recompiling your Forms application with a latest version of frmcmp tool. For some cases though, especially when you migrate from Forms 6i which is a client-server architecture to a 3-tier web solution (Forms 11g), you need to rewrite some parts of your code to make it run on new platform. The things you need to change range from reimplementing (using webutil library) typical client-site functionality like local IO operation, access to WinAPI, invoking DLLs etc. to changing deprecated or obsolete APIs like RUN_PRODUCT to RUN_REPORT_OBJECT. To automate those changes Oracle provides complete Java API  which allows you to manipulate the code and structure of you modules (JDAPI). To make it even easier we can use Forms Migration Assistant tool (written in Java using JDAPI) which is able to replace all occurrences of old API entries with their 11g equivalents or warn you when the replacement is not possible. You can also add your own replacement definitions in the search_replace.properties file. But you need to be aware of some issues that can be encountered using this tool. First of all if you are using some hard-coded text inside your triggers you may notice that after processing them by the Migration Assistant tool the national characters may be lost. This is due to the fact that you need to explicitly tell Java application (which MA really is) what kind of characterset it should use to read those text properly. In order to do that just add to a script calling MA the following line:  export JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS=-Dfile.encoding=<JAVA_ISO_ENCODING>  when the particular encoding must match the NLS_LANG in your Forms Builder environment (for example for Polish characterset you need to use ISO-8859-2).Second issue you can encounter related to national charactersets is lack of national symbols in you reports after migration. This can be solved by adding appropriate NLS_LANG entry in your reports environment. Sometimes instead of particular characterset you see "Greek characters" in your reports. This is just default font used by reports engine instead of the one defined in your report. To solve it you must copy fonts definitions from your old environment (e.g. Forms 10g installation) to appropriate directory in new installation (usually AFM folder).   so i've been googling this question all day, and i've tried everything. i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling USC multiple times, i've tried basically all of the terminal commands that these forums/ask boards have recommended, to no avail. i'm at a loss. i'm using ubuntu 12.04 :O edit// i should probably be more specific about my problem! ahah. everytime i try to open USC, the frame and everything will show up & it'll load for about 5 seconds, then it'll turn gray & i'll have to force quit it :I

• How should I update Ajax Control Toolkit in VS 2010?

  Suppose if there is a new version available of Ajax Control Toolkit then how should I install/update it in my visual studio 2010 which has already install older version of same toolkit? I would like to install new one while older toolkit would totally uninstalled, because mostly new toolkit always has all controls that were in the old toolkit & also some new controls. Then 1) Should I've to remove .dll file in my toolkit installation folder and place new .dll file there? If I do so then will VS 2010 automatically delete older entries of toolkit controls in .NET Components list and place new control there? Or 2) Should I've to uninstall old toolkit manually i.e delete .dll file and uncheck all entries in .NET Components list & after that install new one from scratch?

In this example an anonymous object is created with a Month and MonthName property. You can use this solution to populate your dropdown list with months or to display a user friendly month name.

• Avoid apt-get update while installing softwares on ubuntu, possible?

  I want to install a 27KB lens( reddit-lens: here ) & this "apt-get update" is going to download 20MBs(!) of data for the same. I want to avoid this update bcoz i am on a limited bandwidth connection. I also tried to install .deb file(27KB) for this lens but it says "dependancy is not satisfiable gir1.2-unity-3.0". I went on to http://www.pkgs.org to get that package & there is no version available for ubuntu 12.04. What should I do? Can i install softwares without updating cache? Is that update necessary? Also installation of some softwares requires updating cache while others dont, why?

• Friday Fun: Destroy the Web

  Another Friday has arrived and it’s time to screw off on company time. Today we take a look at a unique game Add-on for Firefox called Destroy the Web. Destroy the Web Once you install the Add-on and restart Firefox, you’ll see the Destroy the Web icon on the toolbar. Click on it to destroy whatever webpage you’re on.   The game starts up and gives you a 3 second countdown… Now move the target over different elements of the page to destroy them. You have 30 seconds to destroy the site contents. If you are angry at a particular company or the one you work for, this can give you some fun stress relief by destroying it’s website. After you’ve destroyed as much of the page as possible, you’re given a score. You get different amounts of points for destroying certain elements on the page. Basically destroy as much as possible to get the most points. You can submit your score and check out some of the scoreboard leaders as well.  There are some cool sound effects and arcade sounding background music, so make sure to turn the volume down while playing. Or you can go into the Add-on options and disable it. If you want a unique way to let off some steam before the weekend starts, this is a fun way of doing it. • Upgrade without internet & CD

  Ok I have an Acer Aspire One D255E netbook. Ubuntu 10.04 & 10.10 hangs on install from USB for both, so could not install them. However Ubuntu 9.10 worked and installed. Then I figured I would just connect to the internet and update. However, the internet does not work (doesnt show up in notification), but it worked when 10.04 & 10.10 where used as a live usb. Now is there a way to update just using 10.04-desktop iso from a USB or just somewhere in 9.10 say documents folder? Thank you for any help

• Trouble filtering using rsyslog as syslog server for router

  I am trying to configure rsyslog (Ubuntu 12.04 Server) to log events from my router. I found this link which got me most of the way there. I am able to get the events logged from the router, and since I don't them logged in syslog, I set up a filter in rsyslog.conf like this: :fromhost-ip, isequal, "192.168.2.1" /var/log/linksys.log & ~ This works, the only problem is now I am not getting any SSHD logs in auth.log. I am really stumped why this would be, SSHD is a local service. I tried using a different filter instead: :msg,contains, "RV042" /var/log/linksys.log & ~ since RV042 is the name of the router, but this doesn't log anything. Any ideas?

• Setting up Ubuntu Server as a Router with DHCPD and 3 Ethernet devices

  My configuration: Ubuntu 12.04 DHCP3-server eth0, eth1, eth2 Edit: removed br0&br1 eth0 is the external connection eth1 & eth2 are the internal network eth1 and eth2 are supposed to be seperate networks of student/teachers respectivly. What I would like to have is the internet from external device bridged to device 1 and 2, with the DHCP server controlling the two internal devices. Its already working with DHCP, the part I am stuck on is bridging for internet. After changing the subnet to 255.255.255.0 the pings will pass through, however, I cannot get DNS requests to pass?
