  I read the transcript of a speech by Richard Hamming included as a part of this SO question and the speech had a quote that got me thinking about when someone should move into development. When your vision of what you want to do is what you can do single-handedly, then you should pursue it. The day your vision, what you think needs to be done, is bigger than what you can do single-handedly, then you have to move toward management. And the bigger the vision is, the farther in management you have to go. Any other suggestions as to how you can decide if you want to move away from the coal face and into management?

• A standard set of questions to ask an interviewer?

  We have had many questions for interviewers to ask interviewees. But none addressing information flow in the other direction, interviewee to interviewer. Just an indirect question about "deal breakers" and one about "finding dream jobs". What I'm after is when you're interviewing at a company do you have a set of questions that you like to ask to help get a feel for the company and the work environment? I have a series of questions that I like to ask that range from the development environment to testing techniques to how the team get on together. Anything else you'd like to ask? • How to decouple an app's agile development from a database using BDUF?

  G'day, I was reading the article "Database as a Fortress" by Dan Chak from the excellent book "97 Things Every Software Architect Should Know" (sanitised Amazon link) which suggests that databases should not be designed using an agile approach. There's an SO question on agile approaches and databases "Agile development and database changes" which has some excellent answers covering agile development approaches. In fact, one of the answers supplies a brilliant idea of what's needed for each update of the DB. ;-) But after reading Dan Chak's article, I am left wondering if an agile approach is really suitable for large scale systems. This of course leads on to the question of how best to decouple an agile approach for the application that is interacting with the BDUF database design without adding complicated translation layers in the final design employed?   Yes, this is another Pivot question... I've read through nearly all the previous questions and I can't seem to hack together a query that does what I need. Here is what my table looks like: FirmName Account Balance Pmt Revolving Installment Mortgage Amex 12345 10000 2000 1 0 0 Discover 54321 20000 4000 1 0 0 Chase 13579 100000 1500 0 0 1 Wells Fargo 2468 40000 900 0 1 0 The last three bit columns (Revolving, Installment, & Mortgage) dictate how the columns should be rolled up into a type. Each result requires three columns based on the type and its row count. The outcome should be one row with many columns. • How to extract ALL typedefs and structs and unions from c++ source

  I have inherited a Visual Studio project that contains hundreds of files. I would like to extract all the typedefs, structs and unions from each .h/.cpp file and put the results in a file). Each typdef/struct/union should be on one line in the results file. This would make sorting much easier. typdef int myType; struct myFirstStruct { char a; int b;...}; union Part_Number_Serial_Number_Part_2_Response_Message_Type {struct{Message_Response_Head_Type Head; Part_Num_Serial_Num_Part_2_Report_Array Part_2_Report; Message_Tail_Type Tail;} Data; BYTE byData[140];}myUnion; struct { bool c; int d;...}mySecondStruct; My problem is, I do not know what to look for (grammar of typedef/structs/unions) using a regular expression. I cannot believe that nobody has done this before (I googled and have not found anything on this). Does anyone know the regular expressions for these? (Note some are commented out using // others /* */) Or a tool to accomplish this. Edit: I am toying with the idea of autogenerating source code and/or dialogs for modifying messages that use the underlying typedef/struct/union. I was going to use the output to generate an XML file that could be used for this reason. The source for these are in C/C++ and used in almost all my projects. These projects are usually NOT in C/C++. By using the XML version I would only need to update/add the typedef/struct/union only in one place and all the projects would be able to autogen the source and/or dialogs.

• postgres subquery w/ derived column

  The following query won't work, but it should be clear what I'm trying to do: split the value of 't' on space and use the last element in that array in the subquery (as it will match tl). Any ideas how to do this? Thanks! • Thread-safe equivalent to python's time.strptime() ?

  Something I wrote throws a lot of AttributeErrors when using time.strptime() inside a thread. This only seems to happen on Windows (not on Linux), but whatever…. Upon a'Googling, it seems that time.strptime() isn't considered thread-safe. Is there a better way to create a datetime object from a string? Current code looks like: val = DateFromTicks(mktime(strptime(val, '%B %d, %Y'))) But, that yields the AttributeErrors as its run inside a thread. Thanks!

