  • Converting Oracle date arithmetic to work in HSQLDB

    I'm trying to spot-test an Oracle backed database with hsqldb and dbunit, but I've run into a snag. The problem is with the following EJB-QL (simplified a bit): SELECT o FROM Offer o WHERE :nowTime BETWEEN o.startDate AND o.startDate + 7 This seems to only work in Oracle's version of SQL. What's the easiest way for me to convert this to work in both hsqldb and oracle? Assume that changing the two between arguments to named parameters is a very difficult refactor, so I'm going to favor answers that provides a more standardized analog to o.startdate + 7 EDIT: After doing some more research, it looks like Oracle converts the above snippet to o.startdate + INTERVAL '7' DAY which is apparently more standard, but doesn't work in HSQLDB.

  • Doing 64 bit manipulation using 32 bit data in Fixed point arithmetic using C.

    Hi, I am stuck with a problem. I am working on a hardware which only does support 32 bit operations. sizeof(int64_t) is 4. Sizeof(int) is 4. and I am porting an application which assumes size of int64_t to be 8 bytes. The problem is it has this macro BIG_MULL(a,b) ( (int64_t)(a) * (int64_t)(b) 23) The result is always a 32 bit integer but since my system doesn't support 64 bit operation, it always return me the LSB of the operation, rounding of all the results making my system crash.     Problem String concatenation is slowing down a query: date(extract(YEAR FROM m.taken)||'-1-1') d1, date(extract(YEAR FROM m.taken)||'-1-31') d2 This is realized in code as part of a string, which follows (where the p_ variables are integers): date(extract(YEAR FROM m.taken)||''-'||p_month1||'-'||p_day1||''') d1, date(extract(YEAR FROM m.taken)||''-'||p_month2||'-'||p_day2||''') d2 This part of the query runs in 3.2 seconds with the dates, and 1.5 seconds without, leading me to believe there is ample room for improvement. Question What is a better way to create the date (presumably without concatenation)? Many thanks!

  • C# Expression Tree Simple Arithmetic

    Hello, I've been trying to figure out how to achieve some simple maths using the Expression class. What I'm trying to do is this (1 + 10 * 15) When I try to do this via Expression.Add and Expression.Constant but the result I get is this ((1 + 10) * 15) Which is not right as it evaluates the 1 + 10 first instead of 10 * 15. Is there a way to combine Expression.Add/Multiply etc.. without it creating the brackets? I assume there is but I just can't find where or how! The test code I have is this var v1 = Expression.Constant(1, typeof(int)); var v2 = Expression.Constant(10, typeof(int)); var v3 = Expression.Constant(15, typeof(int)); var a1 = Expression.Add(v1, v2); var m2 = Expression.Multiply(a1, v3); Thanks for your time, Richard.

Is there a way to determine what element index in the array pInt is 'pointing' to without walking the array again?

    I have a form for my customers to add budget projections. A prominent user wants to be able to show dollar values in either dollars, Kila-dollars or Mega-dollars. I'm trying to achieve this with a group of radio buttons that call the following JavaScript function, but am having problems with rounding that make the results look pretty crummy.   • Floating Point Arithmetic - Modulo Operator on Double Type

    So I'm trying to figure out why the modulo operator is returning such a large unusual value. If I have the code: double result = 1.0d % 0.1d; it will give a result of 0.09999999999999995. I would expect a value of 0 Note this problem doesn't exist using the dividing operator - double result = 1.0d / 0.1d; will give a result of 10.0, meaning that the remainder should be 0. Let me be clear: I'm not surprised that an error exists, I'm surprised that the error is so darn large compared to the numbers at play. 0.0999 ~= 0.1 and 0.1 is on the same order of magnitude as 0.1d and only one order of magnitude away from 1.0d. Its not like you can compare it to a double.epsilon, or say "its equal if its < 0.00001 difference". I've read up on this topic on StackOverflow, in the following posts one two three, amongst others. Can anyone suggest explain why this error is so large? Any any suggestions to avoid running into the problems in the future (I know I could use decimal instead but I'm concerned about the performance of that).

