I finished my #TechEd 2010, may I have another??

It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America. I always love my time here. First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather). I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event. It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome. The night life is hoppin’. In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together. I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton. I've tried to load it on XNA and traslate the camera for 15 units, but I can seem to find the values needed to see the box properly. Google Drive stripped Outlook 2010 of all emails, contacts, etc

I have a business that requires I use the business email: [email protected] I loaded Google Drive as a free cloud to share project details with co-worker. Side effect is that Outlook 2010 does not work now. All incoming emails are now transferred to my personal Google account. Now I can not send business emails inclusive of business headers and footers since Outlook is erroring on send/receive. And all my history of email organization on Outlook is gone. I was previously successfully syncing outlook through Google calendar to keep my blackberry sync'd Your help is appreciated - thank you. David

Free Dynamic DNS Nameservers

I recently set up a home server that I want to use as my primary hosting platform. So far, I've mapped some domains to it by setting up A records for them that point to my home IP. As my home IP can change randomly and without notice, however, I'm afraid of such downtime. Thus, I'm looking for a dynamic DNS solution. So far, I've set up DynDNS, but I haven't found a way to use dynamic DNS with an existing domain. Are there any free dynamic DNS nameserver services available?

Mounting a TrueCrypt volume over FTP

Is it possible to mount a TrueCrypt volume file over FTP? Here's how TrueCrypt works with a local file: User inputs path to volume file, enters password TrueCrypt verifies that the password is correct (probably by decrypting the very first part of the volume file?) TrueCrypt reads the directory listing from the volume file and mounts the volume. However, in this step, TrueCrypt does NOT process the whole volume file. The user browses the directory listing and opens a file. TrueCrypt reads only the part of the volume file that contains the file the user wants, and then decrypts it. Once again, TrueCrypt doesn't process the whole volume file - it only reads part of it. The user edits part of the file and saves it. TrueCrypt encrypts the change and edits the volume file. I'm pretty sure it should be possible to mount a volume over FTP, without undermining security and without having to transfer the whole volume file just to read one small part of the volume. Here's how I imagine it: User inputs FTP path to volume file, enters FTP login information, enters password to volume TrueCrypt downloads the very first part of the volume file and verifies that the password is correct TrueCrypt downloads the part of the volume file that contains the directory listing - the data is sent encrypted over FTP and is decrypted locally. The user browses the directory listing and opens a file. TrueCrypt downloads only the part of the volume file that contains the file the user wants, and then decrypts it locally. The user edits part of the file and saves it. TrueCrypt encrypts the change and edits the volume file over FTP, transferring encrypted data only. Is such a feature available?

Unable to copy files previously extracted from archives created on a Mac, even after claiming ownership

I reinstalled Windows on my computer today, and backed up my music to a USB drive. Now, I'm trying to copy the files onto my fresh Windows partition, but I'm unable to copy files that I obtained within my previous Windows installation from zip archives created on Macs. When I try to copy those previously-extracted files, I get an error saying that I need permission from S-1-5-21-...-1000 (a bizarre long ID). The first thing I tried was to take ownership of the files by setting my new user account as the owner, but that resulted in errors saying that I need permission from myself! Some Googling suggested adding antivirus suggestions, so I excluded the relevant folders from Microsoft Security Essentials, but the issue persists. For what it's worth, it seems that some program (so far I've only installed Chrome, Microsoft Security Essentials, and the latest Windows updates) created an empty folder named 601c8c7f0e0c03f725 at the root of my external USB hard drive. What gives?

