• R: Cut and labels/breaks length conflict

  I am working with the cut function to prep data for a barplot histogram but keep running into a seeming inconsistency between my labels and breaks: Error in cut.default(sample(1:1e+05, 500, T), breaks = sq, labels = sprintf("$%.0f", : labels/breaks length conflict Here is an example. I pretend that it is income data, using a sequence of 0 to $100,000 in bins of $10,000. I use the same variable to generate both breaks and labels, with minor formating on the label side.   I don't quite understand how to control y - axis when using plt.hist plot in python. I read my .txt data file - it contains 10 columns with various data. If I want to plot distribution of strain on x axis I take column n.5. But what kind of value appears on y axis ??? • Which opensource license to use to retain commercial rights for myself.

  I am starting an opensource project. I want to allow the following: Free for noncommercial use, bins and source mods, like with the GPL, but I would like to retain commercial rights for myself, and provide another license for commercial use for customers who prefer that option. The number of licensing options seem a bit overwhelming. So my question is: Which opensource license should I use? Which commercial license should I use, if there are any standard ones available? Or should I come up with my own one here?

• Space partitioning when everything is moving

  Background Together with a friend I'm working on a 2D game that is set in space. To make it as immersive and interactive as possible we want there to be thousands of objects freely floating around, some clustered together, others adrift in empty space. Challenge To unburden the rendering and physics engine we need to implement some sort of spatial partitioning. There are two challenges we have to overcome. The first challenge is that everything is moving so reconstructing/updating the data structure has to be extremely cheap since it will have to be done every frame. The second challenge is the distribution of objects, as said before there might be clusters of objects together and vast bits of empty space and to make it even worse there is no boundary to space. Existing technologies I've looked at existing techniques like BSP-Trees, QuadTrees, kd-Trees and even R-Trees but as far as I can tell these data structures aren't a perfect fit since updating a lot of objects that have moved to other cells is relatively expensive. What I've tried I made the decision that I need a data structure that is more geared toward rapid insertion/update than on giving back the least amount of possible hits given a query. For that purpose I made the cells implicit so each object, given it's position, can calculate in which cell(s) it should be. Then I use a HashMap that maps cell-coordinates to an ArrayList (the contents of the cell). This works fairly well since there is no memory lost on 'empty' cells and its easy to calculate which cells to inspect. However creating all those ArrayLists (worst case N) is expensive and so is growing the HashMap a lot of times (although that is slightly mitigated by giving it a large initial capacity). Problem OK so this works but still isn't very fast. Now I can try to micro-optimize the JAVA code. However I'm not expecting too much of that since the profiler tells me that most time is spent in creating all those objects that I use to store the cells. I'm hoping that there are some other tricks/algorithms out there that make this a lot faster so here is what my ideal data structure looks like: The number one priority is fast updating/reconstructing of the entire data structure Its less important to finely divide the objects into equally sized bins, we can draw a few extra objects and do a few extra collision checks if that means that updating is a little bit faster Memory is not really important (PC game)

• Firebird 2.5 Database Corrupt

  We have an issue where a database hangs the server when: a backup is performed (Hangs on a specific table) selecting * or count(1) from a specific table or viewing data that is related to the table (FKs, etc) We could browse the table to a certain point (using IBExpert) however after about 2900 records the machine just spikes and hangs. Performing a gfix -m does not work, and the validation reports back Record level errors = 4 (no matter how many times we run gfix -m, -v, etc. The Firebird.log file reports back these types of messages: Relation has 91631 orphan backversions (9214273 in use) in table BINS (137) - {Which is apparently just a warning} Unable to complete network request to host "MHPLZA1". Error reading data from the connection. INET/inet_error: read errno = 10054 SERVER/process_packet: broken port, server exiting Shutting down the server with 1 active connection(s) to 1 database(s), 0 active service(s) - {If we leave the backup to run while hanging, it eventually logs this error message} The setup is: The table is question has about 7000 records. The Firebird version is 2.5 Classic Server x64 install. The OS is Windows Server 2008. This is a virtual machine (VMWare) running on a massive server. (Does anyone have issues with VMs and Firebird?). We have the same setup running fine on other servers (However they are not virtual machines). Is there anyway to pin point the issue and or the cause?