• Replacing whitespace with sed in a CSV (to use w/ postgres copy command)

  I iterate through a collection of CSV files in bash, running: iconv --from-code=ISO-8859-1 --to-code=UTF-8 ${FILE} | \ sed -e 's/\"//g' | \ sed -e 's/, /,/g' \ > ${FILE}.utf8 Running iconv to fix UTF-8 characters, then the first sed call removes the double quote characters, and the final sed call is supposed to remove leading and trailing whitespace around the commas. HOWEVER, I still have a line like this in the saved file: FALSE,,,, 2.40,, The COPY command in postgres is kind of dumb, so it thinks " 2.40" is not valid syntax for a numeric value. Where am I going wrong w/ my processing of the CSV file? Thanks!

• jQuery infinite loop w/ tablesorter

  Got myself in a funny situation: page has three tables. Using sortEnd, any time you sort one table, it sorts the other three. However, since I bound sortEnd to the function that does the sorting, you get a infinite loop of sorting/resorting. • How to ask questions to an obstructionist?

  This is not related to my other recently posted question about "working with a star developer". In a similar vein, how do you work with someone who will only answer the specific question that you ask. I worked with someone who, when you asked a question on a specific aspect of the system, would give you the answer just related to the specific bit you'd asked about. For example, when processing radar messages I'd ask about an aspect of message number RJ546 and he would answer just about that specific part of RJ546. He wouldn't mention anything about the other freaky parts of the message, or mention any related aspects of the other messages. Then you'd go off and work on the processing and all of a sudden all this other freakiness would pop up. What's a good technique when working with this type of person? BTW I later found out that the person who I'd come in to replace had quit because he got sick and tired of having these surprises pop up due to the lack of information provided by this person. Edit: I forgot to add that the person was deliberately obstructionist and believed that job security came from hoarded knowledge not being disseminated.

  G'day, How do you work with someone when they haven't been able to see that there is a range of other languages out there beyond "The One True Path"? I mean someone who hasn't grown up to realise that the modern software professional has a range of tools in his toolbox. Someone who has a well-equipped toolbox and then selects the best tool for the job at hand. The person who's knee jerk reaction is, for example, "We must do this is C++!" "Everything must be done in C++!" What's the best approach for these people? How do you open them up to the fact that "not everything is a nail." cheers,

• Building my first Javascript Application (jQuery), struggling on something

  I'd really appreciate recommendations on the most efficient way to approach this. I'm building a simple javascript application which displays a list of records and allows the user to edit a record by clicking an "Edit" link in the records row. The user also can click the "Add" link to pop open a dialog allowing them to add a new record. Here's a working prototype of this: http://jsfiddle.net/FfRcG/ You'll note if you click "Edit" a dialog pops up with some canned values. And, if you click "Add", a dialog pops up with empty values. I need help on how to approach two problems I believe we need to pass our index to our edit dialog and reference the values within the JSON, but I am unsure how to pass the index when the user clicks edit. It bothers me that the Edit and Add div contents are so similiar (Edit just pre populates the values). I feel like there is a more efficient way of doing this but am at a loss. • Dismiss android preferences dialog on Keyboard ACTION_DONE press

  I would like to be able to close the editpreference dialog (as shown here http://twitpic.com/18ttdp) by pressing the 'Done' button on the keyboard. Currently, pressing 'Done' just dismisses the keyboard but leaves the dialog. In other parts of my application I use code similar to the following to intercept the 'Done' key press and execute actions in my activity: text.setOnEditorActionListener(new TextView.OnEditorActionListener() { @Override public boolean onEditorAction(TextView v, int actionId, KeyEvent event) { if (actionId == EditorInfo.IME_ACTION_DONE) { //do stuff here return true; } return false; } }); However, I am unsure of how to do achieve this same effect in my preference activity or layout xml.