IIS 7 URL Rewrite to GeoServer running on Apache

I'm building a mapping application based on OpenLayers that uses GeoServer to serve up mapping data. The problem I'm having is that besides the map images I'm requesting through WMS, I'm using jQuery AJAX to get information from GeoServer. As GeoServer is running on a different port, my requests are being blocked due to cross-site scripting security policies in JavaScript. As a Java application, GeoServer runs on Apache on port 8080, while my IIS instance is running on port 80. Instead of building a proxy, I've decided to use URL Rewriting in IIS7 to fix this problem. I'm following this guide, but it's still not working. Here are my URL Rewrite rule settings: Matches URL: (.*) Condition: {HTTP_URL} matching /geoserver Action: rewrite to http://localhost:8080/{R:1}, appending query string When I request http://localhost/geoserver/wms?QUERY_LAYERS=SanDiego:FWSA_sandiego&LAYERS=SanDiego:FWSA_sandiego&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&FEATURE_COUNT=20&REQUEST=GetFeatureInfo&EXCEPTIONS=application/vnd.ogc.se_xml&BBOX=-13009123.590156,3862057.2905992,-13006066.109025,3865114.7717302&INFO_FORMAT=text/html&x=20&y=20&width=40&height=40&srs=EPSG:900913, however, all I get is a 404, although the same request on port 8080 returns the proper result. How do I determine whether this email bounce is my fault?

I use Google Apps to handle email for my personal website, so I have an email address [email protected] through that, and I also have a Gmail account [email protected]. Now, I've been trying to send emails to a particular recipient who shall be known as [email protected]. When I send the email from my Gmail account with the @gmail.com address, it works fine. However, when I send it from my Google Apps account with the @ellipsix.net address, I get a bounce message which includes the following text: Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently: [email protected] Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 554 554 mail server permanently rejected message (#5.3.0) (state 17). The bounce message suggests that it is up to the mail administrator of the recipient domain example.com to fix the problem, whatever it is. But I would like to be as sure as possible that nothing needs to be fixed on my end. I already have DKIM signatures enabled for my domain, and I have published an SPF DNS record. Is there something else I should check or do, or can I be confident that it's up to the recipient to fix this issue? Does the "state 17" in the bounce message mean something relevant? I've included my domain name in the question so people who know more than me about this stuff can independently check the relevant DNS records or other information. This other question seems similar, but I've already investigated everything suggested in the answers there (except for contacting Google, which I don't want to do unless I suspect it's their issue to fix).

Is the APC BR700G UPS (or similar) compatible with Active PFC power supplies?

I'm looking at getting a UPS for my home computer. So far the APC BR700G looks very promising, except for one thing: one of the reviews on Newegg says that this UPS does not work with a power supply with Active PFC. Pros: Unit looks great, built well, very heavy, was excited to use it. Cons: Didn't research enough - many newer power supplies like my corsair 750w (and yes dells and other mainstreamers sell them too) that I bought last year have a feature called active pfc (power factor corrected). The signal for this backup battery doesn't fully support that feature and can cause issues. You can find an article on APCs site if you search their user forums for PFC. And the power supply in my computer is, in fact, an Active PFC PSU. I've already found one answer on this site claiming that it's not an issue, that "most quality supplies these days have PFC and work just fine with a UPS." That disagrees with the review on Newegg. Can someone explain this discrepancy? Also, what is it exactly about a UPS that makes it incompatible with an Active PFC PSU? (if anything) Is there some way to tell based on the technical specifications, or do I just have to hunt for reviews online to avoid wasting my money? While any input would be appreciated, I would prefer to get an answer from someone with actual experience with similar UPS's and Active PFC power supplies, who can tell me whether it works or not.

Grayed-Out Sleep and Hibernate Options on Windows 7 After Updating Graphics Driver

I have a Gateway M275 Tablet PC, on which I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate. The laptop is quite old, so there aren't any Win7 drivers for it, not to mention any Vista drivers. Win7 has been working for some time, but I noticed that my video output wasn't working. I went into Device Manager and found that I didn't have a driver for my video card: it just recognized it as the standard one. I searched online and found an XP driver for it, released by Gateway. Device Manager accepted this driver and prompted me to reboot. After that, I noticed that my Sleep and Hibernate options in the Shut Down menu have been grayed-out. I looked online and found that many people are attributing this to display drivers, as such an old driver would surely not be compatible with the standby procedures Windows 7 uses. To make it clear: I was able to Sleep and Hibernate before updating the drivers; now, I can't. Running powercfg /a gives me, "An internal system component has disabled this standby state," for each available standby mode. Is there some way that the driver can be modified to support hibernation? The new driver fixed my video output problem, but I guess hibernation is more important for me. If not, what steps should I take to remove the driver and just leave the standard Windows one, which previously supported hibernation and sleep on this computer? Thanks in advance.

