  • Why does the BigFraction class in the Apache-Commons-Math library return incorrect division results?

    In the spirit of using existing, tested and stable libraries of code, I started using the Apache-Commons-Math library and its BigFraction class to perform some rational calculations for an Android app I'm writing called RationalCalc. It works great for every task that I have thrown at it, except for one nagging problem. When dividing certain BigFraction values, I am getting incorrect results. If I create a BigFraction with the inverse of the divisor and multiply instead, I get the same incorrect answer but perhaps that is what the library is doing internally anyway. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?   • SQL SERVER – Preserve Leading Zero While Coping to Excel from SSMS

    Earlier I wrote two articles about how to efficiently copy data from SSMS to Excel. Since I wrote that post there are plenty of interest generated on this subject. There are a few questions I keep on getting over this subject. One of the question is how to get the leading zero preserved while copying the data from SSMS to Excel. Well it is almost the same way as my earlier post SQL SERVER – Excel Losing Decimal Values When Value Pasted from SSMS ResultSet. The key here is in EXCEL and not in SQL Server. The step here is to change the format of Excel Cell to Text from Numbers and that will preserve the value of the with leading or trailing Zeros in Excel. However, I assume this is done for display purpose only because once you convert column to Text you may find it difficult to do numeric operations over the column for example Aggregation, Average etc. If you need to do the same you should either convert the columns back to Numeric in Excel or do the process in Database and export the same value as along with it as well. However, I have seen in requirement in the real world where the user has to have a numeric value with leading Zero values in it for display purpose. Here is my suggestion, instead of manipulating numeric value in the database and converting it to character value the ideal thing to do is to store it as a numeric value only in the database. Whatever changes you want to do for display purpose should be handled at the time of the display using the format function of SQL or Application Language. Honestly, database is data layer and presentation is presentation layer – they are two different things and if possible they should not be mixed. If due to any reason you cannot follow above advise and you need is to have append leading zeros in the database only here are two of my previous articles I suggest you to refer them. I am open to learn new tricks as these articles are almost three years old. Please share your opinion and suggestions in the comments area.   • Google Analytics show zero for "Search Engine Optimizations" graph

    In Google Analytics new design, there is an area related to the queries and impressions related to your site. You can get there by following Traffic Sources = Search Engine Optimization = Queries. However, it now shows zero for the "Site Usage" graph, at the top section, while other areas of Google Analytics definitely show that site has visitors and has been used. No matter how much I search, I can't find the source of the problem. Does anyone know where the problem might be?

    In my previous post I wrote about why you should pay attention when using enum value Zero. After reading that post you are probably thinking like Benjamin Roux: Why don’t you start the enum values at 0x1? Well I could, but doing that I lose the ability to have Sync and Async mutually exclusive by design. Take a look at the following enum types: [Flags] public enum OperationMode1 { Async = 0x1, Sync = 0x2, Parent = 0x4 } [Flags] public enum OperationMode2 { Async = 0x0, Sync = 0x1, Parent = 0x2 } To achieve mutually exclusion between Sync and Async values using OperationMode1 you would have to operate both values: protected void CheckMainOperarionMode(OperationMode1 mode) { switch (mode) { case (OperationMode1.Async | OperationMode1.Sync | OperationMode1.Parent): case (OperationMode1.Async | OperationMode1.Sync): throw new InvalidOperationException("Cannot be Sync and Async simultaneous"); break; case (OperationMode1.Async | OperationMode1.Parent): case (OperationMode1.Async): break; case (OperationMode1.Sync | OperationMode1.Parent): case (OperationMode1.Sync): break; default: throw new InvalidOperationException("No default mode specified"); } } but this is a by design constraint in OperationMode2.   • Exim PanicLog has Non-Zero Size...?

    I'm getting the following error from my Ubuntu server: exim paniclog /var/log/exim4/paniclog on (my server FQDN) has non-zero size, mail system might be broken. I found a solution on the web here. Basically, I just need erase the paniclog by entering the following code: sudo rm /var/log/exim4/paniclog So, I know how to get rid of the error, but I don't know how it started, and how to not let it happen again. Any explanation? Thanks in advance.