So I did this test: Compare grails prod run-app with grails prod run-war. The first works fine, and does conect with the mysql database. The other don't. • Web-design / UI advice

  I'm working on a website on a Fmylife style. Now the homepage is the page showing the list of the latest posts. But I think there is a problem with that: The most "interesting" page is the one showing the top posts of the last days, but that page has very few visits compared to the main page. I suppose that's only because the main page is the "default" one. So, I've been thinking of making a home page that shows no posts (only one at the top of the page) but 4 big buttons showing the visitors what are the options to browse the content. But I'm also afraid that most users will not click any option and leave the site having seen no posts. So I don't know what to do. Obviously I have no idea of what will be good from a usability/efficiency point of view. Maybe a mix of the two options will be the best, but I don't know how to mix them. Any advice or idea will be greatly appreciated. Is it possible to perform this comparison and generate the migration script from the command line? If so, what are the command line tools, and are the same tools used in equivalent versions of Visual Studio 2010?

• Webservice returns java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

  Hi, I am receiving the above message when making a request to a java webservice. We originally created a Java Console application and manually submitted an xml file. When running this as a Java Application the response is successfully created and displayed by using System.out.println. We are creating the web service by selecting the java file that contains the methods and choosing "create webservice" specifying the dynamic project that the webservice is to be created in and the methods to be exposed. What the application is doing is taking an xml file and unmarshalling this to an object using: public static Object unmarshalToObject(Class classToBeBound, String xmlRequest) { Object obj = new Object(); try { JAXBContext jc = JAXBContext.newInstance(classToBeBound); Unmarshaller um = jc.createUnmarshaller(); obj = um.unmarshal(new StringReader(xmlRequest)); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace() } return obj; } Some processing is carried out on the file and then an object is marshalled to xml as follows: public static String marshalToXML(Object data) { StringWriter sw = new StringWriter(); try { logger.info("Create new Marshall"); JAXBContext jc = JAXBContext.newInstance("ContextPathName"); logger.info("Marshalled to xmlObjects"); Marshaller marshaller = jc.createMarshaller(); marshaller.setProperty(Marshaller.JAXB_FORMATTED_OUTPUT, true); marshaller.setProperty(Marshaller.JAXB_FRAGMENT, true); marshaller.marshal(data, sw); } catch (Exception e) { logException(logger, e); } return sw.toString(); } The following is the line of code that seems to be causing an issue as the logger displays the message prior to this: JAXBContext jc = JAXBContext.newInstance("ContextPathName"); The webservice never gets to the next line - the following is the body of the SOAP message: <soapenv:Fault> <faultcode>soapenv:Server.userException</faultcode> <faultstring>java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException</faultstring> <detail> <ns1:hostname xmlns:ns1="http://xml.apache.org/axis/">servername</ns1:hostname> </detail> </soapenv:Fault> I have added Try/Catch around this section of code even as far as looking for JAXBExceptions but this does not seem to catch anything - nor does the general exception. This issue does not occur when running the console application. The build path for this includes the following contents of sun\jwsdp-2.0\jaxb\lib: jaxb-api.jar jsr173_1.0_api.jar jaxb-impl.jar I have added these to the lib folder in the WEB-INF file of the dynamic project. I am running the webservice in JBuilder 2008 R2 and using SOAPUI to submit the request - this points to the wsdl generated when creating the webservice. If anyone has any help or ideas on how to solve this could they please reply - thanks for taking the time to read this post!

  I was looking for list of actions and their sequence when running a WiX setup. Somehow the official website doesn't seem to provide any information. The basic problem is that I want to schedule my custom actions correctly. Typically I need to register a DLL with regsvr32.exe, and this can only be done once the files are copied to the harddrive. However the custom action <Custom Action="RegisterShellExt" After="InstallFiles"> failed with the error message "file not found". What I've done then is analizing the log of my MSI with WiX Edit, and I've found that the Action InstallFiles exists more than once. And effectively the files are written only the second time it appears. • Pros/Cons of document based database vs relational database

  I've been trying to see if I can accomplish some requirements with a document based database, in this case CouchDB. Two generic requirements: CRUD of entities with some fields which have unique index on it ecommerce web app like eBay (better description here). And I'm begining to think that a Document-based database isn't the best choice to address these requirements. Furthermore, I can´t imagine a use for a Document based database (maybe my imagination is too little). Can you explain me if I am asking pears to an elm when I try to use a Document based database for this requirements?

The thing is I contacted db4o support asking if db4o would be suitable for a website, and they answered me that only for websites with low concurrency. That means with few requests? I am sure that I'm entering information (username,password) that is correct and exists in the database.
