  • How do I create multiple submit buttons for the same form in Rails?

    I need to have multiple submit buttons. I have a form which creates an instance of Contact_Call. One button creates it as normal. The other button creates it but needs to have a different :attribute value from the default, and it also needs to set the attribute on a different, but related model used in the controller. How do I do that? I can't change the route, so is there a way to send a different variable that gets picked up by [:params]? And if I do then, what do I do in the controller, set up a case statement?

  • How can I reduce the number of loops in this VIEW in Rails when using :collection?

    I am using the :collection to go through all the Contacts that are part of a given Campaign. But within that Campaign I check for three different Models (each with their own partial). Feels like I am going through the list of Contacts 3x.   • Is there a method I can use across controllers and if so, how do I use it?

    I have several controllers that take an instance of different classes each (Email, Call, Letter, etc) and they all have to go through this same substitution: @email.message.gsub!("{FirstName}", @contact.first_name) @email.message.gsub!("{Company}", @contact.company_name) @email.message.gsub!("{Colleagues}", @colleagues.to_sentence) @email.message.gsub!("{NextWeek}", (Date.today + 7.days).strftime("%A, %B %d")) @email.message.gsub!("{ContactTitle}", @contact.title ) So, for example, @call.message for Call, @letter.message for Letter, etcetera. This isn't very dry. I'd like to have something like def messagesub(asset) @asset.message.gsub.... end or something like that so I can just use messagesub method in each controller.

  • How can I change the tags/css class of some dynamic text based on output from a helper?

    I have a repeated line which outputs something like: Call John Jones in -3 days (status) I have a helper called show_status(contact,email) which will output whether that particular email had been sent to that particular contact. If it is "sent," then that entire line should show up as "strike out." Similarly, if the number of days is -3 (<0), the line should be formatted in red. Here's my hack, but there must be a cleaner way to put the logic into the controller?     I have a binary files which needs to be sent as a string to a third-party web-service. Turns out it requires that it needs to be base64 encoded. In ruby I use the following: body = body << IO.read("#{@postalcard.postalimage.path}") body is a strong which conists of a bunch of strings as parameters. So...how do I base64 encode it into this string? Thanks.

    How do I model having multiple Addresses for a Company and assign a single Address to a Contact? Contacts belong_to a Company. A Company has_many Contacts. A Company also has_many Addresses. And each Contact belongs_to an Address. How do I model this? I have Model/Contacts.rb belong_to :Company belong_to :Address (?) Model/Company.rb has_many :Contacts has_many :Addresses Address is an aggregation of :street1, :street2, :city, :state, :zip so not clear exactly what to do there. So what would I do in my _form so that when I have a contact/new I am able to either default to a main address or select one of the others? If none of them match, adding for a Contact makes that address available to any subsequent contact?

    I am trying to create a Single Table Inheritance. However, the Controller must be able to know which class to find or create. These are based on another class. For example, ContactEvent with type = Letter needs to grab attributes from a corresponding Model called Letter. Here's what I've tried to do and hit a snag, labelled below.     I on the Show of "Contacts" and want, from that page, to submit a Comment that is related to the Contact. I learned this on a pretty outdated book. Basically, I want to add a new object belonging to a Model while on the Show of a different Model. Would formtastic help me, and if so, how?

    I am setting up the Single Table Inheritance, using ContactEvent as the Model that ContactEmail, ContactLetter, and ContactCall will all inherit. But I'm stumped on how to create the routing and the controller. For example, let's say I want to create a new ContactEvent with type Email. I would like a way to do the following: new_contact_event_path(contact, email) This would take the instance from Contact model and from Email model. Inside, I would imagine the contact_event_controller would need to know... @contact_event.type = (params[:email]) # get the type based on what was passed in? @contact_event.event_id = (params[:email]) #get the id for the correct class, in this case Email.id Just not sure how this works....

    In the _form for creating a new Contact, I want to be able to create a drop-down which allows the User to select the Campaign the Contact will belong to. In the controller, I created a collection called @campaigns.     I have created a polymorphic association around a model called status. Some contacts will have a status associated with it. Many won't. If I try to call a status when one is not there, I get an error. Right now, even if I haven't created a status for the model, it still runs whatever is in the if-end block.   • How do I do a count on that meet a specific condition, dependent on several has_many relationships i

    I have a Model Campaign. A Campaign has many Events. Each Event has an attribute :days. A Campaign also has_many Contacts. Each Contact as a :date_entered attribute. The from_today(contact,event) method returns a number, which is the number of days from the contact's :date_entered till today minus the event's :days. In other words, a positive number shows the number of days from today till the :days of the event is elapsed. If it is negative, if means that the number of days that has elapsed since the :date_entered is greater than the :days attribute of an event. In other words, the event is overdue. What I would like to be able to do is do campaign.overdue and this would result in a total number of contacts that have an overdue event. It shouldn't count multiple events for a single contact, just one contact. How do I do that? It seems like I would need to cycle through all the events for every contact and keep a counter but I'm assuming that there is a better way.

    I am trying to read a file that has been saved on the /system folder using Paperclip, for example. But when I use that .url method from Paperclip to read that file using File.new, I get that the file isn't found. The directory is correct, but I still can't access it. What is the right way to find a file for File.new for example? I tried to point to other files, as well, and to no avail.

    Hi, not sure if this is the best forum or if there's someplace better...but I need to write a script/macro for Open Office. I am sending a letter to 4-6 different people (A,B,C,D). The format for, say, four people would be: Dear A, I'm writing to B,C, and D. Dear B, I am writing to A,C, and D. etc. Sometimes it may be 4. Sometimes 6. Sometimes 10. But it needs to cycle through all and do so listing the ones not in the "dear" header.

    I want to create a real time-series array. Currently, I am using the statistics gem to pull out values for each 'day': define_statistic :sent_count, :count => :all, :group => 'DATE(date_sent)', :filter_on => {:email_id => 'email_id > = ?'}, :order => 'DATE(date_sent) ASC' What this does is create an array where there are values for a date, for example [["12-20-2010",1], ["12-24-2010",3]] But I need it to fill in the null values, so it looks more like: [["12-20-2010",1], ["12-21-2010",0], ["12-22-2010",0], ["12-23-2010",0], ["12-24-2010",3]] Notice how the second example has "0" values for the days that were missing from the first array.

    Quite possibly there could be a rails magic I've missed, but I'm guessing it will be in Ruby. I have a model called Company which has_many Contacts. Suppose Company has Contact 1, Contact 2, Contact 3, and Contact 4. When I create a textblog for each Contact, I want to output the following (where Contact = Contact 1) "Hi, Contact 1, I am also writing to Contact 2, Contact 3, and Contact 4." So it needs to extract the Contact in the salutation and then list them, inserting "and" before the last Contact in the list.

    I have a model called Company which is acts_as_taggable_on. When I am /SHOWing a Company (e.g. company/15) I want to be able to see a form that allows me to add tags. I suppose this would be easier by just allowing at edit but sometimes I want to go back and just add tags.