  • My First Iteration Zero

    I recently watched a web cast that covered the idea of planning from the concept stage to the product backlog.  It was the first content I had seen related to Iteration Zero and it made a lot of sense from a planning and engagement perspective where the customer is concerned.  It illuminated some of the problems I’ve experienced with getting a large project of the ground.  The idea behind this is to just figure out get everyone to understand what needs to be constructed and to build the initial feature set from a *very* high level.  Once that happens other parts of the high level construction start to take place.  You end up with a feature list that describes what the business wants the system to do, and what it potentially may (or may not) interact with.  Low tech tools are used to create UI mockups that can be used as a starting point for some of the key UI pieces. Toward the end of the webcast they speaker introduced something that was new to me.  He referred to it as an executable skeleton or the steel thread.  The idea with this part of the webcast was to describe walking through the different mocked layers of the application.  Not all layers and collaborators are involved at this stage since it’s Iteration Zero, and each layer is either hard-coded or completely mocked to provide a 35K foot view of how the different layers layers work together.  So imagine two actors on each side of a layer diagram and the flow goes down from the upper left side down through a a consumer, thorough a service layer and then back up the service layer to the destination/actor. I would imagine much could be discussed moving through new/planned or existing/legacy layers, or a little of both to see what’s implied by the current high-level design. One part of the web cast has the business and design team creating the product box (think of your favorite cereal or toy box) with all of the features and even pictures laid out on the outside of the box.  The notion here is that if you handed this box to someone and told them your system was inside they would have an understanding of what the system would be able to do, or the features it could provide.    One of the interesting parts of the webcast was where the speaker described that he worked with a couple of groups in the same room and each group came up with a different product box – the point is that each group had a different idea of what the system was supposed to do.  At this point of the project I thought that to be valuable considering my experience has been that historically this has taken longer than a week to realize that the business unit and design teams see the high level solution differently.  Once my box is finished I plan on moving to the next stage of solution definition which is to plan the UI for this small application using Excel, to map out the UI elements.  I’m my own customer so it feels like cheating, but taking these slow deliberate steps have already provided a few learning opportunities.    So I resist the urge to load all of my user stories into my newly installed VS2010  TFS project and try to reduce or add to, the number of user stories and/or refine the high level estimates I’ve come up with so far.

    Is it acceptable to return a non-zero exit code if the program in question ran properly? For example, say I have a simple program that (only) does the following: Program takes N arguments. It returns an exit code of min(N, 255). Note that any N is valid for the program. A more realistic program might return different codes for successfully ran programs that signify different things. Should these programs instead write this information to a stream instead, such as to stdout?

  • Mounting NFS directory causes creating Zero byte files

    I have two Servers, Server X (IP 192.168.1.1) and Server Y (IP 192.168.1.2), both of them are ubuntu 9.1 i have created varnish load balancer on them for my drupal website (pressflow 6.22) I have mounted a directory of imagecache from server X to Y as below @X:/etc/exports == /var/www/proj/htdocs/sites/default/files/images 192.168.1.2(rw,async,no_subtree_check) @Y:/etc/fstab == 192.168.1.1:/var/www/proj/htdocs/sites/default/files/images var/www/proj/htdocs/sites/default/files/images nfs defaults 0 0 also i made this on server X X:/var/www/proj/htdocs/sites/default/files$ chmod -R 777 images i tried to touch, rm, vim, and cat files in images directory that has been mounted on Y and everything went fine. now, ALWAYS when server Y's imagecache tries to create an image in images directory, the image is created with ZERO byte file size. anyone face the same before? any idea of how to fix this problem or what might cause it?   • Free serif font with clearly distinguishable 0 (zero) character

    I'm using gLabels to create some small pieces of paper to give away to people - Just two lines of about 15-20 characters each. One of the important parts of the design is that there are no "o" ("oh") characters, but there are "0" ("zero") characters in an all-lowercase URL. Therefore I need a non-monospaced (and very legible in print) font where "0" cannot be confused with "o" even without reference. The closest thing I've found so far is Andale Mono and Inconsolata , but they are both monospace, and as such not very easy to read in print. Alternatively, to find a font myself, is there some way to preview all fonts in the Ubuntu repositories without installing them?

  • How to force c# binary int division to return a double?

    How to force double x = 3 / 2; to return 1.5 in x without the D suffix or casting? Is there any kind of operator overload that can be done? Or some compiler option? Amazingly, it's not so simple to add the casting or suffix for the following reason: Business users need to write and debug their own formulas. Presently C# is getting used like a DSL (domain specific language) in that these users aren't computer science engineers. So all they know is how to edit and create a few types of classes to hold their "business rules" which are generally just math formulas. But they always assume that double x = 3 / 2; will return x = 1.5 however in C# that returns 1. A. they always forget this, waste time debugging, call me for support and we fix it. B. they think it's very ugly and hurts the readability of their business rules. As you know, DSL's need to be more like natural language. Yes. We are planning to move to Boo and build a DSL based on it but that's down the road. Is there a simple solution to make double x = 3 / 2; return 1.5 by something external to the class so it's invisible to the users? Thanks! Wayne