  Might be a really easy problem to fix, but it the solution is eluding me! I'm using Fluent NHibernate 1.0 RTM (and using NHibernate bins that ships with it). I'm trying to map my entities and cannot use the WithTable() method. It's not available in Intelligence and VS doesn't suggest any namespaces to reference. • Changing font size of legend title in Python pylab rose/polar plot

  I'm trying to change the font size of the title of an existing legend on a rose, or 'polar', plot. Most of the code was written by somebody else, who is away. I've added:- ax.legend(title=legend_title) setp(l.get_title(), fontsize=8) to add the title 'legend_title', which is a variable that the user enters a string for in a a different function that uses this code. The second line of this doesn't return an error but doesn't appear to do anything either. The complete code is below. 'Rose' and 'RoseAxes' are modules/functions written by somebody. Does anyone know of a way to change the legend title font size? • How to draw line inside a scatter plot

  I can't believe that this is so complicated but I tried and googled for a while now. I just want to analyse my scatter plot with a few graphical features. For starters, I want to add simply a line. And frankly, the documentation-examples-gallery combo and content of matplotlib is a bad source for information. • C malloc assertion help

  I am implementing a divide and conquer polynomial algorithm so i can bench it against an opencl implementation, but i can't seem to get malloc to work. When I run the program it allocates a bunch of stuff, checks some things, then sends the size/2 to the algorithm. Then when I hit the malloc line again it spits out this: malloc.c:3096: sYSMALLOc: Assertion `(old_top == (((mbinptr) (((char *) &((av)-bins[((1) - 1) * 2])) - __builtin_offsetof (struct malloc_chunk, fd)))) && old_size == 0) || ((unsigned long) (old_size) = (unsigned long)((((__builtin_offsetof (struct malloc_chunk, fd_nextsize))+((2 * (sizeof(size_t))) - 1)) & ~((2 * (sizeof(size_t))) - 1))) && ((old_top)-size & 0x1) && ((unsigned long)old_end & pagemask) == 0)' failed. Aborted The line in question is: int *out, .....other vars....; out = (int *)malloc(sizeof(int) * size * 2); I have checked size with fprintf and it is a positive int (usually 50 at that point). I have tried calling malloc with a plain number as well and i still get the error. I'm just stumped at what's going on, and nothing from google that I have found so far has been too helpful. Any ideas what's going on? I'm trying to figure out how to compile a newer GCC in case it's a compiler error, but i really doubt it.

• How to hide zero values in bar3 plot in MATLAB

  I've got a 2-D histogram (the plot is 3D - several histograms graphed side by side) that I've generated with the bar3 plot command. However, all the zero values show up as flat squares in the x-y plane. Is there a way I can prevent MATLAB from displaying the values? I already tried replacing all zeros with NaNs, but it didn't change anything about the plot. • Radix Sort in Python [on hold]

  I could use some help. How would you write a program in python that implements a radix sort? Here is some info: A radix sort for base 10 integers is a based on sorting punch cards, but it turns out the sort is very ecient. The sort utilizes a main bin and 10 digit bins. Each bin acts like a queue and maintains its values in the order they arrive. The algorithm begins by placing each number in the main bin. Then it considers the ones digit for each value. The rst value is removed and placed in the digit bin corresponding to the ones digit. For example, 534 is placed in digit bin 4 and 662 is placed in the digit bin 2. Once all the values in the main bin are placed in the corresponding digit bin for ones, the values are collected from bin 0 to bin 9 (in that order) and placed back in the main bin. The process continues with the tens digit, the hundreds, and so on. After the last digit is processed, the main bin contains the values in order. Use randint, found in random, to create random integers from 1 to 100000. Use a list comphrension to create a list of varying sizes (10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc.). To use indexing to access the digits rst convert the integer to a string. For this sort to work, all numbers must have the same number of digits. To zero pad integers with leading zeros, use the string method str.zfill(). Once main bin is sorted, convert the strings back to integers. I'm not sure how to start this, Any help is appreciated. • categorize a set of phrases into a set of similar phrases

  I have a few apps that generate textual tracing information (logs) to log files. The tracing information is the typical printf() style - i.e. there are a lot of log entries that are similar (same format argument to printf), but differ where the format string had parameters. What would be an algorithm (url, books, articles, ...) that will allow me to analyze the log entries and categorize them into several bins/containers, where each bin has one associated format? Essentially, what I would like is to transform the raw log entries into (formatA, arg0 ... argN) instances, where formatA is shared among many log entries. The formatA does not have to be the exact format used to generate the entry (even more so if this makes the algo simpler). Most of the literature and web-info I found deals with exact matching, a max substring matching, or a k-difference (with k known/fixed ahead of time). Also, it focuses on matching a pair of (long) strings, or a single bin output (one match among all input). My case is somewhat different, since I have to discover what represents a (good-enough) match (generally a sequence of discontinuous strings), and then categorize each input entries to one of the discovered matches. Lastly, I'm not looking for a perfect algorithm, but something simple/easy to maintain. Thanks!

• DSP - Filtering frequencies using DFT

  I'm trying to implement a DFT-based 8-band equalizer for the sole purpose of learning. To prove that my DFT implementation works I fed an audio signal, analyzed it and then resynthesized it again with no modifications made to the frequency spectrum. So far so good. I'm using the so-called 'standard way of calculating the DFT' which is by correlation. This method calculates the real and imaginary parts both N/2 + 1 samples in length. To attenuate a frequency I'm just doing: float atnFactor = 0.6; Re[k] *= atnFactor; Im[k] *= atnFactor; where 'k' is an index in the range 0 to N/2, but what I get after resynthesis is a slighty distorted signal, especially at low frequencies. The input signal sample rate is 44.1 khz and since I just want a 8-band equalizer I'm feeding the DFT 16 samples at a time so I have 8 frequency bins to play with. Can someone show me what I'm doing wrong? I tried to find info on this subject on the internet but couldn't find any. Thanks in advance.