  • Generate a list of file names based on month and year arithmetic

    How can I list the numbers 01 to 12 (one for each of the 12 months) in such a way so that the current month always comes last where the oldest one is first. In other words, if the number is grater than the current month, it's from the previous year. e.g. 02 is Feb, 2011 (the current month right now), 03 is March, 2010 and 09 is Sep, 2010 but 01 is Jan, 2011. In this case, I'd like to have [09, 03, 01, 02].   • Keeping sync in multiplayer RTS game that uses floating point arithmetic

    I'm writing a 2D space RTS game in C#. Single player works. Now I want to add some multiplayer functionality. I googled for it and it seems there is only one way to have thousands of units continuously moving without a powerful net connection: send only the commands through the network while running the same simulation at every player. And now there is a problem the entire engine uses doubles everywhere. And floating point calculations are depends heavily on compiler optimalizations and cpu architecture so it is very hard to keep things syncronized. And it is not grid based at all, and have a simple phisics engine to move the space-ships (space ships have impulse and angular-momentum...). So recoding the entire stuff to use fixed point would be quite cumbersome (but probably the only solution). So I have 2 options so far: Say bye to the current code and restart from scratch using integers Make the game LAN only where there is enough bandwidth to have 8 players with thousands of units and sending the positions and orientation etc in (almost) every frame... So I looking for better opinions, (or even tips on migrating the code to fixed-point without messing everything up...)

My constructor throws this error array.cpp:40:35: error: invalid conversion from ‘int*’ to ‘int’ [-fpermissive] When my array initializes I want it to free up all the spaces in the array for ints.     HI, I am trying to use the robust predicates for computational geometry from Jonathan Richard Shewchuk. I am not a programmer, so I am not even sure of what I am saying, I may be doing some basic mistake. The point is the predicates should allow for precise aritmthetic with adaptive floating point precision. On my computer: Asus pro31/S (Core Due Centrino Processor) they do not work. The problem may stay in the fact the my computer may use some improvements in the floating point precision taht conflicts with the one used by Shewchuk. The author says: /* On some machines, the exact arithmetic routines might be defeated by the / / use of internal extended precision floating-point registers. Sometimes / / this problem can be fixed by defining certain values to be volatile, / / thus forcing them to be stored to memory and rounded off. This isn't / / a great solution, though, as it slows the arithmetic down. */ Now what I would like to know is that there is a way, maybe some compiler option, to turn off the internal extended precision floating-point registers.     I'm a little freaked out by the results I'm getting when I do modulo arithmetic in Objective-C. -1 % 3 is coming out to be -1, which isn't the right answer: according to my understanding, it should be 2. -2 % 3 is coming out to -2, which also isn't right: it should be 1. Is there another method I should be using besides the % operator to get the correct result?

I'd like to keep memory down, hoever, using casts everywhere just to perform simple arithmetic is getting annoying. short a = 1; short result = a + 1; // Error short result = (short)(a + 1); // works but looks ugly when does lots of times What would be better for overall application performance?

    Hi, I am trying to find the easiest way to add, subtract a scalar value with a opencv 2.0 cv::Mat class. Most of the existing function allows only matrix-matrix and matrix-scalar operations. I am looking for a scalar-matrix operations. I am doing it currently by creating a temporary matrix with the same scalar value and doing required arithmetic operation. Example below.. Mat M(Size(100,100), CV_8U); Mat temp = Mat::ones(100, 100, CV_8U)*255; M = temp-M; But I think there should be better/easier ways to do it. Any suggestions ?

    Today I found the following: #include <stdio.h> int main(){ char x = 255; int z = ((int)x)*2; printf("%d\n", z); //prints -2 return 0; } So basically I'm getting an overflow because the size limit is determined by the operands on the right side of the = sign?? Why doesn't casting it to int before multiplying work? In this case I'm using a char and int, but if I use "long" and "long long int" (c99), then I get similar behaviour. Is it generally advised against doing arithmetic with operands of different sizes?

  • Is there a calculator with LaTeX-syntax?

    When I write math in LaTeX I often need to perform simple arithmetic on numbers in my LaTeX source, like 515.1544 + 454 = ???. I usually copy-paste the LaTeX code into Google to get the result, but I still have to manually change the syntax, e.g. \frac{154,7}{25} - (289 - \frac{1337}{42}) must be changed to 154,7/25 - (289 - 1337/42) It seems trivial to write a program to do this for the most commonly used operations. Is there a calculator which understand this syntax? EDIT: I know that doing this perfectly is impossible (because of the halting problem). Doing it for the simple cases I need is trivial. \frac, \cdot, \sqrt and a few other tags would do the trick. The program could just return an error for cases it does not understand.
