  • How I can view and block specific applications temporarily from accessing Internet?

    I don't want to block any application permanently from accessing internet. I just want to block some specific applications for a particular time period to gain speed in running some other. I know about one such great tool - that is "Comodo firewall". It can smoothly block and accurately display apps accessing internet. The only problem of installing this is, Windows recommends only one firewall apps and as Im running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate there will be complications if I install this one. I need a tool which can accurately display which apps are accessing internet (through which port) and how much data they are receiving or sending. I also need some arrangement within the app so that I can easily temporarily block that app from accessing internet.

  • How to diagnose usb issue

    Hey, So my kern.log and syslog files filled up with tons of the below messages: [514971.000109] phy0 - rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x07 failed for offset 0x30c4 with error -108. I was curious as to the steps to take, commands to run, places to look to help diagnose this issue (and curious as to what caused it)? I'm guessing it's something usb elated. I had some issues with my printer earlier today so this might be related. Thanks, Alex

  • Interviewing Process (using blank paper etc)

    I am curious to know why do companies hand you a blank paper and ask you to write code? This confuses me, because these days intellisense, google, stackoverflow etc are common sources to look up syntax and / or IDE gives you a colored indicator if your syntax is wrong. I usually get stressed out during these situations. I am curious to know opinions of other developers. I am posting this on this forum, hoping to get helpful feedback from other experienced developers.

  • How do you enable wobbly windows in ubuntu 11.04 without using compiz?

    I'm curious if there's a way to enable the more fun UI features in Ubuntu 11.04 that were available in previous versions. The effects I'm most curious about is the wobbly windows and the alt tab program switcher that looked like a rolodex. Those things were delightful. I've been reading about the compiz tool and since I'm a pretty noob user, I don't think I want to risk destroying my desktop for a chance to get these effects back. Any help would be appreciated.     Just tapping away and automatically made use of that one logic algorithm I always use, which you'll probably guess is: (not A) OR (not B) = not (A AND B) Curious if this is the case for just about everyone else, and more curious if there is a different algorithm that other programmers make use of that is just as if not more useful to them.     My office is about has proposed implementing some extremely strict (I would consider them draconian) policies regarding programmers, and our access due to security concerns (note, we have never had a security breach). While I can theoretically get used to them, I'd like to ask about what is considered good security policy for programmers, specifically in the area of access policies, and what is too much? Any answers to this question are greatly appreciated as they directly relate to my ability to write code, and I can't find anything so far on Google. Edit: Most of the security policies that concern me are about access to my machine and to the code. According to these proposed policies, I'd need management approval to access either, which means that I'd be forced to get management to unlock my computer anytime I leave my desk as my computer is always locked when I'm not at my desk.

  • transforming 1d (1column) into 5d(5column) matrix through copy paste or other

    Ex. I want to take the column with 12345..... and order 5 columns across as seen. next 5 numbers in column will be next row. However my code creates a 4 row gap in between each successive row. I dont know what additional logic (possibly if then statement) I can embed into do loop to may make it cleaner.     I'm trying to solve this newbie puzzle: I've created this function: def bucket_loop(htable, key): bucket = hashtable_get_bucket(htable, key) for entry in bucket: if entry[0] == key: return entry[1] else: return None And I have to call it in two other functions (bellow) in the following way: to change the value of the element entry[1] or to append to this list (entry) a new element. But I can't do that calling the function bucket_loop the way I did because "you can't assign to function call" (assigning to a function call is illegal in Python).     I would like to iterate a calculation over a column of values in a MySQL database. I wondered if Django had any built-in functionality for doing this.   • javascript ul button dropdown crashes after if doing more than 1 button

    So i have a button drop down list that i want users to select a choice, and basically the button will return the users selection.Pretty straight forward, tested on jsFiddle and works great. Using ruby on rails btw, so i'm not sure if it might conflicting the way rails handle javascript actions. But the moment I select the same button/or new button, the page immediately kind of refreshes, they selected value will not show up after the list drops down and user selects a value. I viewed the page source and added additional javascript src and types, but still doesnt work. the jquery code: jQuery(function ($) { $('.input-group-btn .dropdown-menu > li:not(.divider)').click(function(){ $(this).closest('ul').prev().text($(this).text()) }) }); Any suggestions what is causing the problem??   • TCP/IP performance tuning under KVM/Qemu

    With more and more companies switching to public cloud services, I'm curious what you guys' thoughts are on TCP/IP tuning in the cloud. Is it worth bothering with? Given that you don't have access to the host-server, you're somewhat limited I presume Let's say for the sake of the argument that you're running three MongoDB-servers in a replica-set on FreeBSD or Linux that all sync over an internal network. I'd also be curious if anyone made any actual performance benchmarks to back up their arguments. I benchmarked the various network drivers available for KVM/Qemu here, but I'm curious what the gurus here suggest to tune further. I started playing around a bit with the tuning-recommendations as suggested over here, but interestingly enough I saw a decrease in performance, rather than an increase, but perhaps I didn't fully understand the tweaks. Update: I did a few more benchmarks and posted the result here. Unfortunately the result wasn't really what I expected.

  • Error compiling PHP 5.5.9 on CentOS 6.5 during make command

See <file:///usr/share/doc/gcc-4.6/README.Bugs> for instructions. make: *** [ext/fileinfo/libmagic/apprentice.lo] Error 1 The very last thing make was processing is apprentice.lo which appears to be part of the image manipulation libraries (maybe?). I am using Ansible to provision my instance. It is a Digital Ocean single core 512MB VM. I have been using vagrant / ansible with the same config locally for dev and it has compiled fine, this is the first cloud VM I am attempting to provision. The only difference is the base image for my DO server is coming from DO and for my local dev, I built my own Vagrant box via VirtualBox from a stock CentOS basic server install. I pull it down from my DropBox.     I am curious if windows print servers can keep a count of the printed pages sent to it? Can an individual PC (WinXP+)? Is there some secret command you can send it (with telnet, dos, etc)? I searched & couldn't find any questions similar to this here so lets keep this open-ended for future people who are curious. Is this more suited towards server fault? Maybe, but this is more about printers & local PC's have print servers now-a-days.   • Oracle: '= ANY()' vs. 'IN ()'

    Hi all, I just stumbled upon something in ORACLE SQL (not sure if it's in others), that I am curious about. I am asking here as a wiki, since it's hard to try to search symbols in google... I just found that when checking a value against a set of values you can do WHERE x = ANY (a, b, c) As opposed to the usual WHERE x IN (a, b, c) So I'm curious, what is the reasoning for these two syntaxes? Is one standard and one some oddball Oracle syntax? Or are they both standard? And is there a preference of one over the other for performance reasons, or ? Just curious what anyone can tell me about that '= ANY' syntax. CheerZ!
