  I am currently porting an application written in MySQL3 and PHP4 to MySQL5 and PHP5. On analysis I found several SQL queries which uses "select * from tablename" even if only one column(field) is processed in PHP. The table has almost 60 columns and it has a primary key. In most cases, the only column used is id which is the primary key. Will there be any performance boost if I use queries in which the column names are explicitly mentioned instead of * ? (In this application there is only one method which we need all the columns and all other methods return only a subset of the columns)

  Hello, In an app we are calculating a SHA1Hmac in java using the following: SecretKey key = new SecretKeySpec(secret, "HmacSHA1"); Mac m = Mac.getInstance("HmacSHA1"); m.init(secret); byte[] hmac = m.doFinal(data); And later, the hmac is verified in C# - on a SmartCard - using: HMACSHA1 hmacSha = new HMACSHA1(secret); hmacSha.Initialize(); byte[] hmac = hmacSha.ComputeHash(data); However, the result is not the same. Did I overlook something important? The inputs seem to be the same. Now I want to write a stored procedure which gets a node id and returns a result set that contains that node and all of its parents. For example, suppose that my table has filled with this data: 1, null, 'root' 2, 1 , 'level_1' 3, 2 , 'level_2' Now I want to get all parent nodes of node 3 (nodes 1 and 2) and return a result set that contains all tree records.   While reskining GridView (ListView with more columns), I ran into a problem, that I couldn't change the color of the Highlighted row. I searched the internet and found out, that adding this can help. <SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.HighlightBrushKey}" Color="Transparent" /> <SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}" Color="Transparent" /> This solved the issue for some people but it didnt help me. The Highlight color was still in system default. I finally managed to change the color of the selected row, but the highlight is still visible around the border of the row plus i need to get rid of the Highlight in the ColumnHeaders. • Clustered index dilemma - ID or sort?

  I have a table with two very important fields: id INT identity(1,1) PRIMARY KEY identifiersortcode VARCHAR(900) My app always sorts and pages search results in the UI based on identifiersortcode, but all table joins (and they are legion) are on the id field. (Aside: yes, the sort code really is that long. There's a strong BL reason.) Also, due to O/RM use, most SELECT statements are going to pull almost every column. Currently, the clustered index is on id, but I'm wondering if the TOP / ORDER BY portion of most queries would make identifiersortcode a more attractive option as the clustered key, even considering all of the table joins going on. Inserts on the table and changes to the identifiersortcode are limited enough that changing my clustered index would be a problem for insert/update operations. Trying to make the sort code's non-clustered index a covering index (using INCLUDE) is not a good option. There are a number of large columns, and some of them have a lot of update activity.

  Hi All, I want to enable Access for assistive devices in System Preferences programmatically. But Problem is that my application is not running as root user and i do not want my application to be as root user and also should not ask for any authentication in between. I want to tap all keyboard events globally. I am using CGEventTapCreate() for the same.In the documentation of CGEventTapCreate() API it is mentioned that, Event taps receive key up and key down events if one of the following conditions is true: The current process is running as the root user. Access for assistive devices is enabled. In Mac OS X v10.4 & later, you can enable this feature using System Preferences, Universal Access panel, Keyboard view. I tried manually by checking the Enable Access for assistive devices from System Preference and it gives me expected output. So is there any way to do the same via program without asking for authentication and also application is not running as root user? Thanks, Dheeraj.

• Is Eclipse Remote System Explorer broken on Windows?

  I have the following setup on Windows 7 Ultimate x64: Eclipse Indigo 2.7.2 (Build: M20120208-0800) Remote System Explorer 3.3.2 (see screenshot) (Oracle/Sun) Java 1.6 Update 31 (x86) Despite all my best efforts I am unable to connect to a remote system (a Centos 5.6 server on my local LAN) using a Remote System Explorer SSH connection - I've tried both password authentication and using my SSH private key. Here is a screenshot of both the Eclipse error dialogue and what is logged in my /var/log/secure log file: /var/log/secure: Apr 1 12:00:21 nagios sshd[6176]: Received disconnect from 172.16.3.88: 3: com.jcraft.jsch.JSchException: Auth fail When I connect for the first time I do get prompted to verify the authenticity of the remote host and the RSA key fingerprint. But that's as far as things go. Performing the same operation with the same credentials on my Fedora Core 16 box (also running the same version of Eclipse and Java) to the same server is successful. This leads me to believe that RSE SSH support on Windows is either broken or there's some piece of the SSH-on-Windows puzzle I'm missing. Is this the case?

  I need some kind of priority queue to store pairs <key, value>. Values are unique, but keys aren't. I will be performing the following operations (most common first): random insertion; retrieving (and removing) all elements with the least key. random removal (by value); I can't use std::priority_queue because it only supports removing the head. For now, I'm using an unsorted std::list. Insertion is performed by just pushing new elements to the back (O(1)). Operation 2 sorts the list with std::sort (O(N*logN)), before performing the actual retrieval. Removal, however, is O(n), which is a bit expensive. Any idea of a better data structure?

It has three columns which are as follows:- The column number_pk (int) is the primary key of my table in which I have made the auto increment feature on for that column. Now I have deleted two rows from that table say Number_pk= 5 and Number_pk =6. The table which I get now is like this:- Now if I again enter two new rows in this table with the same value I get the two new Number_pk starting from 7 and 8 i.e, My question is that what is the logic behind this since I have deleted the two rows from the table. I know that a simple answer is because I have set the auto increment on for the primary key of my table. But I want to know is there any way that I can insert the two new entries starting from the last Number_pk without changing the design of my table? And how the SQL Server manage this record since I have deleted the rows from the database??

• Twitter xAuth vs open source

  Hi I am developing an open source desktop twitter client. I would like to take advantage on the new xAuth authentication method, however my app is open source which means that if I put the keys directly into the source file, it may be a vulnerability (am I correct? The twitter support guy told me). On the other hand, putting the key directly into a binary also doesn't make sense. I am writing my application in python, so if I just supply the pyc files, it is one more seconds to get the keys, thanks to the excellent reflection capatibilities of Python. If I create a small .so file with the keys, it is also trivial to obtain the key by looking at the raw binary (keys has fixed length and character set). What is your opinion? Is it really a secutiry hole to expose the API keys?

  I have set up my mapping file and classes as suggested by many articles class A { ... IList BBag {get;set;} ... } class B { ... A aObject {get;set;} ... } <class name="A">...<bag name="BBag" table="B" inverse="true" lazy="false"><key column="A_ID" /><one-to-many class="B" /></bag>... <class name="B">...<many-to-one name="aObject" class="A" column="A_ID" />... I added a set of A's to the A table and a set of B's to the B table, all the data is stored as expected. However if I try and access aInstance.BBag.Count I get a null reference exception. I think I missing some key knowledge on how an bag gets instantiated. Thanks

  I am making an IRC bot in php to read content of a channel. Bot is done fine.But the messages are encrypted With blowfish encryption. i have the key and all, i tried PHP's code below but didn;t worked. echo mcrypt_decrypt(MCRYPT_BLOWFISH,$key,$input,MCRYPT_MODE_ECB); For more help the encryption is done via drftpd site bot.