  I have a WPF ItemsControl with a Canvas ItemPanel. Drawing from an internal source, it displays lots of automatically generated Rectangles. As of now, it looks like this: <Window // .. The error message is "Cannot explicitly modify Children collection of Panel used as ItemsPanel for ItemsControl. ItemsControl generates child elements for Panel." What is the preferred way to implement such behavior? I thought about overlaying another canvas (using negative Margin) and drawing the selection box in there, but that seems like a bad hack. • Statistical analysis on large data set to be published on the web

  I have a non-computer related data logger, that collects data from the field. This data is stored as text files, and I manually lump the files together and organize them. The current format is through a csv file per year per logger. Each file is around 4,000,000 lines x 7 loggers x 5 years = a lot of data. some of the data is organized as bins item_type, item_class, item_dimension_class, and other data is more unique, such as item_weight, item_color, date_collected, and so on ... Currently, I do statistical analysis on the data using a python/numpy/matplotlib program I wrote. It works fine, but the problem is, I'm the only one who can use it, since it and the data live on my computer. I'd like to publish the data on the web using a postgres db; however, I need to find or implement a statistical tool that'll take a large postgres table, and return statistical results within an adequate time frame. I'm not familiar with python for the web; however, I'm proficient with PHP on the web side, and python on the offline side. users should be allowed to create their own histograms, data analysis. For example, a user can search for all items that are blue shipped between week x and week y, while another user can search for sort the weight distribution of all items by hour for all year long. I was thinking of creating and indexing my own statistical tools, or automate the process somehow to emulate most queries. This seemed inefficient. I'm looking forward to hearing your ideas Thanks

• Choropleth mapping issue in R

  I am trying to follow the tutorial described here: http://www.thisisthegreenroom.com/2009/choropleths-in-r/ The below code executes, but it is either not matching my dataset with the maps_counties data properly, or it isn't plotting it in the order I would expect. For example, the resulting areas for the greater NYC area show no density while random counties in PA show the highest density. The general format of my data table is: county state count fairfield connecticut 17 hartford connecticut 6 litchfield connecticut 3 new haven connecticut 12 ... ... westchester new york 70 yates new york 1 luzerne pennsylvania 1 Note this data is in order by state and then county and includes data for CT, NJ, NY, & PA. • Modeling distribution of performance measurements

  How would you mathematically model the distribution of repeated real life performance measurements - "Real life" meaning you are not just looping over the code in question, but it is just a short snippet within a large application running in a typical user scenario? My experience shows that you usually have a peak around the average execution time that can be modeled adequately with a Gaussian distribution. In addition, there's a "long tail" containing outliers - often with a multiple of the average time. (The behavior is understandable considering the factors contributing to first execution penalty). My goal is to model aggregate values that reasonably reflect this, and can be calculated from aggregate values (like for the Gaussian, calculate mu and sigma from N, sum of values and sum of squares). In other terms, number of repetitions is unlimited, but memory and calculation requirements should be minimized. A normal Gaussian distribution can't model the long tail appropriately and will have the average biased strongly even by a very small percentage of outliers. I am looking for ideas, especially if this has been attempted/analysed before. I've checked various distributions models, and I think I could work out something, but my statistics is rusty and I might end up with an overblown solution. Oh, a complete shrink-wrapped solution would be fine, too ;) Other aspects / ideas: Sometimes you get "two humps" distributions, which would be acceptable in my scenario with a single mu/sigma covering both, but ideally would be identified separately. Extrapolating this, another approach would be a "floating probability density calculation" that uses only a limited buffer and adjusts automatically to the range (due to the long tail, bins may not be spaced evenly) - haven't found anything, but with some assumptions about the distribution it should be possible in principle. Why (since it was asked) - For a complex process we need to make guarantees such as "only 0.1% of runs exceed a limit of 3 seconds, and the average processing time is 2.8 seconds". The performance of an isolated piece of code can be very different from a normal run-time environment involving varying levels of disk and network access, background services, scheduled events that occur within a day, etc. This can be solved trivially by accumulating all data. However, to accumulate this data in production, the data produced needs to be limited. For analysis of isolated pieces of code, a gaussian deviation plus first run penalty is ok. That doesn't work anymore for the distributions found above. [edit] I've already got very good answers (and finally - maybe - some time to work on this).   I have a heap allocation error that I cant spot in my code that is picked up on vanguard/gdb on Linux but runs perfectly on a Windows cygwin environment. I understand that Linux could be tighter with its heap allocation than Windows but I would really like to have a response that discovers the issue/possible fix. I'm also aware that I shouldn't typecast malloc in C but it's a force of habit and doesn't change my problem from happening.