GKTank example is not working.

Hello, I'm trying to get the GKTank example working with 2 iPhones. Both have bluetooth enabled. I start the app on both devices and tap the screen. The Peer Picker comes up and the devices find each other. If I select one device in the list it says "Waiting for {other iPhone}..." forever. On the {other iPhone} the waiting phone gets grayed out. If I select the device to connect to from both devices at the same time both go into waiting state forever... A way for an Upstart event to be sent whenever ecryptfs homedir mounted/unmounted?

I have an encrypted homedir (ecryptfs) and I'm wanting to run a private mysql daemon with the database files in my homedir. The daemon should be started whenever the homedir is mounted, and stopped before the homedir is unmounted. It seems I have to write an Upstart script, which doesn't seem too hard; the problem is triggering it. Is there already any Upstart event that is sent on these occasions? Or must I insert an "initctl emit" somewhere? Where? It seems the encrypted homedir is mounted whenever I either open my GUI session or ssh to my account. Is there a common place in these two processes where I might insert code? (I don't want to patch and compile any C code, just insert maybe a few lines somewere.) David

Good news and Windows Cake!

A lot of interesting things happed in my life recently. I won the “Windows @ Work Contest” from IT Toolbox and as I was not eligible to get the prize I arranged a 500 US$ donation to Kidsave.org. April 1st was also a very special day in my life, not only it was April Fools days, but it was also when I first received my Microsoft MVP Award for Windows Desktop Experience. I had enough time to celebrate, but my boss went on vacations the day before. Today he came back to the office with a very nice surprise. Yes! Google Webmaster Tools shows problems with duplicate title tags under Optimization - HTML Improvements, for example: ???????? Mitsubishi Electric Mr. Slim PC Series PC-3KAKLT (220V) 30000 BTU > /????-????/mitsubishi-mr-slim-pc3kaklt-30000-btu.html > /????-????/mitsubishi-mr-slim-pc3kaklt-30000-btu.html?category_id=96 These two pages have exactly the same content, a rel-canonical tag is set, and they are (no longer) linked to internally. Additionally, we used the Configuration - URL Parameters setting, to set this parameter to No: Doesn't affect page content about one month ago. However, Google is still showing these HTML improvements (and rankings dropped dramatically). What else can we do here? Best, David

U1 music mp3 files not put into albums

Via the web page I can see that my files sync to U1 cloud servers. For the mp3 files, there seems to be a problem that several questions have already addressed but there does not seem to be a clear answer. If I use EasyTAG 2.1.6, I can see the ID3 tags on the local files and they seem to correctly define the artist, album title and track name. I expect it is not relevant, but I am using 10.04 with several different clients to rip the CDs. However, some mp3 files do not appear in the cloud at all and some others get assigned to Various Artist or Unknown artist. Does the music streaming (e.g. via Ipad) use the tags or the directory/file structure to assign the artist or album, and how quickly should it be expected to work? :-) Which version of ID3 tags does U1 music streaming work best with or prefer? thanks for any help David

Copy machine security issues.

I am involved on a project to talk to communities about the risks of posting online content is social networks. But this time I was really impressed how far security concerns can go. This video from CBS news talks about security risks related to corporate fax/printers and scanners. It was very clear that when they got the machines they selected the machines by previous owner and they were not random machines, but still, I will never scan from my company machine again. Post Deploy MAAS cleanup

I have a mostly working MAAS cluster. I'm still learning juju, but while I'm doing that, I wanted to take this opportunity to do some clean-up tasks. Here are my goals: Configure ntp on the nodes. Set the video mode on the nodes. Set the timezone on the nodes. Are these juju tasks? Or is this better attacked by mounting the disk image on the MAAS host, and doing the configuration there? If I do it that way, how do I get the nodes to recognize that they have to re-install the image to pickup my changes? Thank you. David
